Kate Allgood, a former ice hockey player and founder of Quantum Performance, shares her journey from being a promising athlete to transitioning into a career in sports psychology. Kate talks about her early years playing hockey in Canada, competing against boys and eventually becoming a potential candidate for the 2010 Winter Olympics. After graduating college, she came to Southern California to train and play in a professional women's league, but the league folded, leading her to reevaluate her career path. The unexpected turn of events led Kate to reflect on her passion for hockey and consider her future. Being away from the familiar environment of Toronto allowed her to explore her own identity and ambitions. As she weighed her options and contemplated her next steps, she decided to retire from hockey. This decision was met with mixed reactions, particularly from her father, who had high expectations for her. Following her retirement, Kate remained in San Diego and pursued a certification program in Muscle Activation Techniques. She also enrolled in graduate school, specializing in applied sports psychology. After completing her studies, Kate founded Quantum Performance, a high-performance coaching firm focused on mental training for high achievers. Kate has since worked with elite athletes, Navy SEALs, SWAT Officers, and Marine Corps Pilots, helping them optimize their performance through mental training. Kate is also the author of 3 books, the most recent: The Athlete Within: How to Build Your Mental Game for Peak Performance, published in 2023. She also wrote: Get Into The Zone: The Essential Guide To High Performance Through Mental Training, published in 2021 and Fortitude: The Essential Guide to Building and Sustaining Mental Toughness, published in 2017. The World Junior Championships begin today in Edmonton. And the summer date is not the reason they'll be different this year. The past few months have seen disturbing accusations of sexual assault against several members of two team Canadas — 2003 and 2018. Hockey Canada has spent decades of time and energy turning its world juniors into a Canadian myth, and lots of people have profited from that. These accusations, and revelations from Hockey Canada itself to a government committee have shattered that. Can it ever be put back together? And finally, why did it take so long to get here? It's not as though there haven't been plenty of warning signs ignored along the way...GUEST: Michael Grange, Sportsnet

For generations, Canadian boys and girls from BC to Newfoundland and Labrador have grown up with dreams of wearing their home providence's NHL jersey or scoring goals on Hockey Night in Canada for the whole nation to see, just like Richard, Messier, and Gretzky before them. Or so we've all thought… According to a new survey of 1,000 Canadian hockey parents co-commissioned by Scotiabank Hockey Club and FlipGive, Canadian hockey might not be as generational as it seems. Surprisingly, 63% of hockey parents surveyed did not themselves play Canada's national sport growing up. Guest: Elizabeth Gladney VP of Marketing for FlipGive

I love hockey. It was in my sports repertuar at one time. And even though I had dreams of one day becoming a professional hockey player, I had to pass that dream on to folks like Marc Zanetti. Marc hails from Canada, where in north America is seems all hockey players originate. He turned pro at the age of 17 and hasn't looked back. He's a serious pro in a tough sport, but with a super fun personality. Having “cut his teeth” in the Canadian leagues, he has now played professional hockey for multiple European teams - including being “leased” from one team he played on to another team, something I'd never heard of before. Currently Marc plays for a Russian team. Feisty on the rink, and down to earth outside, Marc tells us his life as a Pro Hockey Player on-season, off-season, fights in matches, winning overtime matches and sports in general. Come on in and meet a great guy, athlete and individual; take a listen to what the life of a professional sportsman entails. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-who-are-you-podcast/support

Outliers - by Malcolm Gladwell 'The Story of Success' What seemingly arbitrary fact is common amongst the top Canadian Hockey players? Tomorrow will be the 30th anniversary of a goal that will forever go down in Canadian hockey history. Mention 'Gretzky to Lemieux' to someone and there's a good chance that they'll remember the 1987 Canada Cup where Wayne Gretzky passed the puck to Mario Lemieux who then scored the game winning goal against the Soviets. Scott catches up with Ron Reusch, the colour commentator of that game, to recall the goal that went down in history. Guest: Ron Reusch, Legendary Hockey Commentator-The Ticats might hire Johnny Manzeil, the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy and has been a first round draft pick for the Cleveland Browns as a quarterback. He seemingly did everything but succeed in the NFL. Since then, he's gotten into trouble with the law which has made him a very controversial figure.
