The Andrew Low House is located in Savannah, Georgia and is a beautifully restored 19th century home that sits in the heart of Savannah's historic district. A sculpted and well-cared-for garden leads guests to a door that opens in to a part of the history of a Scottish immigrant, Andrew Low, who left his mark on the city and also the woman who founded the Girl Scouts, his daughter-in-law Juliette Gordon Low. Now in the afterlife, it seems that both of these individuals are still connected to the house. On this episode, we are joined by our friends Bailey and Lizzie, who are not only tour guides in Savannah, but they've had their own paranormal experiences in the Andrew Low House. Hailed as one of the South's best food cities, Savannah, Georgia, is renowned as one of the nation's most popular destinations to celebrate St. Patrick's Day; the oldest and most haunted city in the state; the only city General William T. Sherman didn't burn on his March to the Sea; and the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts. It's also where Forrest Gump and countless other movies have been filmed. But did you know Savannah is also the home of the original chicken finger and Georgia's smallest pie house and pub? With breathtaking coastal landscapes marked by ancient oaks, sweeping Spanish moss, cobblestone streets, and horse-drawn carriages, the Hostess City of the South is the third-busiest port in the nation, with a charming reputation for Southern hospitality and an eclectic personality as deep and wide as the Savannah River. Just as unique as founder James Oglethorpe's original downtown design of 24 squares, Savannah's ever-evolving food scene will surprise and delight, challenge and inspire, and most assuredly leave you hungry and thirsty for more. Which Irish pub do you visit to dance the night away and sing karaoke at the top of your lungs? What Mexican restaurant has the best Cinco de Mayo party and the largest tequila selection? Just how did The Olde Pink House & Tavern become pink? Where do you go to eat truly local Savannah seafood or to find Savannah-style barbecue? In Unique Eats and Eateries of Savannah, get the answers to these questions and meet the friendly faces behind the food with local author and Georgia native Rebekah Faulk Lingenfelser as your personal guide. Welcome to March 12th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate sunshine protection and Girl Scouts with gumption. Daylight Saving Time. Changing our clocks, losing sleep…ugh. But actually, Daylight Saving Time is a good thing. Hold on a minute… Daylight Saving Time is making our lives better. We spend more time awake in the evening than morning, this gives us the sunshine to enjoy it. And sunshine is good; vitamin D, increased exercise, more socializing…all things that make us healthier and happier. As a matter of fact, the Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act which would make Daylight Saving Time permanent. This year for Daylight Saving Time, don't focus on the clock changing, focus instead on the long, lazy summer days ahead of us. The life of young Juliette Gordon Low was full of adventure. She learned to ride elephants in India, climbed the Great Pyramid in Egypt and even went trout fishing with Rudyard Kipling. But when she organized the first Girl Scout meeting in 1912 with 18 girls, we bet JGL never imagined it would grow into a nearly 4 million strong organization. Today the Girl Scout program does its share to build courage, confidence and character in its young women, along with financial literacy with its cookie sales. Notable alumni include Lucille Ball, Sandra Day O' Connor, and Sally Ride. On National Girl Scout Day, we celebrate the adventurous spirit of one young girl who has made a difference to millions. In Part 1 of this epic two-parter, Anna and Lia share their fondest cookie memories and tell us how letting their creativity go wild with cookie decorating was important part of their holiday traditions growing up. They also debate Oreo cookie eating methods — the twist and the dunk — and prove there's no such thing as moderation when it comes to these sweet treats. Then Lia Ballentine, our Chef-Creator, digs into cookie history, presents the “cookie vs. biscuit” debate, and goes through an epic list of cookie holidays. Can you believe there are more than 15 cookie days to celebrate each year? She highlights some of the most interesting cookie days on the calendar (National Spicy Hermit Cookie Day?) then tells us about three important women who have made (and continue to make) a tremendous impact in cookies and culture: Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girls Scouts; Ruth Graves Wakefield, creator of the chocolate chip cookies; and Jasmine Cho, a cookie activist. Rachel Broussard and Keesha Buteau of the Girls Scouts of Louisiana – Pines to the Gulf, join us today. We've invited Rachel and Keesha to share the Girl Scout story. And, as many diehard fans know, it's almost time for the annual cookie sale.  Rachel Broussard serves as CEO of Pines to the Gulf and has over 20 years of service with the organization. A Kaplan native, she graduated from UL-Lafayette. Her background in the military afforded her the opportunity to attend college as her tuition was covered. She first worked for Acadiana Youth, and then joined the Girl Scouts in what was then known as Bayou Girl Scout Council covering 13 parishes in the Acadiana region. Keesha Buteau serves as Chief Operating Officer and began her service with the Scouts in January 2006.  