The quality of our life depends on how much we can focus and what we concentrate on.Our focus depends on:If it is exciting and challenging? If it is overwhelming? If it is boring? And of our attitude. Milton said: the mind can make out of the hell a paradise and out of the paradise a hell. How can we improve our focus? We focus only on one thing and if the mind is wandering, bring the mind back to that subject…If our capacity is below the challenge then that leads to anxiety, uneasiness, strain, tension…If our capacity is much higher than the challenge it leads to boring…If the problem solving is in balance, we get in the flow…If we have a challenge, we need to learn the skills to solve that problem. After some time, we can do so and it becomes boring. Then we have to upgrade our skills to keep our focus. We have to increase the challenge to meet our abilities. If the challenge is beyond our abilities, it puts us under pressure. Then we have to chunk it down so it meets our ability. Our focus depends also on our Self-interest.If we are eager and passionate to solve our problems, we set ourselves under tension and so we are losing our focus. So more we are selfish to acquire our goals so more tension we build up that prevent to gain our goal. If I think I need that for myself, I am always under tension.Selfishness leads to a scattered mind.It leads to a narrow focus on myself/self-interest.We become more vulnerable, and so we are open to anxiety and frustration. An unselfish mind is a relaxed mind!So more we are doing good for the organization so more we gain focus. It is not so much what I get out of it, it is more what I can do for others. The Gita is telling us, that Identification is sorrow. If we surrender our deeds to the Lord or do it even as worship… We gain bliss through our actions. What is spirituality? Spirituality is when I close my eyes, I find peace inside of me.When I open my eyes, my attitude is what can I do for you…What can I do for the world or for the Lord?Worldliness is the opposite… What can I get out of that? The focus on selfishness leads to unpleasantness, tension, and frustration.Unselfishness is to be relaxed and be focused.Love leads to focus. What I love, my mind can easily focus and that leads to a focused mind. For instance, a mother loves her child, and all her actions will be relaxed. My Video: How to focus your mind? FBC Durant, Gerald Tidwell, November 6, 1983. Morning Service.
Unselfishness sounds like the goal, right? It seems like what we should always be striving for. While agree that it is important to give of ourselves and make sacrifices for the good of others, there is a healthy way and an unhealthy way to do this. Today we're talking about how to give a good gift and about the importance of balancing unselfishness with taking care of ourselves.
In “The Unselfishness of Love,” Pastor Dave Gustavsen teaches about what love is – and isn't. In order to grow in agape love, we must first recognize that we fall short. We need to look away from ourselves, to Jesus instead, who is the model of unselfish love. As we focus on Jesus and trust him, He will help our hearts will become more like his, and we'll find ourselves freed up to love people really well. Being selfish doesn't help if you are trying to be a help to someone. Be more considerate to be more unselfish. SB Favor's inspirational quote is a reminder how being selfish can be a hindrance to see the needs of someone else. An audio clip of Comedian Rickey Smiley was played during the episode to give an example of someone that is totally unselfish during his time of grief. Rickey's son passed away and he has decided to be a blessing to others and not focus on himself. The episode is very inspiring.
Matt D., Executive Director All Addicts Anonymous (AAA) discusses the original AA pioneer program focusing on the Four Absolutes of Honesty, Purity, Unselfishness, and Love. In this episode Matt and Father Bill explore the deeper meaning of UNSELFISHNESS. It appears we have two selves, two centers of consciousness – one at the level of BODY and another at the level of SOUL. Freeing ourselves from bondage to the one brings us to the freedom of the other. The episode builds on an article from the AAA archives titled Egotism: The Disease Within the Disease. It's a powerful read available in the Show Notes. Show Notes: Article: Egotism - The Disease within the Diseases All Addicts Anonymous website with meeting information. Matt D., Executive Director All Addicts Anonymous (AAA) discusses the original AA program focusing on the Four Absolutes of Honesty, Purity, Unselfishness, and Love. In this episode Matt and Father Bill explore the deeper meanings of PURITY. Of the Four Absolutes, it's probably the least understood and the most feared and often discounted. It's also the one that may prove the dangers of “half-measures.” The episode builds on an article from the AAA archives titled Frank Buchman's Cure. It's a short read available in the Show Notes. Show Notes: · Link to Frank Buchman's Cure article · Link to a Wikipedia article on Frank Buchman · Twice Born Men by Harold Begbie pdf version · More Twice Born Men by Harold Begbie pdf version · Link to Professor Bernard McGinn's article on Sexuality and Mysticism Reference to Wilson putting the Four Absolutes in Steps Six and Seven: The Four Absolutes first appear in the work of Robert E. Speer, a Presbyterian missionary and scholar who studied the life and teachings of Jesus. Speer concluded that Jesus' own life reflected a set of absolute moral standards that could effectively serve to guide us in determining the course and content of our thoughts, decisions, and actions. Speer grouped these moral guidelines under the headings of Honesty, Purity, Unselfishness and Love and they later formed the foundation of the Oxford Group program. When Bill Wilson was asked where the Absolutes could be found in his 12-Step formula, he replied, “I put them in Steps Six and Seven.” (Ernest Kurtz, Not-God: A History of Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 242-43.) “Wellness is setting the bar of living where you not only don't have an illness but you're moving in the direction of better health.” — Sherri Danzig Sherri Danzig, a self-care mentor and owner of Choosing Vibrancy, shares with us exactly why choosing vibrancy is so important. No matter who we are, we can make changes, especially in how we look at something.
