Dilapidated and vacant buildings are more than eyesores for the community. They can lower property value and impact safety. But before starting up the bulldozers, Landmarks Illinois wants property owners and city governments to consider renovation and restoration. Their latest list of endangered historic places includes the Spivey Building in East St. Louis and various Meramec Caverns Barns including one in Madison County. Quinn Adamowski, regional manager of advocacy for Landmarks Illinois explains why renovation helps communities more than demolition and what successful rehabilitation looks like.
Laura Stotts is a North Carolina photographer, genealogist, and writer known as Diary of Abandonment, dedicated to the lost histories of abandoned houses. We begin with her recent preservation work, a field day chinking a cabin at the world's largest collection of log structures. Then we're in the deep end as Laura shares her moving life story, from her trials of addiction & hopelessness to finding a divine calling & a meaningful connection to God, a journey of healing paved with synchronicities that involved abandoned places, saving the life of an elderly veteran and the funeral of a Tuskegee Airman lost since WWII. From there we get into the rubble and hear about her adventures exploring abandoned houses: from booby-traps; to an unhinged & armed landowner; to an ominous basement; and a haunting story about finding a stack of WWII letters between sons at war and their mother & wives at home. We come to an end of this subtly gothic episode, hearing of illuminating dreams in which Laura's grandparents delivered important encouragement about her role as the family historian, furthering her appreciation for the difficult lives of her ancestors.Check out Laura's website Diary of Abandonment and follow her on Instagram and Facebook. When I say stand hunting, I'm not referring to sitting in a deer stand and waiting for rabbits to show up. (Unless you always see rabbits from your deer stand, in which case, do that!) Instead, I'm talking about setting up within gun range of excellent rabbit cover that is impossible to flush rabbits from and waiting for them to emerge. Ambush hunting is another way to put it. Dilapidated farmhouses, piles of irreparable farm equipment, unwalkable brushy cover, and the like are perfect places for ambush hunting rabbits. The key element here is that, once you're set up, hold very, very still.

The dilapidated Gordon Wilson Flats in Wellington will keep their heritage label - for now. RMA Minister Chris Bishop has rejected a last-minute move to remove heritage listings for a number of buildings to make way for development. But he has given the green light to a range of housing recommendations, with hopes to encourage intensification in the city. Chris Bishop says there wasn't enough information at the table to remove the heritage listing. "If someone presented to me expert evidence as to why a variety of these buildings were not significant enough to be covered by a heritage listing, then I could do that." EPISODE 456: In this week's episode of The Real Estate InvestHER Show, we sit down with the brilliant Katie Neason. Katie is a real estate entrepreneur, an active investor and an incremental developer. She started out investing in 2006 buying a one-bedroom condo for $17,000 and then house hacked her horse barn by turning a space into an apartment and rented it out. After that, Katie began buying vacant fourplexes out of bankruptcy, renovating them, leasing them up and selling them to investors, before pivoting to fixing and flipping single-family houses in her hometown of Bryan, Texas. Katie spent 7 years in commercial banking and 7 years on the executive team of a startup company as the Real Estate Development Officer before taking the leap and quitting her W-2 job to become a full time real estate investor. In the last few years, Katie's vision and passion has expanded to include reviving dilapidated and abandoned buildings in and around the city center of her hometown and redeveloping city lots to construct beautifully designed mixed-use buildings. In this episode, Katie will be sharing with us her journey, how she is developing boutique apartments despite the rising costs, why creating vibrant neighborhoods is a must, the intricacies of urban revitalization through real estate development, and more. Why does this retreat feel like a horror movie? All you wanted was peace and quiet; a chance to unplug and unwind. But instead of a stress-free sojourn, you've stepped into a nightmare. The calming influence of the crackling fire is the only thing keeping you steady. The howling wind hurls dead leaves against the cabin, distorting other sounds. Dilapidated floorboards groan as you move to the window, momentarily brave enough to peek outside. Silhouetted by the quarter moon, a lone wolf releases a mournful cry into the darkness. Creaking shutters set your teeth on edge; distant thunder warns of an impending storm. Was that a scream…or just a trick of your imagination? Gravel crunches underfoot; is someone – or something - lurking in the shadows? Your mind is going numb with fear. Logic tells you to stay put; you will only become hopelessly lost in the nighttime woods. All you can do is hold on until daybreak. The ceaseless ticking of the clock on the mantle reminds you that it's going to be a very long night. --- Enjoy our 5 part Spooky Soundscapes series this Halloween season! Dilapidated by years of internal conflict and ruinous mismanagement, the caliphate was a mere shadow of its former self. The void left by its collapse had led to the rise of adversaries which now surrounded the capital province and threatened the state's very existence. Not only was the treasury empty, but the state's armies were divided and their leaders still quarreled over scraps. These were the unfortunate conditions of al Muhtadi's reign, and the powerless caliph could do little to reform the situation.

State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. recently put Stony Brook University on blast for the sorry state of the Stony Brook Southampton campus, charging that by failing to meet its stewardship commitment to the 80-acre site, the state university had become “the biggest slumlord on the East End” and was squandering an opportunity to use the campus as an economic engine for the region. Thiele joins the editors on the podcast this week to elaborate on his concerns, including about several dormitories that have been condemned and the condition of Southampton Hall, which once served as the center of campus life dating back to the days when Southampton College, a satellite of Long Island University, occupied the site.

He took me to the coast and walked me past The fair, the candyfloss, the arcade games, And then he pulled me playfully Inside the little sea life centre. Dilapidated and unloved But still it teemed with screaming kids. I let him pay, it was a first date after all. And then we entered underwater love, Hand in hand as we travelled deeper, deeper Into ocean halls. He stopped in front of jelly fish And stared at tentacles that changed with light From blue, to yellow, to flaming red. They're my favourite, he said Never peeling eyes from fish. I watched in fascination And as they drifted past the glass In long and lazy undulating circles. I realised probably They were my favourite too.
