"Depression is just a check engine light.""This is not the end of your story, this is literally the invitation to ultimately bring you back to yourself, to awaken... it's loving even though it's brutal."Ladies and gentlemen welcome back to the adventure cure. For today, episode #16,  we will continue the conversation with my dear friend Ruthie Lindsey, as she teaches us various tools that you can use to fully and better love yourself. For many of us, we can be our worst critics. I know I have certainly often been to myself, which has lead me down paths of self loathing, jealousy, and more than anything, shame. “We shame the shit out of ourselves,” Ruthie will tell us in a few minutes, but we are so human. Ruthie's ability to love herself fully and completely has translated into an unending ability to selflessly love others that is truly intoxicating. It's something we all can learn from, but it starts with how we talk to ourselves. A quick reminder on who Ruthie is and why she's worth listening to. Ruthie Lindsey is an award winning published author, an incredibly sought after speaker, and has amassed a huge social media following because of her ability to speak the unspoken and walk with people through pain and healing. Ruthie also hosted an excellent podcast called Unspoken for several seasons with a former guest on his podcast, Miles Adcox, owner of Onsite. In case you didn't listen to last weeks episode I don't know much about Ruthies story, much of what she teaches stems from the painful recovery of a near death experience she had at age 17. She was in a terrible car accident that nearly killed her, breaking broke her neck, rupturing her spleen and collapsing her lungs. Miraculously she survived with an emergency spinal fusion, but a few years later due to this injury, incredibly debilitating pain crept into her body and wrecked her life again. This time it lasted years, training her to her bed in a daze of painkillers, depression, and self loathing. She eventually was able to wean herself off the meds, get out of bed, and start a new life with an entirely new identity. This conversation is about a few of the tools she used then and continues to use to find healing, truth, and to step into the fullest, most joyful. and most loving version of herself. Also, if you enjoyed episode #1 with David Magee, Ruthie is Davids little sister. After searching for his family for 30 years, it was Ruthie he found first, which created an incredibly rich, emotional and immediate connection.A few details on what to expect, Ruthie will be guiding us through various wars to embrace who we are and in turn to be able to fully love others. We will learn about things like Reparenting, being in touch with your body, and using words and writing things down to help us understand ourselves better. website: http://www.ruthielindsey.com/her book: http://www.ruthielindsey.com/bookOther's Ruthie References:Tara Brach: (R.A.I.N.)  https://www.tarabrach.com/Father Richard Rohr: https://cac.org/about/our-teachers/richard-rohr/

What's your process for checking your self-awareness? How much of a priority are you putting on your emotional and mental wellness as a leader? When leaders are self-aware and emotionally fit, that's when they're truly integrated and whole leaders. In this episode, Miles Adcox, owner and CEO of Onsite, an internationally-known emotional wellness lifestyle brand that delivers life-changing personal growth workshops and leadership retreats, shares how to have longevity and accountability as a leader by weaving mental and emotional health practices into your culture.Show notes:You won't last long as a leader if you can't take care of your people. Taking care of the human first is important so that they can produce. Restoring, reflecting, reconnecting, recalibrating who we are so that we can better become who we're supposed to be professionally and personally. Self-awareness is the one thing in leadership that has this unspoken dilemma of a leader and therefore creates (because it's unspoken and unsaid in most environments) an obstacle, but it's only two degrees away from our biggest opportunity. Before you can even take care of others, you have to take care of yourself. Leaders who have shied away from vulnerable conversations or true audit and assessment about themselves and their own lives, should give it a go, and tell me after you finish if you think it's a soft skill or not. Because there's nothing soft about it. It's actually hard because it's counter-cultural. You can't hold a team accountable until you hold yourself accountable. Leadership can create abnormal life circumstances because it creates high levels of stress. Unaddressed stress creates anxiety, disconnection, loneliness, addictions, et cetera. All of which kill connection, true leadership. So whatever it is that makes a leader a leader, you signed up for a career when you're at the top of your game, to kill it. That's why it's a dilemma. As leaders, it's your job to start making mental and emotional health a priority and telling people on the front end here's what they're susceptible of and how to keep their magic and flow. If you take care of yourself you can do it, and here's the ecosystem and environment we're going to create to help you do so.One of the strongest tools that we can teach leaders and human beings is self-awareness. Self-awareness is underestimated because we assume if we're good with people and if we have influence that we assume that we're self-aware. Reading people well is not a predictor for being able to read yourself and assess what's going on with you. Self-awareness is something that should be maintained, worked on and grown. When leaders are self-aware and emotionally fit, that's when they're truly integrated and whole leaders. Knowing emotional intelligence and actually feeling it and integrating it are two different things. For additional links and resources, visit the episode webpage: https://nigelgreen.co/revenue-harvest/

