Welcome back to The DC Beer Show, your hub for all things craft beer across DC, Maryland, and Virginia! This episode, we welcome Tasha Dixon from Ardent Craft Ales in Richmond, Virginia, for a lively conversation packed with brewing insights, local flavor, and community celebrations. The show kicks off with the crew sharing what's in their glasses—expect shout-outs to Trillium's foeder-aged lager, Ardent's Bohemian Pilsner and IPA 14, and a juicy Kolsch from Bearchase. Tasha dives into Ardent's brewing philosophy, revealing the story behind their flagship IPA 14 (it's all about that 14th, all-Citra batch!) and the magic of scaling up their canning operations with a lean, cross-trained team. If you've ever wondered what it takes to juggle 12- and 16-ounce cans or wrangle small-batch innovation into a flagship core lineup, this behind-the-scenes peek is for you!Get ready for some hop talk as Tasha explains the role of Yakima Chief's Cryo Pop hops in Ardent's vibrant “Pop!” pale ale, and dishes on tweaking recipes for maximum aroma on a budget. The episode takes a fun detour into cannabis-inspired brewing, with Tasha describing her forays into terpene beers—think Pineapple Express and Winner Winner. While there's no THC or CBD involved (yet, Virginia law!), these botanic brews deliver big “wow” factor and bring curious crowds into the taproom. The conversation also digs into the resilience and evolution of the Richmond beer scene. Tasha speaks candidly about recent brewery closures in the area, the pressures of leases, and the importance of community support—plus what makes Richmond's Scott's Addition neighborhood such a vibrant, collaborative hotspot for breweries, cideries, and distilleries. With Pride Month upon us, Tasha shares how Ardent and their Scotts Addition neighbors are teaming up for a Pride Bar Crawl, with special releases (including a berry seltzer called “Berry Proud”), passports, and proceeds benefiting Richmond Habitat for Humanity's Pride Build. Expect plenty of events throughout June and again for Virginia Pride in September, all designed to foster inclusion and celebration across the community. As always, our hosts shout out coming events in DC and the broader DMV, including Womxn's Brew Culture Club meetups at Denizens, a members-only beer share at Sovereign, and the Wheatland Spring Land Beer Fest (hello, Tre Fontane!). They also salute longtime Richmond beer fans—special birthday cheers to Frank Chang!—and encourage everyone to experience Richmond's hospitality, food, and ever-evolving beer scene. The episode wraps up with a heartfelt toast to closed and closing breweries, the promise of more openings ahead, and the enduring truth: Beer always helps. So grab your favorite brew and join us for another round with The DC Beer Show—where the spirit of craft, community, and creativity never stops flowing! For our last episode of 2023, I have an interview with Anne Quinn Corr, long-time food writer for the Centre Daily Times, and author of Seasons of Central Pennsylvania, a beloved cookbook. And of course, you know me: I had to try cooking some of the recipes. (I forgot to thank the members of the "Foodies of State College" Facebook group for their help in connecting me to Ms. Corr; greatly appreciated!) Then come along as my wife and I have our anniversary dinner at the Allen Street Grill in State College, and to the 27th anniversary celebration at Selin's Grove Brewing and the 16th anniversary at Elk Creek Café & Aleworks. I'll sample Boal City Brewing's Bohemian Pilsner and a Keystone State favorite, Pennsylvania Dutch Egg Nog. (By the way; made a small mistake there. Chas. Jacquin et Cie, the Philadelphia distillery, was founded in 1884, not in the 1840s.)  One more thing: a late-breaking Boilo-making tip, just in time for New Year's!   Enjoy! Regan Long of Local Brewing Company of San Francisco joins Harry Duke and Mark Carpenter today on Brew Ha Ha. They are celebrating their 7th anniversary in June. They are a 10-barrel brewery, they do about 20 kegs per batch. Since Covid they are packaging a lot of beer in cans too. Regan Long studied Physics and Astronomy and had an interesting career as a scientist in Oceanography and Engineering and tells the story of becoming a brewer. Mark Carpenter adds that a science background is ideal for going into brewing. Regan Long also taught Oceanography at San Francisco State, and did some scientific and business consulting across a wide variety of industries. They are known for a lot of their lager beers. Their Black Lager was their first award winning beer. They called it Bluxome Black from the street where they are located. They have won a handful of awards for this one. Mark Carpenter is opening a Pilsner now. The first one they tasted is Vacation which is flavored with a particular strain of yeast that has a bit of pineapple notes. It is a 100% Pilsner malt. It is a flagship for them, and a unique beer. It is “bright and snappy, and nice in warm weather.” It is a yeast strain that a lot of brewers don't want to work with because it takes 21 days at a relatively high temperature. They are also making a new beer that they are making for the Giants' stadium (Oracle Park) where they have a concession, at Gotham Club. They are only distributed locally, in the Bay Area. It was their choice to “slow roll that model…” as they develop the brand in their chosen home market. During the Covid pandemic they did a lot of canning, including using different artists for their can labels. They do not have one standard look except for all having an innovative and modern vibe with Californian iconography. Their Pilsner that uses the Australian hops is a classic Pils that Mark Carpenter says has wonderful flavor. It is a Bohemian Pilsner malt with an Australian hop that plays different in a low-alcohol pilsner malt. Mark says that the lower alcohol, 4.0 percent, which means you can drink more of it.

