We have something truly special for this week's installment of #whatsavesus. FoG Staffers Asia Swartzentruber and Vera Goudie are your special EXCLUSIVE hosts this week with special guest Jess Fischli for a lovely and heartfelt discussion about Roberto Benigni's critically acclaimed and controversial film La Vita e' Bella (LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL). Set in the Italian countryside, what begins as a lovely romantic comedy soon takes on a darker sheen as the dangers of World War II threaten to destroy a family, forcing a father to do the only thing he knows how to do to protect his son's heart from the horrors around him -- convince him that it is all merely an elaborate game. At turns heartwarming and heartbreaking, in nearly equal measure challenging and inspiring, La Vita e' Bella stirred controversy upon its release with some claiming it made light of a tremendous tragedy while others praised its willingness to create a kind of fairy-tale about the power of finding joy amidst unspeakable tragedy. It is an incredibly effective film, and Vera, Jess, and Asia have an absolutely wonderful conversation about it which you do NOT want to miss.4:28 - Business Time5:08 - Whatcha Watchin' / Readin' / Listenin' To?21:34 - La Vita e' Bella (LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL)See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

SELF-LOVE with Nitika Chopra: Feeling your feelings, moving through grief, and living out loud

Julie and Casey sit down with Nitika Chopra (founder of Chronicon) to talk about building a platform and community to celebrate and elevate the lives of chronically ill folks. Along the way, they talk about the medicine of feeling all your feelings (including grief), why “you can fix your problems via your THOUGHTS!” can be abusive, hearing the voice of the divine (whatever that looks like for you), and the revelatory power of Idina Menzel’s voice. TOP TAKEAWAYS Nitika’s journey - from running a beauty and self-love publishing platform to talk show host to community creator for people dealing with chronic illness Nitika saw chronically ill folks as being in the same boat the people of size were years ago: being ignored by the fashion and beauty and fitness industries because they assumed they wouldn’t want or didn’t need products and services built for them. “Oh, you’re sick now. Bye.”  It’s estimated that 133 million people in America have a chronic illness. When it comes to living inside American hustle culture (particularly as a founder), Nitika is “not interested in conforming”.  Just as curvy folks want to be celebrated for who they are RIGHT NOW AS THEY ARE (not for losing weight), the lived experience of chronically ill people deserves to be celebrated in all its fullness.  The mission of Chronicon is not to make a case about the worthiness of chronically ill people or about “fitting in” to a wider culture—it’s about owning and honoring the full experience and the superpowers of chronically ill people. What does it look like not just to survive, but to thrive? What can we learn from the lived experience of chronically ill folks? Perhaps the benefits of what Nitika calls “spiritual surrender”. After spending so much time working and striving to heal her body, she was brought to a point where she finally accepted what WAS and could be truly present. “This is our body, and it is doing the best that it can, and we can love it no matter what. And from THERE, we can live.” Part of the subtle and important difference between that spiritual surrender and feeling like a failure is allowing yourself to grieve. Grief allows us to process the sadness of losing something you wanted without the shame of wanting it in the first place. Spiritual surrender doesn’t mean that you stop striving, learning, fighting, etc. So often, we teach the things we most need to learn (Casey, Julie, and Nitika all have experienced this). For Nitika, teaching self love has helped her to address many, many years of self-hatred. Who gave Nitika permission to fight for herself? God, and her spiritual practice. At 15, at a serious low point, she heard a message that carried her through: “It’s not about you.” So much of “wellness/spirituality/self-help” culture spreads a message of manifesting your way out of your problems—as so many do, Nitika found herself trying to heal herself via belief, and felt like a failure when she didn’t heal. To be clear, this “you can get rid of your problems by repeating mantras and changing your mindset” (and its dark mirror, if you still have problems, it’s because you didn’t believe hard enough) version of “wellness” and “spirituality” perpetuates abuse. We’ve been conditioned by American culture to numb out and avoid feeling our pain, but according to Nitika, “Dealing with our pain, our truth about our pain is one of the greatest medicines in our life. There’s so much wisdom and medicine inside of our pain and suffering. It’s not a place I choose to stay - I don’t want to marinate in it or bring others down by spreading my pain everywhere, but when you give yourself permission to FEEL it, you allow it to be released and to move and take shape and move ON.” Singing feels like home to Nitika. Seeing Idina Menzel in Rent on Broadway was a revelation to her—“Women can SOUND like that?” Her programing was that women should be neat and poised and small and tidy and not “flaunt their spirits”. And NOW, she’s part of the Resistance Revival Choir, and on their debut album! Nitika Chopra is the founder of Chronicon, a media and events company, dedicated to elevating the lives of those living with a chronic illness. Nitika was diagnosed