Carl Orff's Carmina Burana is probably the most-performed choral work of the past one hundred years. O Fortuna – its opening and closing – is one of the most recognisable choral pieces ever, used everywhere from adverts to computer games to talent shows. Why is it so popular? What gives it its impact? And why do some people have very negative feelings towards it? vol. 1 episode 9Greetings,What's the point of it all? Are we enslaved hamsters on a wheel going nowhere, or are we participants in and witnesses to a never-ending wave of cycles and patterns that turn like the seasons, whirling its majesty through and around us?It's a topic Elisabeth and I get into in this episode, musing how even when we think we're in control, maybe we're not, and when we think we're acting of our own accord, we're just fulfilling our destiny. Most of all, why astrology can be trusted to give us the keys to the ride, and a map for the journey, even if it's a circular one.Ironically, we kick off philosophizing with silliness that turns out to be utterly on point. If you're a Cole Porter fan and know his song “Let's Call the Whole Thing Off”, and you're familiar with this rousing ass-kicker by Carl Orff:then you'll get my stupid intro joke. But even if you're not, what's faaahscinating, as Elisabeth would say, is that without realizing it, in our goofiness, we allude to this early 20th Century German work, one of the classical Western canon's greatest hits, that points to the very conversation we have about the nature of human existence. Funny how that happens…these little synchronicities of life. Carmina Burana's opening piece, “O Fortuna”, laments that no matter how hard the narrator tries to live his up and down, hierarchical life, that damned other paradigm, the one that features the Wheel of Life, just keeps pulling him under. I mean, what a crank. All he can see is that whatever he tries to build and hold on to disappears. He's pretty bitter about it, too: “Fate, monstrous and empty, you whirling wheel, you are malevolent…” yada, yada. Lots of complaining. Here's the full text if you want to get a load of all that tsuris. But, as this fun video performance of the work shows by way of some spectacular special effects, structures of stone and steel do eventually collapse, even the cathedrals we have imbued over centuries with the ideals and beliefs we hold sacrosanct. It is inevitable because Nature, which includes the wheeling cosmos, is the ultimate paradigm, the one that will always supersede the straight up and down linear one. The grousing over dashed aims, such as in “O Fortuna”, is the sound of self pity that arises when Saturn, god of structure, tradition, and karma (among many other areas of human experience) meets with Neptune, bringer of dreams and inspired visions, but also soggy, foggy, delusions. Is it possible for these two visions of reality to exist and more to the point, function simultaneously instead of piteously? Well, one of these paradigms is currently falling down around our ears while the other one rolls on…that alone should tell us that we are the ones insisting on our limitations by trying to keep Saturnian things like corporations and governments “in line”. Maybe if we choose to accept the wheel as the true pattern of life instead of the line, then the line becomes more productive, a spoke instead of the point of it all. We do need structure, after all. In this episode, we talk about how this dynamic is currently taking shape in the US, as Saturn and Neptune are unable to see each other from where they currently are traveling in the heavens, but how being blind to one another, they still each have a line of site to all the other celestial components that signal what goes in to making a society civil, or not. How will this play out?Well, lots of things have to happen between now and the summer of 2025, but Elisabeth in her inimitable way of clearly breaking down the technical stuff, explains why by then, we should have a pretty good idea as to whether the US will succeed in switching paradigms, or will commit itself to living, and now clearly dying, by the sword of Damocles we set up over all our heads when we insisted on building a nation predicated on the hierarchy of genocide and slavery. After all, you can't hold your place in a straight line unless you determine that some people don't deserve to ever be ahead of you in that line. You'd have to kill and chain them back! Will enough of us conclude the dream/delusion of specialness conferred by donning these Neptunian, shimmery robes embroidered with “entitled to be first” were woven from a fantastical betrayal, more than they were made of reality? How might the energy of that dream/delusion be repurposed if enough of us slip out of these robes and seek to try on something else?At the very least, think of the summer of 2025 as a critical turning point. We make a few predictions, too, including when I suggest that our generation's Emmett Till moment, currently being called for by a lot of people across all sectors of society, is coming, probably as early as this weekend when Venus meets Uranus. What would such a moment look like, and why will it be shocking? Elisabeth wants me to issue a trigger warning for how I go about telling you, but that annoyed me, so this is our compromise. Consider yourself warned. I think it's well past time we get graphic if that is what it takes to rip down the curtain of secrecy that shrouds the priests of patriarchy, the pillars of the linear paradigm, the sickos who are just fine with our nation's children being decimated. However, although we recorded this before the Congressional hearings about the insurrection on January 6, 2021, I am writing these show notes after a night of fast and furious texting between myself and Elisabeth about the riveting and shocking (Uranus) testimony by female Capitol Hill Police Officer Caroline Edwards (Venus), the first police victim to testify. In graphic, disturbing detail, she told how she endured hours of hand-to-hand combat:"There were officers on the ground, they were bleeding. They were throwing up. … I saw friends with blood all over their faces. I was slipping in people's blood.