Dr. Richard Miller is my special guest tonight to discuss how top researchers were carrying out experiments with psychedelic drugs under the direction of the government.  Embracing the revival of psychedelic research and the discovery of new therapeutic uses, clinical psychologist Dr. Richard Louis Miller discusses what is happening today in psychedelic medicine--and what will happen in the future--with top researchers and thinkers in this field, including Rick Doblin, Stanislav Grof, James Fadiman, Julie Holland, Dennis McKenna, David Nichols, Charles Grob, Phil Wolfson, Michael and Annie Mithoefer, Roland Griffiths, Katherine MacLean, and Robert Whitaker.  Dr. Miller and his contributors cover the tumultuous history of early psychedelic research brought to a halt 50 years ago by the U.S. government as well as offering non-technical summaries of the most recent studies with MDMA, psilocybin, LSD, and ayahuasca. They explore the biochemistry of consciousness and the use of psychedelics for self-discovery and healing. They discuss the use of psilocybin for releasing fear in the terminally ill and the potential for MDMA-assisted psychotherapy in the treatment of PTSD. They examine Dr. Charles Grob's research on the indigenous use and therapeutic properties of ayahuasca and Dr. Gabor Mate's attempt to transport this plant medicine to a clinical setting with the help of Canada's Department of National Health.  Dr. Miller and his contributors explore the ongoing efforts to restore psychedelic therapies to the health field, the growing threat of overmedication by the pharmaceutical industry, and the links between psychiatric drugs and mental illness. They also discuss the newly shifting political climate and the push for new research, offering hope for an end to the War on Drugs and a potential renaissance of research into psychedelic medicines around the world.Follow Our Other ShowsFollow UFO WitnessesFollow Crime Watch WeeklyFollow Paranormal FearsFollow Seven: Disturbing Chronicle StoriesJoin our Patreon for ad-free listening and more bonus content.Follow us on Instagram @mysteriousradioFollow us on TikTok mysteriousradioTikTok Follow us on Twitter @mysteriousradio Follow us on Pinterest pinterest.com/mysteriousradio Like us on Facebook Facebook.com/mysteriousradio

The focus of this talk concerns Dr. Grob's work with ayahuasca users in Brazil. As far as I know, this was the first government approved human study of the physiological effects of ayahuasca on humans. This study compared 15 long-term ayahuasca drinkers with healthy individuals and found that UDV members had lower levels of anxiety and many had overcome alcohol abuse. Another study by Grob and Dartiu Xavier Silveira compared 40 adolescent ayahuasca drinkers with non-drinkers. The research showed positive outcomes, such as reduced alcohol consumption among UDV teenagers and improved mood, self-acceptance, and interpersonal relationships in participants. These studies contributed to understanding the therapeutic potential of ayahuasca ARCHIVE of Dr. Charles Grob on the Psychedelic Salon

We live in an exciting time for psychedelic research. While mental health is often the focus of these medicines, what about their use at the end of life? Our guest, Anthony (Tony) Bossis focuses specifically on those nearing end of life or in palliative care.Tony is clearly passionate about what he does as we delve into cutting-edge research being conducted on the use of high-dose psilocybin for inducing peak experiences and its potential in end-of-life care. He explores the role of psychedelics in fighting demoralization and the fear of death, how we can expand the reach of psychedelic therapies, and the current political state of psychedelic research. His interests and experience make this a captivating and thought-provoking listen for all.“It's always funny to be a scientist talking about love all the time, but I'm glad I am.”Anthony P. Bossis, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine, an adjunct professor of classics and religious studies at the University of Ottawa, and an investigator at The Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation. Since 2006, he has been conducting FDA-approved clinical research with the psychedelic compound psilocybin. Dr. Bossis was director of palliative care research and co-principal investigator on the 2016 clinical trial demonstrating a significant reduction in emotional distress from a single psilocybin session in persons with cancer or near the end of life, specifically, a rapid decrease in depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and demoralization along with improvements in spiritual well-being and quality of life. He is the study director and lead therapist on an FDA-approved clinical trial investigating a psilocybin-generated mystical experience with religious leaders.Dr. Bossis is a training supervisor of psychotherapy at NYU-Bellevue Hospital and the co-founder and former co-director of the Bellevue Palliative Care Service. He is on the faculty of The Center for Psychedelic Therapies and Research