Parshas Ki Tisa: Rays of Light Parshas Ki Tisa recounts one of the most dramatic moments in the Torah: the sin of the Golden Calf, Moshe shattering the Luchos, and the revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy. Yet the Parsha ends with a striking image. When Moshe descends from Har Sinai with the second Luchos, rays of light shine from his face. The people are afraid to approach him, yet Moshe himself does not realize the light is coming from him. ✨ True greatness shines brightest when the person carrying it does not even see it.

When Hashem praised Moshe Rabbeinu for breaking the Luchos, it revealed a profound lesson about Torah. A mitzvah is about submission—doing Hashem's will whether we understand it or not. Torah, however, requires understanding. To truly fulfill the mitzvah of learning Torah, a person must engage fully, using the mind deeply and becoming united with the Torah, like the letters engraved into the Luchos which were one with the stone.Yet Torah is Divine wisdom, infinite and beyond human limits. Therefore, to connect to its essence we must also break our ego and develop humility. That is why we say in davening, “V'nafshi k'afar la'kol tihyeh,” only then asking Hashem to open our hearts to His Torah. This is symbolized by the Aron, which contained both the whole and the broken Luchos. A Jew must be fully engaged and intellectually present in Torah, yet at the same time humble and broken. Just as the Aron both took up space and yet measured as if it did not, the essence of the neshamah allows us to hold these opposites together—being whole and broken at the same time—and through that connect to Torah on its deepest level.לקו״ש כו-ג

A revelatory moment collapses into a dance floor, and that is where everything breaks. We revisit the Golden Calf not to retell a scandal but to ask a sharper question: why did Moses shatter the tablets? The answer many overlook—joy in the wrongdoing—turns a familiar story into a powerful framework for modern life, where guilt is suspect and numbness is often mistaken for peace. We walk through the Sforno's startling insight about the music and dancing around the calf and show how celebration can seal a moral fracture. Then we flip a common script: guilt is not the villain. When conscience stings after a lapse—missing a prayer, gossiping, flipping a switch on a sacred day—that pain is a sign that the inner compass still points somewhere real. To make the point vivid, we bring in a rare medical condition—congenital insensitivity to pain—as a metaphor: the absence of pain doesn't make you strong; it makes you unsafe. The same holds for the soul. Numbness invites harm; feeling prompts care. From there, we get practical. We break down a three-step move from remorse to repair: name the feeling without self-condemnation, translate it into a small, concrete action, and time-box the emotion so it catalyzes instead of paralyzing. We also offer a richer measure of spiritual growth: not only the joy you feel when you do right, but the honest ache when you fall short. That ache is not a verdict on your worth—it's proof of attachment to what matters.By the end, you'll have a clear, compassionate way to treat guilt as guidance, avoid the trap of toxic shame, and protect your integrity with simple guardrails and forward motion. No wallowing, no theatrics—just conscience doing its protective work, and you choosing the next right step.If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs a reframe on guilt, and leave a quick review with one insight you're taking into the week.Support the showJoin The Motivation Congregation WhatsApp community for daily motivational Torah content!------------------Check out our other Torah Podcasts and content! And this ascent is the only reason Hashem allowed such a descent to take place in the first place (as explained regarding the verse “an awesome pretext upon the sons of man”), and the same applies to the ascent that will take place very soon with the coming of Moshiach. This is why the entire parshah, including the undesirable part, is called Ki Sisa (“When you lift up…”). In connection with Aharon's passing the verse states, “And all the Jewish people wept for Aharon…” – “because Aharon would pursue peace and instill love between people in conflict” etc. The lesson is to “Be among the students of Aharon” etc.; all matters of spreading Yiddishkeit must be done with love – “loving the creatures,” and in this way one will succeed in “drawing them close to the Torah.” And then Aharon's Priestly Blessing (which he bestows upon the Jewish people with love) will be fulfilled.Sichah from farbrengen of Wednesday, parashas Ekev, 20 Menachem-Av 5738. This applies to men, women, and even children, and while everyone should do it in a manner appropriate to their own level, it should be done in such a way that today's shiur is greater than yesterday's, and similarly advancing from the shiur at the beginning of the day to the shiur in the middle of the day and at the end of the day. By advancing “from strength to strength” in all this, one will merit to “Go from strength to strength, to appear to Hashem in Tzion,” to the Kodesh Hakodoshim which contains the Aron with the first and second Luchos. Since we are within the days of tashlumin for Shavuos, even the first Luchos are in a state of completeness, and instead of breaking (shevirah), there will be “grain (shever) in Egypt” – the true sustenance that connects the body to the soul, the created being to the true Being, with the true and complete Redemption etc.Excerpt from sichah of Monday, parashas Behaalosecha, 11 Sivan 5750 – Yechidus Klallis For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=04-06-2025 לזכות הינדא לאה בת חי' שרה שתחי' וויינבוים ליום ההולדת שלה ביום א' דחג השבועותלשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות‏

