Today, we tackle the pervasive feelings of overwhelm, underpayment, and burnout that so many business owners experience (if you haven't burnt out in your business yet, then I daresay you haven't been in business long enough). So let's rethink how we can handle our workload, set boundaries, and prioritise our individual, collective, and systemic wellbeing, to minimise the deleterious effects and maximise our profits, satisfaction, and happiness. You'll learn: Your earnings as self-care – why financial wellness is crucial for personal wellbeing as a business owner The value of compartmentalising to better manage your stress Why prioritising is oh-so-important and why this is the first thing we lose when we're overwhelmed The biggest misperception overwhelmed owners have and why you don't need a 10-year plan The quick-and-easy hack to make better decisions when you're over it Setting better boundaries with clients and why this is oh-so-important when it comes to stress and energy management The highly dramatic, common misunderstanding that many owners have in relation to improving their cashflow, clients and confidence – and what to do instead Why November is an ideal time to evaluate your business and make adjustments before the year-end rush How to build systems in your business that enable smooth operations when you're not at full capacity Building intimacy with strangers through screens – and why it also helps build your wellbeing and resilience. For someone devoting themselves to the sport of CrossFit, the way they train and approach competition is pretty clear-cut. Similarly, for the person doing classes to be healthy and stay fit, the way you train is clear-cut. But for the person who wants to do local competition, treat CrossFit as a recreational sport, but isn't interested in overstretching themselves, it can be more challenging.  It's this messy middle ground that can be hard for athletes and coaches to navigate. The sport of CrossFit is different from the training methodology, and it's a challenge to try to get the best from both. In this episode of the podcast, we discuss our experiences working in gyms where this comes up and remote coaching athletes who try to do this. We also talk about some ways CrossFitters can take themselves a little less seriously in their training but still get something from the competitive side of the sport. We also discuss the recent move towards endurance activities for many CrossFitters as they get older and transition out of the sport.  If you're not already subscribed to our newsletter, head over to www.legionsc.com to get a weekly selection of training tips and our favorite articles. On the eve of the Paris Olympics, Kara Goucher joins Ross to put their minds to the fans' dilemma - how do we celebrate the performances we see from the best athletes in the world while we struggle to trust their credibility amidst perverse incentives, suspicious behaviours and an anti-doping system we know is far from effective?Goucher is uniquely positioned to offer insights on this question: an elite athlete who reached the podium in global track and marathon events, she not only saw behind the secretive curtain of doping, but lived it as an athlete in the Nike Oregon Project. She eventually became a whistleblower, before transitioning into a new phase of her sporting life - a commentator for NBC, where she now brings track and field performances to life. But how does she compartmentalise the conflicting emotions of doubt and joy to interpret and promote the best performances ever achieved by athletes? She explains her views, talks candidly about the challenges of being a whistleblower, and how athletes should respond to the mistrust and skepticism directed towards them. Finally, she picks her three best events to watch from Paris, and even offers a potential surprise winner of the men's 1500m gold medal.Show notes:Become a Discourse member and join the conversation. This year's quarter-finals workouts were well received by the CrossFit community as a whole. Many enjoyed the simplicity of the workouts, which provided a good challenge for athletes of various levels. We saw workouts that were more compartmentalised than in previous years. There was less chaos, simpler skills, and no crushingly high volume of work on things like GHD sit-ups. The workouts this year actually present some useful retests and KPIs for athletes to use in their training. In this episode, we discuss what we liked and didn't like about the workouts, where we see their utility in testing and benchmarks, and how we will change our programming to adjust to these changes.  If you're not already subscribed to our newsletter, head over to www.legionsc.com to get a weekly selection of training tips and our favorite articles. Last week we were joined by the amazing Bev Williams-Krause and uncovered more stories that I thought possible. Little did I know at the time that we would be back for part two of this conversation for this episode. Bev knows that fashion has always played a huge part in her life and in this episode, we touch on how she opened her own Bridal Boutique in a gorgeous 17th century village in Staffordshire (UK). In doing so she helped brides see past the unrealistic images in bridal magazines and focused on encouraging brides to explore dress designs based on their own individual uniqueness by embracing their bodies (instead of longing to look like a model with no curves). Bev and I chat together easily again for this episode and talk about: Feeling confident about our bodies in midlife (even though our bodies are continually changing). Her immigration to Australia and shifting to new beginning after copious amounts of research. Surgically induced menopause at the age of 40 and ongoing challenges she faces with HRT. Her breast implant journey, the benefits and ramifications long-term that many women are not aware of. Explant surgery, including rupture, symptoms, and the difference post operation. As always, Bev's positive energy and outlook on life are contagious. I encourage you to follow Bev via Instagram https://www.instagram.com/theirismaystyle/. You can also reach her by email at theirismaystyle@gmail.com. To revisit or listen to part one of this conversation you can follow the link here. “One trait amongst elite Chiefs is they just get back on the horse every day. No matter what's happened the day before, they just keep turning up and delivering.”   