Artificial intelligence is having a growth spurt and there are a few ways to approach the quickly evolving technology. You can resist it, help advance it, ignore it or learn to use it. Minnesota State University Moorhead is going with that last option and launching a new Institute of Applied AI. An anonymous donor provided funding to start the institute, which the university plans to open in the fall. For a closer look at these plans, Jason Trainer, the university's vice president of enrollment management and strategic efforts, joined Minnesota Now to talk about the program.
At Google Cloud Next 2025, Google Cloud Vice President of Applied AI Duncan Lennox sits down with Bob Evans in part three of our series "Google Cloud and the AI Revolution." They discuss how Google Cloud is redefining enterprise applications through purpose-built AI agents, the shift from incremental to transformational innovation, and how businesses can harness agentic AI to deliver seamless, end-to-end customer experiences at scale.Google Cloud's Agentic RevolutionThe Big Themes:Beyond Infrastructure to Applied AI: Historically, Google Cloud was associated with infrastructure, data analytics, databases, and backend technologies. However, it's now undergoing a transformation, stepping boldly into the realm of applied AI. Rather than just competing with established players in enterprise applications (like ERP, HCM, or CRM), Google Cloud is innovating at a more foundational level by creating entirely new types of agents and applications. The Customer Engagement Suite, A CRM Rethink: Google Cloud's Customer Engagement Suite isn't just an upgrade to traditional contact center software — it's a full reimagining of how businesses engage with customers. Historically, customer service was seen as a cost center: something to be optimized for efficiency and minimized wherever possible. Google Cloud flips that on its head. With the Customer Engagement Suite, the focus shifts toward creating differentiated, high-quality customer experiences that build brand loyalty, satisfaction, and even new revenue streams.Best Adoption Practices: Lennox discusses several best practices for companies looking to succeed with applied AI. First, start somewhere tangible — don't try to "boil the ocean." Select a high-visibility area where AI can solve real problems and produce measurable results. Second, tie your efforts directly to business outcomes, such as customer experience improvements, revenue growth, or operational savings. Third, choose a strategic partner capable of evolving with you as the technology advances. The Big Quote: "Experimentation is great, of course, but what I see more and more as I talk to C-level executives is they now want to be able to deliver ROI, and you have to make some bets. You've got to choose some areas. For us in applied AI, Customer Engagement Suite has been a great one, because it's a problem that C-level execs can understand."Learn More:Check out details about Customer Engagement Suite, and follow Duncan Lennox on LinkedIn.
The Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer wants the UK to become “one of the great AI superpowers”. Earlier this year the government published a plan to use artificial intelligence in the private and public sectors to boost growth and deliver services more efficiently. Once mainly the preserve of the tech community, AI really entered public awareness with the release of ChatGPT, a so-called “chatbot” founded by the US company OpenAI at the end of 2022. It can write essays, scripts, poems and even write computer code …and millions of people are using it. David Aaronovitch and guests discuss whether the UK could become a successful AI hub, as the government hopes and asks if we'll be able to compete globally with the US and China, the home of huge tech companies?Guests: Dame Wendy Hall, Regius Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Web Science Institute at the University of Southampton. Still think of AI as just a chatbot? It's time to reframe that mindset. Logan Kilpatrick of Google DeepMind joins the show to discuss the latest advances with Gemini, including long-context reasoning and native multimodal capabilities—and why UX, not chat, is the real frontier in AI. He shares examples from Khan Academy and others that show how smarter, more human-centered experiences are key to unlocking AI's full potential. Logan and Mohan Rao also explore why it's such an exciting time to be working in AI, with developers making groundbreaking discoveries daily, and how the next wave of AI in services businesses has so much promise, as we shift from real-time answers to asynchronous, reasoning-driven systems with humans in the loop. Next, CMO Courtney Baker teams up with CEO David DeWolf and Chief Product and Technology Officer Mohan Rao to look at why, in the AI age, leaders need to think differently about how to deliver value with concepts like learning systems, compounding intelligence, and more. They also join Logan in challenging the chatbot-centric mental model that many may hold about AI because it has been our introductory experience