Fed up with their own inadequate and expensive care systems, many elderly Westerners are choosing to retire to Thailand, where care is cheaper and often better. Many say Thailand's Buddhist culture and respect for the elderly means Thais are naturally caring. It's a booming sector, and is only likely to grow as we all live longer. But the decision to move can be complex, particularly when it involves retirees with dementia. People have been accused of dumping their sick relatives in Thai care homes, far from family. Is this exploitation – rich Westerners taking advantage of Thailand's low wages? And what does it mean for local health systems, as care workers are lured away to look after foreign residents? If you would like to get in touch with the show, please email: businessdaily@bbc.co.ukPresented and produced by Gideon Long(Picture: British retiree Liz Jackson, now living in Chiang Mai.)

J-Sei Home Closes After 30 Years, Leaving Bay Area Japanese Seniors in Need The 1960s and 70s were a pivotal time for community activism – with the civil rights and anti-war movements, the Black Panther Party, and student protests that established ethnic studies programs on college campuses. That activism led to a decades-old critical lifeline for Japanese American elders: culturally sensitive senior care homes. But in recent years, these kinds of homes have been closing down. As KQED's Cecilia Lei reports, the closures highlight how the Japanese American community is at a crossroads.    LA's El Compa Negro Plays Regional Mexican Music, Straight Outta Compton Compton is known for being the heart of West Coast rap – from Dr. Dre to Kendrick Lamar.  But Compton has changed a lot. According to census data, 70% of the city's residents identify as Latino or Hispanic. This shift can be seen and heard in an artist from Compton named Rhyan Lavelle Lowery, aka “El Compa Negro.” He's a Black musician who sings regional Mexican music. Reporter Aisha Wallace-Palomares takes us on a trip to meet him.  Transgender Community Builds Bonds at This SF Self-Defense Class Many transgender, nonbinary and gender-expansive people are feeling vulnerable because of anti-trans policies from the Trump administration. The COVID-19 pandemic awakened the nation – and the world – to the fact that small-house eldercare homes were substantially safer places to deliver long-term care compared with traditional nursing homes. And while it's now been almost five years since the onset of the pandemic, Canadian health policy makers such as Samir Sinha, MD, continue to raise awareness of the need for the proliferation of models such as Green House homes. As it happens, his appearance on this week's episode coincides with his new report, titled “There's No Place Like Home: Why Canada Must Prioritize Small Care Home Models in its Provision of Long-Term Care,” published by his Toronto Metropolitan University's National Institute on Ageing, where he is director of health policy research. Susan Ryan sits down with Dr. Sinha to discuss his work, the new report, and why he wants Canada to prioritize small care home models in the future delivery of long-term care services. Dr. Sinha, who is also a geriatrician and clinician scientist at Sinai Health System and the University Health Network in Toronto, a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, has lots to say about eldercare, his desire to help and to work with vulnerable populations.  Listen to the episode to find out why he believes importance of adequate staffing and the role of universal direct care and its relationship to better resident-centered care. Send me a DM here (it doesn't let me respond), OR email me: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.comThis week on December 18th, 2024, the world lost an amazing human and friends, and one of my favorite humans of all time, survivor and warrior, Kevin Sutherland. In lieu of Kevin's devastating passing, I am devoted to finish the mission he started by continuing to share his story, continuing to call out every last person who failed him, and continuing to shed a light on the darkness that Kevin and many other survivors face, fight, and overcome their entire lives.Kevin was such a special person - I can't convey this enough. He was a bright light, a brilliant mind and story-teller, a humble soul, and someone who was too good for this world. The abuse and torment he suffered his entire life is nothing short of horrendous, inexcusable, and just as devastating as his loss. He had a tremendous impact on me personally - he was so loving and appreciative to me for offering a space for him to share his story. I felt and feel extremely honored that Kevin shared his testimony publicly before his departure so that we can continue his mission in his memory. It's all he wanted in his passing was for us to take the torch he was too exhausted to carry anymore and cross the finish line on his behalf. So, with that being said, here is Part 1 of Kevin's 3-part testimony. Here are the show notes I originally wrote below.Rest in paradise, angel. I pray you are now basking in the peace you always deserved that was stolen from you.I love you forever and ever, my sweet Kevin - I still can't believe you are gone...I will never, ever, stop fighting for you. -----------------------Joining us this week is Kevin Sutherland, survivor of systemic child care home abuse, who has kept silent about telling the truth regarding his harrowing story for his entire life... until now. Breaking his silence in this 2-part series, Kevin walks us through the chronology of his complex and heart-breaking story that started when he was just an infant and continues on to this day where he is now on a mission to expose all the corruption that took place when he was in foster care and get justice once and for all.Kevin's story is important. It's important because there are MILLIONS of children just like him who are still going through this abuse as we speak. There are millions of survivors who are silenced into never having their story heard as we speak. In Part 1, we dive into the first part of Kevin's life centered around the horrific abuses he survived and discuss in depth problems with the foster / child care system that are grossly neglected by the public. In Part 2, we go into a situation that happened as a result of Kevin's abuses that had him convicted of a crime and sent to prison, but never addressed the root cause of the crime itself: Child Abuse. His abusers are still free and the system that failed him is still sheltering children without ever taking a penalty, yet Kevin lost years of his life paying a price for doing something that could have been prevented had an adult stepped in to care for him. The media grossly misrepresented Kevin by eliminating his side of the story, so he is here today to tell you The Truth straight from his own mouth. This story needs shared far and wide - Kevin is a brave hero and someone we need to open our ears and eyes to who stands before you today to speak on behalf of millions of children just like him who were horrifically abused and made to pay a price for the side effects of the abuse without ever having the abuse itself addressed. Please help in elevating Kevin's voice and story by SHARING, LIKING, COMMENTING, ANSupport the show