In today's minisode I am going to share with you something that perhaps we haven't spoken about as much on the show previously, and these are the 5 Mindsets of elite CEOs and Chiefs. What's important to know is that these 5 Mindsets are not necessarily demonstrated all of the time by our great leaders; we're not pretending as though they're flawless. One of the other great things we have learned about CEOs and Chiefs over the years is that they come in all colours of the rainbow and they are really such a diverse group of people. Remember, our definition of a true chief is not necessarily that you are in a CEO role, it's actually that you have found your level, a role that is right for you and that is aligned to your values, and one that allows you to demonstrate your skill and achieve a level of mastery.

After his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, together they created The Good Glow, a wellness company, with a hugely popular podcast and number one best selling book, Glow, to inspire people to live fulfilled and healthier lives. In this episode, Jamie takes us through discovering he had MS and what he felt contributed to this diagnosis. He also shares the series of adversities he faced in only a few years after the MS diagnosis, losing his father to cancer, and his wife being diagnosed with breast cancer several months after giving birth. We explore our sometimes unhealthy capacity to compartmentalise our struggles and how it generally exacerbates our problems. While Jaime shares how he is grateful for his experiences and what they have taught him in terms of resilience, the changes he has made to his life, and for ultimately becoming more aware of what matters most to him in life - moments & time with his family and helping others.Whether you are struggling with something presently in your life, facing adversity, or are finding it difficult to share your problems with others, this episode will provide you with plenty of inspiration, encouragement, and new perspectives, while providing numerous reminders of what truly matters in life. How is adversity showing up in your life? Do you need support to manage it well? Not just to get through, but to work creatively with it so that it can lead to growth and wisdom instead of shutting down.   I notice that responding to adversity can take many forms. Compartmentalising, avoiding or being overwhelmed are a few that I see a lot in my work.   This makes so much sense in the immediate face of illness, bereavement, career crisis or other challenging experiences, but they are not good long-term solutions.   I know that therapy offers a way to process and allow emotion instead of leaving it stuck in the body, usually in the heart, where it can lead to illness and discomfort.   Together we allow, process, and heal. We build a safe container where emotion is released and understood, and the heart can rebuild.   Over time, there is a flowering which is the product of the work we do.   Acceptance blossoms, there is a softening, warmth, connection and expansion which leads to more joy, love and intimacy.   To find out more about the Bali retreat, click here.

Not everyone who starts out with you is capable of going where God wants to take you. Sometimes they don't have the emotional capacity required. Other times their vision differs from yours. So how can you know when it's time to exit a relationship? Avoid relationships that leave you depleted. This calls for establishing clear boundaries for the relationship up front. You don't have time to spend your life straightening out misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and injured egos. How far are you willing to go? How much are you inclined to invest? When you overspend your budget, you go broke. Bankrupting yourself emotionally and physically to make someone else feel needed might sound noble, but it's not. Emotionally and physically bankrupt people end up with everything from nervous breakdowns to extramarital affairs. And even when they don't, they fail to reach their God-given destination in life because they're dragging too much weight. When you feel a relationship is not working, pause and take a look. View the situation objectively instead of emotionally, examining all the facets of it. Sometimes certain aspects of a relationship should be terminated, and other areas maintained. It's possible to have relationships that work in one area but not in another. Compartmentalising will save many important relationships because it requires you to see them in sections. It's possible to remove a section and still have a lot left to enjoy. Yes, it takes work and communication, but it is often worth it. There may be common interests that need to be maintained, while others need to be invalidated before all is lost.

