In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Heather Stone, a leading functional medicine practitioner with over 20 years of experience,  to unpack why so many thyroid issues go undiagnosed or mismanaged. We go beyond the standard TSH lab test to explore the real drivers of thyroid dysfunction — from gut imbalances and hormone shifts to environmental triggers often overlooked in conventional care. You'll hear why medication alone rarely resolves symptoms long term, and why a precision-based, root-cause approach is essential for lasting healing. We dive deep into Hashimoto's, autoimmune flare-ups, and the exact moments in life when women are most vulnerable to thyroid breakdown — like postpartum and menopause. If you've ever been told “your labs look normal” but you still feel off, this episode is for you. It's time to move from symptom management to root cause resolution. Key Takeaways: Identify Underlying Causes: Healing thyroid dysfunction requires looking beyond hormone prescriptions to address immune, gut, adrenal, and environmental triggers. Comprehensive Testing: Traditional TSH testing is inadequate alone; a full thyroid panel and additional health markers are crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Lifestyle Integration: Dietary changes, particularly eliminating gluten and dairy, and stabilizing blood sugar are pivotal for improving thyroid function and overall health. Functional vs. Traditional Medicine: Functional medicine offers a holistic approach that focuses on the root causes of symptoms rather than managing them with medications. Women's Health Concerns: Women are more susceptible to thyroid issues due to hormonal fluctuations and stress, necessitating tailored approaches to diagnosis and care.   More About Dr. Heather Stone, DC: Dr. Heather Stone, DC is one of the top functional medicine practitioners in the world. Most standard Thyroid panels do NOT test enough metrics to help you make the best decisions around your health. If you've only tested 1-3 metrics - usually TSH, T3, and T4 - then this isn't enough information to decide to go on medications. You need a bigger picture, mainly because the vast majority of Thyroid issues are actually being caused by something else underlying anyway. In this episode I discuss the full Thyroid panel that you need tested, and what the results mean.

We can learn a lot by looking at the levels and the ratio of the main thyroid hormones tested these days, T3 and T4. When both are low, the most common cause is Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which occurs when the immune system damages the thyroid gland. However, if T3 is low and T4 is within the normal or optimal range, there are several factors we need to explore.Today, I'm sharing the main causes of low T3 levels in the presence of normal T4 levels. In this episode, you'll learn about:- Main thyroid hormones that are tested- The most common causes of low T3 and T4- What's usually below low T3 alongside normal T4 levels- Case study of my recent Graves' patient who started with elevated levels - Optimal thyroid hormone levels I aim for with my patients- Factors that can cause a conversion of T4 to T3- The role of the liver and gut in the conversion of T4 to T3- Inflammation as a factor in thyroid disease- What you need to know about nutrient deficiencies and thyroid hormonesAs always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode! To learn more, visit the show notes at https://savemythyroid.com/podcast/causes-of-low-t3/.Do You Want Help Saving Your Thyroid? We all have stress in our lives, whether physical, chemical, emotional, or microbial, and how we deal with that stress makes a huge difference in how our bodies respond. A lot of what we see with thyroid physiology is an adaptive response to some type of excessive stress response.Getting well is not about how many supplements you take; it's about finding a balanced approach to diet, nutrition, sleep, respiration, and exercise. We can support thyroid recovery by identifying and reducing the underlying stressors and addressing the foundational elements of good health.Today, I'm excited to discuss thyroid physiology with Dr. Eric Balcavage. Dr. Eric Balcavage is the owner and founder of Rejuvagen, a functional medicine clinic in Chadds Ford, PA, and a nationally recognized speaker and educator on various health-related topics, including thyroid physiology, bile physiology, detoxification, oxidative stress, methylation, and chronic illness. In this conversation, Dr. Eric and I discuss his journey into functional medicine, his perspective on thyroid health, the importance of identifying and addressing underlying stressors, limitations of the allopathic approach to treating thyroid disorders, Dr. Eric's approach to thyroid hormone testing, the role of breathing and carbon dioxide in oxygenation, why we must look at lab markers in a bigger context, and more. