POPULARITY
Before this year, Ivy last released new music in 2011 with the album All Hours. Now, 14 years later, Ivy has reassembled to share Traces of You, which came out September 5 on Bar/None Records. What makes this album extra special is that it includes parts from one of the late members, Adam Schlessinger, who died from complications of COVID-19 in 2020. The other surviving members — Andy Chase, Dominique Durand, and Bruce Driscoll — wrote 10 brand-new songs that all incorporate parts from Schlesinger. KEXP’s Roddy Nikpour spoke with Ivy about their collaborative approach, how Chase and Durand’s marriage may or may not be affected by a love of Tetris and a self-described “flute fetish,” and ultimately how the band had fun putting this record together. “We couldn’t just leave [the demos] in a storage room,” Durand says in the interview. “We had to do something about it.” When it comes to writing around parts from their late bandmate, Chase adds, “You try every idea. That’s the wonderful thing about the digital era — there’s no limit. We pretty much exhaust all our creativity on every song, and then it’s a matter of subtraction.” This is why the band adopted a “less is more” approach. “There were songs where we would try to add a bunch of stuff and then realize we’d gone too far,” Driscoll says. “We’d realize that the first thing we’d done was the best thing.” Related: Janice Headley talked with the band in 2023 about one of their iconic reissued albums, Apartment Life, which originally came out in 1997. David Sidoni sits down with How-to-Buy-a-Homie Corey from Dallas, Texas, to talk about his experience transitioning from an apartment to buying his very first home! Check out their conversation as they discuss the differences between condos and apartments, reverse-budgeting, house flippers, and so much more. Here are some takeaways from today's conversation: Episode Highlights: [0:30] Planning and Saving Before buying a house, Corey knew he needed to tackle some student debt. So, he used the reverse-budget approach to save enough money for a down payment while knocking out student loan payments. The reverse-budget prioritizes long-term savings over a traditional budget's focus on month-to-month expenses, allowing you to save more money quickly. Reverse-budgeting allowed him to knock out debt quickly and get into a good position to buy a home. It worked so well for him, in fact, that he was approved for a loan within 72 hours! [12:16] Picking the Right Place After his record loan approval, Corey was ready to start looking at homes. He and his unicorn team picked out some neighborhoods that would suit his preferences and then started visiting. After viewing about 15-20 places, Corey settled on a condo in one of his favorite neighborhoods. While he did compromise on some things, such as his own yard, he was able to enjoy so many other amenities that he wasn't able to enjoy at his old apartment. [16:43] Your Relative Happily Ever After While looking for homes, Corey didn't have to face too much competition. But he found that investors are very likely to purchase homes in middle class neighborhoods and give them a quick “flip” for profit, often marking up the homes for way more than they're worth. But, having the right unicorn team can help you sniff those homes out by looking “under the hood,” if you will. Veteran realtors know where to look to make sure you're getting a good deal and warn you about the duds before it's too late.

There was never a question that Ivy would make it, though they did so with many strokes of luck, good fortune, and heart ache along the way. With talented songwriters Andy Chase and Adam Schlesinger writing sophisticated pop songs showcasing their love of ‘80s and ‘90s UK music, the only thing missing was a voice to go with the sounds. Chase's girlfriend at the time (now wife), Dominique Durand, had moved to New York City from Paris to study fashion. While growing up in a house full of music journalists in France, Durand enjoyed the lifestyle and the personalities but never entertained the thought of taking center stage until she was reluctantly talked into it by Chase and Schlesinger. And the industry took notice. In the bumpy times of the mid-90s where labels were signing every band with a pulse, and subsequently dropping the ones that didn't meet sales targets, Ivy was the type of band to earn glowing reviews that didn't always translate to units shifted. 1995's debut Realistic was released by Seed Records. 1997's critically-acclaimed Apartment Life was originally put out by Atlantic Records and reissued the following year by 550 Music after Atlantic unceremoniously dropped the band while they were in the middle of a tour. Since that time, Ivy has released music on Nettwerk, Minty Fresh and, now, Bar-None, who is releasing Apartment Life on vinyl for the first time. For Chase and Durand, it's been a bittersweet few years as the rights to Apartment Life came back to the band shortly after Schlesinger passed away from Covid complications in 2020. In this episode, Jeff, Alan, and David discuss: How God's providence has shown up in his life and career. Modeling generous giving and encouraging your family. Deciding how to give. Being intentional in your busy life. Key Takeaways: Find somebody that you can mentor under, regardless of what you do. Learn from them, learn what work is about, learn how to do things with excellence and integrity. You can minister wherever you are at, whatever your business, and whatever your circumstances. Lift where you stand. God gives us a lot of experiences. He will put things in our path that are for us to support tht matter to us. Step out in faith. If it is for a good cause, step out, even if you are uncomfortable, because that is where the impact will be found.
