After 35 years, McBride & the Ride is still one of the most beloved country music groups. Their first three albums — Burnin' Up the Road, the gold-certified Sacred Ground, and Hurry Sundown, released in 1991, 1992, and 1993 are still full of timeless country music. These albums also produced several hits on the Billboard country charts, including the Top 5 hits Sacred Ground, Going Out of My Mind, Just One Night, and Love on the Loose, Heart on the Run. Terry McBride has had quite a fruitful career, writing major hits for Brooks & Dunn, Reba McEntire, Cody Johnson and others. He toured with Brooks & Dunn through most of their biggest years playing bass and writing songs. Ray Herndon has been Lyle Lovett's lead guitarist since 1985 and has had songs cut by Kenny Chesney, Lee Greenwood, Linda Davis and more. Billy Thomas moved to Nashville from Los Angeles in 1987 and immediately started working with Vince Gill along with many other country stars (Emmylou Harris, Patty Loveless, Steve Wariner & Earl Scruggs). He's been Vince's drummer on the road and in the studio ever since, adding background vocals to his many hits. But I'm very excited and I'm trying to keep from Going Out of My Mind, so let's welcome the smoothest harmonies in country and celebrating their 35th anniversary, the one and the only McBride and the Ride to the show! #mcbrideandtheride #sacredground #amarillo #countrymusic #countrymusicradio #countryradio #newmusic #newalbum #newrelease #music #guitar #bassguitar #drums #musictrio

Legends celebrates Billy Thomas, incredible drummer of McBride and The Ride with the debut of their new EP Amarillo Sky. Billy was the drummer for The Hudson Brothers Band, then with Ricky Nelson. Next, he played behind the one and only Mac Davis for his shows in Vegas. Mac Davis was Billy's first taste of Urban Country. The Cinderella story continued. After moving to Nashville in 1987, he got his first job within the first few days after auditioning with Vince Gill. And then he performed on Emily Lou Harris' album Blue, followed by work with Marty Stuart. Hear Billy's inside story on Tony Brown, the kingpin for MCA Records, his music producer, and former pianist for Elvis. Tony brought Terry McBride and Ray Herdon together for the three part harmony of McBride and The Ride. They produced five albums from 1989 through 1995. And the rest is history for this SINGING DRUMMER. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.
Terry McBride is the incredibly talented singer and songwriter of McBride & The Ride. Now celebrating their 35th anniversary, they are debuting their newest EP Amarillo Sky. McBride & The Ride shot to the top of the charts with hits such as Love on the Loose, Heart on the Run, Sacred Ground and Going Out of My Mind. Hear about Terry's early beginnings in Taylor, Texas and years with his beloved Dad. Terry auditioned for his Dad's band as a bass player and made the cut. He learned to drive the band bus and "double clutch." Great music is in Terry's DNA. His experience in Austin included time with Leroy Parnell and Delbert McClinton with good friend Larry Telford. Listen to Terry's story about the famous rejection letter from Tony Brown. Eventually, Tony put Terry together with Ray Herndon and Billy Thomas. That's Tony Brown, the pianist for Elvis! The #1 way you can support our podcast is by visiting our Patreon page! We're also excited to say that we are now an affiliate for Sweetwater. So, the next time you need any new strings, picks, microphones, recording gear, etc. make sure to use this link! Today is Sunday, March 5th, 2023 and it's a big day here on The Troubadour! This episode unofficially marks the beginning of our 6th season of The Troubadour Podcast! And I've got to give some credit where it's due. If Carly Evans hadn't agreed to join me on this little idea of mine, after I struggled through that first season of about a dozen episodes on my own, I can tell you with 100% confidence, The Troubadour would have never made it this far. So a huge shout out to my wonderful co-host and friend, Carly! There's another reason why today's episode is so special. Back in the 1990s when I was spending lots of time in the cab of a tractor or swather during my teens, songs from today's guests were in regular rotation on the local FM station. As you'll hear on the show today, the band McBride & The Ride was formed in 1989 as a brain-child of Nashville record producer Tony Brown. Tony was aware of individual talent he saw in Terry McBride, Ray Herndon and Billy Thomas and brought them