It's a review of my weekend in Rhinebeck for the New York Sheep and Wool Festival and A Woolen Affair. I talk about what I wore, where I shopped, and all the goodness of a fiber festival at peak leaf peeping in New York State. Plus, a life-changing loaf of bread, my clog obsession, and a poem to celebrate the season.

What do you get when a crafter who loves colorful hand-dyed yarns (and hates stalking shop updates) crosses paths with a fresh, new yarn producer? Like many of her knitter friends in 2013, Lisa Chamoff was enchanted by the artful and expressive work of the independent dyers whose skeins were cropping up around the yarn world. Shoppers found new favorites by word of mouth, hearing about a new colorway or restock here and there. At the same time, talented dyers with fledgling businesses relied on that word of mouth to sell a few skeins at a time. Lisa saw an opportunity for a new kind of website: a marketplace where shoppers and dyers could come together to share new work. Indie Untangled opened for discovery. After a few months of the online marketplace, Lisa realized that the hand-dyed-yarn fans who visit her site wanted more than just two days at the annual New York Sheep and Wool Festival (“Rhinebeck”). Gathering on the Friday before the larger festival, a group of crafters were interested in extending the weekend's shopping and social opportunities. There was also an opportunity for smaller and newer yarn companies, who didn't have booths at the larger show, to introduce themselves to an audience eager for the next new thing. Beginning with just a few booths, the Indie Untangled event is now an anchor of the New York Sheep and Wool Festival weekend, drawing a few dozen vendors and offering timed shopping opportunities. Although most of Indie Untangled's offerings connect shoppers and dyers directly, Lisa also collaborates with dyers and yarn producers for Indie Untangled-exclusive projects, beginning with the Knitting Our National Parks Collection. NYSBA's 120th President (2017-18), Sharon Stern Gerstman joins Sarah and Michael to talk about her path to law, how the card game, bridge, is responsible for meeting her husband and how quitting smoking led her to take up knitting. Gerstman, counsel at Magavern Magavern Grimm in Buffalo, recalls how her mother knew she was destined to be a lawyer at the age of 5, how a lack of maternity leave policy at a tax firm resulted in her taking a position with the New York Supreme Court in the Eighth Judicial District, where she stayed for 30 years. Finally, Gerstman discusses her unique hobby of knitting and how that has led her to knitting seminars, festivals, and competitions, like the New York Sheep and Wool Festival, 'Sock Madness,' 'Tour de Sock,' and 'The Canadian Crazy Train.' Wear your knits. Tip: pick your hand knits first. Choose the rest of your outfit accordingly! Shoes should be comfy (and not new). Something you won't mind if they get covered in muck. Bag/purse- try not to make it too big. Camera- capture the fun. For me, iPhone is great. Pen + paper- in case you see a pattern you want to jot down name of etc. If you're a digital person you could take photos and jot them down later. Check out vendor list in advance. Make list of MUST go to vendors and where they are located. Make list of what you'd like to buy yarn for. Put list of what you need on phone/paper (something that doesn't require internet) cell service is getting better but can still be spotty. Bring snacks/water. Aim to eat at non-traditional times. Everyone wants to get lunch at 12 or 1. It's hard to do when you just want to shop and see and chat. I recommend setting timers on your phone if you're the type who can get lost in the day. Bing a mix of cash and card if possible. Food vendors sometimes only take cash Some booths line for cash and one for cards. if have both- you can pick shorter line. Don't pack too much knitting. Simple sock etc. bring extra sock needle or hat needle. You may want to cast on right  away! Many things at the really packed booths at Rhinebeck DO SELL OUT. Some vendors bring stock for Sunday. Some don't. Many people like to do a loop before committing to things but if there's only a couple and you're going to majorly regret it if its gone later. Consider buying it on the first pass. On a Happy Note I went to see Vertical Horizon’s free concert in the Boston Common with Lisa, and her son and daughter. Really fun night. It was hot but the show was great, forgot how much I loved their music. And we knit! Aila and Will slept over the weekend of the 16-17th so parents can finish some renovation work at their house. Pool day Sat and Sunday! Sunday afternoon went to a cookout at my Nana’s assisted living facility. Knit and listened to the music. Fun! Knitting definitely helped what could have been an otherwise boring function. Aila left Giraffe Mommy- her prized possession- at our house. I came home and found her. Told Kris I’d send lots of photos of GM and me having fun so A would know she was ok. Dinner, showers, reading, made her a tent to sleep in, snuggles, riding the train, going to work. set up her own little office. Went to the craft store and then taught her to crochet so she could make a dress. Aila called Monday night when she got back from a trip with her grandmother, sad about it. Told me all of Giraffe Mommy's favorite things so I’d know. Very sweet. Brought her back on Tuesday. Wednesday night I went to Will and Aila’s track meet where we did a mini birthday celebration for Will before they left for vacation. I gave him the Rhino I had intended for Christmas! Finally scored a sock blank from Andre Sue Knits on Etsy Mom found a photo of a dress she made when she was in her early 20's that she wore to her Bridal Shower. She handed it down to me and its my favorite item of clothing! Gigi is working on her Origami Wrap Pullover. Jasmin talks about buttonbands, and picking up three stitches for every four rows when picking up stitches for a buttonband. Gigi is working on a few pairs of vanilla socks, out of Regia Galaxy. Jasmin is knitting a pair of socks for Andrew out of her Crown Mountain "Albatross" handspun. Gigi is working on a crocheted edging for pillowcases. Jasmin talks about the yarn swap at Purlescence, where she came away with a skein of sock yarn, and a sweater's worth of Brown Sheep NatureSpun (in Cranberry Fog).
