The focus of this talk concerns Dr. Grob's work with ayahuasca users in Brazil. As far as I know, this was the first government approved human study of the physiological effects of ayahuasca on humans. This study compared 15 long-term ayahuasca drinkers with healthy individuals and found that UDV members had lower levels of anxiety and many had overcome alcohol abuse. Another study by Grob and Dartiu Xavier Silveira compared 40 adolescent ayahuasca drinkers with non-drinkers. The research showed positive outcomes, such as reduced alcohol consumption among UDV teenagers and improved mood, self-acceptance, and interpersonal relationships in participants. Since 2006, he has been conducting FDA-approved clinical research with the psychedelic compound psilocybin. Dr. Bossis was director of palliative care research and co-principal investigator on the 2016 clinical trial demonstrating a significant reduction in emotional distress from a single psilocybin session in persons with cancer or near the end of life, specifically, a rapid decrease in depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and demoralization along with improvements in spiritual well-being and quality of life. He is the study director and lead therapist on an FDA-approved clinical trial investigating a psilocybin-generated mystical experience with religious leaders.Dr. Bossis is a training supervisor of psychotherapy at NYU-Bellevue Hospital and the co-founder and former co-director of the Bellevue Palliative Care Service. He is on the faculty of The Center for Psychedelic Therapies and Research at the California Institute of Integral Studies and has a long-standing interest in comparative religion, mystical experience, and the interface of psychology and spirituality. His primary psychedelic research interests are the treatment of end-of-life existential distress and advancing our understanding of consciousness, meaning, and spirituality. Charles Grob is a professor of Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences and Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He was the first researcher granted FDA approval to clinically study MDMA and ayahuasca in the nineties and has spent nearly 50 years studying psychedelics.

His research has included the first FDA approved Phase 1 study of the physiological and psychological effects of MDMA (3,4-methlyenedioxymethamphetamine), a multi-national, collaborative study of the Amazonian plant hallucinogen decoction, ayahuasca, in Brazil and a pilot investigation of the safety and efficacy of psilocybin in the treatment of anxiety in adult patients with advanced-stage cancer. His most recent research has examined the safety and efficacy of an MDMA treatment model with adult autistics with severe social anxiety. The Psychedelic era of the mid-60s was a time of social, musical and artistic change influenced by psychedelic drugs, but behind the cultural curtain, a world of research was beginning to open up into the therapeutic potential of these drugs - one that was unfortunately short lived. In 1970, President Richard Nixon called Timothy Leary, the Harvard psychologist famously known for advocating the exploration of the therapeutic potential of psychedelic drugs as a cure-all for societies woes, "the most dangerous man in America." As a backlash to their role in the cultural upheaval of the 1960s, the majority of these drugs were declared illegal, driving hallucinogenic research and culture underground. Now, these drugs are in the midst of a revival, as new research indicates treatment options for a variety of mental illnesses and disorders, too valuable not to investigate. As psychedelic drug research bubbles back up to the surface in labs across the globe - we ask whether these drugs have a role beyond disease and if their use in creative practice will ever loose the stigma.  Our first guest, Rahel Debebe, front woman of folk-prog-jazz band Hejira, talks to us about seeing colors and shapes when she hears music and how that has influenced her creativity. Vocalist and song writer, Debebe has performed to sold-out audiences in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House. Hejira, will release their album Thread of Gold in February 2019. Later in the episode, we are joined by Dr. Charles Grob, Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the UCLA School of Medicine. He talks to us about the turbulent history of psychedelic drug research. Dr. Grob has conducted the first government approved psychobiological research study of MDMA, and was the principal investigator of an international research project in the Brazilian Amazon studying the visionary plant brew, Ayahuasca.  He has also published the first approved research investigation in decades on the safety and efficacy of psilocybin in the treatment of anxiety in patients with advanced-stage cancer. Charles Grob, M.D., is Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the UCLA School of Medicine and Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He conducted the first government-approved study of MDMA, and was the principal investigator of an international biomedical psychiatric research project in the Brazilian Amazon of the plant, ayahuasca. He is currently conducting an investigation of the effects of psilocybin on anxiety in cancer patients. Robert Jesse is convenor of the Council on Spiritual Practices. Through CSP, he was instrumental in creating the psilocybin research team at the Johns Hopkins University, and he is one of its co-investigators. Prior to CSP, he worked as a consultant in information technology for AT&T Bell Labs and others, then in several capacities for Oracle Corporation, lastly as a vice president of business development.

DECONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM meets professor Charles Grob. Dr. Grob has been the Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center since 1993. And even for a specialist on mood and anxiety disorders he’s extraordinarily sympathethic and charming. Professor Grob is a believer in the self-medication hypothesis of substance abuse. Which basically means that het hinks that if someone is using or abusing a substance it might be because of a biological or psychological lack that the subject tries to compensate for. He has published in the professional literature on a variety of topics, including adolescent development and psychopathology, cross-cultural models of substance use and misuse and the history of hallucinogens in psychiatry. His research has included the first FDA approved Phase 1 study of the physiological and psychological effects of MDMA, a multi-national, collaborative study of the Amazonian plant hallucinogen decoction, ayahuasca, in Brazil and a pilot investigation of the safety and efficacy of psilocybin in the treatment of anxiety in adult patients with advanced-stage terminal cancer. This week's guest is Mariavittoria Mangini, PhD, FNP. Dr. Mangini is a member of the board of directors of the Women's Visionary Congress, and has been a family nurse midwife for twenty five years. She has written extensively on the impact of psychedelic experiences in shaping the lives of her contemporaries, and has worked closely with many of the most distinguished investigators in this field. Her current project is the development of a Thanatology program for the study of death and dying. Jonathan was alerted to her work and her resonance with Psychedelic Parenting when a listener passed along a digital copy of her 2000 PhD dissertation entitled Yes, Mom Took Acid: The Sociohistorical Influence of Prior Psychedelic Drug Use in Adults. We soon discovered that not only was she a WVC board member, but also working in a family practice that incorporated cannabis as a regular part of their work.