A Lafayette native, she graduated from Acadiana High School and was inspired by participating in Girls State. While she originally thought she wanted to go into law and had the opportunity to work with the District Attorney's office in the Juvenile Division, her heart broke as she saw the "kids in shackles, little kid chain gangs." She realized that she wanted to help young people before they got into trouble. While her parents were originally a bit dismayed by her shifted career focus, she has never regretted her commitment to serving youth and believes the Girl Scouts is a perfect fit. Today, Girl Scouts of Louisiana - Pines to the Gulf serves girls in the 42 parishes west of the Mississippi River. Participants can be as young as Kindergarten and go through 12th grade. While COVID has been tough on everyone, both agreed that incorporating technology such as Zoom has been a godsend in helping organizations learn how to communicate more effectively. The Girl Scouts members are all female, and focus solely on girls and its activities are only participated in by girls. While there is a place for the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scout organization stands firm that single-sex programming is beneficial to young girls who are fighting to find their way in the world. "Although your daughter likely goes to school with boys, and might play Saturday morning sports and share the local playground with them, the realities of her day-to-day life are anything but the same as those of her male peers. In fact, studies show that in coed learning environments, boys receive more praise than girls when they call out in class, making girls less likely to raise their hands. Furthermore, boys are allowed to problem solve on their own during class time, which fosters independence, whereas teachers tend to step in and “help” girls, leading girls to question their own abilities." Learn more at https://www.girlscouts.org/en/raising-girls/happy-and-healthy/happy/girls-only-single-gender-empowering-girls.html The Girl Scouts were founded in Savannah, Georgia by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912. The programming has consistently focused on service and the Girl Scout Promise rings true of what you expect from young leaders: "On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, to live by the Girl Scout." The goal of the Scouts is to help the girls grow as they learn positive values, to take their skills into their communities, and make a positive difference. "That is at the core of who we are as Girls Scouts", according to Rachel Broussard. "to make lasting and respectful connections, and to go out and solve problems in their communities." Keesha's daughter is a Girl Scout Cadet at 11 years of age, having started the scouts in kindergarten. As her mom, Keesha limits outside activities to 2 or 3 to preserve family time, and her daughter always puts Scouts at the top of the list of what she wants to participate in. The interaction with her daughters' troop continually inspires Keesha to see the value of scouting. "Be a Friend First" is a valued program that teaches self-confidence, how to have healthy habits and relationships.

Low was a Progressive reformer and in 1911 had been introduced to the Girl Guides, the English offshoot of the Boy Scouts, while on a visit to Great Britain. She embraced the idea, and once back home in Georgia Low gathered eighteen girls around her and began teaching them the values of their own individuality, strength, and intellect. Like with the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts hiked, swam, camped, and engaged in physical sports, but Low also wanted them to learn how to read the world around them.

In this episode, I bring on Melissa Herrera of Mimosa Sisterhood — a tipsy, story-telling podcast that celebrates the lives of women in history, as well as current history-making women — to share the stories of four incredible women throughout history that most of us probably didn't know existed. The four women she covers are: Juliette Gordon Low, Noor Inayat Khan, Nellie Bly, & Henrietta Lacks — and let me tell you, these women and their stories are mind-blowing, empowering, and even a bit insane. On their website it shares that its founder, Juliette Gordon Low envisioned an organization that would prepare girls to meet their world with courage, confidence, and character. DeafConnect - Connecting the Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing Community to the Memphis Metropolitan Area. There are more than 100,000 individuals with hearing loss in Shelby County and more than 750,000 across Tennessee.Deafness is the third most common disability in the world, although deaf people in general don't consider their hearing loss a problem that should be fixed. Instead they experience life like the rest of us - with friends, families, challenges and successes. Deaf individuals may communicate differently, but they have the same hopes and dreams we all do.There are four categories within the Big-D Deaf community: those who are deaf (those with complete hearing loss), hard of hearing, deaf-blind and late-deafened (those who lose hearing later in life). It's important for people in the business community to understand that the Americans with Disabilities Act requires businesses to provide interpreting services for people who request them. Under the ADA, the business must cover the cost for the interpreter. Businesses and individuals can call DeafConnect to schedule qualified interpreters. What DeafConnect does - In addition to interpreting services, we