together and the band was formed. After a good run together, which included 5 top 5 singles back then, the group eventually went their separate ways but all remained active musicians, playing and writing for some of the best artists in country music. But now in 2023, the band is back at it, releasing new music and touring as a group again. Carly and I couldn't be more thrilled to have them as guests on today's show. If you'll recall, Terry was our guest on Episode #100, and to have the entire group here on today's show was simply a thrill. Within the show notes for today's episode, you can check out the YouTube link for their new single “Marlboros and Avon” complete with their signature and unforgettable harmonies. This interview was certainly a pleasure to be a part of and I can't wait to catch the band live sometime soon. For you Texas listeners, McBride & The Ride will be playing at the Kenney Store in Kenney, TX on April 28th , and they'll be at The Texan Theatre in Cleveland, TX on April 29th. For my Kansas brethren, they'll be playing at Knuckleads in Kansas City on June 1st. So let's get to it! Here comes Episode #169 and our visit with Terry McBride, Ray Herndon and Billy Thomas of McBride & The Ride. CALLING ALL HEARTS ACOUSTIC AT THE CASTLE
We had a great time on the Podcast with Terry, Ray and Billy of the iconic group McBride & The Ride...When they first began releasing music in 1989, McBride & The Ride released three acclaimed albums Burnin' Up The Road, Sacred Ground, and Hurry Sundown, with hit singles like "Love on the Loose, Heart on the Run," “Sacred Ground,” "Going Out of My Mind," and many more. In the spring of 2021, they announced they were reuniting and going back in the studio to record new music. Though the band has been on and off over the past 30 years, its members have thrived through their individual careers. Ray Herndon has been Lyle Lovett's lead guitarist since 1985 and has had songs cut by Kenny Chesney, Aaron Tippin, Lee Greenwood, Linda Davis and more, he continues to operate his family's historic club, Handlebar J, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Terry McBride has had quite a fruitful career, writing major hits for Brooks & Dunn, Reba McEntire, Easton Corbin, Cody Johnson and more. He toured with Brooks & Dunn through most of their biggest years playing bass and writing songs. Billy Thomas moved to Nashville from Los Angeles in 1987 and immediately started working with Vince Gill along with many other country stars including Emmylou Harris, Patty Loveless, Steve Warner & Earl Scruggs. He's been Gill's drummer on the road and in the studio ever since, adding background vocals to his many hits, as well as joining him as a member of The Time Jumpers, one of Nashville's favorite bands. The trio's upcoming EP, Marlboros & Avon, produced by all three members, is set to release in 2023, their first offering of original music in nearly 30 years. This one will give our local listeners chills. We have been wanting to do this episode for quite some time. We have South Tahoe High School legend & state champion Jerod Haase on the show today. This is our first local born guest on the show today and it did NOT disappoint! Jerod Haase starred at South Tahoe High School where he played for coach Tom Orlich. They won the state championship together his senior year in 1992 where they beat a great Western High School team led by Prince Fowler. To this day it is recognized as one of the greatest state championship victories ever by a Northern team. Haase went on to play one season at Cal on a team led by Jason Kidd & Lamond Murray before transferring to Kansas. He led the team in scoring his first season on a team that featured a roster of future NBA players Raef Lafrentz, Jacque Vaughn, Greg Ostertag, Scot Pollard and Billy Thomas. Haase is also the author of the book Floor Burns, and is the current coach of the Stanford Men’s Basketball team. We are honored to learn all about his hoops journey and hear great stories about South Tahoe’s title run, his college career, Roy Williams, Tom Orlich, experience playing prefessionally overseas, Floor Burns, Stanford Basketball and MUCH more. It was a pleasure hanging out with Coach Haase and we can’t thank him enough for his time. He was truly one of the most passionate and hardest working players this area has ever seen, and we love that his passion has carried over to the sidelines not only in basketball, but also in education and life. This was an honor and we know you’ll appreciate this one too. Thanks Coach Haase!
