On today's episode, Jason gets the party started by quick a preview of the upcoming NFC and AFC Championship games from a betting perspective. Patrick Mahomes' ankle injury is obviously the biggest story of the week in the AFC, and in the NFC all eyes remain focused on the trenches. If you can find an early edge on either game you should definitely jump on it. Moreover, all of these teams are very talented, but one of the biggest reasons why the Cincinnati Bengals, Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers are in the final four is that they were able to build out their rosters around quarterbacks who are still on their rookie deal contracts (Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts and Brock Purdy). There is no one way to win in the NFL but this definitely seems to be the most effective. Later, The Athletic Lakers beat writer Jovan Buha swings by to discuss Shannon Sharpe's viral moment over the weekend, how Rui Hachimura fits alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, what other potential trades could be coming down the pike before the deadline, the rationale behind pushing all-in on this current Lakers squad, which Western Conference teams pose the biggest challenge for Los Angeles and much more! The world woke up Monday to news that the relationship between Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets continued to deteriorate, and the star guard had permission to look for a sign and trade deal that would end his stay with the Nets. The Lakers, it was said, were the only team that showed interest. But Brooklyn, it was said, didn't want Russell Westbrook. So would it be a three-team deal? Four? How far would the Lakers go to simultaneously add the dynamic (if problematic) scorer and rid themselves of the Westbrook problem? Well, by 4 pm local time, it was a moot point. Kyrie announced, in the most pretentious way possible, he'll be staying with the Nets. Irving opts into the final year of his contract, and while that doesn't mean he can't be traded, it does mean he can't be part of a sign-and-trade that would bring him the contract Brooklyn seems unwilling to provide. So what does this situation say about Kyrie? The league's shifting approach to stars? The Lakers? And L.A.'s relationship to Westbrook? All of it is relevant and discussed herein. From there, it's a look at NBA free agency, which kicks off on Thursday. Specifically, The Athletic's Jovan Buha reports that Malik Monk, one of the team's few bright spots from last season, would be willing to take a little less to stay with the Lakers. Which would probably be required, were the Lakers to retain him. LA simply can't compete with what other teams can offer Monk, should they be so inclined. But even if the Lakers can give Monk their biggest available exception (a little over six million dollars) should they? Does Monk fill the greatest need in a summer where the Lakers have very few assets on hand? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Kyrie-to-LA heats up... then ends just as fast. SEGMENT 2: Why the Lakers handled this news cycle the right way, vis-a-vis Westbrook. SEGMENT 3: Should the Lakers use their taxpayer midlevel exception on Malik Monk, if that would keep him here? The Lakers have a lot of work to do this offseason, but one of the more foundational bits of business is figuring out what they still have in their star core. After two years of injuries scuttling seasons, is the core of LeBron James and Anthony Davis still one that can be reliably championship caliber? If the Lakers are nervous about the pairing, what exactly can they do to move on? Can they have Lebron but not necessarily go all in to win with him? This is the starting point of a two-part conversation with The Athletic's Jovan Buha, It kicks off answering the "What do they have?" question regarding James and Davis, and from there moves into "What can they get to make things better?" Should re-signing Malik Monk really be the team's top priority? Are there more pressing needs, even if Monk represents their most positive contributor from this season who isn't under contract? What else can the Lakers do? How much of the roster improvement is tied to the Westbrook deal? So many questions, with some difficult answers for the Lakers. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky (with Guest, Jovan Buha!) SEGMENT 1: Jovan, Andy and Brian debate the strength of the LeBron/AD core. Have injuries sucked away too much potential? SEGMENT 2: Jovan breaks down where the Lakers can go from here. With few avenues to improve, they'll have to be very smart about how they plan and execute an offseason strategy. The show - which covers issues ranging from LeBron James' future in Los Angeles to Rob Pelinka's difficult upcoming offseason to the Lakers' 2020 championship's place among other purple and gold titles to Anthony Davis' health to Russell Westbrook -is mostly centered around a comment left by Socrates Thalassos on the Locked On Lakers YouTube page: "Lakers future looks very bleak. Aging LBJ. Always Damaged Aggression Deficient. No draft picks-expect them to trade 27 and 29 to help with next year and to get off Russ. A passive aggressive drama fuels the next 3 years of LBJ, since I think he probably will sign the extension because he wants to stay in LA, not because he wants to stay with the Lakers. After that a totally empty cupboard with maybe Austin Reaves, Wenyen Gabriel and some undrafted projects in it. If we're lucky they'll be as much fun as the Baby Lakers were. Next title maybe 2035 if they're lucky. More likely 2040. But hey a bubble championship in 2020!... Or blow it up, trade AD and LBJ for as much as you can get, let Russ play out his contract without spending assets to get rid of him and jump start the whole process. With any luck, in 3 to 5 years you're a contender again." That led to all sorts of discussion. It starts with a quick review of the way the roster performed - or didn't, more precisely - as logged by The Athletic's Jovan Buha in his Lakers Report Card. The point wasn't to parse the grades, but note how badly the Lakers missed on most of what they did, which explains the pessimism of Socrates. From there, it's LeBron talk. What happens if he's committed to Los Angeles and to staying here, even if he doesn't believe the Lakers will be able to deliver another title? Could the Lakers sell him, and the fans, on a vision that doesn't have them talking title in October? And finally, Socrates' comment about the bubble title prompted a Twitter inquiry that got A TON of response. How connected are Lakers fans to the 2020 title? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers get grades. What do they reveal about the roster? SEGMENT 2: How much do LeBron's priorities matter if his on-court output looks like it typically does? Could management sell fans on something short of high end title contention next year?
