The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
Dr. Al Grauer hosts. Dr. Albert D. Grauer ( @Nmcanopus ) is an observational asteroid hunting astronomer. Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006. travelersinthenight.org Today's 2 topics: - Anyone who thinks women can't do computers and science needs to meet my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Rose Matheny. On a recent 3 night observing run at the 60 inch telescope on Mt. Lemmon, Rose took over the world of asteroid hunting when she posted 82 new potentially Earth approaching objects on the Minor Planet Center's NEO Confirmation Page. For the next several days telescopes around the world obtained additional data on Rose's discoveries. When the dust settled 29 of Rose's discoveries were proved to be Earth approaching objects, 32 are other asteroids which don't come near enough our home planet to be interesting, and the rest need more data to figure out what they are. - Comets are made up of organic materials and ices of various substance which are left over from the formation of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago. When the gravity of a nearby star or other object changes one of these dirty snowball's orbit, its path can bring it into the inner solar system and thus near enough for the Sun to affect it and for us to study what is going on. Our consciousness co-creates our reality, and unfortunately for most of us born into the false matrix, our subconscious is filled with artificial programs which perpetuate the planetary enslavement system. Even if one may be “awake” in the conscious mind, without deep self-inquiry and excavation of the Root Chakra, creating a new world remains a fantasy. Not many people know just how multidimensional our Root chakra is, and how influential it is in the co-creation of our World. Many superficial teachings exist in the new age about manifestation, but few people know that these surface-level techniques like the law of attraction are slippery slopes into reversal magic, and are bland in comparison to the original laws and processes of Sacred Co-Creation. In this week's Starseed Mission Support, we dive deep into the Root Chakra, and its profound multidimensional qualities which make it indispensable in a Starseed's success. It's especially important for highly coded starseeds to fully recognize the depth of our Innate Creational Power, and to make daily steps towards the embodied expression of this Power!Gridwork Healing & Clearing at the end of the episode: (Timestamp: 1:11:40)We complete this transmissions with another healing and activation ceremony, and today's code has to do with a mysterious part of our lightbody around our heart chakra that was one of our original channels of communication between us and our world. Think Avatar, the movie. I'm excited to explore and re-awaken this primordial part of our lightbody, and attempt to co-create with all of you a Planetary Activation as well for All of Humanity!Social Media #'s: For Events & Community Connection FOLLOW US on…IG: @earthstar.academyYT: @earthstar.academyJoin the Mothership!! >>> www.earthstar.academySign up for our Newsletter!I LOVE YOU!! The upcoming federal election is a crucial moment for the country's future. Can the relationship between journalists and politicians be repaired?

In this episode of The Horn, Alan talks to Dr Suliman Baldo, Executive Director of the Sudan Transparency and Policy Tracker, about the dire state of Sudan six months into the war between Sudan's armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and whether Sudan has already collapsed. They assess the current military dynamics across the country and the internal dynamics within both the RSF and the Sudanese armed forces, as well as why there has been no serious progress towards a ceasefire. They talk about how both parties' mobilisation of different ethnic groups amplifies further social tensions among the population. They also discuss the involvement of outside actors in the conflict and why existing peace efforts have failed to make any meaningful progress. For more in-depth analysis of the topics discussed in this episode, check out our Sudan country page. In episode 39, Chris and Emma talked with Dr. Joey Lawrence, a PDA autistic person, clinical psychologist, and neurodiversity advocate living and working in Australia. In this episode, we discussed neurodivergent lived experiences and how we think about and talk about these aspects of our lives with partners, clients, and at the societal level. The importance of mutual understanding was a part of this discussion, and how difficult it can be to attain.Joey shared her experiences from multiple viewpoints since she is a gifted, autistic PDAer who also is a clinician working in practice with neurodivergent clients. She discussed PDA as the persistent drive for autonomy and explained that anything that impinges on autonomy—whether that impingement is perceived or actual—causes a dysregulating response. We learned that PDA people don't respond well to traditional approaches. We discussed relationships and the challenges of balancing our passions and interests with partners who may not operate from the same level of intensity. And we also addressed the struggle of talking about giftedness in neurodiversity spaces where it is often dismissed or seen as elitist, ableist, or otherwise problematic. Not to mention that Joey and Emma live in Australia, where they feel there is a sense of erasure around giftedness.Chris talked about the desire to be “normal” and how difficult it can feel to accept ourselves and be authentic when others perceive us as too intense. Joey described the experience of unmasking and discovering that being herself sometimes derailed relationships. We talked about Joey's work as a psychologist using TPD in practice in Australia. Chris mentioned the struggle of reaching the people who need help when we are so limited due to licensure and regulations. We agreed that we need a different kind of field since what we're talking about is guiding people through the process of positive disintegration. We need to revolutionize the mental health system because