This episode was recorded at an exclusive event called PodMAX where founders had an opportunity to share their stories and knowledge. Special guest host Todd Giannattasio leads the conversation down a path of insights, solutions, and collaboration. Join us for our next event at www.podmax.co Jaime O'Connor is a mad scientist and strategy nerd dedicated to helping brands understand their growth opportunities in the digital landscape. She's got a great history that started all the way in the fourth grade selling scrunchies all the way up to some other beauty brands more recently with Happy Hair Brush and Savor Beauty. Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation: Why she’s a natural-born entrepreneur How she got started and got to build different businesses The power of finding strategic partners Recognizing your customer acquisition journey Understanding your website conversion rate Ad budgets entrepreneurs should be thinking about Curt Maly’s BELT method Episode Highlights: Recognizing the Customer Acquisition Journey As a business owner should be thinking about your lifetime value for your customer. You have to take the time to calculate it. Look at who is your top sector of customers and what's their lifetime value? It's really important to be looking at what should your cost per acquisition be to be profitable in your business, not just your advertising. If you're advertising in the U.S., $50 and under can be really hard to break even. So if you're at that point, if your typical average order value is $50 or under, you need to have money on the back end. Do you have subscription services? Do you have additional things to sell those people like? How else are you going to make their money? You're probably going to generally breakeven on the front end, so that's where you want to have a higher lifetime value. Then you should have a 2% to 3% conversion rate on your website, which is the industry average for e-commerce. Understanding Website Conversion Rate If you are at 2% on your website conversion rate, then you're in the danger zone. Your ads are going to convert less than that. So your website, as a whole, needs to be converting at a higher level to know that you're going to do all on that side. And that's all work that you can do and work on right before you start dumping money into ads. Because all ads are going to do is accelerate the fact that it doesn't work. Ad Budgets Entrepreneurs Should Be Thinking About You could do $3,000 a month in AdSense and you can get a really good return on it. This allows you to have campaigns focused on purchase and campaigns focused on nurture. Curt Maly’s BELT Method Belief - the introduction Engaged - the nurture sequence Lead - this works well when you're a higher ticket consulting services Transact - ex. making a phone call or buying the product Resources Mentioned: Happy Hair Brush Savor Beauty Inspired Focus Digital --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/erikecabral/support
We are hanging out with Rand Fishkin today, who previously co-founded the SEO company MOZ, and has most recently started a new venture with SparkToro. This tool is quickly becoming one of our favorite pieces of software to do a lot of research. It helps us figure out what content to create around specific topics, what topics resonate around audiences, and you can literally plug in your URL or social media channel and it will kick out all this research from a variety of platforms. If you are running ads, you are probably noticing lately higher costs, fewer options, and lower conversions. We break a lot of that down from Rand’s perspective and you’ll see why it’s important to diversify from Facebook and Google if you are solely relying on those platforms. You’ll also hear us talk about what’s in store for the future with the way Google presents search results, and what you should be doing to rely less on links while building up your brand. After you listen, get some more advertising tips with Curt Maly and Tom Breeze. “The primary goal is to get people to your website and your email list because that’s the one channel you always get to own and control.” - Rand Fishkin Some Topics We Discussed Include: Perspectives on the zero clicks search problem Checking out the Crack Shack (it’s not what you think!) Salome Schillack from ShineAndSucceed.com joins us today and today we are chatting all about using Facebook ads to not only grow an audience but to grow podcasts. We like her approach because it doesn’t take a huge budget to make it happen, and she gives some great targets and metrics to look out for with your campaign. Salome also talks about the concept of getting engagement and why you don’t need to run ads with a call to action every single time. Even with your existing audience, you probably don’t need to be running ads to constantly telling them to do something and screaming for their attention. We also talk about the top of funnel and we’ve never used ads in the flow that she talks about, but she broke down some cool things that we plan on testing. She also talks about the distinction between landing view pages and clicks. That’s why we love her approach which is to just give them something to love and/or laugh at. We also talk about front-loading your ad accounts in Facebook’s eye which ultimately leads to a better algorithm and lower ad costs in the end. When you are done, be sure to check out our chats with Ryan Levesque where he goes into depth about using quiz funnels for your Facebook ads and as well as our show with Curt Maly for more strategies on how to grow your brand without breaking the bank. “The first clue as to what is good engagement content is to look at what has done well on your social feeds, look at what people have already connected with, what’s gotten people to comment, share and what is already triggering an emotion for people.” - Salome