Discover fascinating facts about bighorn sheep, their habitats, and the Grand Slam of Sheep Hunting, plus top states for record-breaking bighorns. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Season 5, Episode 231 What's a Group of Bighorn Sheep Called? Bighorn sheep, one of North America's most iconic animals, live in social groups that are referred to as a herd instead of a flock. These majestic creatures are known for their impressive curled horns and can be found in rugged terrains across the western United States and Canada. Their social structures and unique behaviors make them fascinating creatures to observe. Which State Has the Largest Bighorn Sheep? Montana, Idaho, or Colorado? When it comes to size and record-breaking Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, Montana stands out. Over the last few years, three of the top five Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep recorded by the Boone and Crockett Club came from a small area in northwestern Montana, specifically Wild Horse Island. This remarkable location, just off the western shore of Flathead Lake, has produced some of the largest bighorns in history. Why Montana is a Hotspot for Bighorn Sheep Wild Horse Island, situated in Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, is a prime habitat for bighorn sheep. It's on this island that some of the most impressive Rocky Mountain bighorns have been found. The area's rugged terrain and abundant resources make it an ideal location for these incredible animals to thrive. Bighorn Sheep: True or False? Males and Females Live Together in Herds False: Males and females do not typically live together in the same herd. Bighorn sheep have distinct social structures. Rams (males) typically form bachelor groups, while ewes (females) live in herds with other females and their young. Female-led herds are organized and have specific roles: some act as guardians or leaders, while others may serve as babysitters for the young. Male-only herds, on the other hand, can consist of 5 to 50 rams at any given time, while female herds are larger, typically ranging from 5 to 100 members. The Grand Slam in Sheep Hunting: What Are the 4 Species? For hunters seeking the ultimate challenge, the Grand Slam of Sheep Hunting is a prestigious achievement. It includes four distinct species of North American sheep: Dall Sheep: Found in Alaska, Yukon, and Northwest Territories. Stone Sheep: Found in British Columbia and the Yukon. Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep: Found in the western U.S., including the Rocky Mountains. Desert Bighorn Sheep: Found in the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. The Grand Slam Club Founded in 1956, the Grand Slam Club/Ovis recognizes hunters who successfully bag all four species. To date, fewer than 1,400 people worldwide have accomplished this feat. Achieving the North American Sheep Grand Slam is a rare and highly respected milestone in the hunting community. Desert Bighorn Sheep: The Most Expensive of the Bighorns Among these species, Desert Bighorn Sheep are often considered the most expensive and challenging to hunt due to their rarity and the remote locations they inhabit. Conclusion Bighorn sheep are fascinating creatures with unique social structures, diverse habitats, and remarkable species. Whether you're interested in their role in the wild, looking to track record-breaking bighorns, or hoping to achieve a Grand Slam in sheep hunting, understanding these majestic animals enhances the experience. From Montana's Wild Horse Island to the vast landscapes of Wyoming, the pursuit of these extraordinary animals continues to captivate wildlife enthusiasts and hunters alike. About the Guest: Ben Goldfarb is an award-winning environmental journalist and prolific author known for his focus on the intersection of human activity and wildlife. His works, including Crossings: How Road Ecology Is Shaping the Future of Our Planet, explore groundbreaking ecological concepts and have been recognized by outlets such as the New York Times. Goldfarb's influential book Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter has received critical acclaim for its insightful examination of the ecological significance of beavers. He currently resides in Colorado. Episode Summary: In this episode of 90 Miles from Needles, host Chris Clarke engages in a thought-provoking dialogue with environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb. The focus is on the nuanced field of road ecology and its implications on desert ecosystems. Clarke and Goldfarb delve into the effects of roads on wildlife, touching on staggering statistics like the million animals killed by cars daily in the U.S. alone. They explore how roadkill, highways, and infrastructures challenge species such as desert tortoises and pronghorns in arid regions, combining environmental insight with ground-level observations. As the conversation unfolds, Goldfarb expands on the transformative role of road ecology—a growing scientific discipline that examines the relationship between transportation infrastructures and ecological systems. He highlights pressing issues including hydrological impacts, wildlife mobility, and innovative solutions like wildlife crossings to promote ecological connectivity. Clarke and Goldfarb also explore technologies, policies, and community efforts aimed at mitigating the adverse impacts of roads on the environment, weaving in discussions on living sustainability in desert habitats. Key Takeaways Road Ecology Definition: Road ecology is a dynamic scientific field focusing on how transportation infrastructure affects the environment, with extended applications from mitigating roadkill to supporting wildlife crossings. Impact on Desert Ecosystems: Roads in desert landscapes alter wildlife movement and hydrology, posing severe threats to species needing extensive ranges like the desert tortoise and pronghorn. Wildlife Crossings: Successful wildlife crossings such as the Liberty Canyon project are vital in reducing road mortality and ensuring wildlife connectivity, especially in regions with high biodiversity. Human Infrastructure Influence: The conversation highlights how human infrastructure can drive either positive ecological developments as in beaver habitats or embody detrimental impacts like excessive road development. Beavers in Arid Lands: Goldfarb emphasizes that beavers once played a crucial role in maintaining riparian ecosystems in deserts, underlining the potential for ecosystem restoration. Notable Quotes "Road ecology is this relatively