Have you ever felt overwhelmed by ongoing, mysterious symptoms, only to be told your condition doesn't fit a neat diagnosis? If you're someone grappling with chronic illness, you've probably experienced the frustration of being treated as just another case of "chronic fatigue" or "fibromyalgia." But what if I told you that there's more going on beneath the surface, and that your body's multiple systems are involved in ways conventional medicine may not fully understand? That's what today's episode is all about. We're diving into the root causes behind chronic illness.  If you're tired of searching for answers and ready to explore the complex web of infections, toxins, immune dysregulation, and even trauma that might be contributing to your symptoms, you're in the right place. Key Points Why Chronic Illness Is Often Misunderstood Modern medicine frequently approaches illness with a one-diagnosis-fits-all mindset. Chronic illnesses like Lyme, fibromyalgia, and long COVID involve multiple systems and causes. Treating these conditions requires more than a single treatment plan. Five Root Causes of Chronic Illness We explain the five major causes contributing to chronic illness: infections, toxins, structural issues, diet, and lifestyle (including trauma). These are not isolated factors but interact to create a unique health profile for each person. Why Inflammation Is Not Always Temporary Inflammation is meant to be a short-term response, but in many chronic illnesses, it becomes an ongoing issue, causing more harm than healing. This continuous inflammation is a hallmark of conditions like MCAS. The Cell Danger Response and Genetic Factors Chronic illness often involves what's called the "Cell Danger Response," where the body gets stuck in a protective state due to past trauma or exposure to toxins. Dr. Naviaux's research reveals that different people with the same diagnosis may have entirely different biochemical and genetic pathways leading to their symptoms. Chronic illnesses are far more complex than many are led to believe. Understanding that there's no one-size-fits-all solution is the first step toward healing. Each person's chronic illness journey is unique, with multiple root causes and complex triggers at play. By identifying these factors and addressing them holistically, we can begin to reverse the immune dysregulation that drives inflammation and worsens symptoms. So, if you're tired of quick fixes that don't work and want to address your chronic illness at its core, this episode is for you. Let's get to the root of your health challenges together, and find lasting solutions that are as unique as you are. Stress and trauma will always hold power over you and your overall health—unless you face the problem at the cellular level. This week, I'm joined by Dr. Susan Blum, a board-certified physician specializing in preventative medicine, functional medicine, and integrative medicine. We sat down to discuss the critical role of mitochondria on your health, the impact of environmental toxins, infections, and trauma on these cellular powerhouses, and integrative approaches to healing.  In this episode, you'll discover: What Exactly Are Mitochondria: As vital organelles found in cells—most notably in the brain, muscles, and heart—mitochondria are "the little furnace inside every cell that makes your energy called ATP," describes Dr. Blum.  The Link Between Trauma and Mitochondrial Health: Stress and trauma can cause the cell to enter the cell danger response, says Dr. Blum. This, in turn, damages the mitochondria by blocking their ability to function properly. This can result in brain fog, fatigue, and even chronic illness. How to Treat the Root Cause: Dr. Blum stresses the importance of “cleaning up your environment“ as your first step, which can include testing your home for health-disrupting mold or figuring out what triggers you physically and emotionally. Next steps may include going to therapy, filtering your water, and prioritizing deep, restorative sleep since "your mitochondria repair at night," says Dr. Blum.  The Healing Power of Ketamine: Under the supervision of a trained professional, IV ketamine can safely take the healing process to the next level when paired with therapy. "Most people's experience is there's this deep meditation space of quiet behind their thoughts without needing to meditate almost," shares Dr. Blum. 02:13 Dr. Blum's Journey into Functional Medicine 04:06 The Impact of Trauma and Stress 17:38 The Role of Mitochondria in Health 21:26 Cell Danger Response and Healing 31:18 Introduction to Mitochondrial Damage and Testing 31:25 Understanding the MitoSwab Test 33:11 Targeted Mitochondrial Therapies 42:37 Emotional Wellness and Ketamine Therapy 56:15 Preventative Measures for Mitochondrial Health Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Dr. Blum: Website: https://blumcenterforhealth.com Emotional Wellness Program: https://blumcenterforhealth.com/emotional-wellness-program/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drsusanblum/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/blumcenterforhealth YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/drsusanblum

Ever wondered what happens when your cells feel threatened? Spoiler alert: they don't hide under the bed. Instead, they trigger CDR! Nic and Steve explain what CDR is and what sets it off, like the biological equivalent of setting off your car alarm because a leaf fell on it. They'll also unravel the dramatic saga of mitochondria during CDR stages, and how it's like your cell's version of a soap opera. Tune in to listen to why your cells might just be the most overreactive part of you and how you can treat and manage CDR. The cell danger response (CDR) is a new theory for chronic illnesse that has gotten a lot of  attention lately in functional medicine. The CDR is part of your body's natural response to cellular threatened danger and may be triggered by biological stressors, chemical stressors, physical and/or psychological trauma.Under normal circumstances, the CDR is an important part of your healing cycle. However, when ongoing triggers become overwhelming to your body, the CDR becomes ongoing as well and increases your risk of chronic symptoms and chronic illnesses.Today we discuss what the cell danger response is, the metabolic features of the cell danger response, factors that may trigger the cell danger response and what you can do to address the cell danger response. We also cover the 3 stages of the cell danger response and how this correlates with chronic fatigue syndrome, hypothyroidism, metabolic disease, and neurological disease. If you are someone who is struggling with your health, yet you've been told everything is 'normal' and want to get to the root cause of why you feel the way you do, you can  set up a time to chat with our team HERE.Have a question you want us to answer live? Unlock the mysteries of aging and chronic disease as we navigate the compelling intersection of these conditions with inflammation, guided by the expertise of Dr. Eric Gordon. Our journey begins with the body's double-edged sword—its inflammatory response. Vital for healing yet detrimental when uncontrolled, inflammation presents a paradox in our quest for longevity. Dr. Gordon illuminates the role of mitochondria in this delicate balance, linking the cell danger response to our overall health and resilience. As we peer into the complexities of chronic illness, Dr. Gordon stresses the importance of an individual's medical history, considering both genetic and environmental factors. Addressing these persistent conditions requires more than just a one-size-fits-all solution; it calls for a tailored approach that respects each patient's unique sensitivities. We explore a variety of treatment options, from biofeedback and meditation to carefully calibrated medication plans, all while acknowledging the integral connection between our psychological state and physical health. The final leg of our conversation underscores the importance of mindset in healing chronic illness. Dr. Gordon shares his insights into the unique challenges faced by patients with long-term conditions, and the necessity of integrating hope into their therapeutic journey. The chapter concludes by highlighting the power of intravenous techniques and the significance of chronic inflammation as a biomarker for aging, offering listeners a pathway to more personalized and effective healing. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Marek Doyle. He has spent the last 17 years developing a model of individualized nutrition based on data from over 3,000 individual outcomes, 11,000 test findings, and significant utilization of the scientific literature. Marek is a functional nutritional therapist. In addition to his Academy training course for practitioners and enthusiasts in London, England, Marek offers one-on-one consultations for customers. He holds a Master of Science degree in Personalized Nutrition.  Marek has always greatly respected and fascinated with the human body. He was always driven to nutritional therapy since it is the most fundamental aspect in impacting human biochemistry, and he has spent almost two decades improving his methods. Marek has an MSc in Personalized Nutrition (CNELM/Middlesex Uni), as well as a CertHE in Nutritional Medicine, a Diploma in Allergy and Environmental Therapy (BIAET) and a Diploma in Advanced Nutrition for Optimal Health (GBF/BCMA).  His viewpoint is shaped by everything that can enable him to precisely pinpoint each person's major challenges and predict the result of any given option. It is shaped less by exact answers and more by asking the right questions, which are formed from his personal experiences, combining the mechanical knowledge taken from the scientific literature with the wisdom embedded in traditional healing systems, and by making observations gleaned from working directly with thousands of people. In this episode, Marek speaks about how our bodies can repair themselves so long as you identify the hurdles that prevent it from happening, the flaws of modern weight loss methods, the pros and cons of the ketogenic diet, how the mitochondria work under stress, and things you need to remember before going on a diet. Finding out what that obstacle is is the key to overcoming certain health issues. Once these obstacles are taken away, everything becomes much easier for an individual. These interferences aren't easy to identify or solve, which is why it is up to everybody to identify what they are. [06:28] The Flaws of Popular Weight Loss Methods Many influencers, nutritionists, and dieticians claim that energy balance is the only thing you'll need to lose body fat. Calories in and out are a big deal; however, both can change. This concept is entirely dependent on the body not changing its energy usage all day which makes it very flawed. The calorie concept is deceptive because it works short-term for weight loss but not fat loss. There is a massive difference between these two. [12:00] The Pros and Cons of the Keto Diet Two camps are relevant to this diet. The first one is the people who preach that it's a revolution, and the other is the ones who oppose it due to their belief in its health risks. There is a lot of misconception that still exists about the Keto Diet. One of the most anti-inflammatory interventions available is the Ketogenic Diet. [24:47] What the Mitochondria Does When You Are Stressed There are three different types of stress: Mental and Emotional Stress, Physical Stress, and Chemical Stress. Being under any of these stresses will cause the Mitochondria to generate a ton of oxidative stress. The only thing greater than the human body's capability to handle stress is how far you can push it until it eventually fails. Oxidative stress due to the overworking of the Mitochondria will cause certain problems in the human body. [40:44] Things You Must Consider Before Trying Certain Diets       There are many moving parts in the human body, making a perfect diet unrealistic.       Doing certain diets and fasting is fine; however, you must consider your status and other options first.       Stress, Immunocompromised bodies, your home's condition, and most importantly, your current health condition are some of the few things you need to be mindful of before starting a diet that will massively affect your body.   It's always a matter of identifying the big stressors in your life. So many people in the functional medicine world, whether it be from their past adverse  events, the pandemic, from Lyme disease, mold toxicity, from being gaslighted by doctors, or trying failed therapies, etc - - SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE SOME DEGREE OF PTSD, LIMBIC SYSTEM DYSFUNCTION, and now experience an IMBALANCED STRESS RESPONSE, DYSAUTONOMIA, and other debilitating symptoms. So, we all know about stress. There is the mental stress that we all know about, but also physical stress (too much water is a stressor, too little water is a stressor, leaky gut, injuries, etc) as well as toxic stress (mold, mercury, pesticides, etc) - - and your body responds to stress as potential DANGER - you prepare to "fight-or-flight". So, STRESS is your body's response to potential danger..... DANGER is either real or perceived - you can tell someone they should be scared and they will be, or tell them they should NOT be scared and they will NOT be......but abuse is a danger, toxins are a danger, viruses are a danger..... Your limbic system of your brain connects memories with experiences, and will "remember" these instances of danger and the stress response, and the limbic system includes regions like the amygdala (fear sensing), the hippocampus (memory), and the hypothalamus/pituitary (stress response).Repeated exposure to (or perception of) DANGER leads to limbic system dysfunction, PTSD, and an imbalanced stress response.....your body begins to treat EVERYTHING as a danger. All of this stress, true danger, and the perception of danger/stress triggers something called The Cell Danger Response, which is fascinating, I have a Youtube Video about it linked below, but your cells, your nervous system, your stress response system begins to respond to EVERYTHING AS A DANGER.HOW CAN YOU REWIRE THIS RESPONSE???This is gaining popularity in the healthcare world as an important piece to healing. It's increasingly being talked about at seminars and in practitioner circles as well as with patient stories, but there are a lot of different options, recommendations, programs, etc to choose from. In this podcast I go through 4 major "categories" you can work on for rewiring your nervous system, and within each of these categories I talk about many potential strategies, including:Stimulate Your Vagus Nerve to decrease sympathetic dominanceTENS DeviceGargling/Gagging/HummingCoffee EnemaChallenge Your AUTONOMIC INPUTSBreath workTemperature - cold plunges, contrast showersHR - HeartMath or other HRV trainingChallenge Your Visual and Sensory InputsVestibular exercises like VizStim (next podcast episode!)ChiropracticChallenge Your Psychological InputsLimbic System Retraining ProgramsNeurolinguistic programming - Gratitude/AffirmationsAll that, and more, are discussed in detail in the episode. I titled this podcast controversial just because it's important for the listener to know that just because we interview people it doesn't always mean we 100% agree with everything they have to say. I get this question often that a guest will say something on my show and then they'll question me because I've said the opposite in the past. The purpose of having guests on is to give you different opinions and then you as the listener can take this varied information and dissect it.  