Episode 195: East Brother's Paul Liszewski Has a License Plate that Says “LAGER”

Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine Podcast

East Brother Beer in Richmond, California, makes its living by nailing classic styles, including an oatmeal stout in the core range. Naturally they also brew IPA—Gold or Red, take your pick—but their top two sellers are Bo Pils and Red Lager. Their seasonal lager series includes a maibock, Baltic porter, pre-Prohibition lager, and festbier—no wonder head brewer Paul Liszewski's customized California license plate says “LAGER.” While its sneakily hop-forward yet balanced Bo Pils is beloved by local drinkers, it also gets respect from peers—including a Great American Beer Festival silver medal in 2019. Chris Coomber and Rob Lightner founded East Brother in 2016; Liszewski joined up in 2017. He says that Bo Pils is still essentially the homebrew recipe that Coomber perfected in his own kitchen—any changes since then have mainly been process tweaks and fine-tuning. (For more about brewing that beer, see Liszewski's Brewer's Perspective (https://beerandbrewing.com/brewers-perspective-brewing-bo-pils-with-east-brother/).) In this episode, Liszewski digs further into the brewery's lager program and its approach to brewing consistent crowd-pleasers. Among other topics, he goes deep on Bo Pils—which accounts for about 40 percent of the brewery's production—as well as Pre-Prohibition Lager, whose classic recipe includes six-row craft malt from Admiral Maltings in Alameda, California, in conjunction with flaked maize. As with the Bo Pils, they didn't forget the hops—it gets a helthy portion of Cluster to the tune of 38 IBUs. Tune in for lager talk and much more. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): Born in the Pacific Northwest from a lot of hard work and singular goal, G&D has become the best damn chiller company in the world. Rob Lightner from East Brother Beer Co. joins Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras today on Brew Ha Ha. Mark Carpenter is away this week. East Brother Brewing Co. is named after an island in San Francisco Bay called East Brother Island, near their home city of Richmond, California. They are located in the old shipyards where they built 747 ships during WWII. Rob Lightner and his friend Chris Coomber founded the brewery three years ago. They are also neighbors in Richmond. The brewery has a tap room in Richmond, near where the old Pixar offices were. They have food trucks that come to the tap room. For entertainment and competition they have darts, bocce and ping-pong. Rob is glad that people come there to play and talk with each other, not to stare at their own phones the whole time. Their beer styles are simple, with five core beers: a Bohemian Pilsner, a Lager, the Oatmeal Stout, and two IPAs. They also do a few others in rotation. They are distributed in kegs and cans all around the Bay Area.

Sometimes making a great beer is easier than coming up with a label that doesn't come under pressure of legal action. It's a hard life as a brewer trying to keep yourself alive, much less create the next beer style breakthru, but as they say, the show must go on. Known for some of the best beers on Portland's West side, Sasquatch Brewing has done it again. With a Bohemian Pilsner that is sure to make you want to sing a rhapsody, there are plenty of other beers and ciders in ther line-up that will make you want to break free. Ryan gets lost in Trap Door sauce, Bronwyn has a waffle crisp that was made in heaven, John John gets Sports Happy, and Damian has a Belgian Sour that will make you want to spread your wings. We will rock you with beer so good you'll want it all on this episode of Brew Happy!

The end of the 2018-2019 Premier League season is upon us. We celebrate not only a fun season but our three year anniversary of starting the podcast. After watching the trophy get lifted, we jumped into the studio to reflect on all that this wonderful season had given us. During the show, we also look at how bad or accurate some of our predictions were, and sum up our favorite moments of the season. We had FOUR beers to review for this show. (I apologize in advance). It was a wide variety of styles starting with a farmhouse Imperial Stout called Black Metal by Jester King Brewing, the Schevchenko 9 Euro Dark Lager from Four Fathers Brewing, a Bohemian Pilsner from Patagonia, and a Bourbon Barrel aged limited release of Polygamy Porter from Wasatch Brewing. Thanks for listening and joining us these past three years. Cheers! - Love the beer, cherish the game. Camino Brewing was born during a journey the co-founders (Nathan Poulos and Allen Korenstein) took down the Camino de Santiago.  The Camino used to be a pilgrimage for religious types, but today people from all walks of life take the trip.  Some to clear their head or find themselves, others just want to get away from the rat race for a while. Poulos joins us this week to talk about that journey and how it inspired opening his brewery and continues to inspire him today.  He met a lot of strangers that became friends on the trip, and he wants Camino Brewing to offer that same connection. Beers like N 120 Bohemian Pilsner and KM 0.0 West Coast IPA take their names from the Camino, while other offerings like Auld Lang Syne Brut IPA say goodbye to the past and welcome the future.  Poulos has big plans in 2019 with each season offering beers that celebrate a leg of the journey on the Camino de Santiago. We also talk a bit of college football here as the National Championship game comes to the Bay Area.  Alabama will take on Clemson for the third time in four years.  Our Georgia Bulldogs broke the combo last year when they played Alabama for the title but fell to the Crimson Tide.