people who need help are so frequently traumatized by their experiences in the current system. While wrapping up this episode, Joey said that Dąbrowski was creating a system dynamics theory before there was system dynamics, which resonated. She said we need to go through positive disintegration at the societal level, and this is the neurodiversity movement. We cause harm when viewing distressing human experiences as pathology. We have to shift our way of thinking, not only the content of our thoughts.Resources from this episodeJoey shares her lived experience on TikTok, and you can also find her on Instagram.Joey is the Director of Neudle PsychologyThe paper Chris and Joey mentioned at the beginning of the episode [PDF]Conversations on Gifted Trauma podcastEmma's video on Disintegrating in a RelationshipAre you a Thought Dancer? blogEmbracing Intensity podcastIf This is a Gift, Can I Send it Back? by Jen MerrillAutistic Researchers Researching Autism (Facebook group)Social links and other info:Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/positivedisintegrationpod)Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/positivedisintegration_podcast/)Join the Adults with Overexcitabilities group on FacebookJoin Dabrowski Center and Positive Disintegration Podcast Community on FacebookPlease, consider supporting the podcast. In episode 29, Chris and Emma discussed The Ugly Duckling, the classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, from the perspectives of giftedness, neurodivergence, and positive disintegration. We discussed aspects of our personal journeys and the impact of discovering Dąbrowski's theory, and how these relate back to themes in the tale. Some of the themes we cover include—the realization in our 40s that we're happier than we ever expected to be, overcoming the feeling of brokenness, and the traumas that accumulate over a lifetime of being gifted and an outlier. We also discuss the experience of dynamisms, Dark Nights of the Soul, appreciating the process of positive disintegration, and learning to be grateful for certain kinds of suffering. We talk about growth not being automatic, but hard-won, and the work involved in inner transformation. The experience of discovering OEs—and the moment of self-recognition—is very important for many coming to terms with who they are. Emma talked about the three elements involved:* The initial discovery of OE* Understanding one's own OE profile* Self-acceptanceWe've made it our mission to bring the theory and OEs to other people. We're building community and offering the opportunity for connection to anyone who needs us. We also want to hang the ‘mirror' of OE in as many places as possible, so people can experience the same magic of self-recognition the Ugly Duckling did!QuotesThe full quote Chris mentioned (~23:50) is: “Suffering, if we experience it correctly, makes us sensitive to the suffering of others, awakens in us a new awareness, and creates a breach in our excessively egocentric attitude toward the surrounding world.” (Dabrowski, Personality-Shaping through Positive Disintegration, pp. 30-31)Quotes from The Ugly Duckling:* “I never dreamed there could be so much happiness, when I was the ugly duckling.”* “He felt quite glad that he had come through so much trouble and misfortune, for now he had a fuller understanding of his own good fortune, and of beauty when he met with it.”* “Being born in a duck yard does not matter, if only you are hatched from a swan's egg.”Links for this episodeThe Ugly Ducking (The original story)The Ugly Duckling: A Story of Giftedness and Disintegration (Emma's blog post)Conversations on Gifted Trauma by InterGiftedChris's “Quote Collages” are on the Dabrowski page. A Gaia EDR3 search for tidal tails in disintegrating open clusters by Souradeep Bhattacharya et al. on Monday 19 September We carry out a search for tidal tails in a sample of open clusters with known relatively elongated morphology. We identify the member stars of these clusters from the precise astrometric and deep photometric data from $Gaia$ Early Data Release 3 using the robust membership determination algorithm, ML-MOC. We identify 46 open clusters having a stellar corona beyond the tidal radius, 20 of which exhibit extended tails aligned with the cluster orbit direction in galactocentric coordinates. Notably we find NGC 6940 (at a distance of $sim1$ kpc) is the furthest open cluster exhibiting tidal tails that are $sim50$ pc from its center, while also identifying $sim40$ pc long tidal tails for the nearby Pleiades. Using the minimum spanning tree length for the most massive stars relative to all cluster members, we obtain the mass segregation ratio ($rmlambda_{MSR}$) profiles as a function of the number of massive stars in each cluster. From these profiles, we can classify the open clusters into four classes based on the degree of mass segregation experienced by the clusters. We find that clusters in the most mass segregated classes are the oldest on average and have the flattest mass function slope. Of the 46 open clusters studied in this work, 41 exhibit some degree of mass segregation. Furthermore, we estimate the initial masses (M$rm_{i}$) of these open clusters finding that some of them, having M$rm_{i}gtrsim 10^{4} M_{odot}$, could be the dissolving remnants of Young Massive Clusters. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.08259v1
When Red Skelton was drafted in March 1944, Ozzie Nelson was prompted to create his own family situation comedy. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet launched October 8, 1944, on CBS, it moved to NBC in October 1948, then made a late season switch back to CBS in April 1949. The final years of the radio series were on ABC (the former NBC Blue Network) from October 14, 1949, to June 18, 1954. In total 402 radio episodes were produced. In an arrangement that exemplified the growing pains of American broadcasting, as radio "grew up" into television, the Nelsons' deal with ABC gave the network the option to move their program to television. The struggling network needed proven talent that was not about to defect to the more established and wealthier networks like CBS or NBC.