with psoriasis at the age of 10 and psoriatic arthritis at the age of 19 and lived over 17 years of her life being defined by her conditions. Nitika Chopra is a Chronic Illness Advocate and the founder of Chronicon, an inclusive community-building event focused on those living with chronic illness. Her career started over 10 years ago as the founder of a popular online magazine Bella Life, the host of her own talk show on global television, and a brand ambassador for some of the most prestigious beauty brands on the market. However, in the midst of her success, she felt a deep longing for something more. Something she could create that would truly have an impact on the lives of others. After living with severely debilitating psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis for over 30 years, Nitika Chopra found that no matter how hard she tried, she always felt completely isolated and alone. After getting the courage to open up about her health, she realized that every time she met someone who had a chronic illness, they felt the exact same way. And she knew she wanted to create a space to help them feel supported, seen, and part of a community. That passion sparked the idea to create Chronicon. And the New York City event sold out, had 2,000 livestream viewers, and high-level brand sponsors. Now, this platform is expanding with The Chronicon Community, a new, accessible online space with inspiration, advocacy, and empowerment for chronically ill folks across the globe to connect. In this episode, we chat about the biggest lesson she learned from living with chronic health issues for decades—in many cases being bedridden and unable to fully live her life, her journey to becoming an entrepreneur in her 20’s, launching her first business, and nearly 10 years later landing on her brilliant idea for Chronicon, what it looked like to pivot away from brand partnerships as her core source of income to creating an entirely new revenue stream, and why it was initially a bumpy ride for her financially, why she sat with the idea for Chronicon for nearly a year before stepping fully into making it a reality, and all of the incredible, dreamy support and guidance that showed up in her life when she finally did, why she’s the type of person who can only honor and speak her truth, and how that’s been so vital to her playing the long game as an entrepreneur, and so much more!   To learn more about Nitika Chopra and the resources mentioned in this episode, visit the show notes.   Follow Me On: Facebook Instagram

At the age of 10, Nitika Chopra was diagnosed with a debilitating case of psoriasis. By 19, her joints were entirely inflamed and she was further diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. From the tips of her toes to the crown of her head, her body was covered in unsightly sores…and for the first five years of her second diagnosis, she was unable to move without severe pain. While she’s come a long way since then, the first 15 years of diagnosis and life with chronic illness left Nitika overwhelmed with pain, insecurity, and confusion…and also led to depression. But why does she share so openly about these experiences now? Because: she gets it. She resisted self-care at first, and even overdosed on self-improvement (the concept that something was “broken” and needed “fixing”) in her search for self-acceptance and love. And so she made a clear decision: to commit more to her happiness than to her suffering. With baby steps — long baths, lotions, even a little bit of glamour — she began to feel compassion for her condition, as well as for herself. Her perspective shifted from total despair to the deep faith that there was a better way. And she started to realize that she was meant for something much bigger than a life spent in misery. In 2010, her commitment to natural beauty led her to create the online lifestyle magazine Bella Life. A few years after that, she was hosting her own talk show, Naturally Beautiful. She even landed a position as a luxury skincare spokesperson and regular expert on QVC! But something was still missing. In 2019, she launched The Point of Pain podcast and Chronicon — a highly successful one-day event that finally helped her fulfill her life’s purpose: to bring together Spoonies and their allies in real talk about finding that same love and abundance in their lives that she had spent so long seeking. And, as she shares in this interview, the pandemic changed everything. While it was no longer safe to congregate in large groups, she cleverly pivoted Chronicon to an online community. We’ve been working within the community to keep this vital conversation going, while Nitika has been curating amazing content just for us: Spoonies and our loved ones. From events and guest posts to product discounts and giveaways, she has given us a window into what CAN be for this community; with hope, prosperity, and inspiration round every corner. Help us welcome Nitika back to the show! Tune in as Nitika shares: that she didn’t feel comfortable leading conversation about her chronic illnesses until 2017 how she has grown as a patient advocate — and what this role means to her how she understands “toxic positivity” how she pivoted from Chronicon as an in-person event to an online community, as a result of COVID why the Chronicon Community is about meeting you where you are how to join the Chronicon Community how she showcases community members regularly in the Chronicon Community how Chronicon addresses the decolonization of wellness how she views diversity in advocacy what future events in the Chronicon Community are looking like how her morning routine really helps keep her balanced why it’s important to invest in your relationships why — as Toi Derricote says — joy is an act of resistance

