In our final episode of this season's "Session Voices" series, we talk (again) with Mary Collins, of UM's Center for Children, Families and Workforce Development. Mary talks about the many steps left to codify and implement new policies, now that the session has ended, and the ways in which communities can work together to implement these changes. We discuss the power of local coalitions, particularly Early Childhood Coalitions (ECC's) -- what they are, why they exist, and how you can get involved in one in your own community (or help create one). Guest Bio: Mary Collins has worked in a variety of social service settings where she provided counseling, advocacy, and supportive services to children, adolescents, and adults. She worked for the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) in a variety of leadership positions focused on improving Montana's behavioral health system. In her role at the Center for Children, Families and Workforce Development, Mary works to support Montana's early childhood system. Her efforts are targeted at bolstering the capacity of Montana's Early Childhood Coalitions to support community-driven systems change.mary.collins@mso.umt.eduOrganizations/resources mentioned in this episode: The Montana Early Childhood Coalition: https://hmhb-mt.org/mtecc/UM's Center for Children, Families and Workforce Development: https://www.umt.edu/ccfwd/Zero to Five Montana: https://zerotofive.org/To contact your federal representatives: https://mt.gov/govt/congressional_delegation"Session Voices" was hosted and produced by Emily Freeman, with music by Caroline Keys. Many people think heart disease is a man's disease when in fact heart disease is the number one cause of death in women. The symptoms of heart disease vary greatly between men and women so they are often misunderstood or missed all together. While cardiac disease impacts some women at higher rates, education and healthy lifestyle changes can prevent cardiac incidents.

Today's story is one of the most shocking and infuriating crimes you've probably never heard. It's a story about a family fighting for their daughter, trusting their guts and never, EVER giving up, despite push back from detectives who seemed disinterested in her case. It's a case about vulnerability, trust, and how sometimes, the WORST things happen to the BEST people and it's impossible for our heads or our hearts to really wrap around that. A man who was charged in connection with the brutal murder of a Charlotte woman who was stabbed over 130 times and found stuffed in a mattress was released from jail over the weekend on bond, jail records show. James Robert Salerno was given a $250,000 bond in January in connection with the 2020 killing of Mary Collins. Mecklenburg County jail records show that Salerno was released on June 3 on bond. His charges include murder, kidnapping and DWI. According to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office inmate docket, Salerno does not have electronic monitoring. The victim's mother, Kasei Canfora, spoke to WCNC Charlotte about the gut-wrenching news she learned after attending a community violence rally with other inflected mothers who have suffered from gun violence. "It's creating a lot of conflicting feelings within me," Canfora said. "It's very painful and I have no control over the entire process which is the hardest part. This week is the three year anniversary of Mary's torture and murder. Her family is still fighting for justice. Please relisten to this special episode, near and dear to our hearts. This podcast was founded on the need to bring a voice to those who are not able to speak for themselves- Stories of the voiceless is our tagline. That's never been more true than for the vulnerable population of people with disabilities. According to disabilityjustice.org “While each situation is unique, most violent crimes occur because people with disabilities are viewed as ‘easy targets' due to an assumption that they are less capable of defending themselves physically. During rare times when circumstances shift, including the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals have an opportunity “to look into our soul and see if we like what we see there.” Life for Deseret News reporter Lois Collins was a constant invitation to see things differently. Raised by blind parents, Collins had the opportunity to learn how to “see” in every sense of the word. Of her mother, Collins once wrote, “She taught me not to worry about the things you can't change, but never to walk away from those you can.” Now, after some four decades as a journalist writing about families and family policy, she joins the Church News podcast to talk about her parents, Frank and Mary Collins, and help listeners look inside themselves — and others — and see if they like what they find there. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen. People with developmental disabilities are at particular risk because their cognitive abilities and social skills may be compromised, making them more susceptible to predators.” Tonight we invite you to join one family's quest for justice and change in the name of their loved one, brutally murdered by people pretending to care for her. Dr. Noel Collins has learned that most distress for people with dementia doesn't come from the absence of some magic bullet. It comes from the challenges associated with care. As an older adult psychiatrist, Dr Collins has vast experience in the field of dementia as a specialism within gerontology. Gerontology is the study of ageing. We think about ageing as being a purely biological process. Actually, as we age, we're influenced by many non-biological things; by social policy, by the law, by finances, and that also includes dementia. Dr Collins looks at dementia through a more sociological lens than a medical one. He is the co-author of ‘The D-Word: Rethinking Dementia', which covers the insights Dr Collins acquired from six years' running a memory clinic. Dr Collins wrote the book with Mary Collins, who appeared in episode 28 of the Podcast. You can listen to Noel's interview here on episode 042 of The Retirement Café Podcast.