Schillack Some Topics We Discussed Include: Who knew that Joey from Friends had a social media strategy? Facebook ad account secrets? Shhhhh What to do if you have no audience yet and want to run your first Facebook ad How to revive an older Facebook or Instagram account whose engagement has dropped How to use quizzes in your funnels Growing your podcast audience with Facebook ads The sweet spot for ad costs Examples of ad content to use for multiple purposes Facebook quizzes that are tanking? We are back today with another awesome Therapy Session which we recorded literally right at the airport and before grabbing a flight back from Florida where we attended Rich Schefren’s “Coalition To Save Internet Business” live stream event where it was a who’s who in internet marketing. We got to share the cigar bar stage with such guests as Russell Brunson, Dean Graziosi, Jeff Walker, Dennis Yu, Perry Marshall, and Mike Fillisame among many others. We first attended a great mastermind, then shortly after that, Rich held his 24-hour live stream, where there were literally billions of dollars of net worth under one roof (plus thousands of dollars of alcohol and cigars). Listen in as we discussed some cool tactics we learned as well as insights into what makes some of the internet’s most successful entrepreneurs tick. We also talk about imposter syndrome, the importance of authenticity, and some of the many things that make Agora so prosperous. When you’re done listening, be sure to revisit the show we did with Rich Schefren as well as the show we had with Curt Maly where we talk more in-depth about best practices for moving your business forward as well as some additional Facebook ad strategies. “Most of them are some of the friendliest, giving people and they are willing to share their tactics...that is why they succeed because they are so freely giving and if you ask them a question they are an open book.” - Matt Wolfe “So as we talked to a lot of people around this event, you came to realize that the imposter syndrome is a real thing no matter what level you are at.“ - Joe Fier Some Topics We Discussed Include: The secrets of being rich…..podcast! Twelve years ago, Ralph Burns was working an admittedly slimy corporate job. He had a great salary, but he was absolutely miserable. As a side gig, he started blogging about sales management to see if he make a better career happen. When a scandal broke at work, Ralph got pinned as the fall guy. He was out of a job and had to make his side gig bring in some real money. He decided to try advertising a client on Facebook. An hour later, traffic was pouring in and he knew he’d found the career he was looking for. Now Ralph is the CEO of Tier 11, an agency that specializes in Facebook and Instagram advertising. He manages a portfolio with an annual spend in excess of $50 million. Oh, he also happens to be the co-host of the wildly successful Perpetual Traffic Podcast too. Wondering how to adapt to all the Facebook changes? Upset your Facebook ads aren't getting the ROI you expect? Wondering if Facebook is a dying platform for lead generation? Facebook is evolving with the demands of it's users and we know Facebook isn't going away anytime soon. Learn from an expert on the best way to position your Facebook ads as well as utilizing Facebook live and videos to build relationships. In this episode, we'll cover: Is Facebook a dying platform for lead gen? How to use Facebook ads to generate leads. 3 strategies for using video on Facebook. Today I chatted with Curt Maly, CBDO at Black Box Social Media, speaker and primary voice of Social Media Ad Genius. With over 8 years experience working with Facebook Ads, Curt shares some insight on the current Facebook landscape and how your agency can adapt. With the focus being on building relationships, Curt shares some tips on Facebook Live and videos that will help your agency achieve a like, know and trust factor that is so important for building a sales pipeline. Is Facebook a Dying Platform for Lead Gen? The current news media surrounding Europe's GDPR has definitely scared some from using Facebook, but this won't necessarily last. Curt says Facebook ads definitely aren't for every industry. You and/or your clients might perform better on another platform. For example, Instagram is showing success as it emerges as a more popular platform. However since it's photo-centric you need to make sure you're smart about relevant content to build your agency brand on Instagram. If we look at the history of Facebook it can help see where the future is going. It's similar to the early years of Google Adwords, when they weren't focusing on customer service. Facebook has struggled with privacy issues as well as customer service. (Like, how hard is it to get a Facebook contact on the phone?!) But Facebook is stepping up their game by working with agencies and focusing on customer support. So, they're coming around... and Facebook is far from "dying" :) How To Use Facebook Ads to Generate Leads Your agency needs to build a human relationship and that's going to cost more in ad dollars. It is time to focus on content vs. relevance. Facebook is currently the largest publishing platform. And, if your agency want to use the largest publishing platform to generate leads, then you need to publish really good content and follow-up accordingly! A current Facebook analysis says that clicks and/or click-thru rates don't necessarily mean someone is going to increase brand awareness or intent to purchase. This goes against the common ideology, so the industry needs an ideology change. We need to adapt to change, social media platforms are still a bit of the wild wild west. Facebook is ever changing their algorithms. Right now Facebook is looking at the engagement on business profile pages and their posts. Facebook is dinging business for "click bait" if people are clicking your link to a landing page and then come right back to Facebook. This is why using Facebook for organic reach with direct response won't work if your agency isn't playing in the game of Facebook. A successful business plan includes engaging posts and relationship building, not just running ads. You won't have scalable traffic or a predictable pipeline if you're just focusing on ROI and not the personal relationships. 