Mary Phillips is the owner of Phillips Window Workroom, a custom drapery and soft home furnishings workroom in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Mary has been in the industry for over 40 years, first starting with upholstery with her Sister-In-Law, creating relationships with clients and vendors and then going off on her own out of the house. In 2003, Mary found a location in Chadds Ford and moved out of the house and the rest has been history! Mary has three children with her husband, Mike, a sweet dog Ruby and a huge loving family that loves spending time together and going on vacations to the beach or hanging by the pool. Callye is 26 years old and is Mary's daughter. She grew up in and out of the workroom. When Callye was 6, Mary moved out of the house. Through the years, Callye always appreciated that her Mom was able to come to all her sporting events, and could be there when she needed her since her Mom was her own boss. After going to West Chester University, and finishing right in the pandemic in May 2020, Callye didn't quite have a game plan. She spent a year and a half nannying before deciding to join the PWW team, and just celebrated three years with them. Callye enjoys the creative process, working with customers and designers and seeing their beautiful custom work come to life. Outside of the workroom, Callye coaches volleyball and still plays, (has a boyfriend), and loves spending time with family & friends and her three beautiful nephews! (Soon to be 4). We all have stress in our lives, whether physical, chemical, emotional, or microbial, and how we deal with that stress makes a huge difference in how our bodies respond. A lot of what we see with thyroid physiology is an adaptive response to some type of excessive stress response.Getting well is not about how many supplements you take; it's about finding a balanced approach to diet, nutrition, sleep, respiration, and exercise. We can support thyroid recovery by identifying and reducing the underlying stressors and addressing the foundational elements of good health.Today, I'm excited to discuss thyroid physiology with Dr. Eric Balcavage. Dr. Eric Balcavage is the owner and founder of Rejuvagen, a functional medicine clinic in Chadds Ford, PA, and a nationally recognized speaker and educator on various health-related topics, including thyroid physiology, bile physiology, detoxification, oxidative stress, methylation, and chronic illness. In this conversation, Dr. Eric and I discuss his journey into functional medicine, his perspective on thyroid health, the importance of identifying and addressing underlying stressors, limitations of the allopathic approach to treating thyroid disorders, Dr. Eric's approach to thyroid hormone testing, the role of breathing and carbon dioxide in oxygenation, why we must look at lab markers in a bigger context, and more. You are showing all signs of Hypothyroidism and yet your lab work and especially your thyroid numbers are all normal. Is that even possible? It is indeed very possible and it's more prevalent than we think says Dr. Eric Balcavage. He chalks it all up to a condition called Cellular Hypothyroidism. Cellular Hypothyroidism occurs when our cells fail to act on and absorb the normal levels of Thyroid Hormones produced by the body. The process of making the Thyroid gland is a complex one with so many steps and interfaces between the trigger from the hypothalamus and the final synthesis of T3 hormones by our cells. The present conventional approach to thyroid is a glandular one where all thyroid related symptoms and disorders are attributed to the malfunctioning of the thyroid gland with little or no regard for the processes that happen at the cellular level. Further the treatment for thyroid disorders is a fragmented one with so much emphasis on replacement thyroid hormones, supplements, rigid diets etc that what is lost in translation is the redressal of the root causes of the symptoms that we are experiencing. How can we better handle the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid conditions? That's the central theme of Dr. Balcavage's book - The Thyroid Debacle. Watch this video to learn more. In this podcast we discuss,Cellular hypothyroidism vs Glandular HypothyroidismIssues with the conventional approach for diagnosing and tackling hypothyroidism.Reasons for cellular hypothyroidism. In this week's episode, we have with us Dr. Eric Balcavage, the co-author of The Thyroid Debacle, host of the Thyroid Answers podcast, and the owner and founder of Rejuvagan, a functional medicine clinic in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Together we talk about what's wrong with the western Medicine approach to thyroid care, and how we as practitioners can do things differently from a Functional perspective. IN THIS EPISODE: Why Is The book called “The Thyroid Debacle” There are countless clients who struggle from chronic hypothyroid signs and symptoms who are told that they don't have a problem with their thyroid. At the same time, there are also those who get diagnosed with hypothyroidism and get medications and improved lab numbers, but still struggle with hypothyroid signs and symptoms. These people continue to suffer because they are told they can't have thyroid problems because their labs are normal. The Correlation Between People on Hypothyroidism Medication and Risk Of Cancer Hypothyroid clients who have “sick cells” are given T4. In this situation, the metabolism of the sick cells can increase, causing the precancerous or cancerous cells to replicate and lead to cancer. Let me know in the comments below! In this episode: What does it mean for your thyroid to not be working the way that it should? What can cause a cell to perceive danger and affect its function? The difference between the body having dysfunction vs. creating an adaptive response Dr. Balcavage's opinion on having Hashimoto's- is it different than having any other thyroid problems? The elephant in the room- why should you even care about your thyroid if you're having skin issues?? FREE things to do to reduce stress responses in your body which affect the thyroid and skin health Finally...Which diet is best? (It's probably not what you think!) Quotes “If we have a population that's about 50% overweight or obese and if about 50% of the population has some type of blood sugar regulation issues going on, then the number of people that struggle with problems with thyroid signal physiology and tissue or cellular hypothyroidism is probably closer to 50 or 60%." [05:17] "What's the biggest organ to dump stuff out if you have a bad gut, bad liver, and bad gallbladder? Skin is one of the best places to dump it out. For those unfamiliar with the Chadds Ford area, it is a richly historical town right along the Delaware border. There is a place called Cossart Road, which has been nicknamed “Devil's Road.” It's a narrow and winding road where the trees actually lean away from it. Some people say that the devil himself, in a fit of rage, let out an ear piercing scream down the road one night and from then on the trees grew away from it. Listen as Grace tells the story behind this creepy road. Sources and photos at kccpod.com.
