High Performance Mindset | Learn from World-Class Leaders, Consultants, Athletes & Coaches about Mindset

Dr. Cindra explores the power of self-discipline and how understanding dopamine can help us build better habits. Sharing her own experience of struggling to finish her book Beyond Grit, she explains how visualizing her audience reignited her motivation. Self-discipline, she says, is the ability to take action even when we don't feel like it—yet our brains are wired for instant gratification, making it difficult to stay on track. To make discipline easier, Dr. Cindra suggests attaching small, immediate rewards to challenging tasks, using habit tracking, and visualizing success to stimulate dopamine release. By training our brains to associate discipline with rewards, we can turn self-discipline into second nature and overcome procrastination for good. Quote of the Week: "We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret." — Jim Rohn

Beyond Grit with Robert Young: Ep. 49 – Ken Newbill, FNP, HTMA-P, Coach | Newbill of Health Ken Newbill was an average American man, living on a common North American diet. He explains how he was clinically obese and never cared much about his health. Then, in his late thirties, he started having health problems. What started as kidney stones eventually turned into a heart attack. As Ken explains, most people are unaware of the fact that the two are related. That life-altering experience placed him in a position to either give up or fight for a new way of life. He decided to fight. Ken studied many alternative medicines and techniques and was able to fine tune his body. He now spends his life helping others do the same. He is an expert at discovering methods of natural healing and ways to enhance the human body for optimal performance. Ken is truly knowledgeable about health and wellness and there is an abundance of valuable information in this episode. You may want to go ahead and grab a pen and paper to take notes. Ken has a background in technology, so he is very technical in his approach towards health and wellness. It is pretty simple, if you put junk in, you get junk out. Unfortunately, most of us are unaware of the toxins entering our bodies throughout the day. Ken sheds light on many areas where we can improve. Clifton Muckenfuss has an interesting story of bouncing back from adversity. Like many of us today, Clifton never felt like he was the type of guy to stay in one place for very long. Directly after high school, he headed to Clemson and was out of the house for the first time in his life. Things got a little rough for the young college student and he found himself in a bit of trouble. Suffice it to say, it was not looking good. Throughout this episode, Clifton takes us on the adventure that has been his life. He has lived in multiple states, pursued multiple career paths, and has always been open to the opportunities in front of him. Clifton went from parking cars to the mortgage business and was essentially forced to transition again during the 2007 mortgage crisis. He responded to that crisis by launching a cleaning company, which he grew to roughly $500k. He later started a construction company with a couple of friends, and with minimal construction experience, they grew that business with over 60% repeat referral business by offering a quality customer experience.   For much of his life, Clifton claims he was chasing many of the wrong things. All of that changed the moment he met the love of his life, who is now his wife. They started to develop a life together, began a family, and focused on building their faith, which is when life truly began to flourish. His unique experiences, combined with his love for coaching and helping others, have led him to his latest endeavor - coaching and consulting. He launched Building Raving Fans to teach others how to run their businesses and how to avoid mistakes he has made throughout in his career. He is also joining WinRate Consulting as part of their coaching team. The road is never clearly paved, there are always bumps along the way. But having self-awareness, the ability to adapt, and being willing to do whatever work is in front of you will make all the difference. Clifton Muckenfuss lives a life Beyond Grit, and we hope you enjoy this episode. #like #rate, #review, and #share with a friend.   @boatsandbourbon www.buildingravingfans.com   Podcast Instagram: Podcast: @beyond_grit_podcast Host: @robert_young_realtor #beyondgritwithRobertYoung

