This month, we're centering the full spectrum of Black Motherhood—and this episode makes it clear: some of the most transformative mothering doesn't begin with biology. It begins with presence. As part of our special April series for National Black Girl Month™, Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown and I are joined by Dr. Brooke Jones—licensed psychologist, founder of Fresh Start for the Mind, and adoptive mother—for a conversation that redefines what it means to mother. Together, we honor the caregivers whose stories often go untold: the aunties, godmothers, mentors, and grandmothers who shape futures, hold space, and quietly carry generations. Dr. Brooke shares her personal journey through infertility, adoption, and parenting, as well as the emotional labor she witnesses every day in her clinical practice. This episode asks: What does it mean to mother a child you didn't birth? How do we affirm women who are doing the sacred work of raising children and communities without recognition? And what would it look like if we measured motherhood not by origin—but by impact? If you've ever stood in the gap for someone else's child… if you've ever mothered from the sidelines or behind the scenes… this conversation is for you. Listen now as we continue National Black Girl Month™ by honoring motherhood in every form it takes. She wanted a practice that incorporated the mind, body, and spirit. Her love for psychological evaluations became evident in the surrounding communities. As referrals grew, so did Fresh Start. Dr. Jones first hired an additional psychologist (to support the numerous evaluation referrals) and counselors (to support an additional need for children, adults, couples, and families in the community). Then, Dr. Jones built administrative support, along with more providers that also offered psychiatric treatment, nutrition services, counseling, and coaching. In 2016, the company relocated to Suwanee and opened two additional locations in Stockbridge and Canton. Fresh Start is now comprised of over 30 staff, offering psychological evaluations, psychiatric care / medication management, counseling and coaching, and nutrition support. The growth of Fresh Start has been a journey. Dr. Jones has seen the needs for mental health grow in Georgia since starting her career. She is most proud of the people who work within the company and the difference they make in lives every day! She credits her faith as the driver for every growth opportunity and every expansion thus far; she values family and divine connections for encouraging her growth while also keeping her grounded; and she honors her own passion and optimism for people and humanity. Today's show is the first in an ongoing mini-series discussing Breeding Grounds, organizations that have developed and spawned future industry leaders. We'll cover both allocators and managers to see what we can learn about developing talent. In the first episode of the mini-series, we discuss Carnegie Corporation of New York. Ellen Shuman became Carnegie's first CIO in 1999 after working for David Swensen at Yale. Over her dozen year tenure and that of Meredith Jenkins and Kim Lew for the next dozen, and incredible 8 of the 17 investment professionals that walked in the door have become CIOs, and the rest appear either on their way or found their passion as leaders in complimentary roles or outside the industry. Those who became sitting CIOs are Meredith at Carnegie and Trinity Wall Street, Kim at Carnegie and Columbia, Jon Michael Consalvo at Carnegie, Alisa Mall at Michael Dell's Family Office, Niles Bryant at Bowdoin College, Brooke Jones at Bryn Mawr College, Ken Lee at Children's Healthcare, and Li Tan at Radian X.  Carnegie is a lesser-known allocator training ground than Yale, but it's produced half the number of future CIOs from fraction of the team size. My guests to discuss how this happened are Ellen Shuman, Meredith Jenkins, Kim Lew, and Alisa Mall. We cover the chronology of their paths, and the Carnegie organization and investment process, including recruiting, culture, research, decision-making, and succession. Alongside the many applicable lessons they share, their palpable love and respect for each other is evident from the get go. Reaching the next generation is entirely dependent upon how we see the next generation. We need a clear understanding of what they need and - just as important - what they already have to offer. When Jesus said to make disciples, that includes kids. And God's desire to work through people includes working through kids. It's a "both-and" conversation, and so we brought in both Brooke Jones and Mike Haynes to talk about how we can all more effectively partner with the next generation in the work of the Kingdom.

Brooke Jones experienced a strong career, which was most recently within the health policy and research sector in WA. With the necessary academic qualifications, she was a knowledgeable policy maker. This allowed her to be involved in the monitoring and implementation of key programs to support those in our society. However, this career was interrupted with her becoming a mother. As can often be the case after a significant life event, she reassessed her professional outlook during pregnancy, after child birth and through the wonder mothering a new born. Brooke changed her focus and has successfully studied to become a “midwife”

She let me in on the secret that mamas have your backs no matter how much time has passed. One of her many gifts is her honesty, which in turns makes you feel safe to be your truest self. In today's episode we talk about: "...the invisible network you never knew you had" aka mom friends, nourishing (and trusting) your body during pregnancy and postpartum, adjusting to your new life as a mom, the gift of having a doula, nursing and weaning, and so much more. I met Brooke Jones a few years back in the Florida Ultra Running community at the Skydive Ultramarathon where mostly insane people jump out of an airplane then run 100 miles, but that's a whole other crazy story for another time... Brooke is an ultrarunner and was a school teacher doing well in her career and moving up quickly. Over time she was facing some burnout and decided to make a major career change. After contemplating going back to school to change careers, she settled on becoming a coder, and you can follow her coding and mountain running adventures on Twitter and Instagram. I wanted to talk to her on the podcast because she wasn't a first or second year teacher and just decided to make a switch, she was 13 years in. That is not only a big deal, but takes some serious guts to stop what you are doing and make a big change. We talk about how she decided on development, where she went to school, and how she landed the awesome job at UpLaunch. If you are thinking about making a career switch or looking for your next gig, there is some great information here that is worth listening to. I couldn't be more excited for Brooke and will continue to follow her career path. I hope you enjoy our conversation in this second episode of the SynAckFinAck Podcast. In honor of Veterans Day, Bizcast is revisiting conversations we had with three CBS alumni, all former service members. All three are working to support veterans in their transition to civilian life. EMBA graduate Brooke Jones-Chinetti ’18 served in the Army for nearly ten years, which included a tour of duty in Iraq. After her commitment, Jones-Chinetti worked for JPMorgan Chase’s Office of Veterans’ Affairs. This inspired her to found Your Sequel, a networking organization designed to help female ex-service members make connections in the business world. Air Force pilot Dan Brillman ’12 and Army veteran Taylor Justice ’14 heard countless stories from their cohort about how complicated it was to access clinical and non-clinical social services. This led to their launching Unite Us, a centralized software platform that streamlines the connection between people and healthcare and other social service providers. As part of our salute to all veterans, here are Brooke, Dan, and Taylor telling their stories of life in the military, at Columbia Business School, and at their start-ups.

Brooke Jones-Chinetti ’18 served in the military for six years with two deployments to the Middle East. In this episode, Jones-Chinetti talks about the importance of selfless leadership, the responsibility of having a platform, and looks back at her two-year journey through the EMBA program. “Every day I go to class, I’m humbled,” she says. “I feel like I’m sitting next to the smartest people I ever met. And I’m proud of how we’ve evolved as a group. I’m proud of the diversity of thought. I'm proud of people’s accomplishments. We’ve seen new jobs, promotions, marriages, babies. Brooke Jones is the Vice President of the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation and a Life Coach living in the Denver, Colorado area. Brooke wants to live in a world where people choose kindness over violence, compassion over cruelty, and action over indifference. She also believes every office should offer yoga and a room full of kittens (for stress relief). As the Vice President, she oversees pretty much everything and everybody. She’s like an overlord. It’s pretty scary. Seriously though, she sees her role as being a support to all of us and cares deeply about work culture and making sure everyone has what they need to be successful.