It’s Day 10 of the Mentor Masterclass Holiday Challenge. This upcoming year, together, we are going to experience what it feels like when our dreams become our living reality.  I chose today’s challenge so you can stop fighting the monthly ups and downs we experience as women, and instead use them to your advantage for business success AND great health. What you’ll learn today can literally change the way you experience your business - and anything else you decide to take on. Here’s a hint: you’ll have to figure out which part of your moon cycle you’re in right now, so grab your favorite tracking app or calendar. And if this entire concept is new to you, don’t worry - today’s guest mentor Nicole Jardim, women’s hormonal health coach, writer, speaker and professional period fixer, is here to lead the way! Nicole’s work has been featured in MindBodyGreen, Yoganonymous, Female Entrepreneur Association, Bella Life, and many others. She is also my go-to coach whenever I have questions about my body, my hormones, and my monthly cycles. Nicole’s challenge today gives you another important insider’s sneak peek at the transformational tools available in Mentor Masterclass. Plus it gives you a sense of how we take those tools and integrate them into your business and coaching practice as part of the all in life coach training. Tuning into your body’s natural feminine rhythm and cycle is an extremely important part of self-care because it helps you stay tuned-in to your body in general. And as a coach, or soon-to-be coach, you’ll find that you’re most effective (and most intuitive!) when you are fully tuned-in to your body. It’s that place of deep listening (including listening to our bodies) that gives us the nurturing feminine power to serve our clients most effectively and most sincerely. Inside Mentor Masterclass we work with Nicole to completely transform our relationship to our bodies and our monthly cycle, using it as a tool for taking action in our business that’s aligned with the powers of our hormones. In fact, my students in Mentor Masterclass have seen their income increase as much as 45% when I started running the accountability part of the program to synch up with women's cycles. You won’t want to miss this! Listen in here. Happy Challenge, love! How to Play Full-Out 1. Listen to the podcast episode Listen to today’s episode and follow the instructions to do your challenge activity. Each challenge is a fun and easy way to practice what you learn in the episode, while having some holiday fun inside our supportive community of coaches and mentors at the same time. 2. Share & Win Prizes Follow the instructions and then share on Instagram, or Facebook if you do not have an Instagram using the tags #MMHolidayChallenge @mentor.masterclass and @jeannine.yoder.   Tag Nicole, too! She’s @nicolemjardim on Instagram and Facebook. Click here to follow us NOW on our Instagram @jeannine.yoder and @mentor.masterclass. Some podcasts may mention an old Instagram or Twitter page, but this year we’re focused on using Instagram and these pages to track your sharing and to give out prizes. This is also the best place to make sure I personally see what you post.  We’re tracking tags and shares, so the more you play, the more chances you have to win prizes and a potential scholarship to join my signature program Mentor Masterclass. Plus Instagram is one of the best places to engage with like-minded powerful women and start to create a brand as a coach, let’s use this challenge as a way to get you comfortable being seen and to grow your following on social media! 3. Reflect & Renew Take a few minutes to write down the different ways you are of service to others (or how you would like to be of service to others). Let that sink in for a minute. Now let yourself see all of the people that you pay in your life to be of service to you (this could be your garbage man, coffee barista, nanny, your primary care physician or the electric company).   What would it feel like to allow yourself to be paid for the ways you really could add value in service to others?  Earn a Full or Partial Scholarship to Mentor Masterclass If you’d like to be considered for a full or partial scholarship to Mentor Masterclass, download a copy of the Holiday Challenge Reflection & Support Guide (or “workbook”) here.  The workbook contains the reflection questions for podcasts you’ve already listened to during the week, to help reinforce and review what you’ve learned. Simply follow the instructions inside the workbook when you receive it.   The workbook is also your scholarship application. To be considered for the full or partial scholarship, follow the instructions on the workbook information page. Make sure to email your completed workbook between Sunday, December 15 and Wednesday, December 18. (The deadline to enter is 5pm ET on Wednesday, December 18.)   