Identity is a tricky thing. Many of us do things our whole lives and we become known for those things – we often take them on as our identities. They are not who we are, they are what we do. But how do we know the difference? Or what happens when that “thing” we do is taken away from us or we are no longer interested in doing it? Who lives underneath it all? Do we like the person within, do we even know the person? Do we allow ourselves the grace to discover what is underneath and accept the person that rises to the surface? This week, Robert explores this topic and more with his guest, Leah Goldstein. Leah is a former CrossFit Games Competitor and CrossFit Gym Owner from Houston, Texas, who possesses multiple bachelor's degrees and now works as a traveling nurse. She and her boyfriend love to travel (van-life style) and explore the outdoors, which is one of the many reasons she loves living in North Carolina. From an early age, she was a naturally gifted athlete and was fortunate enough to be in an area that promoted women's sports. She focused primarily on Volleyball and Power Lifting, which is where she developed the foundations that would help her succeed in the Cross Fit arena. As an adult, Leah transitioned into the leadership role of gym-owner and coach. She and her team competed successfully for several years and loved running the gym. It had its challenges, but was rewarding in many ways. When the sport began to change and expectations of athletes began to shift, she and the other business partners sensed it was time to sell. Leah and her husband at the time went from being grounded in their gym-life identities to being placed in positions of rediscovering who they were individually, who they were as a couple, and what direction they would go from there. They ultimately decided to part ways and after careful consideration, Leah decided to take a job across the country in North Carolina. Life is full of twists and turns, and Leah has adapted to those exceptionally well. The path was often uncertain, but she was always open to the process and willing to adjust as needed. To Leah, it is pretty simple – if you dislike the way your life is going, change it. That is exactly what she did. She is a competitor who has the spirit of a champion, so she is always welcoming new and difficult challenges. Her next big adventure will be the Boston Marathon in 2022!!!  She will be running to support The Cuddy Family Foundation for Veterans (@tcfffv). The Cuddy Family Foundation for Veterans is a nonprofit that works closely with veterans who experience homelessness in Louisiana and beyond. Founder, George Cuddy was previously a guest on this show so make sure you go back and listen to Episode 25 to get a better understanding of their mission. We know many of you would like to donate to Leah's fundraiser, so links are below. Every donation makes a significant impact. Derek Dutton has a remarkably interesting story. From an early age, he knew he wanted to join the military. It was never a question of “if” … the only question was which branch he would choose. He chose the Army, and he dove in headfirst - literally. During a parachute jump, which was later described as a “parachute malfunction,” Derek had a pretty intense situation occur that led him to believe he is “fall-proof.”  Pretty crazy!  Dutton was built for the military and worked his way all the way up to become an Army Ranger. If you do not know what Army Rangers are then shame on you, but for those that may not know, they are the elite bad-assess of the Army. Dutton has served in various places throughout the world, completing two terms in Iraq. Deployment in the middle east takes its toll both mentally and physically. Unfortunately, the physical toll pushed Derek into early retirement and just like that, his military career was over. In this episode, Derek opens about some of his personal struggles with PTSD and some of the difficulties that he faced upon returning home. Many of our brave men and women in uniform return home from combat and are left to fend for themselves, not sure who to turn to, and feeling very isolated and alone. We at Beyond Grit feel it is our responsibility, as a nation, to rally together and support our troops. These heroes put their lives on the line for our freedoms and regardless of our personal beliefs about the war itself, these brave souls deserve to be supported by their fellow citizens.  It has not been an easy road for Derek, but he has learned a lot about himself through this process. One of the most important lessons he has learned is knowing when to ask for help. In addition to his military career, he is an extreme sports enthusiast, marathon runner, and swimmer, a phenomenal writer, and blogger, and he helps others who are living with PTSD. We need more men like Derek Dutton. He has survived what many have not, and he is still fighting today. Please remember that their fight does not end on the battlefield, the battle only begins there. Thank you, Derek, for being on the show and sharing a bit about your life. You exemplify what it means to live a life Beyond Grit, and we honor and salute you.     @rangersmash375

In this episode, Robert and John discuss the path that led John to launch Direct CBD Online.  At age 26, John and his wife were happily married with a baby on the way.  With his new family to feed and his whole life ahead of him, he knew wanted more.  Wiesehan and his business partners bought and built an electronic cigarette brand that ended up in 70,000 retail locations across the country.  You never just “land” in 70k stores, you work to get there.  Launching a brand is not easy, it requires a lot of grit and determination.  The hustle never stops – in 2012, he was on 284 airplanes in just that one year. After growing and selling that business, he wanted to start something new and different.  CBD was on the rise, so he chose to take some risks and ride the wave.  While many companies suffered major losses during the pandemic, fortunately, for Direct CBD Online, e-commerce skyrocketed. His philosophy is “Simplify, Automate, Fail Fast.”  Failure is unavoidable, so when it happens, just learn from it, and move on.  So, the question is, have YOU been considering launching your own business or side hustle? In this special Father's Day Episode of Beyond Grit with Robert Young, Rob has a conversation with his own father, Mr. Dale Young.  Dale Young has been in the window cleaning business for 50 years and knows everything there is to know about the ups and downs of the business world.  Window cleaning is a generational trade for this family of Young men, and the quality of their work is obvious by the amount of time they have remained in business.  You do not usually remain successful in anything for 50 years unless you are doing many things the right way.  It takes more than just a little dose of daily grit to wake in the early morning hours, wash windows in the cold Michigan winters, sticking your arms down into freezing cold water buckets, climbing those cold ladders, and delivering quality work every single day, year after year.  Grit also seems to be generational for these family men, as we even get to hear a small piece of Rob's own story of his breakaway from the family business and how tough that decision truly was for him at 19 years old.  Rob and his dad discuss the challenges that have come along with being a working father and trying to run the family business, especially when it takes you all the way from Michigan to Florida.  We get to hear how different it was for fathers back in those days compared to now and we have the honor of receiving many nuggets of sound wisdom from this hard-working family man.  Robert speaks on the value of watching his father over the years and learning how to be a man through observing his father's actions. It was the tough lessons his father taught him that made lasting impressions because those made him a better man today. One of his dad's best pieces of advice to him was, “Just do the work.” We hope you have a laugh with these two as they reminisce about the old days and talk about things still to come.  We hope you enjoy the show. Happy Father's Day!

