Warmup:Your D&D Group of 5 is suddenly and permanently moving to a D&D group of 4. Your players love having 5 characters. You get to now create a character that is actually your character. Intro:Welcome back to How to Be a Better DM. I'm your host, Justin Lewis, here with my cohort, Tanner Weyland. Together, we're here to help you learn how to craft better stories for your players as you play D&D. Today, we're going to talk about a big challenge today: how to engage players in D&D who don't seem to be engaged. Before we get to today's topic let's go through some housekeeping items. Main topic:JustinReality check. At some point (whether before or after trying any of these tips), you will have to come to grips with the fact that maybe your player doesn't actually want to play D&D. They might be playing just to make you happy or they are giving it a try and they don't really grasp it yet (or it isn't their thing). So when you get to a point when you don't know how to engage an unengaged player, ask them if they really want to play. Chances are, D&D isn't for them. Flank your players Your unengaged player is not just an unengaged person. No matter what you think, there is something in life that does engage them. So with this step, examine your player. Think about what they like to do in their free time. Think about what you might find them doing when they don't have any responsibility and can do whatever they want. If you can't think of anything, then ask them. Learn about your players. Something in what they choose to spend their free time on will trigger an idea. Let's think of a few possibilities. T.V.: Most people, when asked what they do in their spare time, will say they watch a handful of shows. This is golden material for you. Ask them what shows they like to watch and then go research those shows. Try and dissect what those shows bring to the table. Video Games: A lot of people will also say video games. This is also golden material because not all games are the same. You get different things from playing Halo Infinite than you do Elden Ring. So ask them what games they play mostly. Then try and incorporate some of that game into the campaign. Social Media: Many people might say they spend a lot of time scrolling the feeds of social media. Excellent. Ask them about that or even follow them and do some research. You might be noticing a pattern. You see, everyone has things that they like. Your job is to figure out what your players like and then add that to the game. Bonus: After you get good at that, you can then start to anticipate what they *probably* will like. That is when the game gets even more exciting. Shorter Sessions TannerSide Arc: If your players are having a hard time connecting, do a side arc! Kind of like a bottle episode, but longer. Using what you learned about their favorite shows/games//genres, create a side arc that puts their character into an interesting situation. Just remember that you want them to have high control of the new arc—otherwise, they will be disconnected from the experience. The real joy of a side arc is that the players can have a real effect on the world. When it is the main campaign, DMs have to be careful with how much creative control. With side arcs, you can be more free with player control. Examples: Have them create a store, restaurant, or other business, and have them participate in a business rivalry. Have them wake up in a Squid Game style death game run by some noble. Make a boat journey where they run the boat. Intermission:Now that player came back. You have to get rid of your character that love. How do you do it? Main Topic Cont:JustinSecrets One way to help your unengaged player re-engage is to involve them in a conspiracy. Well, it's not actually that insidious, but you get the idea. Everyone loves a juicy secret. While you are at the table try incorporating whispers to a singular...