“When I fell behind that line … I can just remember my breath catching in my throat because what I saw was just a war scene,” Edwards said. “It was carnage. It was chaos.”And we answer a listener's question: why is Elisabeth so much gloomier about the future than I am? By way of explanation, Elisabeth offers a nifty Chinese proverb that when my husband overheard it as I was editing this podcast, he said it's featured in the rather good and surprisingly humorous Tom Hanks' movie, Charlie Wilson's War. That movie gives some context to how a short-sighted decision not to remain in Afghanistan in the 80s paved the way for the Twin Towers to be brought down. The moral of the story in both the movie and Elisabeth's telling of it, being that if you can't see how the good and bad always contour one another, you risk being ill-prepared for what is to come. Put another way, nothing's over until it's over. Two other interesting events of note that happened after we wrapped production of this podcast: actor and Uvalde, Tex., native, Matthew McConaughey's impassioned speech in favor of no more weapons of war in our streets, and in which he asks about how do we prove we value what we say matters, yet another theme of this episode; and, a suicidal-homicidal man was arrested after he called authorities asking for help to prevent killing Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, a bizarre story that fully illustrates every current transit Elisabeth spells out is happening now, including that between May 29 and today, June 10, the only exact aspects among the planets are ones that involve the Moon. That leaves lots of space between all the other kids in the cosmic sandbox. Will they start throwing sand in each other's eyes? Or, as the Moon is carrying the light of all the other celestial bodies to and from one another, will the she help them see one another more clearly, especially as they try to inform Saturn of what Neptune has to say, and vice versa…If you'd like to learn more about the forecast that precipitated this podcast, including why Elisabeth is itching to share just what it is in McConaughey's chart that she says makes it plainly clear that he'd be a rising star right about now, and that the right wing media would attack him, then please visit her website: graceastrology.comFor more about me, poke around this page here. One animal that has seen it's fair share of importance, but mostly infamy, while rising through the superstitious minds of human history is the owl. A couple of the owl's powers that people believe in are possessing the ability to commune with our ancestors while being a spawn from the underworld. Nonetheless, the majority of people believe it is here to cause mischief and misfortune for us earth-walkers until the end of days. We can find the owl's influence as far back as Sumerian culture, the ancient Greeks, and even in todays masonic architectural layout of Washington D.C. (seriously go check out some pictures of it). The owl has been linked to various cryptids like todays subject and even the infamous Mothman of Point Pleasant as well as the descriptions of some people's encounters with extraterrestrials. The owl has vigorously gripped within it's talons; the human psyche. Overpowering it with the dominance and authority that it holds in the realm of the supernatural. From this supernatural uprising, we have the Stikini from Seminole Peoples folklore. A human/avian hybrid that shapeshifts between forms depending on the time of day. During daylight hours, the monster turns human, indistinguishably. It blends into society, staking out the lay of the land and scouting for potential prey. Upon nightfall, the Stikini turns into a murderous, bipedal, avian humanoid and seeks out the hearts of it's victims. A true supernatural serial killer if you ask us. Unfortunately, with the majority of Seminole peoples folklore being of oral tradition, we don't have too much information on the Stikini and therefore it may be somewhat lost to history. Nevertheless, if you find this legend hard to believe in, that doesn't make it any less real for others... My guest of this episode is William F. Mann, who has been a freemason for 30 years and written several books, part of them non-fiction, part of them fiction but nearly all of them revolving around Masonic history and concepts. William was born in the 1950s and from an early age on he was interested in solving puzzles and following clues to discover hidden meanings of his surroundings. His father's family had a rich Masonic tradition as far as it could be traced back and from his mother's side William had the chance to be introduced to North American indigenous traditions. Today, William is the Supreme Grandmaster of the Sovereign Great Priory of Canada and lives in Ontario. In this episode of the show we will discuss topics that might be completely off the radar of many of our listeners as we in Europe have sometimes little knowledge about the ideas and concepts in occulture that are very specific to certain parts of North America. Hopefully this episode will be even more fascinating and also lead to some further research and exchange of thoughts. One focus of our conversation will be William's notion concerning the role of the Knights Templar in North America having published ‘The Knights Templar in the New World: How Henry Sinclair Brought the Grail to Acadia', ‘The Templar Meridians: The Secret Mapping of the New World' and ‘Templar Sanctuaries in North America: Sacred Bloodlines and Secret Treasures'. We'll talk about his ideas that inspired him to write these books and the conclusions he draws upon. In this context we will first shed some light upon the general history of the Knights Templar in medieval Europe and then William will introduce us to the concept of the Knights Templar embarking on