We're excited to welcome back Allegra Rosenberg, who's written a new article for us on contemporary Beatles fandom: "The Beatles Live! New generations of fans are cultural archaeologists, working with the materials of the past to create the passion of the present." The Beatles: Live at the BBC was released in 1994. The album contained 50+ tracks from some of the 50+ programs the Beatles played on for the BBC during 1962-65. The album was a big hit, selling over 8 million copies, and it was a particular favorite for Dave and Chris who waited in line at a Best Buy in Champaign-Urbana, IL to buy it and get a free poster! We talk about the album, choose our top 10 songs from the album, choose some of the songs that didn't work very well (usually because of the sound quality), and much more. If you haven't pulled out the album in years, now would be a great time to do so! It was also remastered in 2013, so you could get that version as well. A Day In The Life".
In this episode of Rock is Lit, we're deviating from the world of fiction to explore the riveting reality of rock ‘n' roll. Laurie Kaye is here to talk about her brand-new memoir, ‘Confessions of a Rock 'N' Roll Name-Dropper: My Life Leading Up to John Lennon's Last Interview'. 60 MINUTES POUR LE MEILEUUR DE LA MUSIQUE
No less an authority than Mark Lewisohn knows that the skiing scene in "Help!" was filmed in Stowe VT, during the 1997 Winter X-Games, exclusively on ESPN. But before (ahem, #apres) skiing was a very Beatles activity, Stowe was known as a small British boys school (Ringo! Ringo!), where the Beatles gave one of their longer and most interesting concerts whilst on the cusp of British fame. Recently, a tape surfaced of the mostly complete show, and like the Star Club release in 1970's, this one is truly a mammoth moment in Beatles history. Tony & T.J. gab fab on the concert, the set list, and the immense historical significance. And because they're morons, they also ponder:
Musician and Musicologist Mike Daley joins host Paul Romanuk to talk about The Beatles much bootlegged and sort of, kind of, semi-officially released live recordings from The Star-Club in Hamburg, West Germany in 1962.SHOW NOTES:-we talk about it, but for a much more detailed account of the Star-Club tapes and how this whole mess came to be, check out this page-there are several versions of these tapes, the one we talk about was a Canadian release called Pickwick Star Club, Vol. 2. Here is a YouTube playlist that Mike put together of the version we talk about in this episode and the corresponding track order.-here's a page of images of The Star-Club from "back in the day". The building it was in burned down in 1987.-we talk about the so-called de-mixing technology that might be used to restore the audio that exists from the Star-Club shows. The best version of this technology as of this writing is the one that was used by director Peter Jackson for The Beatles Get Back film from 2021. It was also used to de-mix the instruments on the recent re-issue of Revolver, that were locked in on one track. Here's an article that explains how the technology works.-Here's Mike Daley's website: https://mikedaleymusic.com/

Musician and songwriter Alun Piggins talks to host Paul Romanuk in Part 2 of our look at The Beatles 1994 album The Beatles Live At The BBC. Tracks discussed in this episode include I Feel Fine, Ticket To Ride and Love Me Do. Although his grunge days are behind him, Alun used to front The Morganfields, a grunge band that enjoyed a run of success in the early 90s in Canada. He's put out some decent solo albums since those days; you can find out all about those records at Alun's website: https://www.alunpiggins.com (alunpiggins.com) His https://alunpiggins.bandcamp.com (Bandcamp page) is here. There's loads of information out there about The Beatles BBC sessions. I think one of the best online stops is at https://www.beatlesbible.com (BeatlesBible.com) - here is their page on the https://www.beatlesbible.com/features/beatles-bbc-radio-recordings/ (BBC Sessions), with detail about what tracks were played on what shows.
Alun Piggins, the former front man of the Canadian, early 90s, grunge band The Morganfields, drops by on this episode to talk with host Paul Romanuk about The Beatles 1994 release The Beatles Live At The BBC. Alun's music - both playing in bands and as a solo artist - has been heavily influenced by his early days spent listening to Beatles records. He talks about those influences as well as telling a few great stories about his days spent playing bars and clubs around the world (the "Detroit Concert" story from when he was with The Morganfields is laugh out loud funny). Be sure to check out Alun's great website for loads of info about him, his career and his music at https://www.alunpiggins.com/ (alunpiggins.com) Here's a link to his https://alunpiggins.bandcamp.com/ (Bandcamp page). Although I do talk about this in the episode, https://www.beatlesbible.com/features/beatles-bbc-radio-recordings/ (here is a more detailed listing) of all of The Beatles appearances at the BBC and what they played on each show.

