Episode 67 – Get Ready for Rhinebeck Segments this week include – Wips, FOs, Knitting Fail, Wearables and Out and About – getting ready for Rhinebeck edition Quick reminder, Pont du Marais shawl is on sale for podcast listeners – use code FOG to get 30% off through Friday, 10/18 Wips Christmas socks for Thing 2 – finished 1st, turned heel this morning for 2nd. A few rows on the latest Hitchhiker – then I put it down and decided to save it for Rhinebeck Knitting. FOs Taking Flight – done and blocking, needs ends woven in Knitting Fail What happens when you finish a sock at Legoland... and have nothing to cut the yarn so you can start the 2nd? Wearables Mommy’s Tunic – one of my patterns, knit in the discontinued Be Sweet Bamboo.  Wore this on a recent warm day Empire Tunic by Lily Go made in discontinued Frog Tree Picoboo, a cotton bamboo blend.  ¾ sleeve tunic that crosses over the bust, perfect for the in-between fall weather and leggings Changing Staircases 2 – designed by Dragon Hoard Yarns and knit up in Great Adirondack Yarn bamboo/cotton blend that I picked up at Rhinebeck last year Changing Staircases – knit up in Fiber Lady’s Mousou 100% Bamboo Out and About Rhinebeck!  New York Sheep & Wool Starts Thursday 10/17 – Sunday 10/20 at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, NY.  In a minute I’m going to go over some Tips For First Timers, but first lets do logistics.  I will be there Saturday and Sunday likely almost all day both days.  Feel free to stop me and say “Hi!” if you see me.  On Saturday I will be at the Ravelry Meetup at noon on The Hill, and at the Podcaster meetup at 1, also on The Hill.  On Sunday I will be at the Leaping Llama Contest in Bldg 34 at 11:15, and possibly at the Ravelry Meetup right afterwards, depending on timing.  The rest of the time I’ll be walking around, shopping, knitting, spinning and soaking up the general awesomeness. Terminology – I’ve already used some words you might not understand if you haven’t been before The Hill – there are several small hills on the property and this confused me so much the first year I went. Look at the fairgrounds map – The Hill is just above the petting zoo.  It’s a wide open hillside where lots of folks can gather The Buildings – shorthand for Buildings A, B, C, D and 41 which is really one large building divided into sections. Sometimes also refers to Building E, the food hall The Barns – a group of much smaller, free standing, well, barns, on the far side from The Buildings. Building 22 has Upper and Lower levels (separate entrances), the rest are all 1 story Food – lines are crazy from 11:30 to 2 – eat before or after if you can.   Link to Map Seating – there are lots of places to sit, scattered around.  However, if you have issues with mobility, bring a chair in your car and have someone in your party go get it for you.  The paths or paved, but the fairground is all small hills.  Sit down if you need to, it’s not worth getting hurt.   Bags – try not to bring a backpack.  I made this mistake the first year, and you keep bumping into people by accident, it’s not worth it.   Book Signings & Author Talks – lots of fiber authors there, check out the link in the shownotes and make a note of who you want to see. On a related note – Make A List On Paper!  - Check out the list of vendors (link to searchable page) Cell phone signal is spotty.  Don’t count on having it – write down what you want to do, what time it is and where it is.  Speaking of spotty cell signal – it affects the vendors too.  If you have cash you won’t be stuck waiting while the vendor tries to process your card – and some of the bigger vendors will have a fast Cash-Only line. What am I bringing? Purse & 2 resuable shopping bags Water bottles – large one for the car, smaller one for carrying around in my purse. Larabars or healthy snack to combat the junkfood lol Cash Easy knitting – hitchhiker or a sock or both for walking around Intermediate knitting for hanging out with friends and dinner, etc Drop spindle and fiber Folding Chair Spinning Wheel & fiber for if I get tired and need to sit for a while   What am I wearing? Haven’t decided yet, probably my Frosted sweater by Lisa K Ross or Dancing Dragons Coat by Heike Campbell over a Mommy’s Tunic or Second Grace by Bristol Ivy.  I’ll probably have a shawl each day as well and maybe a hat or mitts.  I’ll have layers underneath to keep warm because I am always cold.  I will probably wear warm, well-loved boots the first day and sneakers the second

Wear your knits. Tip: pick your hand knits first. Choose the rest of your outfit accordingly! Shoes should be comfy (and not new). Something you won't mind if they get covered in muck. Bag/purse- try not to make it too big. Camera- capture the fun. For me, iPhone is great. Pen + paper- in case you see a pattern you want to jot down name of etc. If you're a digital person you could take photos and jot them down later. Check out vendor list in advance. Make list of MUST go to vendors and where they are located. Make list of what you'd like to buy yarn for. Put list of what you need on phone/paper (something that doesn't require internet) cell service is getting better but can still be spotty. Bring snacks/water. Aim to eat at non-traditional times. Everyone wants to get lunch at 12 or 1. It's hard to do when you just want to shop and see and chat. I recommend setting timers on your phone if you're the type who can get lost in the day. Bing a mix of cash and card if possible. Food vendors sometimes only take cash Some booths line for cash and one for cards. if have both- you can pick shorter line. Don't pack too much knitting. Simple sock etc. bring extra sock needle or hat needle. You may want to cast on right  away! Many things at the really packed booths at Rhinebeck DO SELL OUT. Some vendors bring stock for Sunday. Some don't. Many people like to do a loop before committing to things but if there's only a couple and you're going to majorly regret it if its gone later. Consider buying it on the first pass. Because of diversity we will excel.   