advocate for the Deaf community, we host programs and classes to educate the deaf and hard-of-hearing, and we build community and awareness by holding a number of events each year.Earlier this month we hosted deaf awareness training with the Shelby County Sheriff's new recruits - something we do with the Sheriff's office. You can imagine how quickly a situation can escalate if someone is deaf and thus can't hear an officer's commands, so our law enforcement leaders recognize the importance of this kind of training. We will host our Halloween Trunk or Treat, where we'll have people sign words in American Sign Language for children to receive their candy. In September we celebrated Deaf Awareness Month. That's when the deaf community celebrates its uniqueness and brings awareness, understanding and support to people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. We celebrated with an annual event we call the Deaf Family Reunion, a picnic we held this year at Marquette Park. We had hundreds of deaf people and those who care about them join us.Our other events include Taco Tuesdays; Snack and chats, where we bring people from the Deaf community together so we can understand what's important to them and how we can better serve them. We're collaborating with Hattiloo Theatre, our black repertory theater, to hold signed performances. We've had three so far this season, and we have a holiday performance set for Nov. 30th. We also conduct educational programs for the Deaf around issues like health, finance and technology. We're holding Driver's Education classes on Saturdays starting Nov. 9. And we will hold a college night with the nation's premier university for the Deaf, Gallaudet University out of Washington, D.C.We're very excited about a new partnership with the Youth Services Department of the City of Memphis. We're working together on their I Am Included program, which will promote employment and education opportunites for young people who are deaf.American Sign Lanauge DeafConnect offers classes in American Sign Language. Many deaf people communicate using American Sign Language. ASL is a visual language involving signs, facial expressions and body movement. It's used by many in the U.S. and Canada, and like spoken language, it's different from sign languages in other countries. Some deaf people can read lips, however, it's important to recognize that most of speech occurs within the mouth and not on the lips making it quite difficult to fully understand what's being said. That's why hand signs and facial expressions are so important when you're communicate with someone who is deaf.DeafConnect holds 12-week adult ASL classes each spring, summer and fall. Each summer we hold an ASL summer camp for students ages 6 - 15. These classes are taught by instructors who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Many of our attendees at the summer camp - and even in our adult ASL classes - tell us they don't have deaf family members - they're just interested in learning how to communicate using ASL and learning about Deaf culture. Our next adult ASL class will begin in the spring. Some famous deaf people Deaf people have made countless contributions to society. Ludwig van Beethoven created some of his greatest musical pieces after he was late-deafened. Thomas Alva Edison was deaf, as was Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts. In 1995 Heather Whitestone became the first deaf Miss America. Actress Marlee Matlin is deaf, and Nyle Dimarco was the first deaf winner of both America's Next Top Model and Dancing with the Stars.A deaf person made another important contribution that's particularly visible as football season gets underway. Until 1892, football players would talk to teammates on the field to decide strategies for the next play. That proved particularly troublesome for deaf football teams, because sign language was visible from all over the field. To keep competitors from knowing their strategy, Gallaudet University quarterback Paul Hubbard led his team to gather in a circle between plays so they could communicate in sign language without the opposing team knowing their plans. Thus, the huddle was born. Growing interest and visibility - The deaf community is increasingly visible nationally. LinkedIn and Marriott both have TV commercials featuring deaf people. Google and FedEx have interpreters on staff. The deaf community in Memphis is increasingly visible, too. Our Malco Movie Fourth Saturdays (with captioning), Hattiloo performances (with interpreting), ASL Summer Camp for kids and ASL classes for adults have all seen significant attendance. Rhodes College has an active ASL club. We have 25 ASL interpreters who provided more than 12,000 hours of interpreting through DeafConnect alone last year. ASL is now accepted as a foreign language at the University of Memphis and offered as a minor. How can the listeners help?  Simply listening to this program and becoming more aware of deafness and its unique culture is a big step. Then people can get involved: follow us on social media. Take a sign class. Attend our events. And perhaps most importantly for business leaders, hire deaf people, and support them so they can be successful contributors to your business.Learn more:  https://deafconnectmidsouth.org/