at the California Institute of Integral Studies and has a long-standing interest in comparative religion, mystical experience, and the interface of psychology and spirituality. Today, Debbie talks with Dr. Bree Johnston, a geriatrician and a palliative care physician who is also certified in psychedelic therapies. In case you haven't noticed, the topic of psychedelic therapy has gone mainstream in the past several years. Taking a guided psilocybin trip is now viewed as a highly effective way to ease fear of dying. But it's complicated. It took Debbie several months to find just the right person to interview about the therapeutic benefits of psychedelics. Her research led her to Dr. Bree Johnston who is perfectly credentialed for this topic as well as being a notably clear and wise teacher for [B]OLDER podcast listeners. She's been a practicing physician for 35 years and recently became certified in Psychedelic Therapies and Research through the California Institute of Integral Studies. They talk about:- The problem of legality (she predicts psilocybin therapy will be legal in a few years)- Why psychedelic therapy is especially useful for older, dying patients- Her own psychonaut experiences- The dissolution of "self" and becoming part of a whole (a common experience on a psychedelic trip)- The current studies being done at Johns Hopkins and NYU- Microdosing- And her evaluation of which psychedelic therapies are currently most useful: psilocybin, MDMA (aka ecstasy), ketamine (not illegal but results can vary widely). They also explore the complexity that comes with medicalizing psychedelics as well as the ethics surrounding legalization.  This is a highly informative conversation with a knowledgeable physician. Mentioned in this episode or useful:Dr. Bree Johnston on LinkedInThe Trip Treatment by Michael Pollan (The New Yorker; February 5, 2015)How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence by Michael Pollan (Penguin Press; 2018)The Pied Piper of Psychedelic Toads by Kimon de Greef (The New Yorker; March 21, 2022)Berkeley Center for the Science of PsychedelicsPsychedelic Therapy Training Certificate | California Institute of Integral StudiesThe Microdose NewsletterNew York Magazine Investigative Podcast: Cover Story: Power TripJohns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness ResearchCenter for Psychedelic Medicine | NYUA Really Good Day: How Microdosing Made a Mega Difference in My Mood, My Marriage, and My Life by Ayelet Waldman (Knopf; 2017)Brian Anderson - Studies at UCSFSacred Knowledge: Psychedelics and Religious Experiences by William Richards (Columbia University Press; 2015)Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies - MAPSMAPS NewsletterHandbook of Medical Hallucinogens by Charles Grob and Jim Grigsby (The Guilford Press; 2021)Note from DebbieIf you've been enjoying the podcast, please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts. The Psychedelic era of the mid-60s was a time of social, musical and artistic change influenced by psychedelic drugs, but behind the cultural curtain, a world of research was beginning to open up into the therapeutic potential of these drugs - one that was unfortunately short lived. In 1970, President Richard Nixon called Timothy Leary, the Harvard psychologist famously known for advocating the exploration of the therapeutic potential of psychedelic drugs as a cure-all for societies woes, "the most dangerous man in America." As a backlash to their role in the cultural upheaval of the 1960s, the majority of these drugs were declared illegal, driving hallucinogenic research and culture underground. Now, these drugs are in the midst of a revival, as new research indicates treatment options for a variety of mental illnesses and disorders, too valuable not to investigate. As psychedelic drug research bubbles back up to the surface in labs across the globe - we ask whether these drugs have a role beyond disease and if their use in creative practice will ever loose the stigma.  Our first guest, Rahel Debebe, front woman of folk-prog-jazz band Hejira, talks to us about seeing colors and shapes when she hears music and how that has influenced her creativity. Vocalist and song writer, Debebe has performed to sold-out audiences in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House. Hejira, will release their album Thread of Gold in February 2019. Later in the episode, we are joined by Dr. Charles Grob, Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the UCLA School of Medicine. He talks to us about the turbulent history of psychedelic drug research. Dr. Grob has conducted the first government approved psychobiological research study of MDMA, and was the principal investigator of an international research project in the Brazilian Amazon studying the visionary plant brew, Ayahuasca.  