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:    Salman: Hello! Thank you for your post on Alzheimer early detection. Can you please share the info on where I can do the Alzheimer early detection blood test that you referred to?    Sabrina: Hi doctor Cabral. Does having more fat on your belly also mean that you have more visceral fat? I'm lean, working out regularly and eat a very clean plant-based diet, but still have a lot of belly fat. I know this is due to my slightly slower thyroid and lower female hormones (I'm 45), but I'm still concerned about this. Thanks so much for your answer!   Summer: I have a history of endometriosis, many ruptured ovarian cysts, two ectopic pregnancies, lots of internal bleeding & peritonitis. Fortunately I found natural health & reversed many of my dis-eases including PCOS, but not before destroying my chances for natural pregnancy. Each case involved internal bleeding & inflammation leaving painful adhesions throughout my abdominal cavity. A lot have been removed during other gynecological surgeries, but I know they left a couple on my liver. I do castor oil, manual manipulation on my liver & digestive tract hoping to break them up.I know proteolytic enzymes are key & I did get some & intend to work at it from that angle as well. Will adhesions on the liver affect detox efficiency? Will all that scar tissue jam up the lymphatic system in general?Thx!   Susy: Hi Dr Cabral, I've heard you can take redox signaling molecules as a supplement. What is your opinion on that? Is it true? Does it have side affects? Or does it really speed up healing process in the body?   Deonna: Hi Dr. Cabral, thanks for all you do! I am following you and have found much help and hope on my health journey. My question today concerns my 32 year old son. He is getting painful mouth ulcers and his palms and feet get spots. All he has been able to come up with is mouth, hand and foot disease. However, this happens every few months. What would your you suggest?   Ann: Hi Dr Cabral- THANK YOU for doing so much to help so many :) I have been on Synthroid for over 30 years. I would like to work on getting to the root cause of why my thyroid is low. I understand that running free T4 and T3 is important , besides TSH, but can I run these while on Synthroid and get accurate information? How do I go about understanding the root cause without going off the medication first? Thank you again :)   Thank you for tuning into today's Cabral HouseCall and be sure to check back tomorrow where we answer more of our community's questions!    - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/2759 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? This week on ReInvent Healthcare, I go over the biggest mistakes that doctors make when they test the thyroid. I also go over other types of tests that can be done in order to get to the root cause of clients' dysfunctions. IN THIS EPISODE:Reliance on TSH as the Sole IndicatorDoctors often rely solely on testing Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels to diagnose thyroid dysfunction. However, TSH levels might fall within the medically accepted "normal" range, even when a patient exhibits clear symptoms of thyroid dysfunction like dry skin, constipation, high cholesterol, depression, exhaustion, and weight issues. This over-reliance on TSH can lead to misdiagnosis or the dismissal of thyroid-related problems. Incomplete Testing and Ignoring SymptomsNot considering a comprehensive thyroid panel. While TSH is important, it should be complemented with tests for total T4, free T4, and free T3 levels. Additionally, antibodies such as thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and antithyroid globulin (TgAB) should be tested to identify autoimmune thyroid conditions. Doctors often ignore a patient's symptoms when conventional tests come back within the "normal" range, rather than considering whether the tests themselves might be inadequate or if other underlying issues are present.Neglecting Receptor Function and Root CausesDoctors frequently overlook the importance of receptors that allow thyroid hormones to enter cells and take action. Factors like high homocysteine levels, low vitamin A, stress-induced cortisol imbalances, and toxic exposures can disrupt receptor function and the effectiveness of thyroid hormones. Rather than addressing these root causes, patients are often prescribed medications for individual symptoms without considering the thyroid's underlying dysfunction.References:Get our FREE Guide to Taking a Detailed Health History that gets you to root causes.Access Additional Resources for Practitioners ready to improve clinical outcomes through our Nutritional Endocrinology Practitioner Training. They weren't. She had Hashimoto's. As a self-confessed high-achiever, Lyn put her self motivation to work and started reading everything she could get her hands on and taking her health in her own hands. The first 18 months for Lyn were the hardest as she gradually started to implement changes she was learning about in her research and working with her thyroid support team (function medicine practitioner and naturopath). 