Maria Johnson and Catholic Mom contributor, Kristina Talbot interview the mother and son filmmakers behind the powerful film about Boys Town, Blue Baby. Matters Media announces the new feature documentary film BLUE BABY that follows eight boys through Fr. Edward J. Flanagan's Boys Town, a prison alternative established in Omaha, Nebraska in 1917. With unprecedented access, filmmakers take the audience inside Boys Town to a world that challenges what people have believed about problem behavior for thousands of years. This is a film that goes beyond the heart of a Catholic priest, and into the real-world impact of what he created. BLUE BABY will be available starting October 9. We need your help to get the word out via your network of influence. About the filmmakers: Josh and Lisa Sabey are the filmmakers behind American Tragedy, The Basement Talks, Blue Baby, and Going Sane. Their film American Tragedy won best documentary at the prestigious Boston Film Festival where it was one of three films screened opening night. (The other two were Terrence Malick's USA premiere of A Hidden Life and Taika Waititi's Jo Jo Rabbit.) Their latest film, The Basement Talks, debuted on Prime Video, Apple TV, and PBS World. Bring back Kmart. That was the theme Friday with UW-La Crosse political science professor, Dr. Anthony Chergosky in studio, in discussing the delay the city council gave developers of the Kmart lot and how we need to save the building. Three-Sixty Real Estate Solutions is getting another 18 months to bring their development plan online. But, if that doesn't happen, we began talks of a grassroots movement needing to start building its base now to save the building. Also dropped another big story within that conversation in how we could work Hatched Baby, the 9-foot statue of a blue baby's head coming out of an egg, into this movement. Ended the show talking about how Wisconsin state politicians are falling over themselves to be responsible using $600 million in public money to update the Milwaukee Brewers stadium. Began the show talking about two Congressmen embroiled in controversy and how they don't get thrown out of the US House or Senate because of thin margins. But, one of those controversial figures is also the Senator of New Jersey, where one of the last two Kmarts exists, so we talked of how he may be important to this Kmart movement.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's been gone a year and a half now, but one UW-La Crosse student is taking it upon herself to try and bring back "Blue Baby." Ashlyn Neader joined to talk about her petition to bring back a piece of art in the city of La Crosse called Hatched Baby. If you don't know, Hatched Baby was a 9-foot tall statue of a blue baby's head coming out of an egg. It was created by Wolfgang Auer, a German artist from La Crosse's sister city of Friedberg, Germany, and donated to the city. It was vandalized in September of 2021, and deemed irreparable, thus removed from its perch in front of the city's police headquarters. Neader's main reasoning behind the campaign is because she feels Hatched Baby's destruction is not representative of who the people of La Crosse are. She hopes to get the statue fixed by Auer and put back on display. Sign the petition here: https://www.change.org/p/bring-back-blue-babySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
La Crosse Mayor Mitch Reynolds in studio, discussing the city potentially cutting services, his demands for action from the Wisconsin Legislature in regards to the state budget, Delta bailing on La Crosse and bringing back “Blue Baby." Spent a lot of time on what the state needs to do to help fund municipalities like La Crosse in the upcoming two-year budget, as the Wisconsin Joint Finance Committee is holding hearings this week on those plans. Also hit on Delta Airlines leaving the La Crosse Airport and the impact there. Spent a couple minutes discussing a UW-La Crosse student's campaign to bring back the Hatched (Blue) Baby artwork that was destroyed from vandalism. But began and ended talking NBA playoffs, of course. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Psychotherapist Tracy Livecchi, LCSW, joins Paul Cardall to discuss healing hearts and minds of people born with an illness that requires a life time of medical care. Both Tracy and Paul were born with complex congenital heart defects. Although congenital heart disease or CHD is the least funded of all major illnesses, CHD remains the leading cause of infant related deaths. However, because of advancements in medicine and technology millions of people have survived and adapt to what would be considered a normal life, although their lives have required a life-time of medical care and surgical procedures. They swap stories and go into detail about the miracle of life and how Tracy's parents were instrumental in working with doctors to secure her survival. Because of the lack of information for lifelong patients, Tracy and her colleague Liza Morton, PhD have written "Healing Hearts and Minds: A Holistic Approach to Coping Well With Congenital Heart Disease." ABOUT TRACY LIVECCHI, LCSWTracy writes on her website: In terms of my training, I received my Masters Degree in Social Work from Rutgers University. I have worked in a variety of settings as a private therapist, a clinical director, as well as a consultant for long-term care and hospital settings. I have been working as a psychotherapist in private practice since 1998, and currently provide psychotherapy to individual adults, adolescents, and couples in my Westport practice. I work from an eclectic theoretical orientation and provide supportive counseling while also utilizing cognitive, behavioral, psychodynamic and trauma informed, mindfulness approaches, when appropriate. I am the Mental Health Consultant for the Adult Congenital Heart Association's Peer Mentorship Program and speak nationwide on the importance of addressing the psychosocial effects of heart disease. I am passionate about mental health access for all and have a special interest in working with individuals and their families dealing with serious and chronic illness.