We think broadly about diversity and everything that makes us unique.  It is core to our mission. Our differences make the MGH a more interesting and distinctive environment in which to work and are an important means of providing the very best care to every one of our patients, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, religion, age, sexual orientation, disabilities, life experiences, geographic backgrounds, skills and talents among others. We will not excel without recognizing and appreciating everyone’s perspectives. Through inclusion we will respect.  Together we work hard to make this hospital a diverse and inclusive place of healing. Encouraging a broad range of opinions, ideas and perspectives drives creativity, innovation and excellence. Our continued engagement in our nationally recognized initiatives and programs highlights our commitment to diversity and inclusion. But this ongoing work will not be complete until every employee, every patient, every family member, every visitor feels safe, respected, welcome, comfortable, supported and accepted within our walls. Focused on equity we will serve, heal, educate and innovate.  Our job is to improve health and save lives, regardless of what our patients or colleagues look like, where they come from, what they believe, or who they love. Issues of equity and justice are not separate but rather intertwined with patient care, education, research, and community health. Targeting inequality enhances the quality of care for all. We believe in treating our patients and each other with the dignity that every human being deserves. Meeting up with new friends at Gather Here in Cambridge, MA for knit night. Bathing suits that fit from Athleta. Rash guard love. Pacifica (long sleeved version) Not so happy- water in our well is low because of the summer drought. On a Happy Note I went to see Vertical Horizon’s free concert in the Boston Common with Lisa, and her son and daughter. Really fun night. It was hot but the show was great, forgot how much I loved their music. And we knit! Aila and Will slept over the weekend of the 16-17th so parents can finish some renovation work at their house. Pool day Sat and Sunday! Sunday afternoon went to a cookout at my Nana’s assisted living facility. Knit and listened to the music. Fun! Knitting definitely helped what could have been an otherwise boring function. Aila left Giraffe Mommy- her prized possession- at our house. I came home and found her. Told Kris I’d send lots of photos of GM and me having fun so A would know she was ok. Dinner, showers, reading, made her a tent to sleep in, snuggles, riding the train, going to work. set up her own little office. Went to the craft store and then taught her to crochet so she could make a dress. Aila called Monday night when she got back from a trip with her grandmother, sad about it. Told me all of Giraffe Mommy's favorite things so I’d know. Very sweet. Brought her back on Tuesday. Wednesday night I went to Will and Aila’s track meet where we did a mini birthday celebration for Will before they left for vacation. I gave him the Rhino I had intended for Christmas! Finally scored a sock blank from Andre Sue Knits on Etsy Mom found a photo of a dress she made when she was in her early 20's that she wore to her Bridal Shower. At first we thought the yarn was a laceweight until we unwound the skein a bit and understood the unique concept.  Debi takes strands of different yarns and winds them together.  It's like knitting with two strands held together, except she does the work for you and winds them up together in any combination you like!  And you can pick from many colors and bases to get the perfect customized yarn for your project.  She has price information and more on her website, which we linked above.  You can also join her Ravelry group HERE.Gossip & Innuendo:Fiber EventsConnecticut Sheep and Wool Apr 30, Tolland Agricultural Center, Vernon/Rockville, CTGore Place Sheep Shearing Festival Apr 30, Gore Place, Waltham MAMaryland Sheep and Wool May 7-8, Howard County Fairgrounds, West Friendship, MDNew Hampshire Sheep and Wool May 14-15, Deerfield Fairgrounds, Deerfield, NHRhode Island Wool and Fiber Festival May 16, Coggeshall Farm Museum, Bristol, RIWebs Annual Tent Sale May 14-15, Webs, Northampton, MAMassachusetts Sheep and Woolcraft Fair May 28-29, Cummington Fairgrounds, Cummington, MAMaine Fiber Frolic Jun 6-7, Windsor Fairgrounds, Windsor, MEFiber Revival TBAFinger Lakes Fiber Festival Sep 17-18, Hemlock Fairgrounds, Hemlock MESouthern Adirondack Fiber Festival Sep 24-25, Washington County Fairgrounds, Greenwich, NYVermont Sheep and Wool Festival Oct 1-2, Tunbridge Fairgrounds, Tunbridge, VTNew York Sheep and Wool Oct 15-16, Dutchess County Fairgrounds, Rhinebeck, NYFiber Festival of New England Nov 5-6, Eastern States Exhibition, Springfield, MA