Now sometimes it can get confusing with all the differing opinions being thrown at you. But I think if you listen and figure out what is going to work for you, or maybe you try different things or try different approaches in this case for thyroid optimization, you'll find what resonates with you and what will work for you.  Today, my guest is the host of The Thyroid Answers Podcast, Dr. Eric Balaclavage and you know, we don't always see eye to eye on everything. He doesn't have the stance on thyroid hormone replacement that I do. He takes a totally different approach.  He's going to talk about the cell danger response. And today we're going to dive into his different methods and protocols and outlooks on thyroid hormone optimization.  We're talking about our differences in how we approach reverse T3 levels being high and how we might even approach free T3 levels being low, and we have anecdotal evidence of people that we have helped and achieved success and total optimization and reversal of their symptoms through both of our approaches. So there is no one size fits all so you have to listen and decide for yourself what's going to work for you. [1:33] The Cell Danger Response – Why The Mitochondria Get BROKEN  -       If we look at how we make energy, we're moving electrons, which we call the electron transport chain. This is the job of the mitochondria. -       In the process, there could be efficient and non-efficient. As we get older, it becomes a less efficient system. -       Several factors will influence the fluidity of making energy. -       There's a threshold of inflammation that completely shuts down the mitochondria when it is exposed to a toxic environment. -       The acid in the body creates resistance, and resistance in the body creates acid. This also translates into inflammation and stress, negatively impacting energy production. -       We need to start looking at things increasing the inflammation in our body and start to lower those. [11:00] Are You Stressed? Take Melatonin and Protect Your Mitochondria  -       Melatonin is the antioxidant that sits and prevents this Cell Danger Response to the shutdown of the mitochondria. -       You can take melatonin at night, and it's great for sleep. -       When faced with overwhelming stress, they must do more than just one thing. They can't expect just to do the ketogenic diet, and everything turns around. -       There are only two antioxidants that can enter the mitochondrial membrane: melatonin and glutathione. -       There shouldn't be any fear regarding melatonin because there's no negative feedback loop. You don't shut down your own production; it has no toxicity. [22:12]  Learn About The Locus Coeruleus aka The Blue Spot in Your Brain  -       The blue spot, known as the locus coeruleus, is in the brain's center. -       A healthy individual must be able to transfer short-term memory to long-term memory to have healthy mental, emotional, spiritual, and overall well-being. -       You want your stress level to be low during sleeping. -       When our stress hormones rise, our short-term memory becomes trapped in a vicious loop. -       Drug companies are interested in finding something that can impact locus coeruleus. -       The ability to consolidate our memories revolves around REM sleep and having low-stress hormones leading up to sleep. -       Avoiding alcohol, eating late at night, light pollution, EMF exposure, and turning wifi router off will be helpful to have good REM sleep. [30:56] The Amazing Benefits of Cold Therapy, & Why You Can Do Too Much of it -       If you are having difficulty tolerating the cold water, keep your hand out of the water. -       Most people can tolerate the suggested three minutes. It can be quite uncomfortable for some people than others. There will not likely be any damage or danger to your cells or tissues. -       In the biohacking world, cold therapy is great for having an adaptive response that the body becomes stronger and more resilient in case we have that stressor comes in the future. -       If you do cold exposure and you've wiped out the rest of your day, it's a sign you did too much, so you want to find that sweet spot where you feel better and your body's adapting because we know stress is only bad when you don't adapt to it. [34:09] Dr John's Epic Bio-Hacking Morning Routine  -       When connected to Mother Earth, we suck ions into our body for mitochondria, energy production, and overall health and balance. -       In the morning, Dr John does sungazing to activate his circadian rhythm. -       Breathwork and some exercises are beautiful ways to start a day. -       Dr John also takes supplements in the morning. -       How you start that morning determines how you will function for the rest of the day. Not everyone gets well in functional medicine. There are a lot of people sick and suffering in the world, and not everyone even becomes aware of the direct connection between diet, lifestyle, toxins, environment, stress, and other exposome factors as drivers of disease, but still sometimes even someone who seemingly does everything right still doesn't get great results. What separates those who DO HEAL from those who DON'T HEAL? One of, if not THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, is a HEALING MINDSET. There are many big picture things that I discuss in this podcast about a successful healing mindset, using some actual examples, and some personal rants, but talking about things such as:- Do they understand the big picture - that toxins, foods, infections, stress, other exposome factors cause dysfunctional  processes on a cellular level, that lead to disease processes expressing over time? - Are they connecting these mechanistic dots - this leads to this leads to this? You don't need to be an expert, but understanding the mechanisms helps understand the solutions.....- Do they have the discipline necessary to make dietary restrictions, lifestyle changes, and stay the course? It's not about perfection either, it's about progression.- Are they a "dabbler" and have they bounced around different practitioners, tried dozens of supplements? This is a red flag!!- Are they committed financially? Do they even care about their financial investment? These questions are important for practitioners to ask when attracting the right clientele, but also important for patients to ask about themselves, their motivation, determination, discipline, and mindset.HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART - - MINDSET CAN BE TRAINED!!! It's so important to train this growth mindset with your health and constantly remind yourself of your goals, targets, intentions, motivations to stay the course. It's ALSO really important to retrain your cells and your Limbic System, and in this podcast I talk about ways to do this, including constantly filling your brain with thoughts and words of Safety, Gratitude, Epigrams, Affirmations,  I talk about Limbic System retraining programs like DNRS and the Gupta Program, and this youtube video about Cell Danger Response and Limbic System Dysfunction.