Miles Adcox, Crystal Miller and Laura Hutfless are here to talk about Triumph Over Tragedy, a first-of-its-kind, trauma-informed therapy program providing tools, support and a safe community offering hope and healing for those affected by mass trauma. Thanks to private donations to The Onsite Foundation, the workshop is fully-funded by scholarships. As a survivor of Columbine and a member of the foundation’s Survivor Advisory Council, Crystal shares with us a detailed account of her experience during the attack on her school and tells us how the Triumph Over Tragedy program was designed to address the way trauma affects the brain and the body in different ways for everyone. Triumph Over Tragedy is inspired by the life of Austin Eubanks, who was also a Columbine survivor. Austin had a vision to create a safe place for survivors of mass shootings to find hope and healing. Austin passed away before his vision could become a reality, but his family and friends, including Laura, continue to carry on his legacy through this program. Laura and Miles share resources for survivors, family members and first responders. We also talk about grief, community, empathy and how we can show up for each other in times of loss, trauma or suffering. Our hope is that in sharing these stories, you would know that you are not alone. NOTE: The beginning of this conversation contains graphic discussions of the April 20, 1999 Columbine mass shooting tragedy. If you have been affected by mass shootings, gun violence or other traumas, this language could be activating and we recommend starting this episode around the 30 minute mark. Dr. Brad Reedy is the Clinical Director/Co-Owner of Evoke Therapy Programs. Brad discusses his long career as a wilderness clinician as well as his newest book, "The Audacity to be You." He shares his remarkable journey from being a high school drop out in California to earning his Ph.D. at Brigham Young University to getting hired as a clinician at Aspen Achievement without any wilderness experience. Brad went on to join Second Nature Wilderness as a clinician and then to be a co-founder of Evoke. From Evoke's webpage: Dr. Reedy began his studies at Brigham Young University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Family Science. Next, he attended Loma Linda University where he received an M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy and then returned to B.Y.U. and completed his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy. Brad's research and clinical experience includes parenting issues, family trauma, treatment with sexual abuse victims, domestically violent offenders, adults/adolescents with substance abuse issues, eating disordered patients, sexual perpetrators, attachment issues, developmental psychology and children suffering with grief and loss. Brad works with a variety of populations that often include students with dual diagnoses and gifted intelligence. He has served on the board of the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs and the Utah Department of Child and Family Services. After years as a parent educator having broadcast over 1000 webinars on parent and family issues, Brad released the book, The Journey of the Heroic Parent: Your Child's Struggle and the Road Home. Using his personal story and stories from thousands of clients, he shares wisdom on how to think about parenting. Parents are asked to shift from relying on experts for advice to learning how to think about parenting questions by truly understanding themselves and doing their own work. Miles Adcox, Onsite CEO, praises the work as a "must-read for any parent" and Harriet Lerner, author of The Dance of Anger, calls Brad a "gentle, authentic and wise guide." Most recently, (with his partners Rick Heizer & Matt Hoag), Brad envisioned a company that focused on the whole health of the people it served as well as it's employees. In this spirit, they founded Evoke Therapy Programs where Brad now serves as Clinical Director. He travels the country lecturing, running parenting workshops, and hosting weekly webinars to support parents and families. These broadcasts are also available on your podcast app. His parenting book is used as a foundational principle in the Evoke Therapy Programs model and is also used industry-wide to educate and support families. Born and raised in Orange County, California, the middle of three boys, Brad was raised by his mother. He grew up surfing, listening to Bob Dylan, and causing his mom a great deal of grief. Brad is married and has four children. He is an avid fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Angels and can be easily engaged in a debate on any sports-related topic.