3 Strategies for Your Agency's Videos on Facebook Video allows a viewer to relate to you, get to know you and build a rapport with you. This is a much better business building strategy than a "good hook" in your ad copy. When looking to create a video, Curt says he likes to think of structure of infomercials. That's right, infomercials. Infomercials last the test of time and follow a basic formula: every 3-5 minutes, there is a call-to-action. Many of us only give a CTA at the end of the video. But for those who don't want all the way through, they miss out on the their next steps. There are three types of videos your agency can use: Short one minute video. Use this video to address a cold audience. Generally, this video is to build awareness. Provide 2-3 bullet points and then a call-to-action. Hint: Instagram can support a 1-minute video too, so why not multipurpose? Facebook Live. Use this type of video to help people get to know you and your agency brand. Facebook Live videos can help grow engagement to score points with Facebook. As much as 80-90% of views are from Facebook live replays. Apply infomercial structure and split your video into 4 equal parts with a CTA after each part. In the first 30 seconds give them: what you're going to cover or why they should watch and a CTA or where to find out more info. Long, 10-15 minute videos. Use these videos to provide great value to the existing followers. as well as to announce or promote something new. Apply infomercial structure and split your video into 4 equal parts with a CTA after each part. You can have more than one CTA and take them multiple places, such as a landing page, an early bird list, or even point them to "like" and "follow" you on Facebook. This week we go over an awesome, detailed talk about getting the most out of advertising on Facebook. Curt Maly gave us a ton of practical, actionable information in just one hour. So we wanted to make sure you got those strategies. These tactics include harnessing organic content properly. Make sure you post quality posts on your Facebook page on a regular basis, then test out which type of content resonates with your target audiences by promoting it through Facebook's ad system. Don't worry about your clickthrough rates. Clickers are like window shoppers; 90% of your purchases come from people who never click on your ads, but see your content. Once you've used Facebook's tracking tools to generate lists of audiences with various levels of engagement with your brand, Curt says to host Facebook Live events at least once every two weeks. Every few minutes, make a call-to-action; for example, asking people to say where they're watching from in the comments below, or to comment with questions they have. That interaction reduces your ad costs, because Facebook detects that you're putting out stuff that other people finds valuable. It also adds new people to your engaged audience lists for further targeted ads. Curt also urges us to use Facebook Messenger bots now, to automate communication with interested leads and get them to see more ad copy. Curt gave us so much great tips in this talk. If you want to scale up your business and are looking for advertising advice, you can't miss this incredible hour-long speech. Get into Facebook Ads the right way, before your competitors do. Key takeaways: Focus on generating relevant organic content, then testing its relevance by promoting it 90% of your purchasers don't click on your ads, so don't focus on clicks Host Facebook Lives for your audience with quality content and regular calls-to-action Take a look at using Messenger bots

In today's episode of The Art of Paid Traffic, we're continuing our discussion of Facebook ads compliance and policy and taking a behind-the-scenes look at successful Facebook ads. I've invited on Curt Maly, who's a fellow Facebook ads guy. He has a digital marketing agency and he also runs a website called Social Media Ad Genius where they run a lot of Facebook ads - about $5 million dollars worth of ads over the last few years. They work with businesses in all different kinds of niches, which you'll hear more about in today's episode. Curt's a great evangelist for doing Facebook ads the right way and recently visited with their ads compliance team. The visit is really timely because you may have heard about a lot of Facebook ad accounts getting shut down lately. And, if you do find yourself with this issue, Facebook tends to be vague at best as to explaining why.
Today in episode 18 of The Art of Paid Traffic, I welcome back Justin Brooke as we shift gears from content marketing, which we talked about in Episode 17, to talk about another really timely topic which is Facebook ads compliance and guidelines. In case you haven’t yet heard the last episode with him, Justin has been in the paid traffic space for over 8 years now and he runs a digital advertising agency called IM Scalable. He’s a really well known guy in the space, super smart with this stuff - especially FB ads compliance. All of a sudden over the past few months more and more people are getting their Facebook ads accounts shut down. It’s really become alarming. Even people I know who are legitimately trying to do the right thing are being caught in this. This is such an important topic right now, I’m devoting this episode with Justin and the next episode with another Facebook ads expert that I have a lot of respect for, Curt Maly.
