Ramesh Anand has become known among Desis for his dedication to caring for strays and the non-profit that he created for this effort. Science and the Sea podcast

A few years ago, some scientists in Australia got a tip from a city council member in a town in the state of Queensland, on the country's northeastern coast: Some unusual spiders were appearing on the beaches of a nearby town during especially low tides. The scientists checked it out. And their analysis revealed that the spider belonged to a species that hadn't been cataloged before. So they recorded its details—an adult male is about a quarter of an inch long, a female about 50 percent larger, for example. And they gave it a name: Desis bobmarleyi—Bob Marley's Intertidal Spider. The name was inspired by a song by the Reggae singer and writer, “High Tide or Low Tide.” The name seemed fitting for the spider, which lives full-time in the zone between the limits of high and low tides. When the tide is high, the spider finds a small air pocket in the rocks, coral, a barnacle shell, or a clump of seaweed. It then spins a web to seal the entrance to the pocket, so it can survive for hours while submerged. One of the spiders found by the research team, for example, had created a nest in a coral that was as much as 10 feet deep at high tide.Bobmarleyi comes out to eat at low tide. It catches tiny organisms on the rocks, plants, coral, or debris that's washed up on the beach. And when the tide rolls back in, it walls itself up again—waiting for the next chance to come out of its water-tight home on the Australian beach.

Ezio Manzini is one of the world's leading and provocative thinkers in design for sustainability and social innovation — considered a major driver of sustainable changes. These two joint interests led him to start DESIS: an international network of schools of design specifically active in the field of design for social innovation and sustainability. Currently, Ezio is President of DESIS Network and Honorary Professor at the Politecnico di Milano. He has been guest professor in several design schools world-wide such as Elisava-Design School and Engineering (Barcelona), Tongji University (Shanghai), University of the Arts (London), CPUT (Cape town), and Parsons - The new School for Design (NYC). Ezio has written many books and papers on service design and social innovation. His most recent books are: 'Design, When Everybody Designs', 'Politics of the Everyday' and lately 'Livable Proximity'. In this episode, Ezio invites us to reimagine the role of design in building a sustainable and resilient world. In particular, he talks about how our contemporary society has become a “careless society” and how design can help create conditions that afford care and nurture relations. He highlights the complex relation between care and proximity and based on his most recent book, discusses the notion of livable proximity and how a city that cares look like. Finally, he discusses the notion of social innovation, and stresses that if there is value in emergent, bottom-up social innovation, we need to nurture them and that this requires a new type of social infrastructure. Import bans have made goods from overseas disappear. Protestors marched to the Presidential mansion, stormed the gate and found the place deserted. The family of President Gotabya Rajapaksa - who fled to Singapore and resigned by email - had concentrated power in his family which was badly leading the country. His successor Ranil Wickremewinghe appointed a friend of Rajapaksa as Prime Minister, which only infuriated the people further. Meanwhile the economy is in shambles. We asked Sri Lankan George Willy, who normally talks about immigration matters, and his wife Shanti, to guide us through the messy situation in their homeland. 5:00 pm Navin Soni has not just a passion for painting but he also believes in playing it forward by mentoring young kids in his native city Bhuj in Gujarat to enter the arts. His immense skills have been in high demand as a former pupil of the Swaminarayan Vadtal gadi, Rajkot Gurukul. He has spent the past two weeks in Plano developing artwork for a new book that will be unveiled on August 6. Navin bhai joins us today from New Jersey to explain his inspiration as an artist. 5:20 pm As part of an ongoing series entitled “Americanisation of Desis” we talk to young second Genner Vani Jain to describe what being an Indo American in today's world has meant for her. She is a junior at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business. We asked her to share her experiences growing up and which ones she felt defined her best as an American Desi! You can take a desi out of their country, but you can't take the country out of the desi. Desi people are notorious for acting differently around other desis compared to their non-desi counterparts. In this episode we talk about how desis expect other desis to do things that they would never ask a non-desi to do.

Is there a racial hierarchy when it comes to dating outside of our community? How difficult would it be to go against the 20-30 years of conditioning we've all had on what an acceptable partner looks like? And how does religion add in a third layer where most in the West only struggle with the "interracial" aspect of a mixed marriage? These are the questions Shabnum explores on this week's episode with Zara, Angie, and Tej. Zara is a British Pakistani woman from the UK who fell in love with a white British man from a Christian family. Zara tells us about navigating religion and marriage as a Desi and as a Muslim when these aspects of her identity were very important to her. Angie is Chinese American, and Tej is Indian American and the two talk about breaking the news to their own families while navigating how Sikhism fits into the picture. This episode is a really important one in understanding how Desis all over the world are for the first point in time breaking the established notion of what a successful marriage must look like on such a large scale . Host: Shabnum Gulati Guests: Zara Hadid, Angie Fu, Tej Dhillon Illustration: Hanifa Abdul Hameed Music: AnAkkiN on SoundCloud

In this episode, Shabnum is joined by Masterchef star, author, and celebrated Instagram blogger Hetal Vasavada on the unique place food holds in our culture. Desis have a complicated relationship with food. We all know that our mothers and grandmothers will force feed us until we're about to explode, but are also the same women that will berate us for gaining weight. What we don't always talk about though is the social capital that food has in our culture. There are certain gender norms associated with food, and food is distributed as a means of celebration - often in a way that has a debt associated to it. We also cover on the episode how food for Desis usually goes beyond social into the realm of political capital. Indian Independence is owed in large part to a series of hunger strikes, and hunger striking as a means of political protest is a custom that continues to this day. We also say a lot with food by using it as a means of ascertaining caste or religion. Join us in this conversation as we explore the many ways in which food holds more than just nutritional value for us! Host: Shabnum Gulati Guest: Hetal Vasavada Illustration: Hanifa Abdul HameedMusic: AnAkkiN on Soundcloud

"Am I Desi enough? Am I TOO Desi?" If you're South Asian, chances are you've asked yourself these questions before. In this episode I speak with the ladies of the podcast Redefining ABCD: Sneha & Keerthi! Two Tamilian-Americans, they question what ABCD culture is, and discuss how to turn the "confused" in ABCD and into "confident." We also discuss the trappings of a "hyphenated identity": having labels such as "oreo" or "fob" assigned to you, and knowing how to distinguish between your and your community's voice in your head. Finally, we talk about preserving culture as a new South Asian microculture, and what our role as overseas Desis is in forging a new collective identity for our communities. Check out Part 1 of this conversation on Redefining ABCD's podcast for Tanushree's feature, where we talk about career moves and education. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-desi-condition/support

We hear about his major influences like @RyanLeslie and @champagnepapi, both of whom have mastered the art of rapping and singing together. Nish educates us on the intricacies of the #Bengali language when writing lyrics to Western beats and melodies, and tells us the story of how he met his mentor @mumzystranger. Mumzy also joins us in this conversation and, together with Nish, talks about creating a new movement amongst #Desis. Some gems dropped during the episode include: leave your ego at the door when you come into the studio, and don't wait for life to happen. Stay tuned until the very end for an amazing vocal rendition by Nish, and be sure to check out his newest banger - #Xoss!
