In part one, Craig and Rex recall some memorable Fourth of July baseball fireworks featuring the ubiquitous Guy Hecker, the irrepressible Boom Boom Beck and the simply legendary Rick Camp. In part two, they discuss the three Expansion Era (1961-2024) pitchers who made an All-Star team then went on to lose 20 games in the season. Also, Bobby Bonilla Day and what may have brought an end to  teenagers playing in the Major Leagues. The three pitchers, by the way, are Turk Farrell, 1962 Colt-.45s; Mel Stottlemyre, 1966 New York Yankees; and Steve Rogers, 1974 Montreal Expos. This is notable only because in the Rick Camp Game, the New York Met pitching coach who made a 3:20 a.m. visit to the mound prior to Rick Camp coming to the plate was none other than Mel Stottlemyre. Here is the Rick Camp Game video on YouTube.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcZIs1tIGlgErrata: Boom Boom Beck was 12-20 in 1933, not 1934. Nate Andrews was 14-20 with a 2.57 ERA in 1943, not 1942. The Yankees first African American player was Elston Howard in 1955 -- only the Phillies (1957), Tigers (1958) and Red Sox (1959) among pre-expansion teams took longer to sign African American players. The Texas Rangers drafted David Clyde in 1973, not 1974 or 75.Episodes Mentioned:195 - Looking Back at Houston's 1963 All-Rookie Lineup 183 - Len Koenecke's Sad and Tragic Trip Home w/ Bill Lamb (32:10, Delahanty) 149 - You Gotta Be Smart to Play This Game w/ Bill Bonham 127 - The Old Ballparks Project, Part I (42:00, neighborhood bars)75 - If It's Something That Happens, It's Going to Be a Sad Day In Baltimore (27:00, Guy Hecker's record day) -->Join our Discord: https://discord.gg/tT8d3pVUsN-->You can support Hooks & Runs by purchasing books, including the books featured in this episode, through our store at Bookshop.org. We also delve into Seattle's long history of identity as a sort of a nice, passive city tucked away in the upper corner of the country that was always in the shadow of Los Angeles. H., Keyes, L. R., Borio, M. R., Chen, H. S., Patel, R. R., Gross, A. L., Delahanty, J., Cazares, C., Maree, L., Wichmann, R., Pereira, T. D., Benna, M. K., Root, C. M., Tye, K. M. Abstract: In order to respond appropriately to threats in the environment, the brain must rapidly determine whether a stimulus is important and whether it is positive or negative, and then use that information to direct behavioral responses. Neurons in the amygdala have long been implicated in valence encoding and in fear responses to threatening stimuli, but show transient firing responses in response to these stimuli that do not match the timescales of associated behavioral responses. For decades, there has been a logical gap in how behavioral responses could be mediated without an ensemble representation of the internal state of valence that has rapid onset, high signal-to-noise, and is sustained for the duration of the behavioral state. Here, we present the amygdalostriatal transition zone (ASt) as a missing piece of this highly conserved process that is of paramount importance for survival, which does exactly this: represents an internal state (e.g. fear) that can be expressed in multiple motor outputs (e.g. freezing or escape). The ASt is anatomically positioned as a 'shortcut' to connect the corticolimbic system (important for evaluation) with the basal ganglia (important for action selection) with the inputs of the amygdala and the outputs of the striatum - ideally poised for evaluating and responding to environmental threats. From in vivo cellular resolution recordings that include both electrophysiology and calcium imaging, we find that ASt neurons are unique in that they are sparse coding, extremely high signal-to-noise, and also maintain a sustained response for negative valence stimuli for the duration of the defensive behavior - a rare but essential combination. We further show that photostimulation of the ASt is sufficient to drive freezing and avoidance behaviors. Using single-nucleus RNA sequencing and in situ RNA labelling we generate a comprehensive profile of cell types and gene expression in the ASt, and find the ASt is genetically distinct from adjacent striatal and amygdalar structures. We also find that the ASt has a greater proportion of neurons expressing Drd2 than neurons expressing Drd1a, a unique feature compared to other regions of the striatum. Using in vivo calcium imaging, we show that that this Drd2+ population robustly encodes stimuli of negative valence, and in loss-of-function experiments find that optogenetic inhibition of Drd2+ ASt neurons causes a striking reduction in cue-conditioned fear responses. Together, our findings identify the ASt as a previously-unappreciated critical missing link for encoding learned associations and directing ongoing behavior. Copy rights belong to original authors. 