12 years on and Lyn has experienced a dramatic shift in how she feels. The most commonly tested thyroid marker is TSH, or Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone. TSH is an important indicator of thyroid function, but it is hard to get a full, clear picture from this single biomarker. So today, we go over what TSH is, it’s function, and why it is important. We also make a case for including other biomarkers, along with TSH, if a thyroid condition is suspected. Don’t forget! She began working at the Potter Park Zoo as a summer student under Dr. Ronan Eustace, the staff veterinarian and Director of Animal Health at Potter Park Zoo (PPZ), where she conducted a research project and zoo medical cases. She has been featured on The Sci-Files before for her research at PPZ with Doppsee, but this episode focuses on her research with the Red Pandas at PPZ.Thyroid dysfunction has been reported in captive red pandas, however, there has been little research on the topic. The research project Bridget worked on validates a hormone test in red pandas that measure thyroid-stimulating hormones and can help to identify thyroid dysfunction. By having a valid test, thyroid dysfunction can be identified and further studied in red pandas. To find out more about PPZ, ways that you can support the red pandas and the other animals at PPZ, you can visit their website. If you're interested in talking about your MSU research on the radio or nominating a student, please email Chelsie and Danny at scifiles@impact89fm.org. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started!    Anonymous: Hi Dr Cabral I read a post on the fb detox group regarding the 21 day detox. This persons concern was after the 21 day detox it released heavy metals which seeped into the blood stream, and as this person detox pathways were not functioning due to MTHFR, this person stated feeling a whole lot worse and affecting the thyroid. My question is what would you suggest for someone who has this sort of reaction after a detox? And dealing with detox pathways Many thanks Natalie: Hi Dr. Cabral: Thank you for all you do to help people. My spouse seems to have proteinuria. He has been seen by a nephrologist who confirms that there seems to no explanation for the protein found in his urine, so he suspects benign microscopic changes to the kidney may be causing this. That is on the one hand a relief, but on the other frustrating because until about a year or two ago, he NEVER had foam or bubbles in his urine so he KNOWS there something is not "normal" in his body. Ironically, since we were cleared by the nephrologist we commenced your detox and the bubbles in his urine have actually increased. We are frustrated, confused and feeling rather hopeless. If you could help us figure out where to go from here we would be so grateful. My spouse is a 37 year old male, plays hockey twice a week, has never smoked in his life and eats a clean plant based diet. He has also been doing TCM acupuncture and teas to strengthen his kidneys but the bubbles in the urine persist. Thank you in advance for your compassion and determination to help people like my spouse who wants to help themselves but are at a loss now as to how. Joanna: Hey there Dr Cabral My question is what is the difference with the adrenal hormone and adrenal thyroid hormone lab compared to the dutch test? The dutch test i believe looks at different forms of estrogen and different pathways etc i hear its a little more extensive what are your thoughts? Many thanks Joanna Jamie: Belated Happy New Year and thank you again for all you do - may 2020 be another amazing year for you and the Team. Quick question, recently (around new years eve) i started waking up and my eyes would be mildly stinging each morning, there is a little dried build up around them but not much when i wake up. It takes about an hour for my eyes to stop the symptoms in the morning but it is making it morning difficult to wake up early in the morning. I definitely had a cheat meal too many over christmas and wonder if this is the result. I started the 3 week detox on 5th Jan so am 1 week in now. Oura ring telling me sleep is generally good this last week but symptoms are still there. I have 2 more weeks to go on detox so excited by that but thought i would reach out as the sore eyes are frustrating my morning routine! thanks again for all you do and best wishes to you and your family. Julie: I have been recommended this detox by a friend. I have Crohn’s / Colitis and wondered if it is suitable? I currently have infusions and take azathioprine tablets for treatment. Is it ok to do the detox while on these medications? Also which would you suggest? Thanks Julie Judy: Hello. I recently heard on a podcast that you were at a convention in Vegas. I frequently have conferences in Vegas along the strip, and I was curious where and what did you eat to stay healthy during this time where people are surrounded by lots of unhealthy options? Hypothyroidism is the