Welcome once again to our insanity, this week the professor brings us good news about how the Uncle Sam is allowing the opportunity for online games to be operated by fans when the game is abandoned like a box full of puppies. Can you help give a game a good home? The DJ says Buck is famous with lawyers, what do you think, is he or is he just a legend in his own lunch box? Perhaps he is famous like Kim Kardashian (we apologise to those who aren’t intellectually challenged here) who was attacked by Jon Bon Jovi (who is believe it or not OLDER then Buck) for only having made a porno. Also, the Fallout76 BETA has a bug that deletes the almost 50 gig game forcing a reinstall. Now that could really suck, particularly if your internet is as bad as the DJ’s. We also discuss the classic Runescape appearing in mobile platform for fans to play once more, and it is a hit. Speaking of the DJ, he brings us news about the Avatar sequels that are currently in production. It is looking like a new Rocky Balboa franchise folks. But honestly, will this be a series of beautiful movies that are as pointless as an umbrella in a hurricane like the first movie? Buck brings us a story of a galactic scale drama in the slow tortured death of a galaxy. But we must ask, is this in fact the first recognised example of an interstellar cupcake with the Milky Way being the victim? But let’s take a moment of silence to witness the death of the Small Magellanic Cloud. In games the Professor plays statues, the video game not the kids one, which apparently might be more fun. The DJ is playing Red Dead Redemption 2, and no, has not been drawing disgusting images in the snow. Buck plays Metro 2033 and is shooting Nazis and Commies. We hope you enjoy our insanity as much as we do, it is always better to be crazy in a group then on your own. Day in Washington #Disability #Policy Podcast. #GirlScouts Refuses to Provide #Interpreter Services for #Deaf Member. Have they forgotten their own history?! They were founded by a woman with a significant hearing impairment! (Note from Day: The post is up a little late. It's dated for December but still important!) http://dayinwashington.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Girl-Scouts-Interpreting-Services-Final.mp3   Because I enjoy the irony, here is an image of the Girl Scout Promise - in Sign Language TRANSCRIPT: Hello and welcome to Day in Washington, your disability policy podcast. Together, we will explore and analyze issues of interest to the disability community.  I'm your host Day Al-Mohamed working to make sure you stay informed.  Today, I want to talk about a lawsuit currently in the 7th Circuit.  It involves a young girl, a deaf girl, who uses sign language and it involves the Girl Scouts of America. First, let me start with Juliette Gordon Low.  Juliette Gordon Low was the founder of the Girl Scouts of America. Because of chronic ear infections she became deaf in one ear in early adulthood, losing hearing in her other ear in 1886.  She was 26 years old.  In 1912, she created the Girl Scouts to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place and to create programs for girls of all age levels, races, ethnicities, beliefs, economies, geographies and physical abilities. I bring up Juliette Gordon Low, the deaf founder of the Girl Scouts of America because on December 10th, 2014 the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals heard the oral argument in a case brought on behalf of Megan Runion, a 15 year-old deaf girl who was denied American Sign Language interpreters at Girl Scout meetings. Let me read from the Complaint filed with the US District Court  Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division: Megan Runnion is a 12-year-old girl who joined the Girl Scouts when she was in kindergarten. Megan is deaf and communicates using American Sign Language or ASL. For six years, Megan was provided with a sign language interpreter by Girl Scouts for troop meetings and outings, giving her an opportunity equal to her peers to participate in Girl Scout activities. Megan loved being a Girl Scout. Near the start of 2011 to 2012 school year as Megan began sixth-grade, Girl Scouts stopped providing sign language interpreters. Despite requests by Megan's mother to reinstate the interpreter services, Girl Scouts refused. Then, in January of 2012 without warning to Megan or her family, the troop leaders announced that Megan's troop was disbanding. Megan's mother was informed that the troop was being disbanded because of her insistence that the Girl Scouts provide interpreter services for Girl Scout programs and activities. Megan has not been offered placement in a new troop with interpreter services despite her mother requesting such placement. Thus, for the very first time since kindergarten, Megan is not a Girl Scout. You'll notice this case is at the Appellate level. That's because Megan lost at the local district court level. The court said that as a matter of law, Girl Scouts is not "principally engaged in the business of providing education, healthcare, housing, social services, or parks and recreation." All items that they would receive federal financial assistance for and therefore which fall under the purview of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.  Thereby making it mandatory that they provide interpreter services. Just for a bit of background the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. It stablishes a federal program that basically is supposed to improve the lot of individuals with disabilities and among its purposes are, let me quote here:  "...to empower individuals with disabilities to maximize employment, economic self-sufficiency, independence, and inclusion and integration into society."  So the idea being that if there's an entity who receives feder...