095 | Evan Delahanty Shares How to Make Your Own YES in Business Evan Delahanty is the Founder and CEO of Peaceful Fruits, a social good snack startup that employs people with disabilities to make healthy, delicious, rainforest-friendly fruit snacks. Peaceful Fruits has been featured on NPR and ABC’s Shark Tank and is focused on scaling sales and production after a successful pilot. Prior to launching, Evan graduated from Walsh Jesuit High School (2003), Cornell University (2007), and then worked in operations management before serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Amazon interior of Suriname, South America. When Evan came back to the United States after serving in the Amazon with the Peace Corps, he knew that he wanted to find a way to bring back a small piece of his experience to his friends and family - or really, anyone who would have it. That’s when Peaceful Fruits was born. Ethically sourced, 100% fruit snacks, NO processed crap - it was a shoo-in! Everyone wants that, right? The funny part was, Evan was met with a lot of NOs - but not from his target audience! They loved it. Evan spent a lot of time working on the Peaceful Fruits brand. He had a story to tell, and couldn’t wait to share it. However, manufacturing was another situation - NO one would co-pack his product. In fact, Evan called at least 180 manufacturers, digging deep on Google, hoping to find someone who would believe in Peaceful Fruits as much as he did, and take a chance on a small fruit snack brand. Then, Evan made his own YES. Tune into this episode to hear how he did it! My guest on this week’s Success Unfiltered, Evan, had to learn that sometimes you’ll hear a lot of NOs before you finally find a way to make your own YES! If you’re feeling discouraged by how many NOs you’ve heard, then this is a MUST LISTEN episode of Success Unfiltered! Enjoy, and thank you for listening and tuning into Success Unfiltered! I’ve got 3 ways that you can turn a NO into a win (and maybe even a future YES)! Grab my guide to surviving rejections in business and making them work for you right HERE! Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Evan. Evan is this month’s Shark Tank guest. Evan shares a little about who he is and what he’s created. The biggest NO that Evan experienced happened on the manufacturing front. He shares the full story in this episode. Evan called 180 people to pitch manufacturing his fruit snacks When no one would work with him, Evan went and made his own fruit snacks in a local restaurant’s kitchen at 2 a.m., when they weren’t using it. When Peaceful Fruits began to grow, Evan said YES to hiring the best team ever! Peaceful Fruits employs people with particular disabilities, like Down’s Syndrome and Autism. Evan employed developmentally disabled people, creating fair wage jobs for his team. “You see that early adoption, you see those people starting to get excited about it. That tells you, you've got to keep swinging to try to find a way to make more.” ~ Evan Delahanty After appearing on Shark Tank, Peaceful Fruits was contacted by Sendik’s Grocery chain and it took almost a year before he met with them. The first month in Sendik’s didn’t go quite how Evan had hoped. He shares exactly what happened in this episode. “You must control yourself and not act on your first thought.” ~ Evan Delahanty Evan appeared at many of his own demonstrations, due to the size of the company, and found that he had to say YES to his ideal client and “toughen up” when people who were not his target audience said NO to his product. Evan knew that he had people interested in buying his products but if they can’t see the product on the shelves, no one is going to buy. Evan shares how he remedied that. Follow up with stores carrying Peaceful Fruits was key - as Evan followed up and made sure signs and point of sale systems were set up, sales increased and more people learned about his brand. Getting into Whole Foods would be a dream for Evan, but he knows his company wasn’t quite ready when they had their first opportunity. Evan has learned that by waiting he and his company would be in a better position the next time around. Evan shared what he would tell his younger self. After the challenge of serving in a village deep in the rainforest of Suriname, Evan was up for another: becoming an entrepreneur and creating a company that would provide sustainable income to Amazon communities via delicious, healthy fruit snacks. In perfect Peace Corps fashion, Evan started Peaceful Fruits with a batch of fruit snacks made in his mother's oven, packaged in ziplock bags, that he sold at his local farmer's market. Evan Delahanty is not a foodie. Yes, the man who founded Peaceful Fruits, a company that makes honest, whole fruit snacks ... was not all that into food at first. So how did he end up at the helm of a company that's changing the fruit snack game? It's all about connecting people and markets to the Amazon. Evan spent 27 months as a community economic development specialist in Pikin Slee, a remote village of Suriname accessible only by canoe. Giving back to this amazing place has become Evan's life's work.  Takeaways How do you know which ideas you should commit to, and which you should leave for someone else? Evan share his framework for evaluating these. We’ve heard a few times on this show that emerging brands should run with as lean a team as possible. This makes every hiring decision critical. Evan shares one question that will tell you whether or not an applicant has what it takes to join your squad. Kickstarter is actually a great way to help launch a CPG brand. But what are best practices? Evan shares his experience and top tips. Links Peaceful Fruits Connect with Evan on LinkedIn Have an idea for the show? Drop us a line! Brandbuilder@snacknation.com. In the early 1900s, Ed Delahanty was the biggest star in baseball. Regarded, by some, as baseball’s first 5-tool player, he hit over .400 three times, and was the game’s most powerful hitter. But he was struggling financially and, essentially, had to pay his team to continue playing. Big Ed was caught up in a battle between the well-established National League and the upstart American League. He was so distraught over his situation that he left his team in the middle of a road trip and was never to be seen again. John Saccoman, a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) joins me on Sports’ Forgotten Heroes for a conversation about Ed Delahanty – his hall of fame career, and the tragedy that followed.