most common thyroid problem and the autoimmune form, Hashimoto’s disease, is the most common form of all. We know that 28 million individuals in the US alone are affected, and it's suspected that about 50% more are affected, have symptoms, and remain undiagnosed. Yet many doctors seem reluctant to do an adequate work-up of thyroid function. Some even refuse to give the tests that would help demystify whether you have hypothyroidism or another thyroid problem. This seems strange given how common thyroid problems are, and yet they are quite willing to freely prescribe antidepressants, when it's estimated that 15% of people on an antidepressant are depressed due to a hypothyroidism - which hasn't been diagnosed in them! Sadly, so many women are left believing that their symptoms of depression, fatigue, joint aches, weakness, weight gain and more are all in their head! Perhaps this has even happened to you. There are 6 key tests that can unlock the mystery of your thyroid function and are what your doctor should be looking at. In this encore presentation of Natural MD Radio I’m talking about what thyroid labs I run to diagnose patients and what labs you should ask for if you suspect you might have a thyroid problem Show notes at avivaromm.com/118

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Getting accurate thyroid lab tests is incredibly important for thyroid patients. And what you may not realize is that there are a lot of rules which should be followed if you want to get accurate thyroid lab test results. Why would you care? Well, for starters, if you don't get accurate results then your treatment will be off. Why do you think so many thyroid patients continue to suffer from hypothyroid symptoms despite having normal thyroid lab tests? Part of this problem is simply due to the fact that they are getting inaccurate tests which lead them down the wrong path. What's the solution? To ensure that you are following thyroid lab testing best practices so you can ensure that your lab tests are ACCURATE. Before you get your thyroid labs tested you should ensure that you are following these guidelines: #1. Get the full thyroid lab panel. - The full set of thyroid lab tests includes TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3, thyroid antibodies, SHBG, and cortisol. These tests should be ordered at least the first time you get your labs tested (but are not always required on each subsequent lab test). #2. Check your labs at 8:00am. - Your thyroid function fluctuates throughout the day and reaches its peak first thing in the morning. You want to test during this time to see how well it is working. #3. Check your thyroid lab tests in the fasted state. - Consuming food can impact your metabolism and therefore your thyroid. You also want to check other lab tests at the same time and they require a fasted state. #4. Check your labs BEFORE taking your thyroid medication. - You want to check your thyroid lab tests around 23-24 hours AFTER you take your thyroid medication. #5. Don't test your thyroid on days 10-20 of your menstrual cycle. These are days in which your progesterone is high which can impact your thyroid lab test results. #6. Avoid taking Biotin PRIOR to your lab tests. - Biotin can interfere with the thyroid lab testing assay and make your lab tests less accurate and make you look more hyperthyroid.

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started!    Toniy: What are your thoughts on Wim Hof breathing? Wim Hof climbed Mt. Everet in shorts, ran marathons in Arctic Cricles / Sahara Desert, and did 2 hours in a full ice bath. The craziest part is, he's not an anomaly he's trained people around the world to do the same with some simple breathwork. While I know you don't like spiking sympathetic nervous system for vata prone people, there are reports of autoimmune conditions being suppressed or reversed through breath work and controlling their RESPONSE to cold exposure and their nervous system. If I'm vata, but can be super present with ice baths and the like, can Wim Hof Breathing & Cold be good for me? Allison: What are your thoughts on those who've had exposure to vitamin A toxicity from synthetic retinoids i.e. Accutane, and are now possibly more susceptible to vitamin A causing issues in the future? Some propose to NEVER take vitamin A again from any supplement. Lisbeth: Hi. We're from Norway. We have a daughter 23 years who has been ill from SIBO and Candida for three years. We are totally worn out. We have tried so many things. We don't know the real root cause. My daughter has sibo test which shows 13 in methane. Zero in hydrogen. She has chronic candida in the vagina. White blister in mouth. Chronic constipation. Extreme bloating after every meal. Joint pain and headache. she also has to pee all the time. Fatigue. Panic attack. We have tried lowfoodmap, lowcarb diet, fecal transplant, soilbased probiotic etc. Nothing helps And I'm so exhausted from trying to understand all this diet I read on the internet. They are difficult