Comely is an adjective that means pleasant or attractive to look at. Our word of the day comes from the Old English period and once meant ‘frail' or ‘weak.' Its meaning has been modified more recently and it can now be thought of as a synonym for handsome or beautiful. When I entered the ballroom, I thought all those people were gawking at me because my tuxedo made me look particularly comely. It turned out that all those stares had less to do with my appearance than with the fact that I had forgotten to remove the tag from my jacket.

église AB Lausanne ; KJV Psalms 147 Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely. The LORD doth build up Jerusalem: he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel. He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. The LORD lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground. Sing unto the LORD with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God: Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains. He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry. He delighteth not in the strength of the horse: he taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man. ...

Decent 1. Becoming; fit; suitable, in words, behavior, dress and ceremony; as decent language; decent conduct or actions; decent ornaments or dress. 2. Comely; not gaudy or ostentatious. 3. Not immodest. 4. In popular language, moderate, but competent; not large; as a decent fortune. So a decent person is one not highly accomplished, nor offensively rude.

It's Slashtober, and we're celebrating the only way we know how––by watching and discussing low-rent franchise horror films full of amateur Canadian actors and grizzly simulated murder. Up today is JASON X (2001), the unlikely 10th film in the beyond long in the tooth FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise where Jason gets frozen, unthawed 400 years in the future, and then shot into space! What does he find there? Comely 19-year-old science students doing science stuff in belly shirts, of course. Time to murder them with a space machete.
This week I share some really top tips on sketching in a café - including capturing those hard-working waitresses - and how to capture the life and magic of an on-location sketch in a final piece, especially for a commission. It's also the one where I tell you I'm packing in my fledging college-going life due to a small matter of thoroughly underestimating my time. A bit naïve but sometimes you only know when you try…
église AB Lausanne ; KJV Psalms 33 Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth. He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD. By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect. ...

The man behind one of the most enduring independent characters of all time, Captain Canuck, brings his maple leaves to the Dollar Bin Bandits! That's right, Richard Comely joins Oren and special guest host Sean McMillan to reflect on the genesis of our super neighbor to the north. The Captain made his debut in 1975 and became an immediate sensation, with the first issue outselling all other comic books in Canada that year. Comely stuck with the character through thick and thin, publishing Captain Canuck comics sporadically in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 5, 2021 is: comely KUM-lee adjective 1 : pleasurably conforming to notions of good appearance, suitability, or proportion 2 : having a pleasing appearance : not homely or plain Examples: "No one looks particularly handsome or comely wearing a face mask." — Robin Givhan, The Washington Post, 26 May 2020 "The burning bush is aflame. These low shrubs wait until most of their bigger cousins, the oaks and maples, give up their leaves before offering their own subtle but comely color as a last hurrah of autumn." — The Wilton (Connecticut) Bulletin, 12 Nov. 2020 Did you know? Although comely is now typically used to describe the appearance of human beings, it was once used more broadly of other appealing things, such as fine clothing. Comely can be traced back to Old English words variously meaning "glorious," "lively," or "fine." If you are looking to pretty up your prose or poetry with additional words meaning "beautiful," English is well-supplied with them. Aside from beautiful itself, we have lovely, handsome, pretty, fair, good-looking, gorgeous, ravishing, and even well-favored.
Belle Gunness wanted what every American wants: the American Dream. And through insurance fraud and murder, she eventually found it. "Hell's Belle," as she was known, used strychnine -- and a meat cleaver -- to kill an estimated 40 victims she met through personal ads, almost all in Indiana. The popular theory about Belle? That she managed to elude authorities for years by transforming into a woman named Esther Carlson.

Happy Valentines! Like a neglectful boyfriend we forgot and are late on valentines. But to make it up to you like a great boyfriend, we’re going to talk about Liam Neeson and if he’s racist. Is that the sound of a fire hydrant spilling out onto the street while kids come out to play under it on a hot summer’s day in New York City or is it just you getting cumly. Yes, Big Bang Theory’s writers messed up teaching us a new word in “comely” but not as much of a mistake as Rob not putting his headphones in and leaving himself to get roasted.

"Comely widow seeking wealthy gentleman to combine fortunes." La Porte, Indiana late 1800’s Belle Gunness was looking for love, wealth, security, and a good man to feed to her hogs. Well, the times were prosperous for Belle and she was sent not merely one suitor, but over 40. Many were never seen or heard from again and if you ask the widow, well, they never came to her farm. Kick back this week with your adult beverage (your going to need it) and listen as Chelsea unwinds the tale of the six foot tall, two hundred pound Norwegian-American killer, Belle Gunness cast her web far and wide.
It takes true talent to fit five-plus bad accents into an episode that doesn't even leave American soil, but the Lit & Liquor crew rises admirably to the challenge. Weigh in on our first ever romance novel face off, pitting the classic cowboy rebel against the more spiritual but no less ferocious Indian (hereafter referred to as Native American because we're politically correct like that). Jamison, our Liquor of the Week, is featured in our Cowboy Cocktail and paired with “Robbing Banks and Stealing Hearts” by Kathleen Rice Adams. On the other side of the ring is our first attempt at a ‘shrub cocktail' with a Butternut Squash and Sage Shrub cocktail to go with Madeline Baker's “The Spirit Path.” Who will win and make it to Romance Novel Face Off Round Two against the Highland Lord? Listen to find out!Next week join us for the continuation of our Harry Potter series with “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.” ‘Nuff said.