Why Having Structure in Your Day is so Important and How to do it

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 27, 2020 13:18

In this episode, Jeannette talks about why having structure in your life is important. How it can help you to get through times like the ones we are living through now.   Jeannette explains how she has followed her mentor´s advice to manage her time and become far more successful and productive as a result. She shares the method she used. An approach that is flexible enough for anyone to implement and use to get rid of that stressful feeling that there are not enough hours in the day.   KEY TAKEAWAYS You cannot extend time, but you can manage how you use that time. Everyone has a 24hr day. Yet some people get more done than others. Look, in detail at what you are doing with your time and ask yourself - Should you be doing it? Does it add value to your life? Be sure to take action, after your review. Use the start, stop, continue model, which Jeannette explains in the podcast, to rework how you spend your day. Don´t be afraid to delegate. Be ruthless when clearing out your diary. Make sure that you are spending time on your priorities rather than other people´s priorities. Compartmentalising your diary keeps you organised, while still providing some flexibility. Don´t forget to include time to strategise and work on your long-term goals. Create the right environment and routines to manage your time. Little things like turning off notifications while working make a huge difference. Starting your day in the right way will help throughout the rest of the day. Stick with it. Usually, it takes 21 to 30 days to turn a positive change into a long-term habit. Stop trying to manage your time - instead, manage your life.   BEST MOMENTS ‘You can't really manage time because it is what it is. But you can manage your life.’ ‘Take a good hard look at how you're spending your time. Who you're spending time with and what you're spending time on.’ ‘Stick with it. Society today teaches us to disregard or avoid our feelings and emotions. Because of this, our coping mechanism is to sweep these emotions under the rug. We push them down so far that they manifest into stress. Meditation and mindfulness are powerful tools that we can use to avoid overwhelm and burnout. In this episode, we deep dive into how we can use breathwork, meditation, and mindfulness to manage and reduce stress and avoid burnout. Our breath is something we can always come back to. It is our anchor during stressful times. Being able to go back to your breath and using it as a tool to center yourself is so powerful. When we are mindful, we are present and aware. By being present, we can show up as better versions of ourselves and for the people around us. I hate labels. I really hate them. We, humans give power to it without realizing the weight. Communication is a 2-way model. What you say, can be used with or against you at any point of time. I was so affected because I didn't want to see the day, that masses would misconstrue the magic in podcasting in a negative light. Also, I know how much good intentions & hard work go into podcasting, hence, I feel for the trio. As a woman, I also know how trigger words can trip me back to memory lane of a haunted past. This is more than evident why compartmentalizing is critical. I said this once and I'll say it again in a positive light, content creators are never content. Myself, included. That's why we started on this journey because we want to project that belief in our heads that we can bring something bigger & better to the table. However, curating your content to the degree of compromising your creativity is a very, very slippery slope. I've been there so many times. I almost got into hot soup for this but, "You can dislike Michael Jackson, but you can love his music too". I'll stop copywriting now so you can enjoy this episode.