Dom welcomes Kathleen Carmody to the Dom Giordano Program. Kathleen is a parent in the Unionsville-Chadds Ford School District, who has been speaking out as the district tries to rewrite Pennsylvania law centered on Coronavirus. In a decision made by the school, administrators decided to strike language from their vaccine exemption guidance as set forth by the State, with parents up in arms over the decision which they argue is both illegal and immoral. Carmody suggests that administrators are looking to infringe on the rights of parents in the district, trying to take something that's a given and instead forcing parents to jump through hoops to access their rights. Patton Middle School in the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District, with the counselor telling a teacher about a student's preferred pronouns, also writing that it may be best to hide this from the student's parents. Giordano tells that this is one of many instances of this mindset of hiding gender ideology from parents, with Dr. Fishbein telling how deep this goes. In addition, the counselor and teacher agree to encourage the student, who came out as ‘pansexual' during a recent assignment, to launch a Middle School version of Unionville High School's ‘Gender Sexuality Alliance' club. Moving right along this week the gals chat about a maternal line this week. The Frame lineage from Lanark, Scotland to smack dab in the middle of the Battle of the Brandywine near Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Our Margaret Frame is a 5th GGrandmother and was born that same year.
Andrew Stwart, Director of Marketing for the The Brandywine River Museum of Art and Brandywine Conservancy discussed the reopening of the museum after severe flooding from Hurricane Ida. We discussed the history of the Chadds Ford properties, the founding of the conservancy by concerned neighbors in 1969 when industrial development threatened the area, not just its plants and wildlife, but also the water table that provides drinking water for the city of Wilmington. Today, the Conservancy holds more than 483 conservation easements and has protected more than 64,500 acres from development in Chester and Delaware counties, Pennsylvania, and in New Castle County, Delaware. It's a natural home for native plants and birds and shellfish. Open to members for hiking and outdoor enjoyment, it works with local governments and agencies to permanently protect and conserve natural, cultural and scenic resources. The museum was founded in 1971 through a gift of NC Wyeth paintings by Betsy Wyeth. Today the Brandywine River Museum of Art features the art of the Brandywine region, American illustration, still life and landscape painting, and the work of the Wyeth family, with works of NC, Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, as well as Horace Pippen – another local artist – and Howard Pyle, Gilbert Stuart, Benjamin West, and many more. In addition to the galleries, the museum owns and shows the studios of NC and Andrew Wyeth and delivers special programs and children's offerings, now available online. He discussed the devasting flooding that damaged the classrooms and offices of the museum and forced the closure of the museum for many weeks. The museum is now open, intime for its annual Christmas and holiday programs, including its enormous toy train, now on display. For hours, directions, educational programming and Conservancy/Museum membership information go to brandywine.org.