to the technology. They explore why simply deploying chat interfaces isn't the future—and why UX is key to making AI work for real business outcomes. Plus, Pete Buer breaks down Anthropic's $61B valuation from their latest funding round and looks at how businesses should evaluate LLMs for fit and function, not just from what they read in the latest headlines. Data is pouring into your business every second, but where are the insights you need to act on it? Just 27% of business executives in a recent Forrester study said their data and analytics projects produce actionable insights. In this episode, we look at how AI can help bridge the gap between the overwhelming amounts of data available today and the actionable intelligence executives need to drive results. Knownwell CMO Courtney Baker, CEO David DeWolf, and Chief Product and Technology Officer Mohan Rao kick things off by breaking down the journey from raw data to wisdom. They discuss why 60-70% of enterprise data goes unanalyzed and how leaders can leverage AI to surface hidden insights, not just confirm what they already know. Plus, they explain why vision is critical: if you don't know what you're looking for, your AI won't either. For our expert interview, Pete Buer sits down with Arman Eshraghi, CEO of Qrvey, to discuss how SaaS companies can embed analytics into their products, empowering customers with self-serve insights. Send us a textIn deze speciale aflevering presenteert dr. The 2024 election is likely decided by a handful of states. Since 1996, Georgia has gone red in America's presidential elections, but that changed in 2020 when President Biden narrowly won the state by 0.2 percent of the vote. Now in the 2024 race, most pundits consider Georgia to be a crucial swing state. With a little over a month until the election, seven states have become the campaign's primary battlegrounds. Co-anchor of America's Newsroom, Bill Hemmer joins the Rundown to break down the latest numbers from the Peach state and what the candidates must do to win over voters. Two months ago, a software bug in a system update from the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused issues around the nation. It resulted in the grounding of thousands of flights, emergency services outages and internet blackouts. CrowdStrike Vice President Adam Meyers testified before the House Homeland Security Subcommittee about the widespread outages, and what steps they have taken to ensure this is prevented in the future. CEO of Applied AI, John Cofrancesco joins the podcast to discuss his takeaways from the CrowdStrike hearing, what steps must be taken to avoid further outages, and the possibility of a foreign actor hacking into American security systems. It's an underlying skill that we really have to harness in all of our college, university, and high school programs. It's fundamental. We seem to teach people how to problem solve, but this is table stakes. In order to ever get AI right, we've got to solve the data challenges.”“There's no question on whether business value and how to measure AI's return on investment (ROI) is always top of mind in my discussions with executives. But what they really want to know is if their existing ROI methods are sufficient or not. What are the new metrics that they need to put in place to validate AI and its sustainability?”“We're not at the high-growth stage of AI innovation. We're in the early experimentation stage. We don't have international guardrails. All of these systems are going to take around 20-years to put in place. It takes six years to put a new university curriculum in place. People have to take responsibility to learn. This is a fundamental shift and it's one that's happening at break lightning speed.”Mentions:Mood InsightsGallup Research: 1 in 5 Employees Feel Lonely Worldwide KFF Loneliness and Support Networks Survey United States Artificial Intelligence Institute Dr. Cindy Gordon's AI Insights NewsletterHispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement and SalesChoice Whitepaper: Why Diversity Equity and Inclusion Leaders Must Lead in AIBio: Dr. Cindy Gordon ICD.D. is the CEO of SalesChoice, a SaaS AI company focused on Ending Growth Uncertainty for Human Advantage, and has been recognized by Onalytica as one of the top AI global influencers. Transforming Customer Experiences One Interaction at a Time Shep Hyken interviews Brian Higgins, Chief Customer Experience Officer of Verizon Consumer Group. He talks about how every interaction can shape brand perception and how to use AI to enhance customer and employee experience. This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more: Will AI replace human employees? How can AI and human employees work together to enhance customer service? Why should companies prioritize customer experience? What is the role of AI in improving the interaction between employees and customers? In what ways can AI personalization impact customer loyalty and retention? Top Takeaways: The customer experience is essential for any business. It plays a role in attracting and keeping customers. It affects how customers