He has also published the first approved research investigation in decades on the safety and efficacy of psilocybin in the treatment of anxiety in patients with advanced-stage cancer. About Dr. Yewande Pearse: Born and bred in North London, Dr. Yewande Pearse completed her PhD in Neuroscience at King's College London, in 2016. She is now based in Los Angeles, where she works as a Research Fellow, developing a stem cell therapy treatment for a rare childhood brain disease. DECONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM meets professor Charles Grob. Dr. Grob has been the Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center since 1993. And even for a specialist on mood and anxiety disorders he’s extraordinarily sympathethic and charming. Professor Grob is a believer in the self-medication hypothesis of substance abuse. Which basically means that het hinks that if someone is using or abusing a substance it might be because of a biological or psychological lack that the subject tries to compensate for. He has published in the professional literature on a variety of topics, including adolescent development and psychopathology, cross-cultural models of substance use and misuse and the history of hallucinogens in psychiatry. His research has included the first FDA approved Phase 1 study of the physiological and psychological effects of MDMA, a multi-national, collaborative study of the Amazonian plant hallucinogen decoction, ayahuasca, in Brazil and a pilot investigation of the safety and efficacy of psilocybin in the treatment of anxiety in adult patients with advanced-stage terminal cancer. And on top of everything else he’s an expert on hallucinogenic literature and the author of the book Hallucinogens: a Reader which provides a good overview on the topic in case this discussion prompts you to find out more: https://www.amazon.com/Hallucinogens-Reader-New-Consciousness/dp/1585421669 http://www.harboruclapsych.com/charles-s-grob-m-d/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4XL_Hk_L5g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqTm50Rw0hU Until next, have a good time unit! Jonathan was alerted to her work and her resonance with Psychedelic Parenting when a listener passed along a digital copy of her 2000 PhD dissertation entitled Yes, Mom Took Acid: The Sociohistorical Influence of Prior Psychedelic Drug Use in Adults. We soon discovered that not only was she a WVC board member, but also working in a family practice that incorporated cannabis as a regular part of their work. In this talk, Jonathan and Dr. Mangini discuss the upcoming Women's Visionary Congress NYC Salon (where the Psychedelic Parenting Away Team will be tabling), the role of psychedelics in the history of the baby boomer generation, the growth of interest and understanding of death in American culture as the boomers "run out of runway," and Dr. Mangini's role in the resurgence of Psychedelic Studies though her efforts, with George Greer and Charles Grob on the 1998 Monograph Edition of The Journal of Psychoactive Drugs As always, we ask that if you find value in this work, that you consider making a tax-deductible donation to Psychedelic Parenting through our Fiscal Sponsor, MAPS, using the button below: donate-button TOPICS AND WEBSITES DISCUSSED IN THIS PODCAST: Women's Visionary Congress NYC Salon Tickets Psymposia's "Visionary Women" afterparty event Dr. Mangini's Bio (WVC board members) Speakers at NYC Salon Allyson Grey Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM) Katherine MacLean, PhD Julie Holland, MD Moody Bitches The Pot Book (editor) The Trips Festival Wikipedia entry The Trips Festival DVD The Merry Pranksters Wikipedia Entry Stanislav Grof Erowid Character Vault Personal Website Joan Halifax Wikipedia Entry Upaya Zen Center Bio Journal of Psychoactive Drugs 1998 Monograph Issue Betty Eisner Erowid Character Vault Wikipedia Entry The Trip Treatment by Michael Pollan Shpongle Ecofarm Conference The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead Tobacco: A Forgotten Healing Plant Dr Frank Lucido Alice In Wonderland Statue in Central Park Map LSD: Problem Child and Wonderdrug (Albert Hoffman 100th Birthday Symposium) Thanatology Order of the Good Death Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and Other Lessons from the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty Ask a Mortician YouTube Channel Undertaking L.A. - Roland Griffiths, trained as a behaviorist and holding senior appointments in psychiatry and neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University, is one of the nation’s leading drug-addiction researchers. Pollan quoting Griffiths: “There is such a sense of authority that comes out of the primary mystical experience that it can be threatening to existing hierarchical structures. We ended up demonizing these compounds. Can you think of another area of science regarded as so dangerous and taboo that all research gets shut down for decades? It’s unprecedented in modern science.” - Robert Jesse, founder of Council on Spiritual Practices (CSP) in 1993, former VP of Oracle. - Rick Doblin, founder of Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) in 1986. - Charles Grob, at U.C.L.A., who won F.D.A. approval in 2006 for a Phase I pilot study to assess the safety, dosing, and efficacy of psilocybin in