Most tour operators benchmark pricing against competitors and copy the playbook of the loudest voices in the industry. Mary Collins runs two businesses by ignoring both and starting from the question an anthropologist asks first: who benefits.Mary Collins is the founder and CEO of Blue Fern Travel, a DC food tour company she launched with her husband in 2014, and the owner of Far Horizons Archaeology and Cultural Tours, the 40-year-old multi-day company she acquired in 2022. Both businesses sit on the same foundation: an anthropologist's instinct for community, story, and the economics of who benefits from a tour. Blue Fern pays full price at every restaurant, tips every server 20 percent, and routes a portion of every ticket back to a local nonprofit. Far Horizons travels with a PhD scholar from morning to night, caps at 14 guests, and spends two hours at sites where most competitors spend 30 minutes. This episode is a working session on running two very different tour businesses from the same operating philosophy. Mitch and Mary go deep on hiring for personality over knowledge, pricing into demand instead of against the competition, building DMC relationships that survive a 20-year operator transition, and the specific moment Peter Syme had to tell her twice to raise her prices. She walks through what it took to inherit a beloved 40-year-old brand from its 80-year-old founder, the FileMaker-to-WeTravel tech overhaul, and the donation model that has routed half a million dollars to archaeological sites worldwide. Operators running food tours, scholar-led tours, or any business with a returning customer base will find concrete, actionable material here.Resources:Blue Fern Travel (blueferntravel.com)Far Horizons Archaeology and Cultural Tours (farhorizons.com)Bread for the City (Blue Fern's donation partner)WeTravel (Far Horizons' booking platform)

AI is moving faster than most workplaces can rewrite their playbooks, and that raises a blunt question: if machines can handle more tasks, what should people leaders double down on? We sit down with chartered psychologist and leadership coach Dr. Mary Collins to make the case that emotional intelligence, empathy, and relationship building are not “nice to have” anymore. They are the skills that keep teams healthy, productive, and connected when the pace of change keeps spiking. We get practical about what AI can and cannot replace, including a candid take on AI therapists and why deep trust still comes from human-to-human presence. From there, we zoom in on the real cost of distraction at work: weaker listening, thinner connection, and declining empathy. Mary shares why this matters for culture, mental health, and performance, plus how leaders can rebuild attention and communication habits in everyday moments like 1:1s and hard conversations.Gen Z at work is a major focus too. We unpack the strengths younger workers bring, the data on stress tolerance and wellbeing, and what leaders often miss when managing intergenerational teams. Mary also breaks down three emotional intelligence competencies she consistently sees in leaders who thrive through uncertainty: self-awareness, cognitive empathy, and adaptability. If you care about leadership development, workplace wellbeing, and building human skills in an AI-driven workplace, this one will give you clear language and smarter next steps.Subscribe for more conversations on the future of work, share this with a leader who's navigating change, and leave a review with your take: which human skill will matter most over the next decade?Support the showFeature Your Brand on the HRchat PodcastThe HRchat show has had 100,000s of downloads and is frequently listed as one of the most popular global podcasts for HR pros, Talent execs and leaders. Gen Z are rapidly becoming the most influential generation in the workplace — and by 2035, they are expected to be the largest cohort in the workplace globally. Raised in a fully digital world and shaped by economic uncertainty, global crises and the COVID-19 pandemic, they bring distinct expectations around work, wellbeing and career development. In this episode of The HR Room Podcast, Dave and Mary are joined by Dr Mary Collins, Chartered Psychologist at the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland, alongside Insight HR's own Aoife Dolan, representing Gen Z in practice. Together, they explore the defining characteristics of this generation, combining academic research with lived workplace experience. The conversation highlights how Gen Z prioritises purpose, flexibility and wellbeing over traditional career paths. From job mobility and side hustles to their expectations of leadership and workplace culture, the discussion offers valuable insights into how organisations can better attract, engage and retain this emerging workforce. The episode also explores challenges — including rising loneliness, lower stress tolerance and the impact of social media — while emphasising the importance of intentional workplace design, multi-generational collaboration and innovative practices like reverse mentoring. Ultimately, Gen Z are not just changing the workplace — they are reshaping what work means. Guest Dr Mary Collins — Chartered Psychologist, Royal College of Surgeons Ireland Aoife Dolan - HR Advisor, Insight HR Topics include: Who Gen Z are and how they differ from previous generations Why Gen Z prioritise wellbeing, flexibility and purpose at work The rise of job mobility, portfolio careers and side hustles How attitudes to loyalty and career progression are evolving The role of loneliness, stress and social media in Gen Z's experience Generational differences in confidence, communication and expectations The concept of reverse mentoring and cross-generational learning Designing workplaces that support a multi-generational workforce Key Takeaways for HR Leaders Gen Z value purpose, flexibility and wellbeing more than traditional career stability. Loyalty is conditional — organisations must earn it through meaningful experiences. Mental health, loneliness and stress tolerance are critical considerations for this cohort. Career paths are becoming