While some might argue that showing emotion is a sign of weakness, emotional wellness coach Miles Adcox says that doing so actually makes you stronger—and twice as effective as a leader. Not to mention, stifling your emotions kills your creativity, can have serious health consequences (think anxiety and depression for starters), and often leads to burnout. Tune in as Miles shares how to become emotionally fit to prevent all that. You are not emotionally perfect. Neither am I. You have had some level of emotional strife in your life. Me too. So how are you coping with it? That is the question I posted on Facebook. I asked, “What in your life has most affected your emotional health, and how are you coping today?”Trauma, abuse, codependency, addiction, stress, burnout, childhood wounds, shame, family dysfunction, negative labels, other? The responses came in immediately and right off the bat hit issues such as Divorce, angry households, negativity, childhood trauma, birth defects, death of loved ones, domestic violence, addiction, codependency, bullying. But what you want to hear is...how ARE people coping? How are they healing and overcoming and finding success anyway. The topic came from my conversation with Emotional Fitness guru Miles Adcox, our muse in show 659. I’ll admit I am not equipped to address most of these issues and it was a pure gift to have Miles field them with his humility and experienced insight.  Learn more about your ad choices. What are the healthy habits of an emotional fitness sensei? I was curious too. Miles Adcox is our guest today, and after our main conversation with him in show 657, I was eager to walk with him through the seven spokes on the Ziglar Wheel of Life. Longtime show listeners know I find great peace and roots in the outdoors. Miles recently posted this in Instagram regarding the outdoors, “It’s been in my blood for generations and I’m thankful for Mother Nature and her unique way of taking me back home.” I was also intrigued to hear he has four guys he meets with three or four times per week to workout with. But not just a physical workout, they also give focus to the emotional and spiritual aspects of their lives. Regarding his habits to keep relationships well, he does "a lot of repair work." Meaning, he realizes "rips" are going to happen and his priority is making sure he makes adequate reparations.  These and other inspirations, in this show. Are you emotionally fit?  We dig into this, a topic directly related to how everyone perceives you, especially those closest to you. It is something you are acutely aware of in regards to everyone you know, though you may not really be conscious of it. What you will find out is how critical this root issue is to you very well being and overall success. I’ve heard of EQ for years, but never like this. The ability to understand and healthily deal with your own emotions, as well as others is something we are all flourishing or suffering from. Miles runs Onsite, an internationally-acclaimed emotional wellness lifestyle brand that delivers life-changing personal growth workshops, inspiring content, leadership retreats, and emotional treatment. I happened to start reading Donald Miller’s book “Scary Close”, a memoir, and right off in the book he enrolls himself in an Onsite retreat with Miles. That had me hooked. From there I started researching emotional fitness. The question is, where is your emotional health and how is it helping or hurting you? Let’s hear from the master, Miles Adcox. One of the bravest, most impactful good changes we can make is to care for our emotional wellness. Each day we carry so many thoughts, memories and dreams that shape the stories we tell about ourselves. When we’re ready to live a new story, or maybe learn a little more about how to better care for ourselves, therapy can be a long-lasting tool to help us take off our mask, heal our shame, and forge a path toward vulnerability and authentic, joyful living. Miles Adcox is the CEO of Onsite, an emotional wellness lifestyle brand that delivers life-changing personal growth retreats to help people discover a better future. Miles is known far and wide for his expertise and has been part of Dr. Brené Brown’s Rising Strong Day and TEDx. He gives us a slew of resources about how to find the best therapist for us, and what we can expect to learn about ourselves as we take time to dig deeper. Enneagram Threes, or The Achievers, see a world in which people only value others for what they can do versus for who they are. They tend to be driven, task-oriented, visionaries, goal crushers who want to avoid failure at all costs.  Threes are very concerned with what other people think of them and are able to look in anybody’s eyes and respond instinctively to whether or not they're being approved or disapproved of in the moment, and then tweaking or projecting a specific image to make sure they stay in approval. But sometimes Threes have a hard time settling in on their type because the underlying motivation doesn’t seem to fit quite right. We’ve talked about subtypes and how they can make a type look and act in three different ways. But, another way we learn about people in their types is through, what are called, Hornevian groups, based on the work of Karen Horney, or stances. What they indicate for us is the social style of each type, or the direction we move in, in relationship to people. There are three styles: the assertive stance, the withdrawing stance, and the earning stance.  In today’s episode, Miles Adcox joins Ian to talk about each stance and how knowing your stance can help you find your type. Miles Adcox is an entrepreneur, speaker, host, and coach.
