Starknet is coming to Bitcoin with one of the biggest breakthroughs in Bitcoin scaling: STARK verifiers natively on Bitcoin. In a recent conversation with Eli Ben-Sasson from StarkWare, we got a closer look at how they're working to bring STARK verifiers to Bitcoin, something that hasn't been possible until now. Our discussion was centered around giving the Bitcoin network new capabilities, thanks to the potential reintroduction of OP__CAT, a simple but powerful opcode that will enable advanced computational functions on Bitcoin. Eli talked us through their exploration of integrating Bitcoin with Ethereum, envisioning a future where Starknet can settle transactions across both chains simultaneously. This could open up a new world of possibilities, allowing users to leverage the strengths of both ecosystems while choosing their preferred data availability layer on a transaction basis. Eli also touched on some of the broader implications of these developments. From the shifting political landscape around Bitcoin, with discussions about OP__CAT gaining traction, to the challenges of maintaining security and decentralization as the network grows more complex. We asked Eli about his broader vision of immutability at the base layer of Bitcoin and Ethereum vs. improving better technology. He talked deeply about the challenges ahead, from governance issues to the risk of centralization, as well as his and the entire Starknet community's commitment to building a more open and decentralized future. Eli emphasized that this is a journey that will take years, if not decades, to fully realize. This has been one of, if not the biggest breakthroughs in the ongoing Bitcoin scaling space race. We really enjoyed this conversation as it started off quite technical and ended up philosophical. The Rollup Website: https://therollup.co/ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1P6ZeYd.. Back in 2014, Eli Ben-Sasson co-authored the Zerocash paper, which proposed a ZK SNARK system that creates anonymous Bitcoin payments. Around the same time, he also spoke about the compression benefits of zero-knowledge proofs – a full Bitcoin node can be synced within seconds just by verifying against a valid proof. More recently, he became interested in STARKs and built a company around this cryptographic breakthrough. If SNARKs require a trusted setup, then STARKs are a major leap towards trust minimization. If Bitcoin activates the OP_CAT soft fork, then this ZK rollup scheme also becomes possible to enable great privacy and low-sized transactions.

Eli Ben-Sasson, co-founder and President of StarkWare, discusses his journey into Web3, building blockchain solutions for scalability, and how StarkWare is working on onboarding the next billion users onto the blockchain. StarkWare develops zero-knowledge proof technology that compresses information to address the blockchain's scalability problem. Before founding StarkWare, Eli was in core academia, earning his Ph.D. under Abel Prize winner Avi Wigderson and completing his postdoc from MIT and Harvard. His research focused on probabilistically checkable proofs (PCPs), and during the 2013 Bitcoin conference, he saw how his technology could address many of blockchain's issues. Today, StarkWare boasts three major technologies that significantly advance blockchain technology into the future. But Eli believes one of the biggest challenges will be to ensure that blockchain remains decentralized: “Whenever you have a system of great value, some parties will benefit from it, and they will want to increase their hold on it. The whole point of blockchain and Web3 is about resisting that or finding ways to distribute and broaden the influence of various corners of society on it. I don't know of a good solution today, but it's the biggest long-term challenge." We hope you enjoy Eli's conversation with hosts Kenzi wang, Sachi Kamiya, and Diksha Dutta where he talks in depth about the Stakware story, scaling blockchain with zero knowledge, and his founder journey in Web3.

Layer 2 zero knowledge roll-ups have initially been used for achieving private transactions on blockchains. However, past simple transfers, interacting with a public smart contract posed a serious challenge. As research and technology evolved, proof construction became much more efficient, enabling zk-powered scalability. There is a variety of pros and cons for each type of proof system, but given the impending rise of qunatum computers, we have witnessed a recent migration from SNARKs to STARKs. While the former relies on trusted setups, zk-STARKs are quantum-resistant.We were joined by Eli Ben-Sasson, co-founder of Starkware, to discuss Starknet's layer 2 architecture, as well as the upcoming update to Cairo 1.0 and how it will impact scalability performances for STARKs.Topics covered in this episode:Shifting from privacy to scalabilityZK roll-up taxonomy and main differences between SNARKs and STARKsWhy scalability is easier to implement than privacy solutionsConstructing proofs efficiently in CairoStarknet's layer 2 architectureBuilt-in account abstractionVolition, data availability and trust assumptionsSequencer decentralisation and crypto regulationsStorage proofsCairo upgrades & TPSCouncil-based vs. DAO governanceFuture developmentsEpisode links:Eli Ben-Sasson on TwitterStarknet on TwitterThis episode is hosted by Friederike Ernst. "FTX has been hacked. FTX apps are malware. Delete them. Chat is open. Don't go on FTX site as it might download Trojans." That message from an FTX administrator was pinned on its official Telegram channel by FTX General Counsel Ryne Miller on Friday, mere hours after the crypto exchange filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. CoinDesk initially reported “mysterious outflows exceeding $600 million.” CNN says it was just $473 million, the New York Times $515 million. Early on Monday, Binance founder and CEO Chanpgeng Zhao announced his company "is forming an industry recovery fund, to help projects who are otherwise strong, but in a liquidity crisis." Paul Guerra and co-host Santiago Velez, a co-founder and the R&D division lead at Block Digital, welcome CoinFund president Christopher Perkins – who was at Lehman Brothers when it collapsed in 2008 – and StarkWare co-founder and president Eli Ben-Sasson to assess the still-accumulating fallout from the FTX debacle and to chart potential paths forward.

