Abstract: When we interact with objects, signals from the hand convey information about the objects and our interactions with them. A basic feature of these interactions, the locations of contacts between the hand and object, is often only available via the sense of touch. Information about locations of contact between a brain-controlled bionic hand and an object can in principle be signaled via intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of somatosensory cortex (S1), which evokes touch sensations that are localized to a specific patch of skin. To provide intuitive location information, tactile sensors on the robotic hand drive ICMS through electrodes that evoke sensations at skin locations matching sensor locations. This approach requires that ICMS-evoked sensations be focal, stable, and distributed over the hand. To systematically investigate the localization of ICMS-evoked sensations, we analyzed the projected fields (PFs) of ICMS-evoked sensations - their spatial extent - from reports obtained over multiple years from three participants implanted with micro-electrode arrays in S1. First, we found that PFs vary widely in their size, are highly stable, and are distributed over large swaths of each participants hand. Second, PFs increase in size as the amplitude and frequency of ICMS increases. Third, leveraging participants with residual sensation, we found that PF locations match the locations of the receptive fields (RFs) of the neurons near the stimulating electrode. Furthermore, PFs tended to be subsumed by the corresponding RFs. Fourth, multi-channel stimulation yielded a PF that reflected an approximately additive combination of the PFs of the component channels. By stimulating through electrodes with largely overlapping PFs, then, we could evoke more focal sensations, experienced primarily at the intersection of the component PFs. To assess the functional consequence of this phenomenon, we implemented multi-channel ICMS-based feedback in a bionic hand and demonstrated that the resulting sensations are more localizable than are those evoked via single-channel ICMS. E., Bensmaia, S. J. Abstract: Manual interactions with objects are supported by tactile signals from the hand. This tactile feedback can be restored in brain-controlled bionic hands via intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of somatosensory cortex (S1). In ICMS-based tactile feedback, contact force can be signaled by modulating the stimulation intensity based on the output of force sensors on the bionic hand, which in turn modulates the perceived magnitude of the sensation. In the present study, we gauged the dynamic range and precision of ICMS-based force feedback in three human participants implanted with arrays of microelectrodes in S1. To this end, we measured the increases in sensation magnitude resulting from increases in ICMS amplitude and participant's ability to distinguish between different intensity levels. We then assessed whether we could improve the fidelity of this feedback by implementing 'biomimetic' ICMS-trains, designed to evoke patterns of neuronal activity that more closely mimic those in natural touch, and by delivering ICMS through multiple channels at once. We found that multi-channel biomimetic ICMS gives rise to stronger and more distinguishable sensations than does its single-channel counterpart. We conclude that multi-channel biomimetic ICMS conveys finely graded force feedback that more closely approximates the sensitivity conferred by natural touch. Copy rights belong to original authors. Newly Hired head coach James Callier of Miami Westminster Christian joins Larry Blustein
Michael Callier, Head of Legal Solutions and Consulting and colleague Edward Sohn, Head of Solutions at legal services company Factor discuss how in-house legal teams, their outside counsel and new law players like alternative legal service providers (ALSPs), can collaborate and maximize productivity by leveraging the strengths of each. Factor is a new law company (sometimes described as a managed legal services provider) providing legal and contracting solutions to in-house counsel and their lawyers. Factor describes what it does as “having a niche focus on the mid-to higher complexity transactional legal work that forms the core workload of most in-house legal and contracting functions.” In this episode of the Technically Legal Podcast, Michael and Ed and explain how all players in the legal ecosystem can and should work together to turn out efficient and quality work product for clients. While much of Factor's focus is contract lifecycle management (CLM), Michael and Ed point out that efficient processes and appropriate use of software solutions may be applied to many areas of legal work. In fact, when collaboration and legal processes are done right, Michael says it can solidify the position of legal departments and legal teams as “legal integrators” connecting and influencing various parts of an organization and providing positive impact on business results. Ed takes it a step further and points out that ALSPs should become seamless integrated extensions of legal departments and become not vendors being managed, but just another member of the legal team.

This week we talk with Factor's Ed Sohn and Michael Callier on the consulting for in-house legal teams through what they describe as New Law companies. New Law is who corporate legal counsel reach out to in order to streamline their operations and find ways of integrating themselves into the overall mission of the corporation, rather than just the department which mitigates legal and business risks. Sohn and Callier stress that New Law companies are not a threat to established law firms, but rather a partner who can help firms differentiate themselves from their peers by allowing for the consultation to clients for alternative legal strategies. Ed Sohn on Barriers to Adoption in Law Process adoption, or its failure oftentimes rests with people. It actually rests with social learning. it actually rests with how do you celebrate and story tell and create a culture that's conducive to the adoption of technology and innovation. Michael Callier on Change Management in the Legal Industry To be honest, it's not that people fear change, it's that people fear the loss associated with change. We change every day. We change clothes. We eat different things. We go to different places that we've never been before. So it's not it's not fear of change, it's fear of the loss associated with change. Her work has been featured in Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Better Homes and Garden, the Wall Street Journal, and many more. Listen to this episode as she shares decorating tips and advice from her many years of experience in the decorating field. What You’ll Hear on This Episode: Heidi talks about neutral colors and how to use them Heidi shares about her journey to decorating How to keep colors from feeling depressing and combining different shades The hosts and Heidi talk about how to balance different colors How to incorporate different floral patterns Heidi discusses her own house transformation The hosts and Heidi talk about brown furniture and how to decorate with it Heidi shares tips on how to approach layouts of rooms, small spaces, and decorations Decorating Dilemmas Hi Jill, For small spaces, Heidi suggests doing all the interior doors the same color, but everything is dependent on the house itself and the architecture. If you are dealing with a place that has six doors in a small space, then you probably shouldn’t paint the doors a color. But in small doses, you could do all the interior doors the same color and maybe leave the trim white. -- Hi Jordan, What this room needs is a vintage rug, maybe with some violet, purple, or brown undertones to ground the space. There is a lot of white going on in the dining chairs, chandelier, and buffet, so something to richen it up the lighter colors would be lovely and child friendly. Pattern rugs are a great way to hide stains so vintage, wool rugs are wonderful for this. This room really needs draperies. Go all the way to the ceiling or as high as you can with the rod and all the way to the floor. Put panels on each window so it frames the pretty piece of artwork in between, and keep the colors just a neutral linen with a pinch pleat at the top. Another option would be to layer in some color and patterns through the draperies. Lastly, for the dining room, there seems to be enough furniture in there. However, a random vintage chair to bring in some floral patterns would be gorgeous. Good luck, Jill and Jordan!
