The list of things that are hard to do when you’re grieving is long - eating, sleeping, focusing, surface-level chit-chat, remembering where you left your phone, planning for the future, or forgiving yourself for the past. Throw work or school into that mix and it gets really tough to feel like you can show up and function at the same level you're used to. When Alica Forneret went back to work after her mother's sudden death, she found the opposite of what she needed in terms of support. That experience inspired her to explore ways companies and organizations can better support their grieving employees as well as small things each of us can do to attend to our grief in the workplace. Alica Forneret writes for a number of publications and websites, including, SAD Magazine, Modern Loss, and Vancouver Magazine. She also created the Dead Moms Club lapel pins as a way to express grief more publicly and connect with others who are grieving their mothers. Check out Alica's website with articles, resources, and even recipes for supporting yourself and others who are grieving in the workplace and beyond.

Alica Forneret's mom was sick for most of her life. But her dad always reassured her that if things got bad enough, he would tell Alica when she and her sister needed to come home. That day came in October of 2016 when Alica's mom died in the ICU. This week, we're talking about how love sometimes looks like control and planning, the power of having people with similar losses around, how you can use your gifts to help someone who's grieving, and where Alica got the idea for her popular Dead Moms Club lapel pins. Also this week, I'm exploring the icky occurrence of using grief to hold other people hostage. My guest in this episode of Shared Secrets, Kate Spencer, has experienced that full range of emotions firsthand each holiday season since her mother died of cancer several years ago. In the episode, Kate discusses her new memoir, The Dead Moms Club, which details her experience of losing her mother when she was 27. We also discuss the stigma surrounding grief and loss, and how preconceived ideas of how grief should look can be harmful. She also shares her tips for those looking for comfort and consolation this holiday season.

Kate Spencer knows everyone cool, and everyone cool knows Kate Spencer. This is what I've come to realize after getting to know this woman. The writer and Upright Citizens Brigade alum is the kind of person who is both wildly clever and fiercely self-deprecating. The two of us recently teamed up on a bus full of women activists helmed by Jane Fonda (YES, THE JANE FONDA) to electrify voters who normally sit out of mid-term elections. Kate held the map and kept the ledger. I knocked on the doors and did most of the chatting. We stayed in our respective lanes and were a good team! After reading her book, I have a whole new respect for Kate. She's been on the front lines of grief after the death of her mom. She lays it all out in The Dead Moms Club. The book holds your hand yet respects your process. It gave me a fresh perspective on something about which I have little experience. Pre-order it today!