Plus, how the cell danger response phases are potentially compromised in recovery.(17:30)The aim of a nutritional programme would be to provide nutrients to:· Restore mitochondrial health e.g inflammatory status and oxidative stress and supplying building blocks of nutrients for cell repair and proliferation· Restore the phases of Cell Danger Response so they work optimally and· Provide optimal amounts of specific nutrients to fuel the kreb/citric acid cycle to enable energy production (20:39)Functional Screening tests may involve:Amino Acid Profile, we need optimal amino acids to effectively repair and replace cells. Assessing amino acid profile enables identification of which amino acids are depleted and we are able to suggest foods and supplements to move them to an optimal level.Nutrient Status relating to the Krebs Cycle/Citric Acid Cycle (the process our bodies use to make energy). If required, we may add key nutrients which will support energy production and optimizing the CDR response. Three nutrients which may be considered are:· Carnitine· Creatine· CoQ10Fatty Acid Profile, having optimal levels of fatty acids is important for both cell health and function as well as for anti-inflammatory actions. We highlight the role of SPMs (specialised pro resolving mediators). These SPMS support inflammation resolution by limiting the extent and duration of the acute (27:21)How a personalised nutrition approach may help you get to the root cause of your fatigue and enable a targeted nutrition plan to be designed for you.(30:14)We share our reminder tips on how we can all support our immune system to protect against seasonal infections.(33:22)Aileen's favourite supplements to help protect against seasonal infections.(35:38)Our FOOD...

Dr. Neil Nathan is a physician and author, and is a Founding Diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine, and the International Society for Environmentally Acquired Illness (ISEAI). He has practiced medicine for over 50 years including 30 years treating patients with chronic complex illnesses, and 20 years treating patients with Lyme disease. He has written several several books about chronic illness, mold toxicity and other environmental illnesses, Lyme and energetic diagnosis. He joins us from Northern California to explore the foundations of mold toxicity, Lyme disease and other infections, and the impact they have on our cells and our nervous system. This episode is part one of a two part interview. Throughout his career, Dr. Nathan has observed that certain illnesses don't fit neatly into medical models. While working at a pain management center in the 1980's, Dr. Nathan and his colleagues saw many patients with what was once called fibrositis, and is now known as Fibromyalgia. Because diseases such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia were poorly understood, many of these patients were referred to psychiatrists, and given medications that didn't work. With better understanding of the biochemistry of Fibromyalgia and CFS, better treatments were discovered. Over time, though, those treatments became less effective, leading doctors to explore other contributing factors such as Lyme disease. Many patients who weren't responding to treatments for Lyme disease were also found to have mold toxicity. With the increase in patients presenting with these problems, Dr. Nathan decided to take matters into his own hands and learn all he could about Lyme disease and later, mold toxicity. In this episode we talk about:    * How stress affects thyroid function.    * What is the Cell Danger Response.    * How most thyroid issues are missed and mistreated.    * How to address thyroid function comprehensively.    -    Dr. Eric Balcavage is a functional medicine practitioner who looks to assess physiology looking for ways to really help people that want to optimize their overall health. His work is to analyze what's creating that excessive stress in your body and what you can do to reduce it, and how to support you on your way back to an optimal state of health.    In this episode he talks about how his job is different from allopathic medicine as his job is not to manage the thyroid disease or disorder but to look for ways to prevent it from happening in the first place.     Our bodies response to stress will affect us in different ways, for some people it might show up mostly as thyroid issues and for others it might show up as something else. Also, our bodies respond differently to supplements in allostatic and homeostatic states.     -   So how do we go from a state of allostasis back to homeostasis? Believing that the body can heal when we give it the right tools and support and look to get to the root cause of many different health issues.    His breakthrough moment came when he read the paper by Dr. Robert Naviaux: Cell Danger Response. He realized his approach was biased as to thinking how to fix the problem or symptoms instead of really going deep into the root of them to find a permanent solution. And he realized this was actually true not just for thyroid issues.    If we just keep chasing the symptoms and not the root cause of the problem, then we are not really healing.    It's important for people to understand that they can have signs and symptoms of altered thyroid physiology and the gland will still work fine.     50% of the US population is overweight or obese and that means that about 50% of the population has altered or adapted thyroid physiology and so their gland may be fine but it's one thing to make the hormone and it's another thing how the hormone works in your body.     He uses an analogy to explain this: You could have a full tank of gas but that doesn't mean the car is going to run well.     Similarly, it is possible to have a normal TSH and still not have optimal thyroid physiology.     When the body is in healthy mode (low stress) it says as soon as I get more calories, I'm going to increase metabolism so if you're gaining body fat and not lean muscle mass you could have a metabolism problem.     The things that end up clogging up the system and cause the metabolism to get stuck and therefore the fatigue and the weight gain and the other issues to develop are mainly related to how our diet, sleep, breathing patterns, emotional fitness, environmental fitness, metabolic fitness, and microbial fitness affect our stress state.     Start analyzing your lifestyle and how you're supporting your health on a daily basis. You might be going to many practitioners who might have prescribed different things and you still don't feel better and you're like how much money do I have to spend and how many practitioners do I have to see before we can solve this.      