Whereas, according to John in 1970, The Beatles “used to jump around and do all the things they're doing now, like going on stage with toilet seats and shitting and pissing” when they were in Hamburg, everything changed when fame and fortune came knocking. “As soon as we made it, we made it, but the edges were knocked off,” he told Rolling Stone. “The music was dead before we even went on the theatre tour of Britain. We were feeling shit already because we had to reduce an hour or two's playing—which we were glad about in one way—to 20 minutes every night. The Beatles' music died then, as musicians. That's why we never improved as musicians: we killed ourselves then to make it. And that was the end of it.” In some respects, certainly. But during 1963 and 1964 they were still on fire onstage, feeding off the energy of their rabid fans—before ultimately feeling like they were being fed to those same fans. In this show, we run through some of their best recorded performances in front of an audience during the touring years—on radio, TV and in concert. A future episode will focus on their most interesting ones. Missing live music as much as we are? This week we offer you an hour-long escape to 1966 Japan, where the Fab Four played their iconic concerts at Budokan. Maybe not their most polished performances, but definitely memorable, and definitely a portrait of the Beatles in a critical moment of transition, fresh off their Revolver recording sessions. We've got lots of music in store for you, along with: All of TJ's favorite 1980s deodorant and bratwurst commercials A bit of Tony's junior high pop music lust A tribute to the great Terri Hemmert and her commitment to awful Beatles covers And, of course, the obligatory cheap shots at poor Pete Best. In this episode of the Podcast, I talked about when The Beatles debuted on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, 57 years ago... I talked about the struggle that The Beatles dealt with when they tried to get into America in 1963 in which they succeed with "I Want To Hold Your Hand"... Before I talked about The Beatles debut on the Ed Sullivan Show, in the open of the podcast, I talked about the passing of my late cousin Güero Verdugo Valencia who had passed away on February 8, 2021 due to complications from a stroke that he had a few months ago... I talked about what a great guy he was and how he was the head of the family and how he always kept the family together... And he was a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys as well as everyone else is in the family... He will be missed by those who knew him best... --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This week, Tom Brennan joins the show as we discuss the technology, its origins (Capitol's "Duophonic" stereo, "Out of Phase Stereo" isolations), how it found its way into products including "The Beatles: Rock Band" and "The Beatles - Live at the Hollywood Bowl" and the amazing things the community can do with tools available to everyone!