We’ll choose a scholarship winner and announce her name during the Live Call on Tuesday, January 7, 2020. Nitika Chopra is, in her own words, “a woman on a mission to inspire radical self-love.” Her goal is not only to show us how to fall in love with ourselves, but, like her, to “learn to thrive with a chronic illness.” If she’s one thing: she’s real. Nitika shares the raw pain she had to grow through in order to find that self-love she speaks so passionately about. Diagnosed with debilitating psoriasis at 10, she was further diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis – which at that point had taken over most of her body’s joints – at 19. She lived for years with unsightly sores from head to toe, unable to move without severe pain. She lived through, as she tells us in this episode, more than 15 years of pain, insecurity, confusion, and depression. In that darkness, she made a decision: “to be more committed to [her] happiness than [to her] suffering.” By 2010, she’d mastered the concepts of self-love and self-care and founded lifestyle magazine Bella Life; a few years later, her now-glowing skin came center-stage as she became the host of Naturally Beautiful, a talk show that aired on the holistic lifestyle channel Z Living. Most recently, she became a luxury skincare spokesperson and regular expert on QVC. She’s also the host of her own podcast, The Point of Pain, which explores how we can navigate pain in our lives – both literally and figuratively – with grace and heart. This week, she launches perhaps the most heart-centered of her projects to-date: the first annual Chronicon, in partnership with Healthline. For one day in New York City, she and numerous chronic illness advocates and experts will join panels (in an ADA-compliant space!) to talk about life with chronic illness: the good, the bad, and the ugly. She prides herself on being able to truthfully feel the fear – and do it anyway. And do it she does! We are so excited to hold space for this inspirational, real woman – who pulls no punches. Uninvisible Pod crew: meet Nitika! (P.S. We know you’re all wondering – and no, she’s not related to Deepak or Priyanka!)  Tune in as Nitika reveals…  - that she was 10 when she got her psoriasis diagnosis – following a sterile, cold experience being biopsied  - that she was diagnosed with severe psoriatic arthritis at 19  - that she still struggles with inflammation, which inspires self-love conversations with herself constantly  - that she’s on AIP for her health  - that just because she doesn’t have psoriasis all over her body, doesn’t mean she isn’t managing her symptoms daily  - that she spent a lot of time beating herself up with what she calls “toxic positivity”, or the “pink bubble”, in the wellness space – that she followed the prevailing teaching that there was something misaligned in her perspective, and she had to fix it (and that, in essence, her ailments were her fault)  - that she’s passionate about debunking “toxic positivity”  - that her bones began to deform because of her arthritis  - that she is a very spiritual person, and finally came to the conclusion that maybe God also made medicine to help cure her – not just to hurt her  - her wake-up call to medicine: when she couldn’t make it to an audition, and realized that she wasn’t living a full life  - that not everybody needs to take medication – but it really changed her life  - that no amount of green juice would have saved her – she really required medicine  - that in high school, she’d wake up with bloody sheets from the itching in her sleep  - that her ex-husband made her feel that she could trust herself – that her gut was teaching her the right things, and she needed to listen to it  - that she has truly become her own advocate, even though she’s always considered her mom to be her nurse  - that she’s been creating content for 10+ years now, but her health journey was never what she wanted to lead with  - that she’s always been proud of what she’s overcome and been through – but she didn’t want that journey to define her life  - that in 2016, work began to dry up – and by the end of 2017, she had connected to her larger purpose: and realized it was time to talk about the one thing that moves her in a way that nothing else does – her health journey. As such, the world began opening up to her again  - that when she meets someone who’s struggling with their body in ways that she can relate to, nothing moves her more than being able to help that person  - how CurvyCon inspired her  - that Chronicon feels like a place that she’s creating for a LOT of people to finally belong  - how she creates balance in her life – and that she doesn’t manage everything perfectly, but she’s always learning  - how she practices self-love and self-care  - that she’s experienced more adversity as a woman in the medical system than as a woman of color  - that getting divorced was less isolating than being chronically ill  - that she started Chronicon in part to end the shame and isolation associated with chronic illness  - the American Health Council’s projection: that by 2020, 157 million people will have a chronic illness  - that she’s learning so much from attendees and panelists at Chronicon

Hosted by Andrew Quinn and Darren Mooney, and this week with special guests Ethan Shattock and Gerard Rooney from Disconnected Talk, The 250 is a (mostly) weekly trip through some of the best (and worst) movies ever made, as voted for by Internet Movie Database Users. New episodes are released every Saturday at 6pm GMT. This time, continuing our Summer of '99 season, Roberto Benigni's La Vita è Bella. 1999 was a great year for movies, with a host of massively successful (and cult) hits that would define cinema for a next generation: The Matrix, The Blair Witch Project, The Sixth Sense, 10 Things I Hate About You, Fight Club. The Summer of '99 season offers a trip through the year in film on the IMDb's 250. In mid-century Italy, lovable fool Guido embarks on a courtship of the beautiful Dora, a woman far outside of his station. As Italy descends into fascism, Guido hopes that his optimism will allow himself - and his family - to endure in the face of unimaginable evil. At time of recording, it was ranked 26th on the Internet Movie Database's list of the best movies of all-time.