You need to have stress in your life, but we must have a better set of skills to be able to have turn that stressor into a positive experience.     If you've been struggling with what you know as thyroid issues or you are wondering if you have thyroid issues, make sure to check out Dr. Balcavage's book: The Thyroid Debacle.    https://www.amazon.com/Thyroid-Debacle-Dr-Eric-Balcavage/dp/B0B31VDBSV/ref=sr_1_1?crid=WUWKNVKTP6FI&keywords=thyroid+debacle+eric+balcavage&qid=1663080395&sprefix=thyroid+debacle%2Caps%2C66&sr=8-1     This book describes the thyroid and helps you understand beyond what you might hear from most practitioners, but more importantly it helps you understand your whole body, not just a thyroid but how to optimize your overall health.    My new book Master Your Stress, Reset Your Health is also a valuable resource for understanding how stress affects thyroid function and how reversing the effects of stress by mastering your own stress type will lead not only to an optimized thyroid function but an overall healthier you.    I'm happy to meet with you and help you put together a comprehensive plan to truly address your thyroid.    Dr. Doni   -   Connect with Dr. Doni:    Facebook HTTPS://FACEBOOK.COM/DRDONIWILSON   Instagram HTTPS://INSTAGRAM.COM/DRDONIWILSON   YouTube HTTPS://YOUTUBE.COM/USER/DONIWILSONND   Weekly Wellness Wisdom Newsletter: HTTPS://DOCTORDONI.COM/WWW     -   Books and Resources:    Order My New Book: https://www.amazon.com/Master-Your-Stress-Reset-Health/dp/1953295576   Stress Warrior Book (FREE)  HTTPS://DOCTORDONI.COM/STRESSWARRIOR      Stress Warrior Stress Resiliency Facebook Group (FREE)  HTTPS://FACEBOOK.COM/GROUPS/STRESSWARRIOR     7-day Stress Reset (FREE)  HTTPS://DOCTORDONI.COM/STRESS-RESET     HPV & Cervical Dysplasia Guide (FREE)  HTTPS://DOCTORDONI.COM/HPV-AND-CERVICAL-DYSPLASIA-GUIDE/     -   Personalized Solutions:    If you'd like to meet with Dr. Doni one-on-one for your health, request a Health Breakthrough Session: HTTPS://DOCTORDONI.COM/BREAKTHROUGH     To get an idea of more comprehensive options, read about Dr. Doni's Signature Consultation Programs: HTTPS://DOCTORDONI.COM/SERVICES   Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are product links and affiliate links and if you go through them to make a purchase I will earn a commission at no cost to you. How Humans Heal
#113 Address The Underlying Causes of Fatigue with Dr. Evan Hirsch!

How Humans Heal

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 21, 2022 54:58

Fatigue is not the same for everyone who experiences it. It can be a complex web of causes which requires a systematic approach in order to avoid aggravations.    In this episode of How Humans Heal, I discuss helping patients recover from fatigue with Dr. Evan Hirsch, [@EvanHirschMD] a functional medical doctor who experienced Chronic Fatigue himself.     He pushed aside the shame and guilt of not feeling well enough to keep up with his life and practice to identify 33 causes of fatigue. His mission became addressing those 33 causes of fatigue for himself and now thousands of other people in his online program.     95% of people he sees have thyroid function that is not optimized. And most of them have adrenal dysfunction. And I agree – I see those same patterns in my practice.     It's important to address all the causes of fatigue, not just one or two, in order to achieve complete resolution. We also want to address the root, of the root, of the root, of the cause of fatigue.      When we dig deeper, we find that stress, toxin exposure, and chronic infections need to be addressed to ultimately resolve fatigue.      -    As Dr. Evan explains, it often comes down to deficiencies and toxicities. Deficiencies such as nutrients, neurotransmitters, mitochondrial function and lack of good food, sleep, and movement. Toxicities such as the 500 chemicals we are exposed to before we walk out of the house. It can also be mold toxicity, tick-born infections, viruses, parasites, yeast, bacterial infections, allergens, adverse life events, negative experiences, and electromagnetic exposures.     The body ends up shutting down in what is called the Cell Danger Response. Which is why it can feel like a pile-up of health issues and multiplying symptoms.     Dr. Evan has figured out a 4-step process to assess and address the underlying causes of fatigue in a way that allows the body to heal most efficiently.     It doesn't start with detoxification. It's important to prepare the body and carefully open the detoxification pathways so that we don't make you feel worse in the process of addressing infections and toxins.     -    At the same time, it's important to know that healing is a process of taking a few steps forward and a couple steps backwards, individualizing along the way, as we learn what your body needs in order to heal.     As practitioners, we are really “course correctors” along the way, to guide you to know how to pivot and work through what comes up as you rebalance and heal.     Regaining your energy is absolutely possible, and it is important to keep in mind that it will be gradual over 12 to 24 months. You have to play the long game.     As someone who has experienced and recovered from fatigue myself, and helped thousands of patients with stress, toxins, and infections, as discussed in this episode, I can tell you that Dr. Evan's approach makes complete sense and is extremely thorough.     -    If you've been struggling with fatigue and/or a complex health issue, I highly recommend reading his book, which he is offering as a free gift, and checking out his online program.    To download Dr. Evan's book for free, Fix Your Fatigue: https://go.fixyourfatigue.org/full-book-pdf-optin     To learn about his The Fix Your Fatigue Program: https://doniwilson.krtra.com/t/Gl53p9ocS0Xc    -    To read more about these concepts, be sure to get a hold of my new book, Master Your Stress, Reset Your Health.   