In this episode of Finding Common Battle Grounds, we discuss the claims that Amazon's new series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, is too woke. We return to our traditional format this time and each poses the other three questions, trying to find common ground. We agree from the outset that the "wokeness" claims center on gender (powerful female leads) and race (a racially diverse cast). We don't agree on Josh's question that "woke scolds" ruin everything. We also agree that Tolkien wrote race into his universe and that, as a product of the late 19th century and early 20th century, the racial hierarchy in his universe is a reflection of the time in which he lived. Josh then argues that the racially diverse cast raised issues of continuity for him with the Peter Jackson movies, though he frames the question as, "Is it ever okay to kill all the people who have a common skin color?" to be a bit more provocative (just a bit!). We don't find agreement on this point as Ryan argues that, once Amazon bought the rights to this, they did not have to stay true to Peter Jackson's vision. (We do all agree that the meme is funny.) We all agree that the producers and directors behind The Rings of Power intentionally cast people who are racially diverse for the show - though, of course, we don't know their actual intentions, but it seems pretty obvious. We then get bogged down into a discussion of whether there are Tolkien fans who like the show. Finally, Josh argues that the producers of The Rings of Power pushed so hard to be "woke" (i.e., to have empowered women and a racially diverse cast) that the rest of the story suffered. We don't agree on this point. Tom provides a summary statement that we do agree on: Amazon is conducting a test to see whether a racially diverse cast and strong female leads will be attractive enough to people that it will make them money. We'll get to see whether the experiment works based on how well The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power does. BONUS: After we wrap up the main content, we then get into a very long discussion about racism. Ryan argues that this episode is a great illustration of how he cannot challenge racial perspectives: He cannot call something Josh says "racist" as that is the equivalent of calling him a member of the KKK, but he also cannot imply (even if he isn't implying it) that something Josh says is racist as that also results in Josh inferring that Ryan thinks he's a racist. It's a lose-lose proposition for Ryan because any challenges to Josh's arguments are immediately interpreted by Josh as though he is a racist, and we all agree that "racist" is the 2020's equivalent of calling someone a Nazi or communist or pedophile. We don't resolve this issue and instead request insights from our listeners.

In this episode we discuss: Where God is in the midst of our pain and trials. That doubt can be part of healthy faith. The steps to take when you're in a dark season of life. Favorite quotes- I'm hoping to give other people in the faith permission to tell the truth, not to deny the doubts. Even at times, embrace them. But don't run away from God when you have them run to Him and let Him comfort you in the middle of it. When you wrestle you don't run away from God. You continue to embrace Him and press into Him. That's where you build real trust and real faith. Not in the mountaintops - you enjoy God in the mountaintops, but you get to know him in the valleys. There are great people of faith, that we look up to in the Bible, that doubted God. That lamented and cried out to God. That screamed out to God and didn't understand. Yet they were very close to God. Our faith shouldn't be in the perfect desired result of God delivering what we want. As we really, really mature, our faith is in Him. If we want his power and He gives us grace it's because His grace is sufficient and it's what we need. Ultimately our faith isn't based on getting what we want from God or in life. Our faith has to be in his character, his goodness, his nature, his grace. Our faith is in him. That he is good and his way is perfect. Why boundaries in our lives are so needed Favorite quotes- 1. Often times we think our ending is the end, but that's when we need to put a comma and we can sit down or stand up. I'm just really thankful in the moment that I stood up. 2. When we show up for one another, the world can change and that's why Noonday exists because women showed up for one another. 3. You matter. Your life is not small and when you own your voice you get to use your influence and your influence is meant not just for your sister down the street but for your sister around the globe. 4. Faith is being able to move forward and not know what the outcome is but know who holds the outcome. 5. I am not going to plan to fall because you know what, we don't have to plan to fall. If there are any guarantees in life, it's that you are going to fall. Instead, I'm just gonna step off the cliff and fly. In this episode we discuss: Why and how to make a list of core boundaries for your everyday life. Is there a difference between happiness and being joyful as a Christian? How to consult with God about what to do every day. Practical tools to help you give up control daily. Favorite quotes- Scientifically we were made to be happy and by our creator, we are created for happiness God empowered us to do more, so I was like, "Lord what does it look like for me to let go of what I am not supposed to be hanging on to, to hang on tighter to those things you have really called me to do, and find this inner peace I once had in you, Lord that I forgot was even possible." Because I am a list maker I use to