This week, my longtime friend, Mary Collins, sits down with us to share her journey with God, including His restoration of her heart and life. She transparently offers her personal discovery of how deeply God cares about our thoughts because they shape our choices and actions.
Boom! Its a New Year and we are off to a fresh start with Inner Truth. Happy 2019! It's typically this time of year that we contemplate what has past and what will come for us over the next 12 months. All the life reflection, breakups, new romances, job searches, seem to come to fruition at this time. So I thought it would be fun to kick things off with someone who makes predictions for a profession. Tarot is something has fascinated me for years, in particular its connection to archetypal psychology and Carl Jung's work on the collective unconscious. Do we all contain within us archetypes and stories that play out over our lives? Joseph Campbell's famous work on the Hero's Journey (the inspiration for Star Wars) certainly indicates so. So I reached out to one of the foremost and talented Tarot card readers in the world (Elaine Mary Collins) to talk about everything to do with the system as well as make some predictions for 2019. In this episode you'll learn: What Tarot is and how it was developed; What a reading is really showing you; How Tarot connects to the mind-matter quantum model of the universe; Mind-bending synchronicities you can experience from Tarot; What are archetypes and how do we express them in daily life; What are the predictions for 2019; How to get started in Tarot and use it for inform your life Enjoy! Elaine runs retreats across on the island of Ibiza as well as seeing clients in person or via Skype. She makes regular visits to London and Los Angeles and is invited to various other destinations with her work. Katie Derham explores dance at the court of Versailles - the dance music of Louis XIV and the French baroque, and the origins of classical ballet. Picture the scene at Versailles - the Sun King Louis wielding his political power in court - and dancing. It seems strange to us today, but the two were indelibly intertwined in the 17th century. Ballets and operas were extravagant spectacles used to celebrate marriages or show off wealth and power. Louis was known as a great dancer, and in fact, he is seen as the father of classical ballet, establishing the first ballet school in a room at the Louvre palace. His key composer was Jean-Baptiste Lully, who created the first dances which told a story. In this episode Katie uncovers a hidden dimension of the music in the context of the dance steps, including an interview with the baroque dancer Mary Collins, and musicians Rachel Brown and Adrian Butterfield, who are all working on a joint project, and an insight into dance and power from George Blagden who plays Louis XIV in the BBC TV series 'Versailles'.
Mary Collins and Stefan Woehlke founded Carpe DC Food Tours as a way to communicate the history and culture of Washington, DC through food. Focusing on the dynamic neighborhoods of Shaw and U Street, the start-up gives tourists and locals a deeper understanding of the streets and people that have made Washington, DC such a creative and fascinating place, rich with arts and literature and often obscured by the federal government's prominent influence. We sit down with Mary Collins and Stefan Woehlke and delve into some of these stories and get some mouth-watering food descriptions that will make you want to sign up for a food tour in DC or wherever you call home. Mary Collins and Stefan Woehlke started Carpe DC Food Tours after years of traveling the world, learning about communities through their food and heritage. When they're not touring or traveling, Stefan is working towards his phD in Archaeology at the University of Maryland, and Mary works for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Carpe DC Food Tours tells the stories of DC's iconic neighborhoods through food and they are the district's only one-for one food tour, which means for every ticket purchased they provide food for a day to someone in need through their partnership with Bread for the City.
