Dave Specht is the Director of the Drucker School Global Family Business Institute. His professional mission is to, Preserve Families and Perpetuate Businesses. He is the author of, “The Family Business Whisperer” and thought leader on topics surrounding generational continuity of businesses and family wealth. Prior to his current role, he trained 2,500 top advisors/bankers at a Private Bank on family dynamics and generational wealth issues. Dave is the creator of the Certificate in Advising Family Enterprises and the co-creator of The Generational Wealth Masterclass with Jay Hughes. Prior to his work at the bank, he founded Advising Generations, a consulting firm and established the Family Business Management program at the University of Nebraska. Dave lives in Washington state with his wife and 6 children. Takeaways The upbringing of individuals significantly shapes their relationship with money and business ownership. Ownership mentality can be cultivated and is essential for future generations. Family businesses often have a longer-term view compared to publicly traded companies. Transparency and communication are crucial for the success of family businesses. Spouses play a vital role in the dynamics of family businesses and should be included in decision-making. Wealth should be redefined to encompass well-being and qualitative capitals, not just financial capital. Gratitude, goals, and grit are essential values to instill in children raised in wealthy families. Successful family businesses often have a clear purpose beyond just making money. The transition of family businesses can be emotional and requires careful planning. Empathy is crucial for advisors working with families in transition. This week I welcome Parissa Behnia (www.sixensestrategy.com) who works with what she calls Modern Badasses. These are high-performing senior leaders who go eighty miles per hour in a forty-five mile per hour zone and don't always check to see if their teams (or clients) are strapped in for the ride, let alone interested in the destination. They are pattern interrupters and change agents. People describe them as being bold, brash, creative and sometimes like a bull in a china shop. Just like that bull in a china shop, a modern badass can inadvertently push people away instead of attracting, engaging or enrolling them. And disengaging others comes with significant hard and soft costs. Most people think it's better to ignore or sideline this type of leader. The truth is, modern badasses can have a positive outsized impact on all of us when they create new ways to engage and enroll clients, peers, and teams instead of repelling them. They have the capacity to be understood, respected and valued for who they are as opposed to hiding themselves and playing a smaller game to suit someone else's taste.Want more from Parissa? Here are the links. www.sixensestrategy.com badass.sixensestrategy.com linkedin.com/in/behnia BioParissa Behnia coaches C Suite and Senior leaders who are high will-high skill and have a growth mindset. In other words, they're badasses who go 80MPH in a 45MPH zone but don't always check to see if their team is strapped in or interested in going for the ride. These leaders are high value to a company but their edges may start to diminish their value. These days, leadership is full of complexities whether you're navigating from an audacious goal or trying to avoid that iceberg up ahead. In either case, Parissa's clients choose her because she's either sat in those seats or next to those seats often enough to know how it can feel to be alone in a crowded leadership room. She's unafraid to speak truth to power to help propel them forward. One of Parissa's favorite things to do is to stand in front of a whiteboard – real or pretend – to help clients imagine what the world could look like and then propels them as they navigate to that vision of success. This work enables clients to put together pieces of the puzzle to create the “A-Ha!” moment that ignites action. She leans into the discomfort of the unknown and invites her clients to embrace all of their talents (even ones they don't recognize or value fully) to create their own paths to success.. Parissa is the author of “Modern Badass: Tales from the Leadership Front”. She has taught entrepreneurship seminars and is a frequent speaker on strategy, leadership and entrepreneurship. Parissa is a Certified Professional Coach, holds a BA from Northwestern University and MBA from NYU's Stern School of Business.
In today's LinkedIn live, Neil McDonnell talks with Robert Marraro, Senior Procurement Specialist at Del Mar College Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC). about bidding, proposal reviews, federal agency networking and more. PTAC counselors are one of the "7 Mentors" every company should have on their informal Board of Advisors. They have vast resources available to them that can be used to support your business growth.Neil McDonnell brings 20+ years of government contracting experience. As a small business owner, he has personally won and supported government contracts for the Army, Navy, Air Force, HHS,VA, Transportation, Interior, Energy and the Executive Office of the White House.