The bosses of an air show being held in Thanet has told the KentOnline Podcast there's no truth to the rumour it could have to be called off because of road closures. If the Manston International Air Show is to go ahead in 2025, it would mean major roads around the event would have to be shut – a move that could cause gridlock during the summer holidays. Also in today's podcast, a Nando's restaurant which claimed to have closed for “some DIY” was actually pest-proofing to help solve its “mouse activity” problem.Bosses were given a two star hygiene rating after the rodents were spotted by inspectors. Terrified neighbours say children “dicing with death” after climbing on roofs and into windows at an abandoned care home in Deal. The site is set for redevelopment but police have been called to reports of groups of youths accessing the derelict site. The head chef of a restaurant in Kent has told the Podcast what it's like to lose a Michelin star. You can hear from Graham Garrett, chef at The West House in Biddenden, on what it was like to lose the accolade after holding it for 16 consecutive years. And, charity volunteers have been left stunned after Home Bargains bosses would not allow a Father Christmas fundraiser to be set up in a Kent store.RNLI organisers had arranged for their Santa to collect donations from shoppers and dish out goodie bags to children – only for volunteers to be turned away on the day.

Why have gardens been underused in care home settings in the past, even when they're designed to be used? This episode, my guest is Debbie Carroll. Debbie is a Southampton based garden designer with experience in designing for care homes and other health settings for residents with dementia. Her work in these surroundings prompted her to question why these gardens were not more actively used even when they were designed to the latest design guidance. Along with her fellow designer Mark Rendell they researched what hindered engagement with the garden, in particular for people living with dementia. About Debbie Carroll Debbie Carroll is a Southampton based garden designer celebrating 20 years as a designer. She is passionate about gardens being well used and well-loved long after she has left. Her experience in designing for care homes and other health settings for residents with dementia prompted the question of why gardens were not more actively used even when designed to the latest design guidance.  Along with her fellow designer Mark Rendell they researched what hindered engagement with the garden, in particular for people living with dementia. Step Change Design Ltd was formed 10 years ago to share the findings of this study and has since published their ‘Why don't we go into the garden?' series of books and tools. These support both the care sector towards more person-centred care and designers in working effectively alongside them. Their ultimate aim is to enable residents to continue to step outside as and when they choose and for gardens to be well-used and much loved long after the designer has left. Making Gardening Accessible - Hello and welcome to this week's episode of Roots and All, where my guest is garden designer, TV personality and Trustee of the Gardening with Disabilities Trust Mark Lane. Mark talks about the various types of challenges people can face that might impede their activity in the garden, and how gardens and gardening can be adapted to enable people to carry on with these activities. He gives some excellent, practical advice for anyone who may need to adapt horticulture to suit their own needs or those of others. Please support the podcast on Patreon
