Robert Charles, Author of Eagles and Evergreen Robert Charles and I examined the world, the challenges it poses to us from enemies both foreign and domestic, and the importance of those challenges being properly understood by the American people and those who wish to lead them in contending with such dangers and how they will do so. We also discussed the growing concerns about election integrity, not least the practice of giving non-citizens an illegal opportunity to vote in this fall's election. Todd Bensman, Senior Fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies Todd Bensman reported on his recent visit to the Darien Gap, his assessment of the opportunity being missed there to dramatically reduce illegal immigration into this country. And what is being done, it seems, to manipulate the influx of illegals temporarily and cynically for electoral purposes. Dede Laugesen, Executive Director at Save The Persecuted Christians & Matisse Perttula, Director of Save Armenia Dede Laugesen and I discussed with Matisse Perttula the Save Armenia campaign as an exemplary effort to try to save persecuted Christians, both some who have already been violently removed into Armenia and those who are now at risk of being assaulted in that country by Azerbaijan and Turkey. We also explored what might be done to deter further assaults, including depriving Azerbaijan of the honor of hosting a major international conference in November.

In "The Red Door: An Inspector Rutledge Mystery," the mother & son author team of Caroline and Charles, writing under the name Charles Todd, write the 12th in a series of Inspector Ian Rutledge Mysteries following British police inspector and World War I veteran Ian Rutledge. In this book, the inspector tries to solve a puzzle involving a lie, disappearance, and a woman's death. This discussion took place on a 2010 episode of "Conversations On The Coast with Jim Foster" originating in San Francisco, California.
In today's episode, we read yet another mystery titled A Game of Fear by Charles Todd. This book is #24 in the Inspector Rutledge series and follows Scotland Yard detective Ian Rutledge as he tries to solve a murder with no body. We chat through the plot details Harshini may or may not have missed, Pooja's favorite part of the book (Rutledge's crush on a woman who is barely in the book), and whether the book lives up to its title. Listen to hear what we thought!
It is 150 years since the overland telegraph between Adelaide and Darwin connected Australia to the world.
The Australian overland telegraph was a 3,200 km line connecting Port Augusta in South Australia to Darwin. It was completed in 1872 and allowed communication between Australia and the rest of the world. It was one of the great engineering feats of 19th-century Australia and was a significant milestone in Australia's development. The line was built due to the determination of one man, a government employee, Charles Todd. As we celebrate 150 years since the line was completed, Sharon Carleton looks at the Charles Todd story, who it turns out was the first pioneer of STEM, way before the acronym had come into use.

A Game of Fear: A Novel (Inspector Ian Rutledge Mysteries, 24) by Charles Todd In this newest installment of the acclaimed New York Times bestselling series, Scotland Yard's Ian Rutledge is faced with his most perplexing case yet: a murder with no body, and a killer who can only be a ghost. Spring, 1921. Scotland Yard sends Inspector Ian Rutledge to the sea-battered village of Walmer on the coast of Essex, where amongst the salt flats and a military airfield lies Benton Abbey, a grand manor with a storied past. The lady of the house may prove his most bewildering witness yet. She claims she saw a violent murder—but there is no body, no blood. She also insists she recognized the killer: Captain Nelson. Only it could not have been Nelson because he died during the war. Everyone in the village believes that Lady Benton's losses have turned her mind—she is, after all, a grieving widow and mother—but the woman Rutledge interviews is rational and self-possessed. And then there is Captain Nelson: what really happened to him in the war? The more Rutledge delves into this baffling case, the more suspicious tragedies he uncovers. The Abbey and the airfield hold their secrets tightly. Until Rutledge arrives, and a new trail of death follows…

This episode looks at folk poetry, with discussions of four poetry-themed collections in the American Folklife Center. Guest Anne Holmes of the Library of Congress Literary Initiatives Division discusses “Living Nations, Living Words,” the signature project of the Poet Laureate Joy Harjo. Harjo, the first Native American Poet Laureate, has curated a collection of poetry by Native American poets, which includes recordings of the poets reading their work. The recordings are part of the American Folklife Center archive. The Literary Initiatives division has also created a Story Map to place the poets and poems in a geographic context. The poet M.L. Smoker reads her work “The Book of the Missing, Murdered, and Indigenous—Chapter 1.” Guest Michelle Stefano of the American Folklife Center discusses “Rhyming the Archive,” an event in which members of the poetry slam team Split This Rock wrote poems inspired by materials in the archive and performed them at an event at the Library of Congress. The poet Marjan Naderi reads her work “The Lessons My Mother Taught Me While Preparing Dinner.” Guest Kerry Ward of the Veterans History Project introduces VHP and discusses VHP’s November, 2019, Occupational Poetry Panel, which brought together four Veteran poets to perform their work. Meezie Hermansen performs her work “Tools of the Trade.” Stephen Winick and John Fenn discuss a poem in the American Folklife Center’s archive called “Colorado Morton’s Last Ride.” It’s a ten-minute narrative poem recited by a man named Fred Soule at the Farm Security Administration (FSA) camp in Visalia, California on September 2, 1941. The poem was recorded on an instantaneous disc by Charles Todd and Robert Sonkin, two fieldworkers collecting folksongs for the Library of Congress. Winick discusses the research that led him to discover that the poem, whose original title was “Colorado Morton’s Ride,” was written by Pulitzer-Prize-winner Leonard Bacon and Montana cowboy Rivers Browne. He also reveals the identity of Soule, a public information officer for the FSA. We hear Soule read an excerpt of the poem, and Winick and Fenn promise to release the full poem as a bonus episode.