the treatment of anxiety in cancer patients. - David Nichols, emeritus professor of pharmacology at Purdue University and a founder of the Heffter Research Institute in 1993, key funder of psychedelic research. - Robin Carhart-Harris and David Nutt of Imperial College, London. Aired 07/22/12 Did you know that LSD is being tested as a treatment for alcoholism? Or that psilocybin is being taken to ease the anxiety of late stage cancer patients? In government-sanctioned studies. Psychedelic substances have been used for ceremony and as medicine for millennia. Such properties were being cultivated and studied in the US in the 60s and early 70s until widespread and careless use of psychedelics and sensational media reports produced a backlash. I will talk with CHARLES GROB MD about the latest scientific research, including his own ground-breaking studies. And with JAMES FADIMAN about the vision, ideas and advice in his book, PSYCHEDELIC EXPLORERS: Safe, Therapeutic and Sacred Journeys. CHARLES S. GROB, M.D, Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the UCLA School of Medicine, conducted the first government approved psychobiological research study of MDMA, was the principal investigator on a research project in the Amazon studying the visionary plant brew, ayahuasca, and investigated the efficacy of psilocybin to treat anxiety in terminally ill patients. A founding board member of the Heffter Research Institute, devoted to fostering research on psychedelics, he is the editor of Hallucinogens: A Reader and co-editor with Roger Walsh of Higher Wisdom: Eminent Elders Explore the Continuing Impact of Psychedelics. JAMES FADIMAN did his undergraduate work at Harvard and his graduate work at Stanford, doing pioneering research with the Harvard Group, the West Coast Research Group in Menlo Park, and Ken Kesey. A former president of the Institute of Noetic Sciences and a professor of psychology, he currently teaches at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, CA, which he helped found in 1975. He is the author of PSYCHEDELIC EXPLORERS: Safe, Therapeutic and Sacred Journeys.

At the MAPS Psychedelic Science Conference 2010 with experiential journalist Rak Razam: * Rick Doblin talks about the almost 25-year history of MAPS, the Multi-Disciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies, the "end of the beginning of the Psychedelic Renaissance" and why Western culture is now ready for the psychedelic experience and a global spirituality. Rick discusses the return of the 60s elders and the new psychedelic generation, the spiritual approach to entheogens paralleling the medical psy-resurgence, the need to turn on, tune in and stay in the culture as we integrate the numinous, and much more... * Charles Grob outlines some of his landmark studies with entheogenic medicine, including the ayahuasca research of the early 1990s on serotonin-platelet rejuvenation after regular ayahuasca usage and the current cultural uptake; MDMA tests on volunteers and the difference between man-made and indigenous medicines; and psilocybin with late-stage cancer patients treating anxiety. Sacred medicines allow exploration of the great mysteries, Grob says, and induce mystical experiences that are at the root of all true healing... * Ralph Metzner discusses the PTSD-MDMA tests MAPS is sponsoring and the possibility of psychedelics as a soma for the masses; his history with Tim Leary and the Harvard years and the need to move drugs out of law enforcement and back into public health system. background image courtesy of Tim Parish and the Journeybook This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License.

Guest speaker: Dr. Preet Chopra PROGRAM NOTES: (Minutes : Seconds into program) 02:56 Preet describes the study he is working on at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center where he and Dr. Charles Grob are giving psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) to end-stage cancer patients who are also suffering from anxiety. 05:17 A description of the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the study. 11:01 Preet takes us through a typical session with a study participant. 12:04 "According to some of the research that was done before prohibition, it was found that people who had more internal experiences were more likely to get the psychological intervention we're going for with this." 24:03 "In my treatments as a psychiatrist I've never treated a psychedelic addiction. I've treated a lot of addicts who are addicted to a lot of stuff and who also used psychedelics, but that [psychedelic addiction] has never come into my emergency room or office." 29:39 "I think it's kind of ridiculous to be a scientist and a doctor and not investigate and try to understand how we can use these tools in a Western culture safely." 36:11 "I think that ultimately the true wisdom about these plants comes from shamanic tradition, however, in today's Western society people will often come to a psychiatrist to address the issue that in a different tribal kind of society they would seek out the shaman."