small but fast-growing field of science that looks at all of the different connections between roads and nature." – Ben Goldfarb "Beavers are sort of integral to those systems… the amount of lush flourishing in desert landscapes is incredible." – Ben Goldfarb "Every ecological impact stems from a road to some extent. Roads are the root of all evil." – Ben Goldfarb "We happen to do it in a way that is incredibly detrimental to biodiversity." – Ben Goldfarb "In some ways, we and beavers are these weird mirror images of each other." – Ben Goldfarb Resources Ben Goldfarb's Book: Crossings: How Road Ecology Is Shaping the Future of Our Planet Ben Goldfarb's Book: Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter Don't miss out on this enlightening episode as Ben Goldfarb shares his invaluable insights into road ecology and its profound impact on desert ecosystems. About The Guest(s): Dr. Christina Aiello is a bighorn sheep biologist and research associate with Oregon State University. She has dedicated her career to studying and conserving desert wildlife, particularly desert tortoises and desert bighorn sheep. With a focus on the Mojave Desert region, Dr. Aiello's research examines the impacts of habitat loss, fragmentation, and climate change on bighorn sheep populations. Summary: Dr. Christina Aiello joins host Chris Clarke to discuss the conservation of desert bighorn sheep in the Mojave Desert. They explore the threats facing these iconic animals, including habitat loss, fragmentation, and the spread of respiratory diseases. Dr. Aiello highlights the importance of maintaining genetic diversity and connectivity between bighorn populations to ensure their long-term survival. They also discuss the potential impacts of the proposed high-speed rail project on bighorn sheep movement and the need for wildlife crossings to mitigate habitat fragmentation. Despite the challenges, Dr. Aiello remains hopeful and inspired by the resilience of desert wildlife. As a bonus, desert writer Louise Mathias offers a related commentary on the likely impact of the proposed Soda Mountain Solar Project on bighorn sheep in Mojave National Preserve. Key Takeaways: Desert bighorn sheep require rocky, high-elevation terrain with access to water and forage. Habitat loss and fragmentation from urbanization and infrastructure development are major threats to bighorn sheep populations. Bighorn sheep exhibit natural movements and rely on connectivity between habitats for genetic diversity and survival. Wildlife crossings, such as overpasses, are crucial for facilitating bighorn sheep movement and maintaining population connectivity. Bighorn sheep are susceptible to respiratory diseases, which can be introduced through contact with domestic livestock. Genetic diversity plays a vital role in bighorn sheep's ability to resist and recover from diseases. The proposed high-speed rail project in the Mojave Desert will further fragment bighorn sheep habitat and hinder their movements. Protecting and improving degraded habitats can still benefit wildlife, as they demonstrate resilience and adaptability. Quotes: "Bighorn sheep will make use of a bad situation that we hand them and get as much from that landscape as they can." - Dr. Christina Aiello "Wildlife crossings are a public health measure for bighorn sheep." - Dr. Christina Aiello Become a desert defender!: https://90milesfromneedles.com/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today on Let's Talk, Che had a chance to speak to a long-time friend Professor of Forest Ecology in the School of Forestry at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. He conducts research that examines the interface of indigenous peoples' traditional knowledge and ecological principles, conservation practices and sustainable strategies for resource management and stewardship in Canada, the United States, and Australia. Dr. Alcoze has been thinking of how forests function as a community where the whole grouping of beings is essential for the continued health of the whole. He shares some new insights into how all the small critters and big ones share our collaborative ecosystem. Cooperation keeps the whole system together. We can grow into more caring people and use Nature's models to establish ways of action that incorporate whole, diverse and healthy sustainable communities. His research and teaching, both in the United States and Canada, focus on empowering native communities to make informed decisions about natural resources management, social issues, economic development and education as ways to restore the sovereignty of First Nations. His current work includes collaborations with the Kaibab Paiute Tribe's Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks to develop a comprehensive wildlife management plan for mule deer, inventory, and Desert Bighorn Sheep to monitor other natural resources necessary to the Tribe. Research projects in partnership with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians of North Carolina helped restore traditional knowledge of burning practices that sustained early Cherokee communities. -- Connect with Che: https://coachchemarville.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chemarvilleletstalk/message

In this episode, Bill Naiman and I explore two bucket-list national parks—Zion and Bryce. Topics include when to go, where to go, where the best photo ops are and what gear to take. We both recommend purchasing National Geographic National Park series maps for their additional information and greater map detail over the NPS map handouts for planning and hiking in the park. Zion: http://astore.amazon.com/flanaganfotos-20/detail/1566952972 Bryce: http://astore.amazon.com/flanaganfotos-20/detail/1566953200 We also both recommend the series of books by Laurent Martres on Southwest photography: http://astore.amazon.com/flanaganfotos-20/detail/0916189236 for planning your next trip to the Southwest. Bill describes some off the beaten path locations and hikes including the Kolob Canyon area and State Route-9, the road to the east entrance and on to Bryce Canyon, passing Checkerboard Mesa on the way. Still on Highway 9 are the Desert Bighorn Sheep that are on the road or near the road as you drive toward the East entrance. We go on to talk about Bryce Canyon National Park about an hour-and-a-half from Zion. Discussion includes where to stay, we recommend Ruby’s Inn https://www.rubysinn.com/ near the park entrance, when to shoot, shooting from the rim, the Queen’s Garden Trail and the Navajo Trail through the hoodoo’s for different photo ops.