This week on The Defiant Podcast we speak with Uri Kolodny and Eli Ben-Sasson, the co-founders of Starkware, one of the leading Layer 2 scaling solutions for Ethereum. Post Merge, Ethereum continues to rely on scaling solutions like Starkware and will continue to do so, according to the network's long-term roadmap. Visa processes 1700 transactions per second, and that number is often quoted as the Holy Grail for a blockchain to become a viable settlement layer for finance. They explain how that can be achieved with the help of Starkware. In the early stages of building Starkware, Uri and Eli had decided not to launch a token. After two years of running Starkware and StarkNet being in alpha, is a STARK token on the horizon? Currently, Starkware is solely used for scaling Ethereum. We talk about Uri and Eli's plans to expand Starkware's services to other Layer 1s. Finally, we discuss the future of scaling solutions, decentralized applications, DeFi, NFTs, and more.

Fresh off the heels of a $50M Series C round last November, StarkWare Industries closed a $100M Series D round on Wednesday, giving the Israeli-based startup a valuation of $8 billion. The fundraise was led by Greenoaks Capital and Coatue, and included Tiger Global amongst others. StarkWare aims to bring efficient, affordable blockchain transactions to the masses through its ZK-rollup technology, which addresses blockchain congestion by compressing multiple transactions into ‘STARK proofs' that are then passed on to the underlying blockchain. In this episode of The Scoop, StarkWare co-founders Eli Ben-Sasson and Uri Kolodny sit down with host Frank Chaparro to discuss what their firm has been building, and how their technology will allow blockchains to scale. According to Kolodny, the trustless computational integrity enabled by StarkWare technology will be very useful to society: “It delivers something that is dearly missing and dearly needed in modern societies and the way they're doing their computation. That is something very simple: it is integrity — the ability to know that something was done the right way, even when you weren't watching.” Despite bearish sentiment across markets, StarkWare's recent fundraise shows VCs are excited about the opportunities unlocked through StarkWare's scaling technology, and are willing to continue providing the developer with capital. StarkWare's two products, StarkEx and StarkNet, both serve as Ethereum scaling solutions, with the former being "scaling as a service," while the latter is permissionless. StarkNet completed its launch earlier this year, allowing any developer to integrate the platform into their application. ... And keep in mind, nothing in this show should ever be considered financial advice. Greater than 50% of Americans think crypto will be the future of finance. That's according to a poll conducted by StarkWare. 53%, actually. Not surprising that it's more the younger folks that think so. 68% of people between 25 and 34 believe in this concept. This was a poll of 2000 American adults. For adults 34 to 44, 61% feel like crypto is the future. Also, 17% of participants admit they have invested in crypto. 82% of those said they have at least one crypto tracker on their phone. Half say they fiddle or amend their positions daily. Only 14% of the responding investors let their portfolio sit a week at a time without making changes to it. Eli Ben Sasson is Cofounder and President of StarkWare He said quote This poll shows how widespread crypto has become while indicating just how huge it will soon become. We see that young Americans, those who will soon shape the economy, are especially turned into crypto. In this episode, I had the opportunity to sit down with Eli Ben-Sasson of Starkware. If you listened to my last episode with Su where we talked about the scaling approaches of different L1s blockchains compared to Ethereum, I argued that L1 blockchains do not scale and that the only way to create true scalability is to perform all of the computation off-chain and only post the results of that computation on-chain. STARKs are a technology that allows huge amounts of computation to be compressed into succinct proofs that anyone can easily verify. Our goal for this episode was to create the most approachable and comprehensive audio resource on how STARKs work and how they will scale blockchains in the future. We start by explaining inclusive accountability and the true meaning of scalability. Then we dive into STARKs, how proof systems work in general, and where they fit into the context of unbundling blockchains. Next, we use DYDX as a comprehensive case study to learn about the StarkEx system, before diving into StarkNet and its tradeoffs to StarkEx. Finally, we talk about StarkWare's programming language Cairo and how the different costs of proving, verifying, and storage are going to scale into the future. If you're a developer, you should also gain a very good idea of the tradeoffs between building on a regular L1 blockchain, the general-purpose StarkNet blockchain, and a StarkEx application-specific chain. Enjoy! Listen to conversations between Su Zhu, the CEO and CIO of Three Arrows Capital, and Hasu, an experienced crypto researcher and writer. Together with occasional guests, we explore the transformative nature of trust-minimized currency and financial services. Establishing trust between people and institutions is extremely important. But there are pitfalls to the current methods we all use to establish