https://www.amazon.com/Master-Your-Stress-Reset-Health/dp/1953295576     -   Connect with Dr. Doni:    Facebook HTTPS://FACEBOOK.COM/DRDONIWILSON   Instagram HTTPS://INSTAGRAM.COM/DRDONIWILSON   YouTube HTTPS://YOUTUBE.COM/USER/DONIWILSONND   Weekly Wellness Wisdom Newsletter: HTTPS://DOCTORDONI.COM/WWW     -   Books and Resources:    Order My New Book: https://DoctorDoni.com/msrh      https://www.amazon.com/Master-Your-Stress-Reset-Health/dp/1953295576   Stress Warrior Book (FREE)  HTTPS://DOCTORDONI.COM/STRESSWARRIOR      Stress Warrior Stress Resiliency Facebook Group (FREE)  HTTPS://FACEBOOK.COM/GROUPS/STRESSWARRIOR     7-day Stress Reset (FREE)  HTTPS://DOCTORDONI.COM/STRESS-RESET     HPV & Cervical Dysplasia Guide (FREE)  HTTPS://DOCTORDONI.COM/HPV-AND-CERVICAL-DYSPLASIA-GUIDE/     -   Personalized Solutions:    If you'd like to meet with Dr. Episode 36. Spoiler alert: Brain inflammation is the common theme, the thread of similarity, among many seemingly different neurologic conditions. Tried a multitude of migraine treatments and yet nothing lasts? Have you considered that it's your environment that triggers them? There is an interesting observation in that most migraine sufferers are women, and 80% of those suffering from EMF hypersensitivity are women. Could it be that women's unique hormone physiology interacts differently with EMFs than men? Maybe. Men and women are very different biologically, and our brains are wired differently. FYI, most initial studies of the brain were done exclusively on men, by men, so no wonder men don't understand women! Oh, but I digress. Let's get on.And then there's chronic fatigue syndrome, Lyme disease, and other brain inflammatory conditions that seem to wax and wane in their severity with no rhyme or reason—or is there? We are in our infancy of understanding the effects of EMFs on the brain. In my last discussion with Daniel, we discussed how easily EMFs penetrate the brain and how far they can make it into children's developing brains. We touched on the idea of cell danger response, and in this episode, we explore this theory in more detail, and what it means for people suffering from migraines, Lyme disease, chronic fatigue, and other neurological conditions. We also talk about the role that Omega-3 supplements play in helping the body learn to adjust to EMFs. We can't stop EMFs, but we can help the body become more resilient to them and potentially avoid the trigger of cell danger response. To learn more about EMFs, EMF protection, and LightBody Omega-3 supplements, visit DefenderShield.com.Connect with Me!TikTok: @jenniferlittlefleckRumble: @autobiologywithjenniferWebsite: https://autobiology.net/YouTube: autobiologyIG: @autobiologywithjenniferAutobiology Bits Podcast on AppleAutobiology Bits Podcast on GoogleUse your Tech Safely DefenderShield® is proud to offer the best EMF protection and 5G safety solutions in the world.$50 off your Test from The DNA Company Revolutionizing DNA interpretation by matching genetic systems to human biochemistry. There is an expanding body of scientific research about the dynamic relationship between our experiences as children and our physical and mental health later on as adults. Our growing understanding is that when a child witnesses or experiences overwhelming negative events the nervous system becomes so inundated that the brain is unable to process what is happening. In response to a perceived threat, there is a rising energy and arousal level and this energy is understood to get trapped in the body's nervous system resulting in the inability to restore equilibrium. Because this energy is not released, it can cause a number of physical and emotional symptoms. This understanding of trauma may seem a little esoteric but, based on accumulating evidence, we know that trauma involves specific physiological processes that can last throughout a lifetime contributing to a range of chronic diseases. We also know that these adverse childhood experiences are a lot more common than we might have previously realised. Given that trauma is the result of a perceived threat, rather than an actual event, there are, in fact, countless circumstances in which this may occur. You only need to put yourself in the shoes of a young child under the age of 6 or 7 and think about the number of possible experiences that might be perceived as threatening or dangerous. And, while the effects of trauma can be severe, science also tells us they can be reversed. The implications of this cannot be overstated. When we take trauma into account we start to look at chronic disease through a whole new lens and the possibilities for healing, disease prevention and wellbeing widen significantly.Dr Veronique Mead joined us on the podcast to help us better understand this critical phenomenon. She was an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Obstetrics before changing careers and retraining as a Somatic Trauma Therapist. For the past 20 years, she has been integrating existing research on trauma into a new model for making sense of chronic illness. This is the full recording of the interview conducted for our Patient Journeys podcast titled Overcoming Chronic Pain. In this video, Dr. J and Evan talk about mitochondria and how to boost them. When we talk about your body's powers, the easy answer is nutrients, of course! Our body transforms those nutrients into energy, and it's that energy that boosts the cells in our body. All types of cells have small generators called mitochondria that, in many ways, are their sources for life. Mitochondria are the only part of the cell where our basic life requirements — food and air — are combined to make energy in a process known as the Krebs cycle. ===================================== Subscribe on I-Tunes: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com/itunes Review us at: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com/itunes Visit us at: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com Have a question: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com/question