Her clients include Target, Verizon, and Walmart.   She’s the best-selling author of the book “Beyond Grit” and she’s the founder of Mentally Strong Consulting.  In this episode of the Sports Life Podcast, we talk about how Cindra managed to pull together 21 interviews with mindset coaches who work with pro athletes and Olympians across the country.  Her “High-Performance Mindset Summit” gets them talking about managing emotions and balancing your life in the uncertainty of Covid-19.   And the best part is that she is offering these interviews for free.  We also talk about a moment when the Vikings’ Adam Thielen used one of her mental tricks on the field and her work with pro-runner Gabriele Grunewald who passed away last summer from cancer.   This is another conversation that’s great for parents and kids to listen to together.  You can learn more about Cindra and access her summit at https://www.cindrakamphoff.com/

The world's best are gritty. The world's best are clear on their purpose. The world's best become a master of their thoughts. The world's best know themselves to master yourself. The world's best dominate the controllables. The world's best own the moment. The world's best choose empowering emotions. The world's best own who they are. The world's best live and let go. The world's best choose their courage zone.   In her more than sixteen years coaching elite runners, Olympians, championship teams, executives, and entrepreneurs, world renowned performance psychologist Dr. Cindra Kamphoff has discovered these ten practices to be consistent among the world’s very best.   In her book, Beyond Grit: Ten Powerful Practices to Gain the High-Performance Edge, Dr. Kamphoff explains why each of these practices is important to discovering your purpose, “owning your why,” and boosting your performance through drive and grit, which Dr. Kamphoff argues prove more important than talent.   Dr. Kamphoff is the Director and Founder of the Center of Sport and Performance Psychology, founder of the High Performance Mindset Podcast, a professor in Performance Psychology at Minnesota State University, and a longtime marathoner.   Today Dr. Kamphoff will share with us a little about those 10 practices, and how we can develop them to achieve stronger, more confident running.   Questions Dr. Kamphoff is asked: 4:01 What sparked your passion for running and how did that turn into a career in  Performance Psychology? 6:19 What inspired you to write your book Beyond Grit? 10:14 What are the 10 Practices you discuss in your book? 17:14 Which of the 10 Practices have you had to work on the most? 19:22 How can runners benefit from knowing their own strengths and weaknesses and how can they identify them? 24:02 Why is “Grit” more powerful than “Gift”? 28:04 How can people keep their ‘Why” centered in their lives? 33:26 How did your experience at the 2013 Boston Marathon reinforce your “Why” and how did it change your approach to coaching? 39:16 How does your Beyond Grit workshop help people gain confidence and push past  their comfort zone? 41:37 What else is in the works for you?   Quotes by Dr. Kamphoff: “Grit really means staying passionate and persistent for your very long term goals.” “Self-awareness is foundational to high performance, and it’s foundational to you being at your best consistently.” “If you ‘think’ it, that’s not going to be as intentional, but if you ‘ink’ it, that’s really key.” “I really like this quote by Simon [Sinek] - he said, ‘Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress, but working hard for something we love is called passion.’”   Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? Wouldn't it be nice if you could master your mind and your emotions? Not only would it help with your running performance, but having mental toughness is something that can help in the rest of our lives too. Mental training is not something we are born good at, and actually, our minds are not wired to be happy, but we can develop mental strategies that work for us. Having awareness of your mental state as a runner, can help you to talk yourself through struggles, and get through the tough moments. I met Cindra in 2012, and she was one of those people you meet every so often who defines a changing point in your life. I never thought we would speak again, but here we are. Cindra may love the field of psychology, but she loves being a runner more, which makes it really easy to relate to her, as she really understands how we think as runners. We know the mental side of running is so important to racing well, if you want to make positive self talk a focus—this is the episode for you. Today's Guest Cindra Kamphoff High performance coach and sports psychologist Cindra Kamphoff gives us advice on building mental toughness and getting out of your comfort zone. What You Will Learn About How to stop getting in your own way Why mastering your mind and emotions will help with performance How your difficulties fuel you every day to achieve your goals What your MVP level is and how you can get there Why I can, I am, I will statements are so powerful Why repeating a mantra over and over again will help you in a moment of struggle. How to focus on what we can control, rather than what we can't Inspirational Quotes You never know the impact that you are making, and you might not even know it for years down the road. Difficulties happen for you not to you. One of the main goals of mental training is to increase your awareness of yourself, and what are your tendencies. Our brain is not made for us to be happy, it doesn't operate like that, it doesn't operate in a way that helps us perform at our best, so we really have to master our brain and our emotions. You need to know yourself to master yourself. We all have automatic negative thinking, but you don’t have to believe everything that you think. Changing your state and physiology will impact how you feel.  If you are not embracing your discomfort, you are not really reaching your best and your potential. You can let the weather provide you an excuse or you can change your perception of the weather, and see that you can still do it.