Simon Prebble was among the first narrators honored as Golden Voices in 1995. He is much loved for his narrations of historical mysteries, literary fiction such as THE REMAINS OF THE DAY by Kazuo Ishiguro, and romance titles, such as Stephanie Laurens’s Cynster series. He won an Audie Award in Romance for his narration of Laurens’s UNTAMED BRIDE. AudioFile has honored 39 of his titles with Earphones Awards. On today’s episode, AudioFile’s Robin Whitten and host Jo Reed discuss A DIVIDED LOYALTY, Charles Todd’s newest mystery starring Inspector Rutledge. Simon Prebble is the perfect narrator for this series, as he’s so skilled at highlighting the historical details that are the hallmark of the series. Simon narrates with ease as he helps create an almost palpable atmosphere that runs through the story, set in the mysterious Avebury with its neolithic standing stones. This is the 22nd title in the series but makes for an enjoyable listen even for those new to the Inspector’s tales. Published by Harper Audio. Writing novels—never mind entire series—takes determination, persistence, imagination, and craft. Charles Todd has added to those natural challenges the joys and complications of creating a single persona from a mother/son team. In A Cruel Deception (William Morrow, 2019), the eleventh in their beloved Bess Crawford series, the strengths of their long collaboration are on full display. Bess, a British nurse, worked with the wounded throughout the First World War. In A Cruel Deception, the war has ended, and Bess faces the future with some trepidation. So it comes almost as a relief when her former matron requests help finding Lawrence Minton, the matron’s son, who has gone missing during the peace talks in Paris. The search goes well, and Bess tracks Minton to a rural farmhouse, where she confronts him with his addiction to laudanum. He wants nothing to do with her efforts to cure him. Despite his refusal to heal, she soldiers on, aided by a young Frenchwoman who loves him. Bess soon realizes that the root of Minton’s troubles lies in the past, but where? Only then does it become clear that Minton has an enemy, one who will stop at nothing to settle old scores. If you like this book as much as I did, check out Charles Todd’s Ian Rutledge mysteries (twenty to date), the latest of which, A Divided Loyalty, is due out in February 2020. C. P. Lesley is the author of nine novels, including Legends of the Five Directions (The Golden Lynx, The Winged Horse, The Swan Princess, The Vermilion Bird, and The Shattered Drum), a historical fiction series set during the childhood of Ivan the Terrible, and Song of the Siren, published in 2019. Fish mongers recorded on the streets of Harlem in the 1930s. An 8-year-old girl’s impromptu news cast made on a toy recorder in a San Diego store. Lyndon Johnson talking to FBI director J. Edgar Hoover a week after President Kennedy’s assassination in 1963. Sounds lost and found. As The Kitchen Sisters prepare to launch their new series The Keepers, about activist archivists, rogue librarians, curators, collectors, historians and the collections they keep—they re-visit their own “accidental archive” of recordings amassed over the years. And Voices from the Dust Bowl, produced by Peabody Award winning producer Barrett Golding for the Lost & Found Sound series. In the 1930s, hundreds of thousands of people from Oklahoma and Arkansas traveled to California, fleeing the dust storms and poverty of the Depression. In the summer of 1940, Charles Todd was hired by the Library of Congress to visit the federal camps where many of these migrants lived, to create an audio oral history of their stories. Todd carried a 50-pound Presto recorder from camp to camp that summer, interviewing the migrant workers. He made hundreds of hours of recordings on acetate and cardboard discs. Todd was there at the same time that John Steinbeck was interviewing many of the same people in these camps, for research on a new novel called "The Grapes of Wrath." Producer Barrett Golding went though this massive, rare collection of Todd's recordings to create this story of the Dust Bowl refugees narrated by Charles Todd.