BenGreenfieldFitness.com/donwood Dr. Don Wood is a guy I've been hearing about for years from multiple trusted friends of mine in the self-improvement and self-mastery realms, and I finally decided to connect with him and his work more deeply by hosting him at my house in Spokane, Washington to showcase the special flavor of therapy that he does - by working with both me and my family for a four hour session, followed by the podcast you can hear in this episode. Don is the Founder of the Inspired Performance Institute and developed something called "TIPP™", which is a cutting edge approach to high performance using advancements in neuroscience. After years of research, Dr. Wood coined the term “emotional concussions ™” which simply means events and experiences in your life may have had a profound effect on your current behaviors and habits, he refers to these events and experiences as “atmospheric conditions ™” If you experience PTSD-like symptoms, health issues related to an overactive sympathetic nervous system, or impediments in your progress towards everything from business success to relationship issues to athletic performance, Don says nothing is wrong with you, and you might simply just need a reboot. Don's work is based on the idea that events and experiences throughout our lifetime continue to play a role in how we experience life in the present. He has also realized that there was a better way of treating these type of issues. He says… …“Teaching people to live with, manage and cope with the daily stress doesn’t fix the problem. The solution comes from understanding it’s source and providing a long-term permanent solution”. Since 2015, Don's Inspired Performance Institute has worked to create innovative strategies to help people heal from the limiting effects of trauma, so they can feel and perform at their best. The result has been the development of a revolutionary approach to performance improvement referred to as TIPP (The Inspired Performance Program). TIPP is based on the idea that our minds have developed some glitches and error messages in the ways they store information about events from our past. And apparently, we all have these glitches! Even high-functioning individuals, like executives and professional athletes, have so-called glitches from their pasts, and once “reprocessed”, their performance improves to a whole new level. Once the mind is updated and refreshed using the Inspired Performance Institute’s NEURO technique, a part of TIPP, individuals are able to remain present, calm and focused, and their performance naturally improves. After we reset the mind with TIPP, we restore the body with our NOWW program. A chronically dysregulated and imbalanced nervous system can lead to anxiety, depression, PTSD, panic attacks, addictions, or even chronic illnesses such as auto-immune disorders, thyroid problems, cardiac and gastrointestinal diseases, and even, cancer. TIPP, TIPP KIDS, and the NOWW program are designed to help reset the mind and restore the body to optimal states of health, performance, and wellness. Don actually separates trauma into two camps. Most of us think of trauma as a clearly defined, often injury-inducing event like a car accident or a mugging. He calls this big ‘T’ trauma. The second type of trauma he calls emotional concussion. These are experiences that affected us psychologically but may be more loosely defined or harder to pinpoint. Don says that a very large percentage of the population is dealing with unprocessed trauma when you consider these two types of trauma. Unresolved trauma or disturbing events and experiences from your past may be interfering with your ability to function at your highest level. These experiences may limit our ability to regulate your mood, focus, or connect with others in a healthy, loving and safe way. When we experience a traumatic event, our body has a physical response to that trauma. Trauma triggers that fight or flight (aka active state) response. This creates inflammation in the body as a way of pausing the immune system so that the body can use all resources to respond to the trauma. When we are no longer in danger, the body allows everything to return to normal. What a lot of people don’t realize is that when we have unprocessed trauma, we think about it. And, when we think about it, we relive it which results in the same fight or flight response. We have the physical response to the trauma just by thinking about it! If we are doing this constantly, the immune system can’t function properly, which overtime results in autoimmune issues. Often we dismiss the idea that trauma is the cause of an issue because we may not recognize the experience as trauma. Don uses a great analogy in this episode that points to the high-definition memories we have of traumatic times in our past vs the muted memory we have of a non-threatening event (like the dinner we had last night). These high-definition memories can be very powerful and can trigger a physical response. The first step in identifying them as triggers sit to recognize the level of the memory and the physical response it brings. In Don's program, they actually monitor the brainwave state to determine the response to memories. Recognizing the physical response to memories of past trauma is not enough, the brain needs to be reconditioned as to how it responds to that memory. This is what Don does with TIPP. This program gets the mind to reset that high-definition memory into the same format as a day-to-day memory. By doing this, the body no longer sees that memory as a threat and it no longer triggers the fight or flight response. The brain is no longer sending an error message. He points out that far too often we treat the symptoms caused by these trauma responses. For example, treating anxiety, depression, or inflammation that will never be resolved if the trigger memory is not reset. Many people block bad experiences or they dismiss them as not being traumatic. This may lead them to believe that these experiences can’t be the cause because they don’t have these vivid memories Don is talking about. However, these memories may still be operating on a subconscious level and can still put the body into an active response state.  This happens because our minds receive too much information for us to actively process. So, the mind does something academics refer to as ‘time slicing’. This is when the mind takes in information and slices off some to be stored in the subconscious where it can be processed or accessed later. Then, when we encounter something similar, the mind goes searching for reference and the stored memory, resurrecting the memory in full color. This can trigger an active state response. For many people, the idea of unearthing or talking about their traumatic memories feels traumatic in itself. Don says that his patients don’t need to actually discuss the experience or share the memory. This type of work can be done without having to revisit the event consciously! During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Don began his work...12:38 -Techniques used to manage rather than fix stress...17:05 -Trauma isn't always experienced on a battlefield...29:50 -How to reprogram the brain...36:38 -Not just accepting, but laughing at the problem...39:43 -How River and Terran may process trauma in the future after a session with Don...45:17 -The success rate with Don's TIPP program...49:45 -Whether this work could be approached from a functional medicine angle...51:55 -How a