trust. Many people lack trust in huge centralized systems given their size, subsequent power, and lack of transparency. On the other hand, decentralized systems with democratizing ideas intended to build trust are often difficult to execute at scale, especially at the pace required to keep up with technological acceleration. On this episode of Future of Tech, Eli Ben Sasson (@elibensasson), Co-Founder, President & Chairman of the Board at StarkWare (@starkwareltd), discusses his alternative approach, which involves using math in order to build trust. A math proof, he explains, can offer broad verification across a great amount of data between parties by checking the computation at specific points. In layman's terms, that means the issue of scalability is solved while also reducing cost. And these zero-knowledge proofs also provide the added benefit of privacy since there is no information shared about any of the parties involved beyond the computation. Most importantly, since the math is objective, correct, and verifiable trust among all parties increases. So what does this all mean for the future of trust in business and tech? Find out on this episode! Main Takeaways: Magical Math: Math proofs are magical because a computation checked only in certain places can verify that an overall relationship, potentially including many parties, is working as intended. This allows for a tremendous amount of transactions at great speed while also providing verifiable certainty that everything is functioning according to plan. Zero-Knowledge is Good: Zero-Knowledge may sound bad to the layperson but it's really an under-valued solution to major problems. The zero-knowledge proof gives certainty in the computation by only analyzing particular points in a system. As an added benefit, It offers no additional information about any entity involved in the computation. This ensures certainty and privacy. Theoretical Beauty Meets Practicality: The theoretical world can be intellectually stimulating. Doing work that has tangible real-world results is also meaningful. In one's work, connecting the theoretical with practical applications can provide deep satisfaction. Making Meaning via Passion and Optimism: Passion is when someone does what is most meaningful to them. Optimism allows a person to stretch and try something new despite the potential for failure. In fact, optimism increases one's chances of finding a solution to a problem. Both passion and optimism play vital roles in creating new meaning for the individual and, potentially, for the world. --- Future of Tech is brought to you by Amdocs Tech. In this week’s episode, Anna (https://twitter.com/AnnaRRose) has a one-on-one chat with Alex Ozdemir, a PhD student at Stanford researching formal methods, cryptography and distributed systems. Alex’s work is closely tied to the world of generalized computations within zero knowledge systems. He is one of the main developers of CirC, an infrastructure framework for building zero knowledge languages. In their conversation, Alex and Anna take a bird’s eye view of the current landscape of zk languages and libraries. Alex explains the history and current state-of-the-art of circuit-building tools, touching on libraries like Libsnark, Bellman and more comprehensive tools like Arkworks; hardware description languages like Circom; and the more dev-friendly family of RAM-register languages like ZoKrates, Pequin, Cairo, Leo and many more. Here, the race is still on as a number of academic and business-oriented teams grapple with limitations to memory access & performance given by zero knowledge proving systems. Zero-Knowledge proofs have broadened the realm of use cases for applied cryptography over the past decade, from privacy-enhanced cryptocurrencies to applications in voting, finance, protecting medical data and more. In 2018, Dr. Eli Ben-Sasson and his team introduced ZK-STARKs, a new zero-knowledge construction that functions without trusted setup, thereby broadening what zero-knowledge systems are capable of. We’ll talk about ZK-STARKs and more with Eli in this episode of Cryptography FM. Host Tom Shaughnessy talks to Uri Kolodny and Eli Ben Sasson of StarkWare, and Will Harborne from DeversiFi. They discuss the pros and cons of centralized and decentralized exchanges, the development of Layer 2 technologies, scalability, and more. Episode Highlights: StarkWare is an Israeli startup that develops proof systems for scalability, security, and permissions for blockchain. DeversiFi is a decentralized exchange that allows people to connect to any Ethereum wallet and can reach up to 9,000 TPS. DeversiFi is now working to scale up beyond Ethereum to its own centralized exchange, and is using StarkWare technology to do that. The biggest benefit of having all the benefits of a decentralized exchange operating on a centralized exchange is a higher number of trades per second. Starks are a type of zero-knowledge proof system with extreme scalability and transparency that rely on a lot of complex mathematics behind the scenes. What this technology results in is essentially a receipt for your transaction, a guarantee that your trade was handled correctly and that there was computational integrity. There are differences between Snarks and Starks—Starks have no trusted setup and have post-quantum security. When you want to scale, you don’t want a trusted setup limiting you to generating new sets of keys but allows you to operate more universally. It’s a plausible