more fluid, with increased job mobility and side hustles. Intentional workplace design is essential to support engagement and development. Flexibility and autonomy are no longer perks, but expectations. Organisations that adapt to Gen Z's needs will be better positioned for the future of work. After a long break, Disrupt Dublin is returning on Thursday, 26 February 2026, bringing fast talks, sharp thinking, and real conversations about the future of work in Ireland. In this episode, I'm joined by my event co-host Bill Banham, Editor of HR Gazette, host of the HRchat Podcast, and one of the long-standing forces behind Disrupt events across the UK, Ireland, the US, and Canada. We talk about why now is the right time to relaunch DisruptHR Dublin, what makes the format different from traditional HR conferences, and what attendees can expect on the night. What Is Disrupt? Disrupt was founded in 2013 in Cincinnati and has since run events in more than 170 cities worldwide. Its format is simple and demanding: Five-minute talks Twenty slides Slides auto-advance every 15 seconds Speakers have no room to waffle. They must be clear, direct, and honest. The result is high-energy talks that get straight to the point and often say the things people are already thinking but rarely hear on stage. Bill explains how this format changes the dynamic for both speakers and audiences, creating a sense of shared risk, focus, and connection. The aim is not polished perfection, but useful ideas that spark new thinking. Why Disrupt Dublin Matters This will be the first Disrupt event in Dublin since before the pandemic, and the relaunch is designed to feel social, open, and practical. Rather than a full-day conference, Disrupt Dublin is an evening event with time built in for proper conversations. Talks are recorded and added to the global Disrupt library, which now hosts thousands of short presentations from around the world. Topics on the night will span leadership, culture, talent, technology, learning, wellbeing, and how work is really changing in 2026 and beyond. Tune in here to this Monday's edition of Breaking With Brett Jensen! Breaking Brett Jensen kicks the show off by talking about the packed House Judiciary Committee hearing at the federal courthouse and the emotional atmosphere surrounding it. He shares audio from the powerful testimony of Steve Federico, the father of Logan Federico, who was brutally murdered while visiting friends. Federico’s heartbreaking account highlights the repeated failures of the justice system, as the accused had been arrested 39 times with 25 felonies, yet remained free. Jensen underscores the raw emotion in the room, noting that some audience members reacted throughout the hearing, including protestors who had made their way inside Also, Mia Alderman, grandmother of Mary Collins, delivered a powerful and emotional statement during the post-hearing media session. She recounted the horrific details of her granddaughter’s murder—stabbed over 130 times, left to bleed out in a bathtub, and hidden in a mattress. Alderman made it clear she was not there for political reasons, but to fight for justice and ensure Mary’s story is not forgotten. Despite suspects being charged, the case has yet to go to trial, and at least one of the accused remains out on bond. Her message was firm and heartfelt: “Mary matters.” Later, Jensen is joined by Congressman Pat Harrigan for an exclusive one-on-one interview to discuss the devastating rise in violent crime and the justice system failures that have allowed repeat offenders to remain on the streets. Harrigan reflects on the brutal murder of Iryna Zarutska in Charlotte, sharing how deeply it affected him as a father of two young daughters. He draws a direct connection between failed policies—particularly cashless bail—and preventable tragedies like the murders of Zarutska and Logan Federico. Harrigan criticizes a system that prioritizes criminals over victims and outlines how the federal government can respond, including using the power of the purse to pressure states into reform. He also responds to emotional testimony from victims’ families and highlights the need for real accountability. Listen here for all of this and more on Breaking With Brett Jensen. This week is the three year anniversary of Mary's torture and murder. Her family is still fighting for justice. Please relisten to this special episode, near and dear to our hearts. This podcast was founded on the need to bring a voice to those who are not able to speak for themselves- Stories of the voiceless is our tagline. That's never been more true than for the vulnerable population of people with disabilities. According to disabilityjustice.org “While each situation is unique, most violent crimes occur because people with disabilities are viewed as ‘easy targets' due to an assumption that they are less capable of defending themselves physically. People with developmental disabilities are at particular risk because their cognitive abilities and social skills may be compromised, making them more susceptible to predators.” Tonight we invite you to join one family's quest for justice and change in the name of their loved one, brutally murdered by people pretending to care for her. This is the case of Mary Santina Collins. During rare times when circumstances shift, including the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals have an opportunity “to look into our soul and see if we like what we see there.” Life for Deseret News reporter Lois Collins was a constant invitation to see things differently. Raised by blind parents, Collins had the opportunity to learn how to “see” in every sense of the word. Of her mother, Collins once wrote, “She taught me not to worry about the things you can't change, but never to walk away from those you can.” Now, after some four decades as a journalist writing about families and family policy, she joins the Church News podcast to talk about her parents, Frank and Mary Collins, and help listeners look inside themselves — and others — and see if they like what they find there.  The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen.
