At the age of 16, Shinedoe was already comfortable in the club. The Dutch artist started dancing at parties as a part-time job while studying before finding her way behind the decks. She landed her first big DJ booking at Amsterdam club Paradiso at the tender age of 19 and her first single, "Dilemma," from 2004, quickly became an Ibiza favourite. All of this is to say that she knows how to move a room. Influenced by Detroit techno pioneers like Robert Hood, Shinedoe's mixes and productions are full of jacking kicks and big-room basslines. Funky, slamming rhythms are her forte and even when she focuses on minimalist tech house or darker sounds, there's always some zest sprinkled in, in the form of electro and breaks. For her RA Podcast, the Intacto Records and Music That Moves founder offers a variety of powerful techno cuts. There's DJ Godfather's turntablist take, her own acid-tinged mindbenders and a hard, no-nonsense banger from Glasgow duo Slam to conclude. Listen here: https://avoidant.fanlink.to/darkplanet With techno originally hailed as The House Sound of Detroit - there's no denying the motor city has its own definitive genre: Ghetto Tech. A true pioneer of the sound, DJ Godfather, like so many in Detroit was inspired by local radio - WJLB, The Electrifying Mojo and Jeff ‘The Wizard' Mills - but for Brian Jeffries, aka DJ Godfather, it was scratch DJs, hip hop and DMC battles that kick-started his love for turntablism. Playing house parties and teen clubs as a 15-year-old, DJ Godfather quickly learned how to keep a dancefloor hot - and having actually purchased The Wizards' turntables from the man Jeff Mills himself, DJ Godfather honed his craft. At 17 he found himself playing downtown bars and gigs in the suburbs, before taking off to warehouse raves and illegal parties, like those at Detroit's Packard Plant.  An intimidating force behind the decks, he's known to drop 60-to-70 records in a one hour DJ set, with plenty of flair, beat juggling and Detroit hustle in between. With his first solo record coming through the Twilight ‘76 label he set up in 1994, DJ Godfather would go on to establish the Databass imprint - still going strong with 150-plus releases - along with a specialised set of sub-labels including Juke Trax and D.E.T. Only. For more than 25 years now DJ Godfather has been an advocate for ghetto tech at large, consistently drawing the biggest daytime crowd year-for-year at Detroit's Movement Festival - uniting juke and jit dancers alike - while also exploring a myriad of genres like Miami bass, footwork, electro and more. Hooking up with the likes of Keith Tucker, Andrea Parker and DJs Deeon, Detroit Grand Pubahs and Fat Boy Slim over the years, it was only in 2020 that he saw the release of his 44 track debut solo album, Electro Beats For Freaks. Following that up in 2021 with a 46-track second LP titled This Thing Of Ours, and the 2022 D3T.3L3CTR0 album - DJ Godfather never loses faith in how his music can bring different people and genres together. “To me ghetto tech is a culture; mixing techno, house, electro, and booty records to create one vibe,” he says. “I do ghetto tech records because it's me. My one music that I'm passionate about. The Local Selection Mix returns with jarring mix of techno, breaks, electro & ghetto house from DDR resident, Katie Tynan. The up and coming selector has provided a bold and bouncy selection of up-tempo cuts, an abundance of playful samples and efficacious beats make for a thrilling ride. Katie takes great influence from ghetto house legends such as DJ Deeon and DJ Godfather, the young selector finds joy in blending these with homegrown influences and old school flavours such as rave classics and hard house. Tynan's mixing etiquette can be described as raw and rapid. Katie thrives in quick mixing and mixing off the fly, the adrenaline of fast paced and somewhat dubious mixing excites the young selector. The Dublin based selector is still quite new to DJ'ing after only picking it up a year ago and what was once a hobby has now become an obsession and passion project. Some early mixes with DDR helped shape the selectors sound and offered a platform to showcase where she was at musically. Further mixes for Wwwirl and Laetitia gave Tynan the confidence to look for some gigs and approach DDR for a monthly slot on the station. Katie's my first gig came in October of 2021 in Wigwam for the opening weekend for nightclubs. The landmark gig for Tynan went down a treat and displayed her skill as DJ in a club setting. Katie's Local Selection Mix is a brisk and playful trip through Katie's favourite genres. The young selector runs through techno to trance to bassy experiments with great ease. Quick transitions and genre switches make for a playful and audacious trip. That CD and digital release featured many of the guests that had appeared on the Bass Agenda Radio show in its first year, such as w1b0, The Exaltics, Sync24, Scape One, The Hidden Persuader, and Alavux. Since 2013 the label has put out over 100 releases on digital, vinyl, CD, and USB formats spanning the various nuanced styles in the Electro genre, and Techno too. Just like the radio show, the focus of the Bass Agenda label is on exploring the wide range of sounds out there and doing so by releasing music by brand new talents, established artists doing new things, and some of the Electro genre's biggest names. The label has been championed since its inception by Dave Clarke and has grown over the years to become a regular source of tracks for home DJs, podcasters, magazines, and some the world's biggest names, including Juan Atkins, DJ Stingray, Helena Hauff, UMEK, Alienata, and many more. In 2020 Bass Agenda Recordings curated and released CAREBOT$, a massive 100+ tracks compilation raising money for NHS Charities Together and Médecins Sans Frontières Covid-19 initiatives. So far, the CAREBOT$ has raised over £10,000. After this project Andy Barton, who runs all things Bass Agenda, decided the label would take a break. DJ Godfather (Brian Jeffries) is one of the founding fathers of the Detroit Ghettotech scene. Godfather started DJing at the age of 15 and within a few months was already playing in clubs and after-hour parties across the Motor City. By the age of 17 DJ Godfather had started making music and a year later, released his first solo record on Twilight 76 (the label he started with DJ Dick and Brian Gillespie). The creation of other labels followed, including the influential Databass, which he revived in 2018. With a career spanning nearly 3 decades, Godfather continues to deliver the goods as well as supporting new Detroit talent, as his Godfather moniker implies. Last year Godfather dropped his 'Electro Beats For Freaks' 44 track bombshell, well, he's back, this time with a brand new 46 track 'This Detroit Thing Of Ours' album, featuring singles and collaborations with some of the very best in the business. The album features 46 tracks and like his last album, they segue into one another, until the series of EPs on vinyl (and digital) which will follow featuring full length versions and different mixes of some of the album's tracks. Because of his fast handicraft mixing and scratching he quickly became regionally known and in the course of this he quickly got a residence in the old "Club Achtermai" and Seilfabrik in Zwickau. His sound spectrum has always been influenced by names such as Bad Boy Bill, Takkyu Ishino or DJ Godfather and therefore clearly moves somewhere between Ghettotech, Chicago and Detroit. The words "Yeah Man Yeah Man!" from none other than Claude Young have always inspired his DJ craft.