to follow because all are in English and many thing is explained so different from the Norwegian food / recipe / wight We have thousands of supplements here at home. We spent $ 30,000 last 3 years trying to treat our daughters gut. How can you help us? My greatest wish in the world had been to come somewhere where someone showed us how to eat. How to cook. What supplements to take. And I wish we could stay in a place / hospital for a month until we had learned what we needed. As a mother, I am totally worn out. Best regards Lisbeth  Casey: What are some ways to heal hip impingement? Taylor: Hi Dr Cabral! I was wondering if you ever reviewed any on the go water filters such as Gopro or life straw ? I am constantly refilling my water bottle at work with our water filter here; however, I don't think it is very good and often I have to remind our facilities to get maintenance on it. I am worried I am drinking contaminated water. I recently got OAT test results back and it shows alot of mold markers elevated as well as bacteria/cdif so I am trying to investigate if I am being exposed to any mold whether home/work. I also did HTMA and had some elevated plastic so I really want to avoid plastic water bottles. If you could let me know if you had any recommendations to make sure work water is safe that would be great!! Thanks Dave: Hello, love your podcast. My niece has thyroid problems and autoimmune hemolytic anemia. Traditional medicine is not working. Can you recommend any lab tests to get started with your program? Thank You! Dave Karen: Hiya, Thank you for all that you do. I have recently started my son on the Children's CBO protocol. I have noticed on the days where I made a bone broth and added it to soups it affected his digestion. For example there would be floating oil on top of the water the next day, however his stools still sink, however they are sometimes more mustard in colour. It took me a while to realize this but it is definitely the bone broth. This is deeply concerning to me. My partner believes my son had this reaction because we rarely eat meat and even then, never meat fat and he is unaccustomed to digesting it.I rather, am worried it is something more sinister like issues with this bile and / or liver. Would you please be able to shed some light on issues digesting fat? Or once the candida is gone, will he be able to process fats better? I am unsure of the connection between candida and fats if there are any. Thank you so much for your response in advance. :)   Thank you for tuning into this weekend’s Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right! - - - Show Notes & Resources:  http://StephenCabral.com/1367 - - - Dr. Cabral's New Book, The Rain Barrel Effect https://amzn.to/2H0W7Ge - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: http://CabralSupportGroup.com - - -   Dr. Cabral’s Most Popular Supplements: > “The Dr. Cabral Daily Protocol” (This is what Dr. Cabral does every day!) - - - > Dr. Cabral Detox  (The fastest way to get well, lose weight, and feel great!) - - - > Daily Nutritional Support Shake  (#1 “All-in-One recommendation in my practice) - - - > Daily Fruit & Vegetables Blend  (22 organic fruit & vegetables “greens powder”) - - - > CBD Oil  (Full-spectrum, 3rd part-tested & organically grown) - - - > Candida/Bacterial Overgrowth, Leaky Gut, Parasite & Speciality Supplement Packages - - - > See All Supplements: https://equilibriumnutrition.com/collections/supplements  - - -   Dr. Cabral’s Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Organic Acids Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Thyroid + Adrenal + Hormone Test  (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Adrenal + Hormone Test (Run your adrenal & hormone levels) - - - > Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Omega-3 Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - > Stool Test (Use this test to uncover any bacterial, h. Healthy Living With Angela Busby - Your Health, Nutrition and Wellness Resource

In this short and sweet episode Angela chats with us about Urinary Iodine Loading testing, one of her favourite tests she uses in clinic when she suspects someone's thyroid may not be functioning 100%. Iodine is essential for proper thyroid function. Many GP's will test TSH on a blood test and if this is normal move on. However as a Naturopath Angela is aware there is more to the story than that and will dig a bit further with some additional blood tests alongside this wonderfully simple and informative Urinary Iodine Loading Test. Thyroid imbalance, now an epidemic, is the most misdiagnosed of all medical conditions. You might well have an easily-treated thyroid problem, but instead be diagnosed with hard-to-treat chronic fatigue syndrome, anemia, irritable bowel, estrogen imbalance, high cholesterol, chronic sinusitis, arthritis, or even clinical depression. With tens of millions of thyroid cases, this kind of misdiagnosis happens thousands of times every day. Protect yourself - Insist on better thyroid testing.