In today's episode I am joined by the remarkable Alex Flynn, who is an adventurist. Alex was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease at 36 years old (since 2008) and decided to raise funds for and awareness of Parkinson's disease - since then he has undertaken some of the most gruelling challenges around the world. In this episode we talked all about the reality of the disease, the incredible challenges he has undertaken to raise money for Parkinson's UK and to try to find a cure. How he uses his mind to keep his body going during these challenges and how mentally compartmentalising his pain through them, is what has allowed him to achieve the things he has. “Rarely does one hear about such an inspirational and heroic Briton as Alex Flynn. The challenges he has successfully undertaken would be considered seriously hard by anyone's standards and are, in my view, independently worthy of recognition.” – Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE   Alex's diagnosis became the catalyst in his life for showing people the possibility of creating positive change in the face of adversity. He can be found doing some of the more complex, unexpected and surprising challenges across the planet to raise awareness and hopefully more than £1million towards vital research to find a cure.    Under the banner of a challenge entitled 10MillionMetres, Alex has completed many marathons, ultra endurance races, and triathlons, examples of which include:   Completing the gruelling Marathon des Sables (250 km race across the Sahara Desert);   running 160 miles across the Bavarian Alps in 52 hours;   1,457 miles from London to Rome in 30 days to meet the Pope (400 miles of which was run with a stress fractured right tibia and completing the first 20 marathons in 10 days); and   becoming the first person to traverse the 3,256 miles from Santa Monica to New York using four distinct disciplines. He achieved this distance in 35 days and appeared on BBC One, One show over two consecutive nights.   In 2013 he crossed 200km of the Amazon Jungle, climbed and ran 90 km of the Dolomites and 236 km across the Colorado Rockies, achieving all three within an 8-week period;    On the 24th January 2014, the 10MillionMetres Challenge was completed at the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. He had covered a distance more than 6,200 miles around the world.   In the summer of 2015, he competed in the Men's Health USA Ultimate Guy Competition, successfully reaching the final nine competitors out of over 1000 including Special Forces and the US Marines.  He was also honoured by the then UK Prime Minister, David Cameron.   2016 brought a new challenge of completing 5,566 press-ups in 22 days to raise funds and awareness of PTSD, which affects military personnel and first responders. Alex managed to continue for 18 days reaching total of 3,762 press-ups before his shoulder gave out.   In February 2017, Alex returned from the Arctic after attempting a 450 km expedition of Sweden's Kungsleden (Kings trail) in freezing temperatures of -29°C. His participation was cut short due to Alex ripping a tendon in his right ankle. Undeterred, he continued to pull a 135lb pulk and 10kg backpack across a further 25km, including two mountain passes before the onset of hypothermia caused Alex to call it a day.    In 2018, he undertook the brutal and extremely challenging Lost Islands Ultra in Fiji, flying round the world to present the Alex Flynn award for and on behalf of the Cure Parkinson's Trust and two weeks after finishing the Fiji ultra, Alex completed the Virgin Money London Marathon.   In September 2018 Alex flew to British Columbia, Canada to take part in Primal Quest. As part of a team, which included five times world adventure racing Champion Mike Klosser, they took on the Primal Quest Pursuit Race across 240 miles of mountainous and challenging terrain including glaciers, and white water rapids in big Bear Country. The team completed the challenge in four days and five hours despite Alex suffering badly with Parkinson's and also a slipped disc in his neck cutting off any feeling to his right arm and hand.   So far in 2020, during lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, Alex decided to take on and complete his Isolation Double Everest Challenge. The idea was simple, to raise money for Parkinson's UK, Alex would climb a vertical Marathon (26.21 miles/42.196 m) up the stairs in his house.  This required him to climb and descend his stairs 3516 times covering approx 210,600 stairs. The distance vertically would be the same as 2.3 times the height of Everest. It took Alex 7.5 days to successfully complete the ascent.    Sir Ranulph Fiennes, OBE, stated that Alex's effort was "Herculean" emphasising both the physical and mental strength to achieve the distance.   There's more to come...   Alex says: “I've decided to do this as there has to be better treatments or even a cure for a disease that robs, the young and old alike, of their independence, their ability to move, talk, swallow, have sex, write, in fact everything most people take for granted. If I told you that the youngest person diagnosed was a 2 year old boy you might come close to experiencing the anger I feel towards this disease. We have to do something!”   “I want a cure for millions around the planet and hope you do too. Together we can make change happen!” #KeepMoving    www.alexflynn.co.uk

When we consider our health & well-being, it's easy to focus on what we eat or how much we exercise. These things feel more tangible and accessible than the more intangible practices we can do to calm our minds or transform destructive thoughts into thoughts that promote joy and inner well-being. But are they so different? In this episode, I get curious about how we sometimes compartmentalise certain practices as "spiritual", which makes them feel mystical & less accessible. Can we start to approach meditation as a very down-to-earth practice integral to our health? And is anything in our lives including how we eat, move, breathe & think NOT spiritual?