perceive the brand, its products, and pricing. An exceptional experience keeps customers coming back and builds brand love. Technology is transforming customer experience. Companies use AI to provide employees with real-time information, helping them better assist customers and enhance the overall experience. Instead of replacing jobs, AI empowers employees by working alongside them. This allows them to focus on interpreting and sharing information with the customer in a way that best suits their needs, whether empathetic, energetic, enthusiastic, detailed, or simplified. Digital interactions are crucial for enhancing the customer experience, but they must be organic. Brands need to ensure that their customers want to interact with them digitally, and when they do, it needs to be seamless. The employee experience is closely linked to the customer experience. If the employees are unhappy and don't feel they have the right policies and tools, your customers will not have a good experience. AI can simplify complex business interactions and lead to a more customer-centric experience. By using predictive and generative AI, businesses can anticipate what customers need, offer relevant deals, and make complex information easier for employees to understand and relay to customers. Brands must prioritize creating a positive impact in every interaction, keeping in mind that it may be the customer's only interaction with you in a long time. The role of every employee is to prioritize each interaction as a key moment, recognizing that it can significantly impact the brand and Net Promoter Score. By focusing on delivering amazing experiences every time, employees can play an essential role in building brand love and long-term customer relationships. Plus, Shep and Brian discuss how Verizon continuously monitors and mitigates pain points at every stage of the customer journey. Tune in! Quote: "Empowering your employees to quickly and correctly address any breakdown in the customer experience is crucial. Ensure you provide them with the tools to engage with customers effectively." In this episode, we chat with Lake Dai (Founder & Managing Partner @ Sancus Ventures), who shares her career story & how to harness AI technology in a way that is both effective & compassionate. We cover the concept of “co-parenting AI”; why ethics in AI is non-negotiable; and how to create compassionate AI. Lake also reveals how she became a veteran at serving on boards & why it is something she is passionate about. We dissect ways current eng leaders who are interested in board service can gain the right experiences & demonstrate their value as a potential board member.ABOUT LAKE DAILake Dai is Founder and Managing Partner of Sancus Ventures, a VC firm focused on pre-seed to seed stage companies, investing in the next generation of software infrastructure for applications, such as distributed computing, AI model management, platform scalability, data privacy & safety, cybersecurity and more.Lake has been an Adjunct Professor of Applied AI at Carnegie Mellon University since 2016. She was a keynote speaker on AI ethics, data privacy, real-world applications, and AI education topics at the UN, UK Parliament, California State, and leading tech conferences such as the MIT conference and VentureBeat."Students ask, 'Why do I have to study AI ethics? Why can't I just jump into how do I build this model?' If you imagine AI as a very powerful tool, there is no difference between teaching building AI tools from teaching people how to use a weapon. If you ever take any weapon training classes, the first thing people teach you is safety, which is really understanding how the weapon works and how much impact both on the positive and negative side to people surround you. That part is missing for a lot of AI technical training these days.”- Lake Dai This episode is brought to you by testRigor!testRigor is trusted by tens of thousands of companies across the globe, including Netflix, Splunk, BusinessWire, and more to solve three main problems with end-to-end test automation:It's challenging, expensive, and slow to hire QA Automation EngineersLow productivity building your own QA AutomationFragile tests, that cause maintenance to consume enormous amounts of timetestRigor solves all of the above by allowing our users to express test cases in plain EnglishTo learn more, check out a case study on testRigor hereSign up for a free trial today at testrigor.comSHOW NOTES:Why VC fundraising is set to thrive in 2024 & beyond (2:14)Eng leaders should focus on AI ethics (6:09)The importance of starting with a safety check before implementing technology (8:14)Lake's recommendations for eng leaders to guide current & future AI dev (9:46)Third-party involvement with internal building processes (12:22)Strategies for helping engineers address AI dev in a mid or late-stage roadmap (14:06)The concept of co-parenting AI & its implication for eng leaders (15:40)Benevolent AI & feeding AI compassion information / data (18:50)How to harness AI to address societal challenges & create positive outcomes (22:42)Examples of AI