Special Forces soldier overcame trauma thanks to Don's practice...55:30 -Studies to see what happens at a neurotransmitter level...1:00:00 -Anchors used to recall trauma...1:02:30 -Whether the effects can be felt via Skype or Zoom...1:17:45 -And much more! The Cell Danger Response can also be titled as the Healing Cycle. From this class presented at the Center for Healing Neurology in December, 2019, learn about the complexity of cellular signaling. At the perception of a threat (be it physical, chemical, pressure, pH, temperature, or a memory of threat that seems imminent again), the cells initiate a cascade of metabolic changes. There are three stages in this cycle: 1) down-regulation of energy production to re-route resources to contain and neurtralize the threat, 2) re-establishment of local order, 3) the re-connection of long-distance communication between the cells at the site of damage and all the other cells in the body. If the Cell Danger Response gets stuck on “ON”, then we can end up with a whole host of various chronic diseases. Listen in to hear neurologist Dr Ilene Ruhoy, PA-C Deirdre Gately, and ARNP Gillian Ehrlich discuss why it’s so important to complete the healing cycle to prevent and resolve chronic illness. Dr. Tim Jackson, DPT is a medical practitioner who realized traditional means of manual therapy and orthopedic care benefited only some of his patients. He began to dive deeper into the concept of overall wellness and gained knowledge about functional and environmental medicine, as well as digestive health.   In today’s episode, Tim talks about Mitochondrial Dysfunction and how just about every disease known to man is caused by issues with mitochondria. He also recommends supplements people should take to make sure your body’s mitochondrial health is up and running.   “A classic sign of Mitochondrial Dysfunction is if you have multisystemic involvement.” Dr. Tim Jackson   In this episode, you’ll learn:   The first to be affected by mitochondrial dysfunction is the nervous system due to it having the largest number of mitochondria in the body. This often results to what we call Brain Fog. Having enough immune cells is one thing but having enough active or functioning cells is another. Mitochondrial Dysfunction causes immune system inefficiency. L-Carnitine and glutathione are great supplements to take when you want to improve mitochondrial health and efficiency. The more you have symptoms in varying systems the more likely are you to have mitochondrial dysfunction. Glutathione supplementation is almost a necessity due to the number of toxins your body is introduced to on a daily basis. Thyroid dysfunction can lead affects the mitochondria and leads to dysfunction. An efficient circadian rhythm prevents mitochondrial dysfunction and improves pathways in the body. Low melatonin may affect mitochondrial health. The first step in healing mitochondria is calming down inflammation and reducing oxidative stress. Glyphosates, an ingredient commonly used in weed killers in farms, damages mitochondria. Antibiotics are harmful to your mitochondria. Cipro is one of the most harmful and should only be taken during life threatening situations. Too much EMF exposurefrom cellphones trigger what we call the “Cell Danger Response” and causes mitochondrial damage.     Key Takeaways:   Taking supplements for your mitochondria is great but daily habits have a larger contribution than any supplement you can buy. Justbecause something is approved by a government organization doesn't mean it's safe for the mitochondria. Dr. Nathan is a Board-Certified Family Physician and a Founding Diplomate of the American Board of Holistic Medicine. From the time he began medical school at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine, it has always been his passion to try to help as many of patients as possible. He was never satisfied with sending patients home with the cliché: “Sorry, we just don’t have any answers for you.” In a career of more than 40 years, he has delivered babies, done surgery, and worked in the emergency room but over the years found other disciplines that held the promise of providing more useful answers for those patients that did not respond adequately to conventional care. Over time, he found himself working mostly with patients who had not received a clear diagnosis from conventional medicine and were suffering with persistent and debilitating illnesses. These included Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic Lyme disease with its co-infections, mold illness, Autism, and all varieties of Chronic Pain, amongst others. Dr. Neil Nathan is honored to have been the recipient of the First Annual Rich van Konynenburg Award from the Seeking Health Educational Institute Conference coordinated by Dr. Ben Lynch. Dr. Nathan worked with Dr. Konynenburg in completing research on methylation chemistry in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia which helped to launch the profound increase in interest in this subject on an international level. Many of his patients simply cannot take even miniscule doses of herbs, or homeopathic remedies without a profound reaction. While their physicians, who may never have seen such sensitivities, diagnose them as having depression and anxiety, these reactions are not psychogenic, but physical. He continues to develop new strategies and treatments to help these patients recover their health. Wondering What Happened to Your Body? Wondering Why You are Still Sick? On Monday, November 9, 2015 at 8 PM (eastern time) Dr. Jess Armine will explain how stress creates illness. It's called the "Cell Danger Response". We have always known that very stressors can create illness in the human body and, frankly, we have given it "lip service". Last week Dr. Jess Armine and Shawn Bean attended SHEICON2015 given by Dr. Ben Lynch. Dr. Jess had the honor of boing o0ne of the speakers. The main feature in the entire seminar was the cell danger response and its relationship to mitochondrial dysfunction as well as the degradation of all your bodily processes. In other words, the very basis of disease and illness! Understanding the cell danger response is the path to healing. This upcoming Monday Dr. Jess Armine will, in his usual manner, make this complex concept easy to understand and fun! (trust me, it wasn't easy)  :-) Join us and learn! They'll be plenty of time for questions and answers. Dr. Armine will create a PowerPoint for everyone to follow along. We promised you cutting edge research and we are delivering! See you then!