transatlantic expeditions to North America. We're also going to explore a highly fascinating idea concerning certain similarities between Templar and indigenous rituals in North America and their respective core concepts and elements as well as potential historical interactions and relationships between both groups sharing their wisdom on a basis of mutual respect and acceptance. Of course, William's most recently published book with Inner Traditions, ‘The Last Refuge of the Knights Templar: The Ultimate Secret of the Pike Letters' based on a series of 33 letters in the late 1800s between Confederate General Albert Pike and British Colonel James Wilson Bury MacLeod Moore will be of special interest. In the end, we'll mention one of William's upcoming projects to investigate early Templar settlements and the evidence of ancient civilisations in North America with a group of Masonic geologists which might ultimately culminate in a new book. William Mann's author page with Inner Traditions Here you will find  all of William Mann's books and where to get them Music played in this episode The three - very diverse - music tracks in this episode follow the idea of reinventing something ancient in a new style, which is coming from our modern times. 1) PRELIATOR by Globus - sung by Lisbeth Scott When I first heard this track, I immediately thought of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" (O Fortuna). But then I realized even though it sounds similar, it is different. It is medieval thought reimagined with the sound of today, but goes beyond Carmina, because it also heavily involves sound enhancement technology. Fascinating! (Track starts at 7:07) 2) ECHOES OF THE TEMPLE by Ghenwa Nemnom Lebanon, a land where in the 11th century the Templars were an important political factor, is the home to this music. Yes, it's time for a genuine “round table” discussion: this episode we look back at Excalibur, John Boorman's 1981 whirlwind tour of Arthurian legend. Based on the 15th-century prose work Le Morte d'Arthur by Thomas Malory, which collected together many popular legends about King Arthur and his knights, Boorman's film takes us from Arthur's conception through to his death, taking in the rise and fall of Camelot and the quest for the Holy Grail. Cerpen ketiga berjudul Carmina Burana. Selamat mendengarkan.

Forty years ago, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table got the blockbuster treatment with John Boorman's 1981 production retelling the classic tales. Starring Nigel Terry as Arthur and Nicol Williamson as Merlin, the film also features Gabriel Byrne, Helen Mirren, Patrick Stewart, Liam Neeson, and Ciarán Hinds in some of their earliest film roles. Shot entirely on location in Ireland, the movie boasts a dazzling production design, elaborate (and shiny) costumes, and music from Carl Orff, whose “O Fortuna” from the cantata Carmina Burana was used in the film's trailer. ---------------------- O Fortune, like the moon you are changeable, ever waxing ever waning; hateful life first oppresses and then soothes playing with mental clarity; poverty and power it melts them like ice. Fate – monstrous and empty, you whirling wheel, you are malevolent, well-being is vain and always fades to nothing, shadowed and veiled you plague me too; now through the game I bring my bare back to your villainy. Fate is against me in health and virtue, driven on and weighted down, always enslaved. So at this hour without delay pluck the vibrating strings; since Fate strikes down the strong, everyone weep with me! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/john-kennedy98/message

The boys open episode 6 discussing improv comedy— specifically reminiscing over the brilliance of the duo that is Colin Mochrie and Ryan Stiles from Whose Line is it Anyway. Embracing their example, the boys try and fail at ridiculous segues. The implications of a hilarious meme (When you see Superman using the car you're still making payments on as a weapon) leads into the conversation of superhero insurance policies. Discussing readily available references from Amazon's The Boys and the corporate exploits of the billion dollar company, Vaught, the STFF boys touch on hero worship, propaganda, brainwashing, and the in's and out's of hush money in a world where collateral damage is just another Monday. Our Weekly Writing Prompt comes to us from Reddit User orangek1tty: Turns out God was a slacker and gave "Free Will" to not have to "plan" anything. He kicked out Lucifer cause he was a control freak. When you die turns out you have a choice, between a chaotic rule free Heaven or a smoothly machine operated Hell. With undesirable circumstances in either choice, the boys debate the specific boundaries associated with “super heaven” and “super hell”. After literally playing Devil's advocate, they land on a discovery that the afterlife might just be a direct parallel of everyday life…just suped up. Weekdays are spent working in Hell, while the weekends are saved for some R&R in my timeshare in Heaven. Taha opens things up with a Breaking Bad fanfiction with an interesting concept. Author Villakulla's White Light takes a look at the quiet death of Jessie Pinkman years after the events of Breaking Bad and El Camino as we follow his train of thought during a heart attack. Post-read, they discuss the very serious ramifications of addiction, as well as the profound impact of mentors and influential figures that shape us. Hunter follows up with a BBC's Sherlock and Doctor Who crossover that pits our 221B Baker Street boys against a terrifying enemy. O Fortuna by MegaFrost4, capturing the humor and pacing of the BBC show, introduces the Weeping Angels as an adversary to both the Doctor as well as Sherlock and Watson. After reading the introductory chapter, the boys theory-craft what is to come as they discuss the likely competitive relationship between Sherlock and the Doctor, and the adventures that lie in store for them all against this incredibly dangerous enemy.

