Writer, director, cartoonist, and voice artist Dan Povenmire talks about his adventures in Hollywood creating the enormously successful Phineas and Ferb for Disney.
It's been a long time. I know. Sorry about that. Life happens. Anyway, we recorded this back in October of 2021 and then "stuff" happened and we didn't get around to editing or posting it. So "today" Derek and I talk to Animation Director and creator, Dan Povenmire, of Phineas and Ferb fame. Dan gets to talking about his TikTok channel, YouTube shorts, how he and Swampy and their animation team (WHICH DEREK USED TO BE ON!!!) would come up with the stories, plots, songs, etc. How the pandemic affected work, life, etc. And more etc. etc. as we just kinda talk about random stuff. But that is what Random Fandom is all about anyway, right?

Dan & Swampy redefined animation for Gen Z via Phineas and Ferb & Milo Murphy’s positivity & ingenuity! With Candace Against the Universe & Disney+ on the way, we’ll talk crossover secrets, timelines, and animation industry changes! Every fan of Phineas and Ferb, Milo Murphy’s Law, Pete the Cat, and animation in general will see something special in this one! We’ll even get into some talk about earlier projects Dan and Swampy worked on, such as The Simpsons and Family Guy! There’s a bit of backstory to why this interview was so important! We can’t even being to tell you how infinitely MeGa-Special this interview is to us! This is the 10 Year Anniversary of our very first interview with Dan Povenmire and Swampy Marsh. Back in February, 2009, 8 year-old Piper Reese, on her 2nd day in LA, made her first trip to the Walt Disney Animations studios to do an interview at Phineas and Ferb’s headquarters in the Frank G. Wells building on the Disney Studios lot. After a smile from Courtney Thorne Smith on the way into the building, Piper was greeted by every single member of the Phineas and Ferb team. She was treated like a visiting princess (everyone there knew her name when she arrived). Dan and Swampy took the time to answer every question, show her all around their studio, and introduce her to every person she walked by. Dan explained the animation process and showed her his earliest sketches for Phineas and Ferb. Swampy showed his his shark-chomped Phineas & Ferb surfboard. They even gave her a tour around the Disney Studios Lot and through the special underground passageway where Walt had animators carry their hand-drawn cells to keep them safe from the elements. In our 12+ year history, it’s still at the top of our list of special days. Every time we’ve seen Dan or Swampy, they’ve taken the time to do an interview or ask how she’s doing. In an Industry that can be rough (to say the least), Dan and Swampy have been two shining examples of great people who love what they do and have constantly reminded us of the good side of the entertainment Industry. At an early age, Piper got a great sense for how the animation side of the Industry can often be a very special and different end of the business. We’ve seen that repeat through the years with others in the animation field, whether we’ve been at Disney Animation, Nickelodeon, or Dreamworks. There’s something different that isn’t always as easy to recognize in the live-action side. So, flash forward to 10 years later. It’s been years since we’ve had a chance to interview Dan and Swampy together (the last one was probably on the red carpet at the Phineas and Ferb Across the 2nd Dimension premiere). With ten years having passed since the first one and the success that Phineas and Ferb went on to, we really wanted to do a new interview and give a little extra focus on Dan and Swampy themselves in addition to getting into details about Phineas and Ferb and Milo Murphy’s Law and Surfer Jack Productions, Swampy’s own production company that is producing an animated version of the Pete the Cat book series on Amazon. For this one, we did an intro on the spot at the studio instead of a separate recording. We’ve got some graphic and sound thrown in, but this interview is about the shows, answering some fangirl/fanboy questions, learning about animation, and sharing the visit with you guys! ❤️

As we often say on the show, if you haven't had a strange, paranormal experience, it's likely someone you know has. This happens to be the case with two college friends of Forrest, Dan Povenmire and Susan Lambert. In the mid-1980s, Susan was working as a reporter for the student newspaper of The University of Southern California, The Daily Trojan. She had asked Dan if he wanted to accompany her to an interview with a movie director. They set out on a drive that should only have taken no more than 40 minutes to complete. But upon arriving at the hotel where the director was giving interviews, learned that they were somehow almost two hours late. This seeming impossibility has baffled Dan ever since and fueled a search for answers. But to add to the mystery, this wouldn't be the only unexplainable experience of missing time, as the pair would encounter another episode during a subsequent car ride together. And like with the first trip, each would remember a few odd sights during it that the other didn't recall. While unexplainable disruptions in time are rare, many people have reported experiencing a disturbing wrinkle in the fabric of time which we trust should always be smooth. Just what is going on when something so seemingly fixed and unalterable as the passage of time fluctuates? In the latter portion of the show, writer, field researcher, and podcaster Micah Hanks joins us for a discussion on some possible theories as to what might be happening scientifically with the phenomenon of Missing Time. DAN POVENMIRE and SWAMPY MARSH INTERVIEW PHINEAS AND FERB Premiere (plus DJANGO MARSH) w PIPER!!HOLY PiPeRoNi!!!! When PIPER REESE first interviewed DAN and SWAMPY at the beginning of 2009, they had JUST moved over to Disney and had just received the very first stuffed PERRY prototype! It's AMAZING to see how much the show has grown! WE ARE SOOOOOO excited for the CAST and CREW of PHINEAS and FERB and couldn't be happier for DAN and SWAMPY! They are two of the nicest and most genuine people we've met in the entertainment industry! You guys always ask what our favorite show is...well, PHINEAS and FERB has been a favorite since we started our show (just a few months after PHINEAS and FERB premiered!) We think it's the best and most PiPeRiFiC animated show on TV. Make SURE you've seen the Piper's Picks TV sit down episodes with Dan and Swampy (Dr. Doofenschmirtz and Major Monogram), Vincent Martella (Phineas), Tyler Alexander Mann (Karl) and our Piper's QUICK Picks with Mitchell Musso (Jeremy), Alyson Stoner (Isabella) and the upcoming episodes (some UNRELEASED classics) with Bobby Gaylor (Buford), Dee Bradley Baker (Perry), Ashley Tisdale (Candace), and Maulik Pancholy (Baljeet)!!! Stay TOONED! The Planet's only tween entertainment reporter has more episodes from the PHINEAS AND FERB: ACROSS THE SECOND DIMENSION Premier on the way!