addressing climate change & education-related issues (24:44)Three reasons why Lake is passionate about serving on boards (28:33)The positive impact of serving as a board member (31:40)How to gain the right experience & demonstrate value to get on a board (33:21)Why it's important to let others know you're looking for a board role (35:17)Rapid fire questions (40:51)LINKS AND RESOURCESOutlive: The Science and Art of Longevity - Wouldn't you like to live longer? In this episode of The New CISO, host Steve is joined by guest Mani Masood, Head of Information Security and Applied AI at a prominent healthcare MSP.Also a professor and family man, Mani's various life experiences shaped his impressive decades-long career. Today, he shares his insight on balancing education with experience and embracing AI as a security leader. Listen to the episode to learn more about Mani's career and education journey, the importance of having real-world skills, and what inspired Mani to write a book.Listen to Steve and Mani discuss how to adapt to new technology advancements and if InfoSec professionals should champion AI:Meet Mani (1:35)Steve introduces guest Mani Masood, who has worked in the security industry for two decades. First, Mani started in IT before transitioning into Information Security. Now, AI has quickly become a significant component of his role.Mani shares a story when a college professor saw his nervousness before an exam and suggested he get a job. His professor assured him that getting real-world experience would be extremely valuable.Real World Expertise (6:49)Mani reflects on how getting a degree is not the be-all-end-all of getting a job. Often, employers want to know what you're capable of, which comes from having tangible skills applicable to your field. He also explains to Steve why it took him six years to finish his education instead of four: because he was gaining real-world experience.Times Have Changed (18:18)Steve asks Mani about his perspective on the famous quote, “For those who can't do, teach.” As technology has changed, Mani shares that nowadays, what you can do is more important than doing things right or following the status quo. The Time For AI (24:28)Like the tech boom, the AI era allows professionals to adjust to new advancements. Mani reveals that they have been trying to use artificial intelligence to solve InfoSec problems for some time, and this will become increasingly more possible as the tech matures. Defending The Tech (28:49)Mani discusses why security leaders should support AI and champion the technology within their organizations. Since InfoSec professionals have been working with AI for years, they should inspire others to believe there is a way to interact safely with this tech.Mani's Recommendations (32:18)Steve presses Mani on his recommendations for security leaders when supporting artificial intelligence. Mani suggests that these leaders become comfortable with the tech themselves.Every InfoSec tool now has some AI faction, so security leaders should learn as much as possible about its benefits before championing it. Ultimately, CISOs must do their homework to ease their organization's worries and create the necessary safeguards.Writing A Book (41:32)Mani shares why he is writing a book and what drives this project. He was first inspired to do so by a conversation with his wife. He initially sought to write a guide for his children, which led him to write a guide for other professionals. The New CISO (48:23)To Mani, being a new CISO means dealing with a new crossroads with technology. Whether you've been in the business for a long time or are new to the role, you must adjust quickly, pivot, and learn with your team.

It's practically the theme of our show that AI is going to change almost everything about the way drugs get developed and the way healthcare gets delivered. But there's probably nobody better placed to see how this transformation is already happening than Harry's guest this week, Scott Penberthy. Scott works at Google Cloud, where he's the director of Applied AI in the Office of the CTO. He and his team work with Google's big corporate customers, including a variety of customers in healthcare and pharmaceutical R&D, to help them solve business problems that require large-scale computing and deep learning. Scott compares Google's cloud computing capabilities to a racecar that can be adapted to any type of race—whether that's a customer like Ginkgo Bioworks that leans on computation to reprogram bacterial cells to pump out pharmaceuticals and other products, or a giant health network like Anthem that uses AI to deliver personalized services to members. Because Scott helps set up these partnerships, and because he gets the first look at the Google's emerging products and services, he has a unique picture of how computing is changing the everyday practice of doing R&D and running a healthcare company. As he himself puts it, he's in the catbird seat. So listen along as Scott and Harry geek out about how far things have come in AI's transformation of healthcare, and how much more is just around the corner.
