Content Warning: This episode contains in-depth conversations about eating disorders, internal shame regarding body size, and body imageToday I'm having an open and honest conversation with Anne Poirier about body image and our relationships with food. Anne is a nationally recognized Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, author of “The Body Joyful”, a Certified Self-Talk Trainer, eating disorder specialist, and life coach. She is the leader of the body joyful movement and does a lot of body image and body neutrality work. She shares her own lived experiences with disordered eating with me in this discussion and we talk a lot about diet culture. We get vulnerable in this episode and we also address why we don't talk about this subject enough. This is a necessary conversation, even if it's difficult, and I'm so glad Anne is having it with me.Anne shares her history with anorexia nervosa and binge eating and how the body messages in her head followed her through hospitalization and into a career in the fitness realm. The pressure from society to look a certain way, to embrace what I call “the thin ideal”, has always been powerful but especially in today's world of 24/7 social media bombardment about how to look and eat. Anne and I talk about learning to question what we choose to believe about bodies, food, and eating. We need to identify the loathing self-talk in our heads and listen to our own bodies instead of those outside voices. Our conversation really dives into how we see ourselves, how that's tied to how we see food, how we eat or don't eat, and the shame we've carried around for so long. It's a deeply personal and important episode and I can't wait for you all to hear what Anne has to say.__About Anne Poirier:Anne Poirier CSCS, is a nationally recognized Body Image Expert, author of The Body Joyful, and Not a Fat Annie and leader of the Body Joyful Revolution. As a pioneer and leading voice for the body neutrality movement, she has been featured and cited in major media outlets around the world including Shape, Women's Health, New York Times, Washington Post, Livestrong, Huff Post, ABC, Fox, CBS and NPR. As a long-time eating disorder survivor, non-diet coach and certified self-talk trainer Anne serves on the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) Lived Experience Task Force. In a 35+ year fitness and coaching career and now as a certified Intuitive Eating Councilor, Eating Disorder Specialist and Life Coach, Anne helps women free themselves from diet culture and society's thin ideal using her Body Joyful Solution. Set point theory is a VERY popular discussed conversation in the anti-diet space, and one of the most common topics discussed with clients in our virtual practice. When working with clients, we can get into the nuance behind why we get focused on “finding” our set point, but that can be harder to do for you, my wonderful podcast community! So I asked body image expert, Bri Campos, to come on the show today to discuss some of that nuance to set point theory and why we often fixate on it in hopes it may mean we will lose weight as an intuitive eater. We also talk to fellow coaches and providers in this episode, giving you lots to think about if you work in the body image space. Listen to today's episode to learn more! Brianna (or Bri) Campos is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of NJ. She works as a body image coach & is passionate about teaching women about Health at Every Size (HAES) and taking an all foods fit approach to finding freedom with food and learning to make peace with your current body. In this episode we discussed: What's changed in Bri's life since she was last on the show back in 2019! Misconceptions that providers have about their ability to coach on body image with their clients, and how to better coach your clients. The pro's and con's to the education around set point theory and how this conversation can at times be misguided? Other popular themes with body image that providers share that may miss the mark when it comes to coaching on body image. How Bri is currently living wellness without obsession. It goes without saying that we want to give our young children the best start. We also know from years of research that negative body image can impact almost all life outcomes – including relationships, education, and careers. So how do we protect our children from developing a negative body image? And when should we start? The answer could shock you. Dr Stephanie Damiano is a psychology researcher and an expert in this space. “We see quite consistently that around the age of three, children start to develop pretty strong weight attitudes and weight stereotypes around bodies,” she says. "They tend to attribute positive characteristics to thin bodies and negative characteristics to large bodies. Their body image starts to develop a little bit later, around the age of four.” Biological, psychological, and socio-cultural factors contribute to the development of positive or negative body image. In the socio-cultural space, our kids' attitudes are shaped by family, the media, and their peers – and this is where adults can influence them. Dr Damiano also leads Butterfly's pioneering Body Bright program that is available free to primary schools. Listen to her chat with Sam about helping young kids establish a positive relationship with their bodies for their future well-being and success. find out more about Butterfly body bright butterfly body bright - information for families butterfly body bright - information for schools for educators - register your schoolSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr Scott Griffiths is one of Australia's top researchers in body image and eating disorders and a National Health and Medical Research Council Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He's currently involved in an ongoing study into the male experience of eating disorders. In this In Depth episode, he challenges the myth that men are not impacted by either body image issues or eating disorders. While people usually think that only young, privileged, white women experience eating disorders, the truth is that 30% identify as male. Dr Griffiths thinks this percentage may be much higher because men are reluctant to speak up or seek help. Still, there are intense social pressures on men to look a certain way, and this puts them at risk.“If we assume that the eating disorders we see and know about are all that are out there, then men are a minority of diagnoses”, he says. “But it wouldn't surprise me if there are many more men affected. We just don't see them because we don't know how to find them.”Find out how Dr Griffiths managed to reach men for his research work, and what Butterfly is also doing to provide education, information, and much-needed support.Find out more about Dr Scott Griffiths. To find more resources for men check out Butterfly's males, eating disorders and body image page or RESET, a conversation about boys' body image.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

More than ever, we are all needing help and guidance to deal with the current circumstances we’re in right now. I had the pleasure of having @drmorganfrancis, Body Image Expert and Therapist, back on the Move Forward Podcast this week. She gives us some much-needed motivation and advice on tackling the trauma of loss and grief we are collectively going through right now as a society through this pandemic. We also dive into body shaming and treating yourself with more kindness and grace as we learn to navigate our “new norm.” On this episode we dive into: What we’re experiencing right now is in fact trauma and loss. All of our usual methods for coping with stress have been taken away from us so she shares several things we can do as we shift into a new way to exist. Things to help you manage your feelings during this time: NAME IT - meaning, name what you are currently experiencing; admit to yourself that you are in fact going through extreme trauma right now and that you are also experiencing loss. The three (3) U’s of Grief and Loss: UNIVERSAL: We’re all experiencing it. UNIQUE: In our own unique ways. UNCERTAINTY: But we are still so uncertain about what the future holds. What comparative suffering is and why we need to stop doing it! (Hint: Just because your situation may look “less grim” than another, it doesn’t mean that your suffering isn’t worthy of being seen or heard.) Setting out clear, attainable routines for the morning and evening to keep on top of nurturing your mental health - and examples of how you can do this. Understanding that it’s okay to take time to yourself to just “be,” and not, “do” - but finding a healthy balance for this because escaping reality isn’t healthy for us to do all the time. How to inspire and motivate the people around you to get them out of a negative funk. Modelling a positive relationship with your own body to ensure your child feels comfortable in their skin too. Being kinder to ourselves if our bodies have changed since being in quarantine and instead, seeing how these are the bodies that are getting us through and helping us survive. Exploring self-hate to get self-love. The take home: There are so many different experiences and moods and feelings that each person is going through right now as their response to this trauma, so be a little bit more kind (to yourself and others). Continue to remind yourself that there is infinite opportunity that lies within struggle; which means there is a chance for new beginnings through all of this! Wherever your energy feels the best, spend your time in that place. Don’t get sucked into spending time or worry where it’s not serving you!