The Ghosts of Christmas Eve . Dante wants to know why some people have it good and some have it bad. Virgil, seemingly impatient, sets into his sermon on the goddess Fortune who controls this world. It's boiler-plate Boethius, as you'll see. But it may be a lot more, too. Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we take a slow stroll with Dante-the-pilgrim and his (current) guide Virgil across the known universe in this podcast, WALKING WITH DANTE. We've come to the back part of Canto VII of INFERNO. We've seen those who hoard their wealth and those who spend too much. And Virgil's got some sort of answer. Trouble is, it's not a very satisfying answer. Nor are standard interpretations of this passage from INFERNO. Here are the segments of this episode: [01:03] I read the whole bit of Canto VII all the way up to and through this passage. It's my English translation--and I want you to hear the sweep of the canto to understand what I see as the strangeness of Virgil's sermon on fortune. [06:38] A series of very light glosses on this passage--just walking you through it to explain some of the more opaque lines (or at least opaque if you're not a medieval or haven't read the whole COMEDY already!). [13:00] Stepping back, let's look at Virgil's sermon. First off, it's from Boethius' work ON THE CONSOLATION OF PHILOSOPHY. I'll explain that connection. But I'll also highlight the interpretive knots Dante-the-poet ties in what should be a boiler-plate rehearsal from a classical figure's work. And I'll offer four interpretive stances you can take to Virgil's sermon on Fortune: 1) Virgil's wrong, 2) Virgil's character is changing, 3) Virgil's right but in a limited way, and 4) this passage isn't about Virgil at all but instead the start of the progress of revelation about the nature of the universe in COMEDY. You've gotta start somewhere. Here's as good as any a place! Support this podcast

« Mars, the Bringer of War » (de Gustav HOLST) 7. Update: The audio is kinda bad for the first 6 minutes, then gets better. I was experimenting with some noise filtering that apparently did not work at all. Sorry about that!Tod & Claire discuss H.P. Lovecraft's "The Cats of Ulthar," which was written one hundred years ago today, but published in the November 1920 issue of Tryout, and later republished the February 1926 issue of Weird Tales. You can either listen to the last episode and pretend it is being told by our cat, or read it yourself for free. One musical cue is from He's the Houscat (Arthur's Theme) by Alexander Smith and Stuart Wellington, and another is O Fortuna by Carl Orff. See if you can tell which is which! Finally, I offer my most sincere apology for my casual and boorish use of the term "gypsy," a slur that Claire points out that Lovecraft did not use in describing the traders from the south. My bad.

