House projects: A true test of love, patience, and whether or not you'll make it out still speaking to each other. From quick fixes that turn into weekend-long sagas to the ultimate challenge—building bunk beds without a meltdown, Matt and Amy dive into the reality of tackling projects as a couple. Hanging curtains? Should've hired a professional. Grocery runs? Why do we even have a list if we're not following it? Building a house? Maybe too much bonding time. Bunk beds? Nothing like holding a power drill and biting your tongue at the same time. Of course, we're not alone—so we're bringing in Reddit's finest home project fails to remind us that at least we didn't burn the house down (yet).
While the Department of Government Efficiency looks to tighten the belt on spending, Americans are noticing the speed at which they're working towards making cuts. Former Congressman Garret Graves (R-LA) notes that although DOGE's effort seems aggressive, the U.S. is on an unsustainable financial trajectory. Through DOGE's recent work, they have uncovered the Biden administrations misuse of taxpayers' dollars, which Garret argues that just because it has merit doesn't mean it needs funding from U.S. taxpayer dollars. Uphill battle: President Trump has announced that he wants to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency due to its alleged inability to help those recover from major disasters. To avoid potentially being cut, FEMA must find ways to sustain itself more efficiently and cheaper. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Brett Westervelt is currently the Head of Design at Instagram. We spoke about his life and career, from growing up in Oklahoma, tinkering with his grandfather, to taking a course at Stanford, experiencing startup life, and growing as a leader. This episode has tons of nuggets about how he thinks of building strong teams to create great software, how he thinks about design at scale, and how to keep craft at a high bar.
One of the things that sets Proof to Product apart from other people teaching about wholesale is the breadth and depth of not only my personal knowledge but also the fact that we bring in a variety of other perspectives from buyers to sales reps to consultants and manufacturers. This wide lens allows us to share best practices and current trends that we're seeing in the market currently. We're not sharing one narrow viewpoint about how to sell wholesale. We have amassed decades of knowledge through the collaborations and inclusivity that we foster in our community, supporting thousands of product-based industry leaders. This week's episode is an example of that. Our guest today is Kimberley Yurkiewicz, a 25-year veteran in the stationery industry. She has expertise from a variety of perspectives as a retailer and buyer, as a sales rep, as a manufacturer, and as a Paper Camp speaker. She's also been a previous guest on this podcast. She was on episode 9 of Proof to Product way back in 2017, and that is still one of our most popular episodes to date. You can go back and listen if you want to hear why wholesale catalogs are an important sales tool. Kimberley and her husband, Zach currently own Measure Twice, a paper and gift shop in Brooklyn, which was highlighted as one of New York City's best in New York Magazine last year. Kimberley has long been a proponent of an old-school approach to small business, cheerleading for brick and mortar, and making the effort to steer clear of Amazon. She also thinks it's okay, even essential, to include politics in your business plan. On today's episode, Kimberley is sharing the challenges she faced having owned and operated 3 brick and mortar retail shops through challenging times, why she chooses not to use fair when making wholesale purchases, and her preferences for how she likes to be pitched by wholesale brands. Today's episode is sponsored by our Unlock Buyer Secrets Interview series. To make a strong first impression with wholesale buyers, we need to do a few things really well: We need to make it easy for stores to purchase from us We need to have clear pricing and terms & conditions We need to clearly communicate and add value at each touchpoint We need to focus on building strong relationships with our customers. And all of this becomes infinitely easier when we actively listen to our customers. This on-demand interview series will give you a competitive edge by providing an exclusive window into what buyers want and need from you. And, the best part, its only $27 bucks. Lauren and Cody kick off the interview by talking about what a CFP® is, and how someone becomes one. The curriculum covers a wide range of financial information. Cody describes financial planning as a bridge between your financial ecosystem and your family's goals and values. Cody argues that financial planners get a bad rap because of some financial advisors trying to take over management of your investments and sell you insurance on top of it. Some people even call themselves financial planners who don't do any financial planning. Lauren just has to ask about why he is so pro DIY investing – doesn't that mean he wouldn't have a job if everyone took the DIY approach? There's actually a lot of demand for DIYers who need some planning help. To Lauren, Cody's approach sounds like a nice middle ground. What matters for DIY investors is their time, temperament, and talent. Anyone interested in DIY investing must undertake the first step, which is data gathering. Temperament is important, too. When the stock market is down, do you skip dessert at a restaurant to save money? Lauren points out that you need to do the data gathering even if you end up hiring help. As you go through your data gathering, keep an eye out for evidence of what you value. Aligning your financial planning with your values is important. Cody then points out that balancing time, energy, and financial resources helps bring clarity to your life and financial plan. Lastly, Cody points out that our physical health, mental health, spiritual practices, relationships, and financials are interconnected. Your finances should be supporting your life. If you liked this episode, you'll also like episode 149: Personal Finance is Personal with Mark Roussin or episode 131 Budgeting for Dummies. About Cody: Cody Garrett, CFP®, is an advice-only financial planner and educator passionate about helping DIY investors on the path to financial independence and through early retirement. Hey there, hero!My grandfather was a funny, smart cookie. He wasn't a performer, rather my grandfather was a plumber.I'm not really shocked anymore at how many lessons I learned from him, even though he was a tradesman, about how to execute my occupation and run my business. One of the basic rules he lived by was to be damn sure he had a measure of a job before he executed the plumbing needed. He measured, then measured again, just to be sure. Then he cut his pipes. And they always seem to fit perfectly together. It wasn't hesitancy, it was being sure, and then double sure. Can you see how you might use this concept in creating your characters and doing your work? Would it be worth it to you take a moment and take a second measure? Wood working carpenters have a saying, “Measure Twice – Cut Once”. Obviously the take away here is to slow down and carefully calculate your measuring prior to sawing a piece of wood. Careless measuring can cause a bad cut and a wasted piece of wood. We carry this same metaphor into youth baseball here so listen in and see the similar saying we use in youth baseball player development. Carpenters advise applies to baseball too. Should software devs measure twice and cut once?