“They want to control everything. They want to not only control resources, they want to control the behavior of the people, they also want to control the mind, control people's thoughts.” In this episode, we take a look at one of the largest grassroots movements in the world. For the past two decades, millions of Chinese have been secretly renouncing their affiliation to China's Communist Party and its affiliate organizations. The movement, called Tuidang, or Quitting the Chinese Communist Party, has recorded nearly 400 million such renunciations. I sit down with Sen Nieh, vice president of the Global Service Center for Quitting the Chinese Communist Party. He's also a professor at the Catholic University of America. “It's about how Chinese people try to break out of the bondage of communism,” says Nieh. We discuss this movement and we also take a deeper look at the draconian lockdowns in China. It's a decades-old playbook, Nieh says. Many adolescents experience the phenomenon of The Disintegrating Student. It is often described to me by parents and colleagues alike. These students have always done well in school with very little effort but then their grades start to decline as work piles up. This ultimately leads to increased anxiety and impacts a child's self-worth. These bright students are still bright, but as today's guest explains, they've hit a rigor tipping point and they don't have the skills to deal with challenges by asking for help. Today's guest is Dr. Jeannine Jannot, author of The Disintegrating Student: Struggling but Smart and Falling Apart… and How to Turn it Around. She is passionate about helping students and young adults be productive and well, in both school and life. As a mother of three, she has witnessed first-hand the challenges our children face, quickly becoming a familiar pattern of good students falling apart. Today, with escalating numbers of students failing their virtual classes during the pandemic, disintegrating students have become a nationwide crisis. The good news is, something can be done to help these adolescents develop a growth mindset and redefine success. Our achievement-focused culture is certainly exposed now and change will be slow and gradual, but as parents, there are ways we can help The Disintegrating Student. Show Notes: [1:39] - Welcome to the show, Dr. Jannot! [2:36] - The Disintegrating Student is a term that Dr. Jannot coined. [3:30] - Dr. Jannot was seeing many students in academic coaching and noticed that children and adolescents were hitting a rigor tipping point. [4:32] - These students in their early years breeze through school with ease until they hit the rigor tipping point and don't have the skills to deal with challenges. [5:47] - Not handing in work is a red flag. Dr. Jannot describes what the child and parent may think is happening. [7:26] - The Disintegrating Student worries about no longer “being smart” and that their parents care more about their grades than them. [9:32] - There are a lot of gifted students with ADHD that get to a point where they are less able to compensate for weaker skills. [11:11] - What are some skills that The Disintegrating Student needs support with? [12:09] - Changing a limited mindset to a growth mindset is key. [14:54] - Parents can help by helping less. Dr. Jannot explains what she means by this. [16:13] - Our parenting is greatly impacted by our achievement focused culture. [17:55] - In some cases, we do too much to help and it sends the message that they are not able to do things themselves. [19:59] - Praise the process rather than the outcome. [21:46] - Listen for curiosity and empathy instead of jumping to solving a problem. [23:03] - The achievement culture has been exposed in a big way due to remote learning. [25:00] - Dr. Jannot describes what she has seen in students as they have returned to school after the COVID-19 school closures. [26:09] - Our current definition of success are data points. We need to redefine success and normalize making mistakes. [28:38] - Honest conversations are the way forward and being able to ask questions. [30:40] - You can find out more about Dr. Jeannine Jannot and purchase her book on her website.