Today on the Podcast, The Knocking on Your Heart. You know when you're at one of those huge conferences and you're meeting all kinds of creative entrepreneurial folks from all kinds of places? You're chatting quickly here and there between speakers. Passing by briefly between bathroom breaks. Wishing you could chat with influencers but find yourself seated with the friends you came with cuz there's barely time to eat and pee — let alone introduce yourself in a non crazy-person way. You feel a weird mix of excitement and dread. There are specific names you want to "connect" with and certain folks you want to avoid. So you're racking and stacking who to prioritize. Maybe you practice your elevator speech on the plane, in the taxi, at your hotel. No doubt you dress to impress and ya come camera ready, costs be damned! If this is you, know this is also about 99.9% of every conference goer on the planet. Even the ones you most look up to have that same twinge of "conference crazy" as I call it. One part nerves, one part thrill, one part pressure. You've put a lot of time, money, and energy into going. It makes sense why you might be thinking, "This HAS to WORK." But oye is that a slippery slope! And then suddenly the weekend's over?! You're flying home, bombarded with a billion BIG ideas, already starting to feel the high coming down and thinking ... "Wait, it's over? I met sooooo many people; why do I feel like I barely talked to anyone." You're looking through your phone and it's all detail shots and flatlays and boomerangs and photo booth groupies. You think, "It looks like I had a great time. Why did I feel so lonely? So spastic? So desperate?" And you're wondering, "How the heck do I make this count?" So, you skim through your pages of notes ... Sift through your stack of acquired business cards, try to put conversations to faces and all those new instagram handles but, honestly, ya kinda got nothin. You're thinking, "Wait, which brand strategist was she?" or "Dannnng, how did they get to lunch with her!?!?" or "Gawwd, I look awful in that shot. Why did they have to tag me?" Before you know it — it's Tuesday morning and you're too tired to reach out like you said you would. But it's OK. You'll do it tomorrow. Gotta update the website first anyway. Then it's 3 weeks later. Website's still wonky. Haven't reached out. But it's OK. You'll sign up for that 8 week course and reconnect in the private FB group. Now you're in the FB group but there's thousands of members and it's a whole lot of white noise, TBH. So you bounce because, after all, it's a giant time suck (and, truthfully, it made you feel pretty anxious. Pretty behind. Pretty not good enough. Pretty exhausted). Ya think, "I gotta get offline. Go somewhere! No one even knows I exist online." Only, you just went somewhere offline. So you say, "No. You can't afford it. That was thousands of dollars. And you're still paying off your Nordstrom's card." So back to DIY marketing hacks you go. Thinking, "Well, if I could just beat the Instagram algorhythm. Maybe I should spend the money on Ads." You do. But still, nothin. Like hitting your head against a brick wall. The doubt seeps in. "Maybe I just need to go get a J-O-B." Then the shame seeps in. Sound familiar? It's a vicious cycle. One every entrepreneur has been on at one time or another. Know you're not alone. You're in the exact right place. Build your business "small but mighty; slow and steady." Now more than ever, when so many women are launching offerings from their laptop (juxtaposed by registering for 1000+ person swaggy conferences with tracked themes or enrolling in monthly online memberships for hundreds of folks at all different stages of business and seasons of life), you need to remember that the BEST businesses  — the ones that thrive creatively, spiritually, emotionally, mentally, physically AND financially — are the ones built on real life, genuine, intimate relationship circles. They are the brain trusts. The collectives. The masterminds. Not only sustainable in business but in life. Because ... Quickie conference chit-chat like, "Oh, hey! So, what'd you think of the panel?" is great but not enough. Loop giveaway partners are smart but not enough. Instagram Lives are fun but not enough. Private Facebook Groups are 24/7 but not enough. What is? Truly investing in others (& they'll invest in you). Giving more than taking. Sharing more than competing. Learning more than preaching. Not with hundreds. Not with thousands. But with a precious few, we hold on. When life hands you a storm you didn't see coming. When success doesn't look how you thought it would. When hustle no longer works and burnout hits ya hard. When pivoting feels essential but starting seems impossible. It's the people you've supported, the ones you've truly gotten to know and serve, who will get you through. Not the room you tried to "work" nor the list you promo-blasted last week. Better yet? They're the ones who'll remind you who you are, what you want, why you started. They're the ones who'll look you, dead in the eyes, call the elephant out in the room, and say, "Sister-friend, what's up? I see you're struggling. What do you need?" They're the ones who roll up their sleeves, offer their resources, and introduce you to the right people, at the right time, in the right way. And that, friends, is how authentic marketing and genuine sales funnels are made. One slow, sincere, surrendered conversation at a time. We draw the circle wide. So come sit by us. Enter my conversation with Nitika Chopra ... Nitika Chopra is a certified life coach, wellness entrepreneur, go-to resource for young women around the globe, and a motivational lifestyle guru.