On today's show we are talking about measurement diligence. People are human and they make mistakes. Often these potential mistakes are not checked, double checked or triple checked. You have no doubt heard the mantra, measure twice, cut once. Measuring sounds easy. In some ways it is. You take out your tape measure and you just measure. Diligence requires attention to detail. Those who make a lot of measurement errors are also prone to missing the details in a contract, or the details in a report. It requires a lot of focus and diligence to catch errors. If you think that errors are rare, you might be more prone to observer bias. This brings me to the most overlooked role in any organization. Quality assurance is a mandatory function in any business in my experience. The review process is a formal process that can't be skipped. So often I work with consultants who aim to deliver their work on the deadline. They are assuming that there are no mistakes. They are assuming no review time in their schedule. If you actually do perform a review, you are guaranteed to be late. If you find an error, which is likely, then you are guaranteed to be even later than late. I started today's show talking about measuring. But measuring is a metaphor for any critical item. It could be a test result or a consultant report. Each time a consultant makes an error, it can result in delays in securing building permits or in redesign of the project. If people are not used to the review process, they might be inclined to charge extra for that service. ------------- Host: Victor Menasce email: podcast@victorjm.com

In this episode, we will cover: - the topic itself - the poll results - the psychological shift from saving to spending in retirement - tactics to solve this behavioral challenge And much more. Nonillion… That's a number so big, I hadn't heard it before recording this episode. Should you budget and track every single dollar you spend? Should you put 10 percent of your income into your 401k? These are just two of the typical questions I get asked when it comes to money management. In fact, when you think about the hundreds of decisions the average person is faced with in their financial journey, you end up with a nonillion different possible outcomes. This week I brought on Cody Garrett to make these decisions a little clearer. With dual degrees in music theory and contemporary piano performance, Cody shifted gears in 2018 to focus on his growing interest in finances. Having served as a music director for renowned Broadway shows to now, sharing actionable personal finance advice, Cody's journey is a testament to his drive and adaptability. Cody runs his firm that caters to DIY investors on the path of early retirement, and also educates over 1000 financial advisors, impacting the future of financial planning in a meaningful way. Just because you're a do-it-yourself investor doesn't mean you have to do it alone. -Cody Garrett Key Takeaways: Teaching is the best way to learn Understanding advice only financial planning The Transition Zone of financial planning: tax planning Traditional vs. Roth Contributions Marginal vs Effective Tax Rates The “Kiddie Tax” and 529 plans Mentions: https://bestinterest.blog/financial-advisor-questions/ More of Guest:

In this episode, Alex discusses the importance of thoughtful planning in marketing, drawing on the timeless adage, "measure twice, cut once." Using a real-life example from a marketing consulting experience with a construction client looking to expand into remodeling, we explore how the client's insistence on a single mailer led to disappointing results. The episode highlights the crucial role of a well-coordinated plan, emphasizing that a solitary ad or press release is rarely effective. Instead, we advocate for a more strategic approach, tailoring the frequency of press releases to specific goals, whether it's building brand awareness, improving search engine rankings, or addressing time-sensitive topics. The takeaway is clear: proper planning may seem slow, but it's often more cost-effective in the long run. Make your marketing strategies memorable by measuring twice and cutting once. +++ Read and subscribe FREE to Alex's Newsletter, All the Fits That's News Photo by energepic.com: https://www.pexels.com/photo/tool-set-on-plank-175039 Want to be a guest? When drummer Zach Barocas began to play with his legendary band Jawbox again in late 2017 to rehearse for some reunion shows, he wasn't sure exactly how that might play out given they hadn't been in the same room together for about 20 years. Turns out, it went so well they're still playing shows now and in fact will be playing Riot Fest in September 2022. Zach has been creatively busy with his bands The Up On In, The Bells, and now New Freedom Sounds with some guys like J Robbins, Gordon Withers and Tom Cisneros that makes music that is related to but doesn't live in the same house as standard jazz. It's a very fresh take on that medium built and arranged by Zach over the pandemic months, at the same time that he and his wife have opened a boutique stationary shop in Brooklyn called Measure Twice that has become a...calling card for Zach.