I interviewed Parissa Behnia, CEO & Business Whisperer at Sixense Strategy. Parissa Behnia coaches C Suite and Senior leaders who are high will-high skill and have a growth mindset. In other words, they're badasses like you who go 80MPH in a 45MPH zone. These days, leadership is full of complexities whether you're navigating from an audacious goal or trying to avoid that iceberg up ahead. In either case, Parissa's clients choose her because she's either sat in those seats or next to those seats often enough to know how it can feel to be alone in a crowded leadership room. She's unafraid to speak truth to power to help propel you forward. With over two decades of corporate, consulting, coaching and – let's be honest – real life experience, Parissa's key strategic difference is Empathy. Empathy in business is more than being nice to one another, it's a strategic imperative. It means that leaders create context and understanding so that they do a better job of serving their customers AND engaging their teams. She's so passionate about the application of empathy in business that she's developed the Sixense Empathy Model for her clients to employ. And, she wants all of us to put empathy at the forefront of how we engage with everybody. One of Parissa's favorite things to do is to stand in front of a whiteboard – real or pretend – to help clients imagine what the world could look like and then propels them as they navigate to that vision of success. This work enables clients to put together pieces of the puzzle to create the “A-Ha!” or “Eureka!” moment that ignites action. She leans into the discomfort of the unknown and invites her clients to embrace all of their talents (even ones they don't recognize or value fully) to create their own paths out of the unknown. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Chelley Wild. We first met AGES ago when Denise Duffield-Thomas first came to London for an event, and we stayed in touch ever since. You may remember Chelley from episode 118, where we discussed How to Use Photos Online to Grow Your Business (her name was Michelle Wildman back then). Chelley and I have been meeting up lately for walks and we've been discussing both running and business—and how they're related. There are so many lessons we've learned along the way in one of those that can be translated to the other. We actually had so much to say that when we put together the notes for this episode, we had over five pages of them! We're thinking of writing a book on the topic (please let me know if you'd be interested, and we'll get it in the works). About Chelley Wild In joyful defiance of a school PE teacher telling her she'd be “better off not bothering with sport”, Chelley has gone on to kindle a lifelong passion for running. From running her first half marathon at University (she was terrified), to ramping up to marathons, to her latest forays into adventure trail racing, there's nothing Chelley loves more than the peace, flow and feeling of being fully alive that running gives her. 6 foot tall and a distinctly ‘average' build, Chelley does not look at all like a typical long-distance athlete - but has decided to claim the label of ‘runner' all the same. She is a passionate advocate for women runners, and how using your body to achieve physical feats - rather than just look pretty - can be hugely empowering. A true entrepreneur at heart, Chelley runs her Business Strategy company, The Business Whisperer, from her home in the beautiful Surrey Hills. The local forests and heathland provide the perfect backdrop to running out the stresses of each day, as well as an endless source of inspiration and beauty. Buddies in business as well as life, Chelley and Holly met years ago through an online community, and now regularly enjoy hikes and adventures together whilst brainstorming new ideas, setting the world to rights and connecting with life and Nature on a deeper level. Join Trish and Rob for a conversation with... Rk Springfield, CEO of Training Standards International. He is a motivational speaker, but the #1 compliment he has received is being called The Business Whisperer. He trains members of management teams in strategic leadership, project management, and a variety of managerial skills. He is also the author of The Human Experience: The Four Armies of the Earth, and he is also working on a book— with some help from Rob—called The Black & Blue Baby, about his upbringing. Rk grew up in Chicago in an extremely abusive environment. He has managed to break out of a long lineage of men who were abusive to their sons generation after generation. In Rk’s case, he also had a mother who was abusive in her own way, and later a step-mother was more of the same, only she added black magic to the mix through her voodoo practice.

The way Roger Ailes treated the women he worked with is flat-out wrong. I respect women and love talking to them, whether it’s about their business problems, relationships...whatever. We had an all-women line-up on this episode of the Business Whisperer. We talked business the whole way through with a twist at the end--a ‘very special’ woman who tickles my fetish. Stay tuned for that. There’s more to business than just profits--there’s also integrity. How do you maintain it when you’re a small bootstrapped company? Or what if you’re a super niche (and sort of nerdy) business that isn’t hitting enough sales? Or a company that helps cheerleaders Bring It On in competition? When you’re doing business outside the box, you gotta think outside of the box when it comes to solutions, too.Dive into how to handle these kinds of business issues and more in this installment of the Business Whisperer. Election day is behind us and I officially decided the Mi Vida is my favorite tequila drink, but the advice I give on this episode of the Business Whisperer is timeless. How do you overcome the struggles success can bring with maintaining inventory to supply the demand, reduced turnaround times, product management, and quality control? How do you find quality employees while dealing with government restrictions on hiring? What do you say to the nay-sayers who try to convince you your business model will never succeed? Join Christy Demetrakis and her special guest Peter Wilcock, author of The Business Whisperer for "How to Overcome your Limiting Beliefs" Tuesday, February 3rd at 6:30pm EST. About Peter Wilcock: I Started out in Leeds as a witty kid with national health specs, gazing through the local BMW showroom. Escaping a gas explosion in a pub whilst at Leeds Poly was the first hint there may be a spirit guide taking care of business. Unilever showed me how to sell, but not to be anything different. Seagrams showed me how to have fun. In- Wear allowed me to be cool without spending the cash. Initial taught me life can be a drudge. Then Comcast showed me that fate really exists. Finally a square peg in a square hole allowed all the instinct and natural skills to come flooding out. And how we changed the world. Paradigm’s shifted for fun. No-one wanted the internet but we gave it to them anyway – just in case . Lucky we did, 128k was the taster. What an amazing team building exercise also, I’m proud to have built my version of Springsteen’s E-Street Band. Then time to move on. In search of true bliss, a chance to do what I want, when I want, with who I want. And the chance to be there, all day until the end for someone so special. An honour. Becoming an investor is real hard core, that qualifies for being a true Entrepreneur when the cheque is signed and you ask the family to trust your judgement! So far so good. And I’m on the road speaking and coaching, passing on the experiences and sharing the secrets. And the first book is hot off the press! If someone asked the specky four-eyed kid from Leeds if he’d take the journey – he’d say YES !