Sign Up For MSOPI Here: https://bit.ly/msopi-nomad KEY TAKEAWAYS Don't get emotionally involved If it doesn't work from a business standpoint and the numbers don't add up, however much you want it, you must learn to walk away. As soon as you can master your emotions you can move up to the next level. Effective time management This can be a challenge but as soon as you can get in control of your time, you can prevent other people from wasting it. Compartmentalising is key along with consistency and discipline in order to achieve effective time management. Always see builders work beforehand To build your power team you need a reputable builder, and this is about making sure you've seen their work. You need to make sure you've networked with the builder and developed a relationship in order to build that trust. Getting the wrong tenant in You could have people who don't pay rent or trash your property. Service accommodations could end up with the property being used for large parties. It is important that your contracts are effective, and that you've built good relationships with letting agents. Getting gazumped This is when someone else makes a higher offer for a property and ends up winning the deal. This can be extremely frustrating as you are so close to the deal. It is not a pleasant experience but it does happen.  Japanese Knotweed It's a common thing, especially in Hull, and it can affect the mortgage ability of a property. It requires specialist treatment but can be resolved. Ensure you have a process and plan in place to deal with this unexpected challenge.  Always have a contingency fund It is extremely important to have a contingency fund as you never know what could happen and you don't want to be in a position of constant panic mode. Build up this fund as part of your monthly operational costs and you will be in a better position to cope with any unexpected by inevitable costs. Having the right mindset You must approach everything with the right mindset. Positivity will bring you positivity but be aware that things will happen and it's all about how you respond to it. 11 ENTREPRENEUR TRUTHS I WISH I'D KNOWN In this episode, Rob shares the 11 things he wishes he had known when he was starting out. This podcast is an amazing opportunity to benefit from Rob's expertise and experience. The Disruptive Entrepreneur should be listened to now by anyone starting out in business, it will make a positive difference to your journey. KEY TAKEAWAYS 1 You're not alone You can feel that challenges are yours alone.  In reality, you are not alone other entrepreneurs have faced the same challenges. Align yourself with people who can help you, mentor you, inspire you and lift you up, People who have the answers to your problems because they've been there. 2 It's good to want to make a difference but it's also good to want to make a profit The purpose of business is to take risks and the reward is profit. The ideal for sustainable and scalable business is to achieve a balance between serving, solving, caring, making a difference whilst equally being selfishly motivated to make a net profit margin. 3 Time management is easier than you think In reality, everyone has the same amount of time in the day. Time management is about time prioritising. It's about managing both your emotions and your planning. Compartmentalising is the key to managing your time successfully. If you know what you've got to do and when then it removes the emotions. 4 Manage and master your emotions well This is what will drive your business to be successful.  Emotions can dominate the entrepreneur as things are not fair. Business mastery is taking events in your stride accepting them and not reacting to them emotionally so that you don't cause resistance or breakage. You have mastered your emotions when you can smile, be grateful and accept things even though that's not how you feel. 5 if you want to be great in business you need to be great at marketing The area you must be great at in any business is marketing. This is about promoting the products you have and getting them out there to the market. If you want to sell more, it's about creating a balance between putting out value and what you get back.  If you want to sell more increase the amount of value you are putting out. 6 You need to up your game with social media This is a key requirement for any business in 2019 It's not just the volume of posts it's also about the quality. For organic content, LinkedIn extends your reach to a much larger contact base than other platforms. You should be increasing both the quality and quantity of your content to increase your reach. 7 The balance of confidence and humility ‘If you don't believe in yourself why should anyone else?' The belief about a business can come from the enjoyment and the passion and from the proof, the success of the results. Confidence can turn into hubris, arrogance, narcissism and complacency these are human traits. It's not about never experiencing them but about understanding and managing them. 8 What you should be planning for next The time is now to plan, prepare, save, get liquid for, and organise finance. You need to do these things right now to be ready for the next recession. It's coming, the signs are there so you need to be prepared so that you don't miss any of the opportunities that will available. 