We are going backwards in this coffee break. For the past few shows we have heard how composers have expanded the sound of previous composer's works. This time we start off with a larger version of Carmina Burana then go smaller. Orff's disciple Wilhelm Killmayer in 1956 created a reduced version for soloists, SATB mixed choirs. children's choir, two pianos and six percussion (timpani+5). This version, authorized by Orff himself, allowed smaller ensembles the opportunity to perform the piece. We also sneak in Mozart's and Goosen's variations of Handel's Messiah. It’s here! Podcast 100!! Nine years in and still going strong. Though I should add, this episode may have been my most difficult ever.    The genesis came from a discovery made a few months back while going through old boxes back home in Texas. My mom came across three mix cassette tapes I made back in 1998. That summer, at 16, I went on an off-road / camping / wilderness adventure trip to the northern tip of Australia. It was amazing but there was a lot of driving so they told us to bring mix tapes. It was basically my first podcast episode! In addition to finding the tapes, I also knew where to find the journal I kept during the trip. A journal (handwritten in cursive!) that I had never reread and that I knew featured a lot of focus on a girl I met. So, sure to be embarrassing but probably also a good read. With tapes and journal in hand, I thought I had podcast gold and the episode would write itself. I was very mistaken on that front, which I discuss in the episode. It came out great though. Very happy with this milestone episode. There are some classics on there.    In addition to finishing episode 100, I have also finished making Spotify playlists of all 100 podcast episodes. You can find them all at ActiveListener. There are songs missing from almost every episode and I have tried to note that in the playlist details but overall it's pretty good. They work as great seed playlists for further discovery and Spotify generated radio stations. Also, for those that want to go deeper on the Australia mixes, I made playlists of each tape in it's entirety.    I hope you all have a great New Years! In Episode 22 we travel to the distant Hyborian era with Basil Poledouris’ muscular score for 1982’s Conan the Barbarian. It’s the 80s and we love shopping because it’s totally rad! The only thing better than going to the mall is working there! Like wow! In this episode Steve returns to help the guys review the robot morality tale, The Chopping Mall. Tough one to find for streaming & the rights have passed back and forth between distributors. You can buy the DVD on Amazon if you wish. For no reason whatsoever two characters from the film Eating Raoul are in the opening? One of our party girls/heroines is Kelli Maroney who is also in the 80s classic, Night of the Comet. Hey! It’s the smart kid from Head of the Class & two of the Karate Kid films. Meanwhile, Steve is lost in the lingerie department. We are fascinated by the amount of skin flicks director Jim Wynorski has made. We learn that character actor Gerrit Graham made $600 as a player in this film. Steve is enjoying the 80s hair. “8 pounds of Aqua Net.” Chris wishes that actress doing a striptease was humming “O Fortuna”. Dick Miller from Gremlins is our grumpy janitor. Certainly the key to stopping the killer robots is, “Klaatu barada nikto!” What the hell is with these lasers? How do they work? This mall has gasoline, propane, M16 rifles, auto parts and a paint store. The film within the film is Attack of the Crab Monsters and it may actually be better than this one. 1986 was a monster year for film. Short Circuit, the non-slasher robot film finished 21st above Pretty in Pink. Steve recommends Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Thank you and have a nice day. Support Film Frown on Patreon

Who can pull the sword from the stone? Will it be Paul, Chris, or Colette? What’s the creepiest way to say someone is pregnant? Also, what’s with that green light? “AND CUT!” Want to watch this film (at your own risk)? It’s available for digital rental from the following services: iTunes Google Play Youtube Hilariously, we had originally a link to Target Ticket in here, but apparently that service is no more. Let the commentary begin! Colette was immediately surprised by the adult scenes in this film having seen it on TV so many times. Paul can’t help compare this film to the Merlin television show. John Boorman, the director of this film is the same man who brought us last season’s favorite, Zardoz. Excalibur was a hit when it came out in 1981. Hey, maybe this isn’t a bad movie? The Hobo font doth not flatter ye, film. Nicol Williamson plays Merlin. He’s a similar character in the bad movie, Spawn. When you don’t hide CGI in the dark, you get The Golden Compass. Paul thinks the glowing green sword might be light saber like. Igrayne gives everyone an innocent dance & then channels Tawny Kitaen. Is Uther riding to the Duke’s castle on fog & lust or is this a TriStar picture? Clan of the Cave Bear Igrayne is played by the director’s daughter, Katrine Boorman. That’s right, dad is giving her direction in a nude sex scene with Gabriel Byrne. A young Captain Picard shows up in this film. He’ll be followed by other youngsters like Liam Neeson and Helen Mirren. Behind the Sword in the Stone is documentary about Excalibur that has not been distributed yet, but you can see an excerpt here. Live listener &!(bitandbang) enjoys the new tag line Chris has for the film, “Patrick Stewart jousts the hell out of some dude.” Is Merlin Rasputin or Yoda? Has Arthur entered the forest or the Dark Side Cave? “What’s that song?” wonders Paul. Live listener &!(bitandbang) answers, “O Fortuna”. Click that link to see a recap of the film and hear the song. The Cave of Time is no Cave of Wonders. The guys compare bad lines & shaky plot bits to Empire Strikes Back and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Boy Mordred is played by the director’s son, Charley Boorman who now does a lot of documentary TV. Chris compares the weird gold armor with nipples to the Joel Schumacher Batman & Robin bat suit. Lesson learned? You go into a room or tent and see someone you don’t expect in your mother’s clothes? Don’t ask questions, you kill that person! Listener &!(bitandbang) suggests we watch City of Lost Children. The final fight between Arthur and his son is going to be like a Mortal Kombat video game! It looks like a heavy metal album cover! Yet, it is completely anticlimactic. For a real end fight you have to go to revengeofthe.ninja from season 1. Recommendations: Star Knight, or perhaps some TV, Merlin. Support Film Frown on Patreon