I am delighted to have Dr. Eric Balcavage back on the show with us today! He appeared on the podcast once before, in Episode 105, where he spoke about thyroid physiology and chronic illness. Due to the enormous demand, we invited him to join us on the podcast once again to talk about thyroid function. Dr. Eric is the owner and founder of Rejuvagen, a functional medicine clinic in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. He is also the co-host of Thyroid Answers Podcast, where he focuses on answering the pressing questions of those suffering from chronic hypothyroidism symptoms. He recently co-authored a book called Thyroid Debacle. In this episode, Dr. Eric and I take a deeper dive into thyroid physiology, bile physiology, detoxification, and chronic illnesses. We talk about the signs and symptoms of subclinical hypothyroidism, fat malabsorption, and the use of synthetic versus non-synthetic thyroid medications. We also discuss why people can have lab values suggestive of them being persistently hypothyroid despite their use of escalating doses of medications. Stay tuned today to learn what stops the thyroid from functioning optimally and find out what you can do to maintain a healthier thyroid. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: The physiology of the thyroid. Some things that could impact the conversion from inactive to active thyroid hormone. Seed oils, and the association between thyroid physiology, thyroid glands, and cells. Why is it possible to have hypothyroid or hyperthyroid signs and symptoms when there is nothing wrong with the thyroid gland? Why forcing extra thyroid hormone into the bloodstream does not mean that you will optimize the cell function. Why does lab work have to be properly evaluated and interpreted? The last point at which hypothyroidism could be reversed. The use of synthetic thyroid medications versus non-synthetic medications. Is it normal to have insomnia after changing your thyroid medication? The connection between HDL and fat malabsorption. Thyroiditis and Hashimoto's. Dr. Eric shares his take on how iodine relates to thyroid function. Why do people tend to feel cold when they have an underactive thyroid? Intermittent fasting for perimenopausal and menopausal women with an underactive thyroid. Peter Ralston is world renowned photographer whose work I have admired for the 30 years I've known him. Peter and I have a wonderful conversation about his idyllic upbringing in rural Pennsylvania as the fortunate neighbor of the great 20th Century painter Andrew Wyeth and his equally creative and influential wife, Betsy. We talk about how they demanded he come with them to the coast of Maine as a young man--already a dedicated, fledgling photographer--and how that one act changed the entire trajectory of his life. Peter talks openly and honestly about his challenges after a life-threatening and life-altering brain aneurysm and it's long-term complications, and what it took for him to finally make it back to "making pictures." Peter's story is inspiring and heartfelt. He is a true creative.Peter grew up in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, worked for a decade as a freelance photojournalist, and then began photographing the coast of Maine in 1978, drawn especially to the working communities that defined the coasts enduring character. His work has been reproduced in many books and magazines featured repeatedly on network television and has been exhibited in galleries, collections and museums throughout the United States and abroad. In 2003, Peter was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at Colby College for his photography, as well as his role as co-founder (with Philip Conkling) of the Island Institute. Although as a young man, Ralston studied very briefly under Ansel Adams, he acknowledges the greater artistic influence of a lifetime of association with Andrew Wyeth, a close friend and incisive mentor. Peter and his wife, Terri, opened the Ralston Gallery in Rockport, Maine, in 2011, selling his photographs as well as the work of his lifelong friends, Andrew and Jamie Wyeth. He is currently working on a major book about the coast of Maine. www.ralstongallery.com

Jennifer read a quote in a magazine while on a flight to Orlando, Florida…and now we have an episode called “Art of Adventure.” Inspiration strikes at 35,000 feet. In tonight's show Jennifer does something a real podcaster probably wouldn't bother to try: explore early Twentieth Century illustrations in an audio-only radio show. It's a subject that is all wrong for our format, but off we go nonetheless. The quote that suggested tonight's topic was from Golden Age Illustrator N.C. Wyeth, as he described his studio in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania: “This is the little corner of the world wherein I shall work out my destiny.” Jennifer already knew of Wyeth and his famous son Andrew, but she wanted to know more about this special place where someone's destiny could be forged. Research began almost immediately, which led her down a path through the Golden Age of Illustration, the famous Brandywine School, the dreamy landscape of Chadds Ford, and, of course, the fabulous illustrations of pirates, knights, and other adventurers. All of this—and more!—is packed into tonight's show. When you tune in, be sure to bring your imagination with you. The Andrew and Betsy Wyeth Collection. © 2020 Andrew Wyeth/Artists Rights Society (ARS) Walt Anderson speaks about making tempera paint for Andrew Wyeth. “Walter was my connection to Maine,” Wyeth said to a reporter a few days after Anderson died in 1987. “Out of him came Christina and all the others. But Walter was not a character to me. He was my own age.” Throughout his life, the people and landscape of midcoast Maine had a profound influence on Andrew Wyeth. Although he was born in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, he spent every summer in Maine until his death in 2009. During those summers Andrew developed a lifelong friendship with Walt Anderson, son of the cook at the hotel, and they became inseparable. Andrew's earliest works were watercolors of the very places that he and Walt discovered. These watercolors were colorful depictions of landscape and weather patterns along the coast in summer.