Based on the halacha that “All slaughtered offerings that were slaughtered not for their own sake are valid… except for the sin-offering,” it turns out that the theme of closeness is most expressed in the sin-offering. Regarding the sin-offering we find the condition that the person must “return due to his own awareness” – meaning he must have a broken heart because of his sin. Being that all aspects of a korban (the wood, the Mizbeach, the animal itself, the Kohen offering it etc.) must be complete and without blemish, certainly the person for whom the sin-offering is offered must also be whole. Therefore, it follows that his broken heart is in fact what makes him whole. This explains the saying of our Rebbeim, “There is nothing as whole as a broken heart” (and this is also the special quality of the broken Luchos).Excerpt from sichah of 20 Menachem-Av 5725 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=03-04-2025

Ki Sisa, Chelek Chof Vov, page 248Whats good about being broken?Moshe broke the Luchos and Hashem said "yasher koach!" Hashem agreed with Moshe and praised him. The yidden served the eigel, Moshe saved the honor of the Torah, etc - this could make sense, but the Rebbe says - no! Its not enough! Moshe could have just hid the luchos (toss into the ocean :)) - why specifically break them? There is something praiseworthy of broken luchos. We see that Moshe was sad about it and Hashem comforted him - the second set of luchos came along with Torah She'baal Peh too! With more, expansion! The 2nd set was an upgrade! And Moshe was praised after the 2nd set was given. The broken luchos made space for something bigger.Breaking the luchos in front of the yidden, broke us open allowing us to be open to Hashem, open to a bigger, better, expanded future. So is being broken the way to go?NO! The secret of the luchos 1 & 2 - broken & whole - is where they were kept - together, in the Aron! The Aron had measurements, yet took no space - the holding of 2 opposites together. Just like we should bring the 2 opposites of broken luchos & whole luchos together. We each have an aron in our hearts and are empowered to live with these 2 aspects together: broken, allowing the space for Hashem in, and whole - being myself fully invested with all my strengths and full self (not a robot). And from the broken moments, we can grow and double and redouble accomplishments! "Why does Hashem break us?" We should have Moshiach NOW and then we can see the greatness of the journey!

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains (based on the Kedushas Levi) why the Aron containing the Luchos is mentioned twice and why the rods in the Aron were not allowed to be removed. The Luchos represent the essence of our relationship with Hashem. Sometimes our Yiddishkeit can feel disjointed. Mitzvos may feel like they stand alone, separate from our mission to be Davek to Hashem. The Aron must be portable, revealing the essence in every single Mitzvah.

May G-d return all the hostages in Gaza immediately.  The Parsha Perspective is in honor of the Refuah Shlema of HaRav Amitai Ben Shoshanna, Hinda Bas Udl and those who need to experience a speedy and complete recovery with G-d's help.     This week's Parsha Perspective is in loving memory of Edward Ben Efraim, Shlomo Ben Edward, and Yirachmiel Daniel Ben Gedalia. May their souls be uplifted and their memories a blessing. Click here to listen, watch and connect! Parshaperspective.com  Our Parsha begins with Moshe descending from Mt. Sinai with the second pair of Luchos. He gathered the Jewish nation to teach them the intricate laws of constructing the Mishkan.  We find out why the Jewish nation was assembled the day after Moshe Rabbeinu came down from Mt. Sinai. We learn the necessity of unity, especially in the face of adversity.

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains why the Luchos could be read from the inside and the outside. There are two ways of relating to Hashem. Outside Torah is scientific and mathematical. This was the Torah of Avraham Avinu. Inside Torah is discovered from within the relationship itself. We can and should discover Hashem not only from the outside but from within the words of Torah, at our Shabbos tables and in our community.

Therefore, it is specifically the second Luchos that endure forever. This is the connection to the days of Purim, when the Torah was accepted wholeheartedly by the Jewish people of their own accord – “they confirmed what they had already accepted.” The special quality of the second Luchos is also alluded to in the conclusion of the Torah, which states, “which Moshe performed before the eyes of the entire Jewish people.” As Rashi explains, this refers to the fact that “his heart moved him to break the Luchos before their eyes...Well done for breaking them.” It was specifically through breaking the Luchos that there became an abundance of Torah in the second Luchos – a “double portion of wisdom”: breaking the Luchos caused the Jewish people to have a broken heart, “Let my soul be like dust to all,” which made them fit for the “double portion of wisdom” – “Open my heart to Your Torah.” And all this happened through Moshe – “Hew for yourself.”Excerpt from sichah of Purim 5745 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=26-02-2024

In Parshat Yitro, we read about the revelation at Sinai and the giving of the 10 Commandments. The image of the 10 Commandments is one of the most familiar images from the Torah, but when you read the Sages' description of the tablets, not only will you be shocked to hear that we may have been depicting the image wrong all along, but we may also be missing an important part of what the 10 Commandments are all about.Join Ari Levisohn and Daniel Loewenstein as they explore the Sages' words and discuss the powerful implications of a new way to see the 10 Commandments. To hear Rabbi Fohrman's complete interview on the podcast excerpted in this week's episode, listen here. To learn more about the suzerain-vassal treaties Ari discusses, check out this article. To access the brand new season of Rabbi Fohrman's podcast, A Book Like No Other, click here to subscribe to Aleph Beta.