security threat that eventually hackers will be able to breach coins and blockchains that are not post-quantum secured. Adding zero-knowledge to the settlement process doesn’t automatically give you privacy, so they’re working on boosting those privacy demands. Pure centralized exchange technology is rapidly becoming a commodity, including cloud-based services. They are starting to look at non-fungible tokens. Key Points: In terms of scalability, the next step is to have all the security benefits of a decentralized exchange with the speed of a centralized exchange. Centralized exchanges will always be needed for simple retail exchanges. This partnership is one of the first Layer 2 scaling technologies being used to power an existing business model. Tweetable Quotes “We all believe that this technology of zero-knowledge proofs is going to be used someday by even the most powerful of monopolies or governments to attest to the citizens that everything has been done with computational integrity.” –Eli Ben Sasson “I think the fiat on-ramp is naturally the hardest thing to decentralize if it can be at all.” –Will “Our scalability can basically be considered a means of saving the application gas cost on Ethereum and allowing it to scale essentially indefinitely. Think of us as a compression service.” –Uri Kolodny Support The Show ZenLedger is the official tax software of Chain Reaction for crypto investors and accountants. A great episode with Eli and Uri from Starkware! This is a special project focusing on cryptographic proofs using zero-knowledge, succinct, transparent and post-quantum secure processes. We had a really interesting conversation about zk's -- furthering helping listeners understand their impact. We also discussed quantum -- in light of Google's recent announcement - the cause and effect of quantum on encryption in blockchains. Lastly we discussed StarkPay vs Lightning. Must listen!

This past year, we have witnessed what some are calling a “Cambrian Explosion” in zero-knowledge proof systems. New proof systems based on a variety of cryptographic assumptions are popping up every week. And while zero-knowledge systems are known for their privacy-preserving characteristics, they have proven particularly useful for scaling blockchains through off-chain computations. We're joined by Eli Ben Sasson, Co-founder and Cheif Scientist in the East at Starkware. His company is developing a full proof-stack, which leverages STARKs. Pioneered by Eli, STARKs are zero-knowledge cryptographic proofs, which are succinct, transparent, and post-quantum secure. StarkWare has demonstrated how zkSTARKs may be leveraged to provide off-chain scalability by generating proofs of computational integrity which may be verified on-chain.Topics covered in this episode:Eli's trajectory and transition from academia to the startup worldThe origin story of Starkware and the founding teamThe current explosion of zero-knowledge proof researchAn overview of zero-knowledge proof systems and how they workWhat are STARKs and what are their propertiesHow STARKs are different from SNARKs and BulletproofsWhat are zk-Rollups and how they are used by StarkWare to achieve scalabilityThe StarkDEX experiment and scalability benefits it had demonstratedThe issue of data availability with layer-2 scaling solutionsStarkWare's business model and the solutions they are building for customersEpisode links: StarkWareStarkWare resourcesStarkWare blogStarkWare TwitterStarkWare Sessions conference videosEpicenter Podcast SFBW Week MeetupDeFi Hackathon sponsored by CosmosSF Blockchain Week 2019 (use the code EPICENTER for 20% off tickets)Macro.WTFSponsors: Vaultoro: Trade gold to Bitcoin instantly and securely starting at just 1mg - http://vaultoro.comB9Lab: Level up and become a Solidity smart contract auditor – 5% off the with the code EPICENTER - https://solidified.b9lab.com/epicenterThis episode is hosted by Sebastien Couture & Sunny Aggarwal. In this week's episode, we catch up with Eli Ben-Sasson and Alessandro Chiesa from StarkWare Industries (https://www.starkware.co/). We talk about their longstanding academic work in theoretic & applied cryptography, how StarkWare came to be, the emergence of zkSNARKs and zkSTARKs, some of the differences between these different zero knowledge systems, dive into the specific features of STARKs (!) and what's coming next in the space. Zero Knowledge Proofs are methods of providing cryptographic proofs to another party while keeping some information secret. The simple concept of ZKP offer tantalizing possibilities: Banks could prove solvency without revealing depositors. Governments could prove the fairness of an election without compromising privacy. Computer science professor Eli Ben-Sasson joined us to discuss where blockchains and cryptocurrencies intersect with Zero Knowledge Proofs and related technologies such as zkSNARKs. It offered a fascinating view into what will surely become a core part of blockchain tech in the future. Topics covered in this episode: What are proof systems? Zero Knowledge Proofs (ZKP) and other terminology such as SNARKs and zkSNARKs The mechanics of Zero Knowledge Proofs The role of performance in Zero Knowledge Proofs Applications of ZKPs The widespread potential impact of ZKP to verify processes Episode links: Eli Ben-Sasson's Website SNARKs for C talk by Madars Virza Stackexchange: What are SNARKs SNARKs for C paper [PDF] Zerocash Talk This episode is hosted by Brian Fabian Crain and Meher Roy.