9 How you feel comparing yourself to others It's a curse but it can force you to grow and learn. If you are going to compare yourself to anyone else then make sure to do the upside as well as the downside. It's a futile exercise for me to try and be like Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of my heroes, the best thing is to use him to inspire me to be the best version of myself that I can be. 10 Knowing what type of business you are   There are 3 main types of business person The intrapreneur - someone who wants to own things but doesn't want to take the risk these people often partner with an entrepreneur or work with autonomy within a large company. The lifestyle entrepreneur – who want to maximise their time. This is the most important thing to them, and they will sacrifice certain things to retain time and lifestyle. The empire builder – who wants vast scale, they want to grow something big and meaningful. 11 The myths of the hard sell Working hard is only part of the equation working smart is another part leveraging, outsourcing, getting low-value tasks done in a different way e.g. using apps, technology, virtual assistants can transform your business. BEST MOMENTS ‘It's about life and business prioritisation' ‘Get out of your own way' ‘A simple solution, you need to talk to other people' 'Don't do another thing that's not selling' 'Often the recipients of our worst emotions are those who are closet to us' 'No one is going to be pushing, selling or marketing your product for you' ‘Are you getting good discussions from your posts?' ‘You want to be humble to learn from everyone' 'Some of the biggest companies have been formed in recessions' 'You can never be a better version of them you can only be a better version of you' VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-disruptive-entrepreneur/id1076679649?mt=2 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Routine-Re sults-Rob-Moore/dp/1909846759 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is the host of the UK's no. 1 business podcast “The Disruptive Entrepreneur,” as well as an entrepreneur, property investor, property educator, and holder of 3 world records for public speaking. The first of January was dedicated by the Romans to their God of Gates and Doors - Janus. Janus had a distinctive and unusual look – he had two faces which rather cleverly meant he could look behind him with one face whilst simultaneously looking forward with his other face. Just as doors and gates look in two directions, this god could look both backward and forward at the same time. This made him not only the guardian of exits, entrances and transitions, but just as you go through a door or gate to enter a new place, Janus was seen as the God of Beginnings. We of course remember Janus in the name of our first month of the year, January, but he represented beginnings and firsts of all types. This makes Janus a perfect symbol for us at this and any time of the year. So although we’re doing the two-faced Janus thing of looking back (in last weeks Changeability Podcast - episode 22) and looking forward to new beginnings today at the beginning of January – it doesn’t matter whether you read or listen to this in January or any month or day of the year. It’s about new beginnings of any type at any time. Indeed Janus was originally honoured on the first day of every month and at other key times in the year and people’s lives such as harvest, birth and marriage. Whilst the passing of one year into another lays down a useful marker in time to think about our lives, we can take any time as a cut off point to sign off a portion of our lives and start a new segment afresh.  Compartmentalising our thinking into years, months, weeks or even days,  gives us a convenient time span to divide and measure ourselves by. The great thing is that any moment in our life can be a gateway to a new and different pathway – to new beginnings. In today’s episode of the Changeability Podcast we’re talking about the concept of looking forward.  And asking you what you’re looking forward to doing, achieving, experiencing and being this year. Are you approaching this year with excited anticipation and embracing it as something to literally look forward to. Because when we look forward to something – we expect it to happen – we’ve set an intention to do something and are now looking forward to it.  We’re looking at ways of doing this on today’s show. Specifically in this week’s episodes we look at: Your score for last year score out of 10 (and ours) A totally insignificant unscientific sample of what people are saying about the new year. What is a tabula rasa and what’s on yours (and why does Julian like showing off with Latin)? What are you looking forward and expecting to happen this year? What will you score for this year be? How to reverse engineer this year. What do you need to change or do differently to get to your new rating? Making happy and energised two important words this year. What are your themes for the year? The positivity challenge. A big warning about what happens if you don’t do this (hint – nothing). Are you meandering or living on purpose? Who’s setting your agenda? What are you literally looking forward to this year? 5 questions to kick-start your year In one year’s time how will your score this year out of 10? What do you need to do and change to reach that score? What are your big themes or goals for the coning year? What is your ‘why’ or purpose behind these (in other words - the reason you have these themes and goals) Are you looking forward to an amazing year? Here’s to a great year ahead.  We appreciate you being part of ours and hope we continue to be a part of yours.  For action Answer the 5 questions to kick-start your year Let us know your big themes and goals for the year in the comments below or in our private Changeability FB group – which you can join here