put God at the top of the list which sounds like a neat thing to do because I would do my little quiet time and put an X in the box but then what I saw happening was God became an item on my todo list instead of him being involved in all areas of my life, what I have been trying to do is instead of making him an item on the list, I am asking for His instead of giving him mine. I'm with the hilarious Melanie Shankle today talking about writing, blogging, fashion, and finding joy in the small things In this episode we discuss: Her Summer go-to outfit The real story of the early days of blogging The power of the small things in our lives Favorite quotes- Mother Teresa said, “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.” I think that's where you look and go that's my legacy. I feel like Church of the Small Things was my journey of God bringing me back around to know you are exactly where you are, doing exactly what I want you to do and if I'm calling you to something bigger you're gonna know that, but for today I want you to do what's right in front of you. It's trusting that none of us have a small life because God is using every bit of it. That's why He put us here and that's why He put us where we are. Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business. In this episode, I answer these questions- 1. What is your go-to coping mechanism when you feel overwhelmed? (44:21) 2. Do your non-Christian family members question what you are doing with your life and how do you answer? (48:22) 3. I'm with the brilliant Jenni Catron today talking about Enneagram types, how to best love and understand those around us, the phenomenal program we are doing together and the truth about the secret to success! In this episode we discuss: A brief overview of each Enneagram profile The Women in Leadership Coaching Intensive How self-development and personal leadership are key to success Favorite quotes- There are different images of God that we reflect as part of our personality. Every type has to be aware of when this goes to the unhealthy side. There's beauty and there's great things about each type but anything overused and misused can actually be a detriment rather than a strength. Lead yourself well to lead others better. The hardest person you'll lead is yourself. One of the secrets of success is surrounding yourself in a healthy community. I love leadership I love helping people understand that sphere of influence you've been given, and how do you steward that well. Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business. In this episode, I answer these questions- I learned so much about the importance of self-talk in Fierce Faith. I loved the whole book and it literally changed my life. There's one thing I still need more help with, I can't seem to break the habit on negative self-talk. Any advice (47:39) Sometimes I feel like I can hear God very clearly and sometimes I don't feel like a hear from him at all. I get panicked when I can't hear him and wonder if it's because he is upset with me. Is this normal? (51:53) I keep bumping up against struggles in my business. I'm with the amazing Kim Walker-Smith today talking about her work with Jesus Culture, her new solo album “On My Side”, and what it's really like to balance family and ministry. In this episode we discuss: Juggling kids and life while also pursuing God's calling How Jesus Culture began Her new solo album, “On My Side.” Kim's childhood dream Favorite quotes- Becoming a mother was both glorious and the most terrifying thing of my life. I'm definitely a visionary, I make plans all day long. I love that but when you are making the Lord your focus and fixing your eyes on Him, He guides your steps and leads you to where you are supposed to be in His perfect timing. I just fixed my eyes on Jesus and I was pursuing Him. I wasn't pursuing a job or a role or a position, I was just pursuing Him and He led me. These songs reflect the deep work the Lord was doing in me in that season. Now out on tour…the Lord is doing something deep inside of people's hearts through the songs and through the moments of worship. Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business. In this episode, I answer these questions- How can I motivate myself to make changes in my life? I'm with my fantastic friend Alexa Schirm from Simple Roots Wellness today talking about how to eat healthy without it stealing our joy, how to get our bodies to burn fat and not just sugar, balancing our hormones, and what the deal is with intermittent fasting. In this episode we discuss: How to eat healthy and not make ourselves miserable in the process How to make your body burn fat instead of just sugar How to change your food cravings Why is everyone drinking bone broth and what's the real deal with intermittent fasting How to balance your hormones Favorite quotes- If you can change your fuel source, then you can change your cravings. As long as you continue to try to do something you don't enjoy, you obviously will never do it. I am on a mission to end the confusion, because there is so much confusion and overwhelm in the health world. So how can we just break it down and actually figure out ways to make this realistic in your life so you will do it? I like to get out of the all-or-nothing mindset because there is a lot of triggers when it comes to that and a lot of people trigger past and previous trauma with food. Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business. In this episode, I answer these questions- 1. Do you sleep? Seriously! How do you get so much done? I'm with my friend, Jeannie Cunnion today talking about parenting, living a grace-filled life, and what it means to live set free In this episode we discuss: 1. Parenting from a place of surrender 2. God's grace 3. The most powerful tool in a parent's toolbox. Favorite quotes: 1. The beauty of praying for them [our kids] is that you get to watch God act and move in ways that you couldn't orchestrate on your best days. 2. It's not like the Lord set me free in that and now I'm just free and I never wrestle with my freedom or the enemy never tries to put the chains back on me. It is a daily surrender, it is a daily reminder, it is a daily going back to the truth to be reminded of the freedom that is already mine, but I am so quick not to walk in. 3. The depths of God's grace. It really this bottomless well…You never ever get to the bottom of the well of God's grace. You're never too far gone. You've never blown it too much. 4. Surrender is not giving up, but it's giving over. 5. The beauty of praying for them [our kids] is that you get to watch God act and move in ways that you couldn't orchestrate on your best days. Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business. In this episode, I answer these questions- 1. I'm with my globe-trotting friend Tsh Oxenreider today talking about what it was like to take her young family on a trip around the world for a year, imposter syndrome, and stories of women who make the world go round. In this episode we discuss: What it's really like for a couple to take three kids around the world for a year. What do internet entrepreneurs really think about the question, “Do people still need to go to college?” The importance of telling women's stories while we are in the “messy middle” of going for their dreams. How new women entrepreneurs get caught up in comparison and the importance of seeing how other women really "do it all". Listen now: Click here to listen in iTunes. Click here to listen on Soundcloud. Click here to listen on Google Play. Click here to listen on Stitcher. Favorite quotes- After starting our trip around the world, my husband and I asked ourselves "What are we doing traveling around the world for a year with small kids and nothing but backpacks?" People like hearing that there are regular women entrepreneurs in the messy middle of work. On my podcast, Women's Work, I hear from women who fear the Imposter Syndrome of " On no, everyone's going to find out I have no idea what I'm doing." Starting out as a woman entrepreneur, we relate to people who say, "I'm still not sure it's going to work." When I've interviewed women entrepreneurs they would say, "I started out not really knowing what I was doing, but I did it anyway and learned as I went." Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business. In this episode, I answer these questions- What is your parenting advice when it comes to disciplining your kids? (37:44) Is God really listening when I talk to him? (40:52) I recently heard an entrepreneur say that to be successful the business always has to come first. And that I can't really have a life or friends outside of it. Is that really what running your own businesses is like? Today I'm with my favorite Bible-teaching-farmer friend Nicki Koziarz talking about how to overcome comparison, and what happens to a family that decides (all of a sudden) to buy a fixer-upper farm. In this episode we discuss: Nicki and her family's unexpected move to their “Fixer Upper Farm” How to recognize and overcome the comparison battle How to overcome the feeling that we aren't measuring up Favorite quotes- I think we are foolish to allow our souls to believe that comparison doesn't try to compromise things inside us because it's been happening since the beginning of time. Comparison is a battle to see who's truth we're ultimately going to align our lives with, ours or God's. We have to trust God so much that if He doesn't give it to us, we don't want it. I think that when we are asking that quiet question ‘why her?' I think that in order for us to really walk through it and if we are not going to let comparison compromise us, we are going to have to go back to truth! Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business. In this episode, I answer these questions- Are you a saver or a spender, and if you have any advice on how you learned to save? (27:00) Are ghosts real? Featuring Jo Saxton on confidence, not apologizing for our dreams, and thinking forward I'm with my brilliant and fierce friend Jo Saxton today talking about how we can thrive as women, how to learn not to hold ourselves back, and the joy that was 90's R&B In this episode we discuss: Why we all need a personal board of directors How women can increase their confidence How to think forward and not get stuck Why women often apologize for their dreams The throwback song Jo has on repeat (think 90s!) Listen now: Click here to listen in iTunes. Click here to listen on Soundcloud. Click here to listen on Google Play. Click here to listen on Stitcher Favorite quotes- You can actually do both [family and passions/career] if you're willing to think outside box about what this whole concept of “having it all” looks like. There is no need to apologize for how you are actually wired. You've got to say yes to how you have been wired. To the talents and the abilities you have been given. I want to be a catalyst for other people's success. What would you like to be said about what you have achieved with your one precious life? Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business. In this episode, I answer these questions- I am unhappy because I box myself in life. I don't try new things because I am afraid if I start something I will fail and look foolish. Can't go on living this way. Can you help? (41:30) What daily devotional do you use?