Another special bonus episode in which the guest is my Aunt Sue, who saw the Beatles live on their first American tour when she was in the sixth grade. We talk about this momentous event, whether or not it was fair that she didn't bring her sister Carol, how she feels about various other events in Beatles history and how she was briefly engaged to Paul McCartney.
Part two of our vinyl+ "Dutch Import" series. This week we look at the Beatles Live underground releases that eventually begat the only legitimate release "The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl" in 1977. We then follow up with more tracks from the "NOT THE BEATLES" collection, notably the SNL "Cheese and Onions" from "The only Rutle still living in New York City", and the forgotten February 1967 gem "L.S. Bumble Bee". Of the latter, Dudley Moore said "Regarding "The L.S. Bumble Bee", Peter Cook and I recorded that song about the time when there was so much fuss about L.S.D., and when everybody thought that "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" was a reference to drugs. The exciting alternative offered to the world was L.S.B.!, and I wrote the music to, in some ways, satirize the Beach Boys rather than the Beatles. But I'm grateful if some small part of the world thinks that it may have been them, rather than us !"
What if the events of December 8, 1980 played out completely differently and somehow, an unscathed John Lennon – bereft of any obstructions – was able to join his former bandmates in a live concert situation; perhaps more than one? In a subject suggested by a listener, Robert and Richard discuss the form that such a concert might take: what the set list and the staging might have looked like. Songs include “Here, There and Everywhere” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Find Richard’s books here. Find Robert’s books here. It occurred to us, as it must have with everyone else, that the release of Eight Days A Week really called for an accompanying soundtrack, or at least a parallel collection of music spanning the whole of The Beatles’ documented live performing career. Into that void Robert and Richard have stepped, with their proposed collection of live performances ranging from the Star Club to Candlestick. Necessarily, some of the extant audio is rough, but not unlistenable and certainly essential to understanding what kind of live musicians these guys were (and how they did it to an audience). Locales represented here include Hamburg – Stockholm – London – New York City – Melbourne – Blackpool – Paris – Houston – Tokyo – San Francisco. Find Richard’s books here. Find Robert’s books here. America Is Being Taken Away From You. By a Predatory Ruling Class that has no respect for you, your family, your job, your country, your Constitution -- and which has thoroughly "rigged" the system against the Middle Class. How long will the "nice" people of America allow this to go on? Time for some Schumpeterian "creative destruction"? We consider Professor Angelo Codevilla's statements on America at the "threshold of a revolution" brought about by "ruling class malfeasance, combined with insult." Meanwhile, Trump goes to Gettysburg. We visit with paterfamilias John Andrews on Hillary Clinton's "brownshirt" tactics and wild Russian conspiracy theories. Was the 1960 election stolen from Nixon? Also, notes on the increasing importance of our Second Amendment. Plus, a conversation with Jan Cook of Colorado Women For Trump.

In this episode, hear about the Beatles' 1965 American tour that took them across the country (and even into Canada a bit). We'll discuss the opening acts, the venues, the setlist, some of the special people they met along the way, and make the argument that this tour was the last real gasp of Beatlemania.

For this podcast, we imagined that the Beatles reunited for a concert/tour in 1979 and each came up with a set list for the first concert. We limited ourselves to 30 songs and had to make many tough choices! Listen to the podcast for other rules and for lots of sample clips from live performances of the songs we chose. What would you choose? Do like or dislike our choices? What did we forget? Our setlists run like this: Dave: Get Back, Day Tripper, A Hard Day's Night, Got to Get You Into My Life, Here Comes the Sun, Come Together, Coming Up, Whatever Gets You Through The Night, Live And Let Die, Ticket To Ride, Yellow Submarine, Maybe I'm Amazed, Money, Blow Away, Yesterday, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, Give Me Love (Peace on Earth), Lady Madonna, Rain, Band On The Run, Watching The Wheels, Something, In My Life, Hey Jude, I Saw Her Standing There, It Don't Come Easy, Let It Be, My Sweet Lord, Imagine, Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End Chris: Sgt. Pepper's, With A Little Help From My Friends, Help!, All My Loving, Something, Mind Games, Jet, Yer Blues, Every Night, In My Life, Can't Buy Me Love, Jealous Guy, Wah-Wah, I've Got A Feeling, I'm Only Sleeping, Photograph, Maybe I'm Amazed, God, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, All You Need is Love, Hey Jude, A Hard Day's Night, Hello Goodbye, Isn't It A Pity, A Day In The Life, Because, Yesterday, Imagine, Let It Be, Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End

In this episode, Diana and Dr. Duncan Driver dig into the second half of the Cleave interview visiting John's library, exploring his Phantom V Rolls Royce, and accompanying him to the doctor. John, as always, is entertaining and opinionated on the subject of money, power, and his future. This profile was originally written for the Evening Standard, and was titled, "How Does A Beatle Live?