God on the Big Screen: Something the Lord Made - David Banks Based on a true story, Vivien Thomas (Mos Def), a black man in the 1930s, is originally hired as a janitor, he proves himself adept at assisting the "Blue Baby doctor," Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman), with his medical research. When Blalock insists that Thomas follow him to Johns Hopkins University, they must find a way to skirt a racist system to continue their study of infant heart disease. Thomas is indispensable to Blalock's progress, but Blalock is the only one who is allowed to receive the acclaim. Rating: Not Rated. What stood out to you this week? Book Vs. Movie Something the Lord MadeThe 1989 Washingtonian Article Vs the 2004 HBO Movie The Margos learn part of the history of heart surgery starting with Katie McCabe's 1989 article Like Something the Lord Made from Washingtonian magazine which features the work of Vivien Thomas, one of the pioneers of the “Blue Baby” heart surgery techniques. Thomas, an African American janitor at Vanderbilt University during the American Depression went to work for Dr. Alfred Blalock as a research assistant in heart surgery. Thomas dreamed of being a doctor for decades but due to many circumstances, including racism and segregation, he was relegated to being an important part of the actual surgery and research but wasn't given proper attribution for his work until decades after the first successful surgery was performed. In the Washingtonian article, several doctors talk with reverence about the teachings of Thomas and his surgical skills. The movie was created for HBO in 2004 and stars Alan Rickman as Blalock, Mos Def (now known as Yasiin Bey) as Thomas, Kyra Sedgwick (Mary Blalock,) Gabrielle Union (Clara Thomas,) Merritt Wever (Mrs. Saxon,) Mary Stuart Masterson as Helen B. Taussig. It features experiments (faked for the movie) on dogs, so warning! It was eventually nominated for Outstanding Made for Television Movie and eight other categories for the Emmys that year, the Golden Globes, Director's Guild of America, NAACP Image Award, a Peabody, and was recognized by the American Film Institute. So, between the original story and the adaptation--which did we prefer? If you do the crime, you better be able to pay ... the fine? La Crosse County District Attorney Tim Gruenke joined. One of the things discussed was how the person who vandalized Hatched Baby might have to pay. Later we talked how the system favors people who can better afford to do the crime (as opposed to doing the time, or paying the fine). We also talked about the discussion in the county about a Citizens Police Board, as well as where we're at with some murder cases and how technology has affected the system. Join Trish and Rob for a conversation with... Rk Springfield, CEO of Training Standards International. He is a motivational speaker, but the #1 compliment he has received is being called The Business Whisperer. He trains members of management teams in strategic leadership, project management, and a variety of managerial skills. He is also the author of The Human Experience: The Four Armies of the Earth, and he is also working on a book— with some help from Rob—called The Black & Blue Baby, about his upbringing. Rk grew up in Chicago in an extremely abusive environment. He has managed to break out of a long lineage of men who were abusive to their sons generation after generation. In Rk’s case, he also had a mother who was abusive in her own way, and later a step-mother was more of the same, only she added black magic to the mix through her voodoo practice.

The Washington State Pollution Control Hearings Board disappointed environmental leaders in October when it allowed largely unregulated concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) to continue operating in the state. CAFOs are giant cattle, pig, and other livestock operations that have manure waste ponds, like those that overflowed in North Carolina after Hurricane Florence.Chris Wilke of Puget Sound Keepers talks to Earth911 about the ruling, its implications for public health. CAFOs pollute groundwater and the air, contributing to cardiovascular, reproductive and developmental problems, including Blue Baby syndrome. CAFO pollution is also implicated in cancer. Wilke, though disappointed, said the court battle is not over. The environmental coalition that asked for better regulation of CAFOs will appeal to the Washington Department of Ecology and higher courts for changes.
