After years of neglect in the public debate, agriculture has become a hot topic at the EU level in the past year, with issues like food inflation, farmers' protests, and climate change impact on crops.Consequently, agriculture features heavily in the electoral manifestos and campaigns of many political parties ahead of June's EU elections. I'm joined by our Agrifood reporter, Sofia Sanchez Manzanaro, to discuss this.
As Spaniards get ready to elect 61 MEPs to the European Parliament in the June 9 elections, regional elections in Spain are sucking much of the political oxygen. The pro-independence EH Bildu coalition celebrated a historic result in the Basque vote on April 20. Many eyes are now turned to the Catalan regional election on May 12, while the Spanish government works on a controversial amnesty law for those involved in the failed 2017 secession attempt in Catalonia. We discuss how these issues are impacting the national conversation, as well as touching on the EU campaign themes in Spain – including the cost of living, healthcare and migration.
With slightly more than a month to go till the European parliamentary elections, surveyors from our polling partner Europe Elects, are focusing on the performance of the political groups, the seats they may get in the parliament, and what are the main concerns of EU citizens. With anticipation of a higher voter turnout than in previous years, according to the last Eurobarometer before the elections, EU citizens appear more aware and engaged than ever with EU affairs. To get a better understanding of the new data from our polling partner, Europe Elects, with us is Max Griera, Euractiv's network journalist.

It's Tuesday's episode of Triggered! The guys hope you all had a relaxing Memorial Day weekend, and are back in the studio to talk the latest news of the day. Democrats are freaking out now that President Trump has given Attorney General William Barr "full and complete" authority to declassify documents related to the spying of the Trump 2016 presidential campaign. In another blow to Globalists in Europe, right-wing populists gained seats in the European Union. Is this a sign that Trump will win in 2020? If this isn't, there may be some other signs, as New York Times columnists are signaling the POTUS may get another four years.

Tuesday 28th May 2019 The EU elections didn’t see a groundswell of support for the far right, but as NAB’s Rodrigo Catril discusses with Phil Dobbie, there are repercussions being felt across the continent. For example, the Greek PM is calling for a general election, and the UK Tory and Labour parties are doing a lot of soul searching on how to recover from an historic defeat. But the shift in the makeup of the EU parliament could see a rethink of how the bloc deals with problem economies, like Italy. They also discuss the latest on the US–China trade dispute, with President Trump saying he is not ready to make a deal. More bravado?
There's never a shortage of great marketing and brand-related stories. But we really hit the jackpot the last little while. So I went on the air with Mark Brennae of CFAX to talk about it. First, what's up with Drake? Is he the new Toronto Raptors mascot, or a genius marketer? If you haven't been paying attention, the rapper is front and centre at Raptors games, and his visibility has gone through the roof during the playoffs. How much exposure is too much? Which brand benefits, and which brand pays? It's all in the first half of my show with Mark. Second, the EU election happened yesterday, and the results were certainly not what populists were expecting. But had anyone really paid attention to the complex worldviews of euro-constituents, the rise of the Greens may have made perfect sense. Worldview thinking is something we marketers do as a matter of course. I talk about it during the second half of my show with Mark. Did you enjoy this show? Do me a huge favour and spread the love with the social media buttons onscreen. Truly appreciate it. Oh, and if you'd like more brand and marketing content from me, subscribe to my newsletter!

EU Election calls with Change UK and the Brexit party
As the EU Election clock ticks remorselessly down to zero we’re joined by the New Statesman’s political editor STEPHEN BUSH to survey the campaign so far and predict the upshot. What will Labour’s “all things to everyone” stance to do its vote? How do we fight the Brexit Party’s “all rage, no content’’ politics? Just how screwed are the Conservatives? Why a Farage victory might be a good thing for Remain. And we (try to) answer the only question that matters: who should Remainers vote for? PLUS Why the media’s middle class cringe gets Leave politicians off the hook. A first-ever Brexit football analogy for Remainiacs (plus some shocking anti-Spurs bias) from grieving Arsenal fanatic Stephen Bush. How CHUK failed to a make even a first impression. And why are we ignoring Clarabell who runs a recycling centre in Brighton?“First you create the humiliation. Then you just seed that humiliation and benefit from it. New Centrist Party Change UK - The Independent Group have launched their election campaign for the European Parliament. It's not going great with candidates suspended and marketing blunders galore. Hosted by James Fox w/ Alex Maskill
Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael candidates running for the European Parliament elections in Dublin have discussed a potential vote pact ahead of polls opening in May. On Independent.ie's Floating Voter podcast, Fianna Fáil candidate Barry Andrews says he would be open to a vote pact with former SDLP leader Mark Durkan who is running for Fine Gael. “We'd be open to it if Mark is willing to offer it,” Mr Andrews says. The former minister of State's comments follows Fianna Fáil and the SDLP announcing an all Ireland policy partnership. Mr Durkan did not rule out a vote pact with Mr Andrews but similarly did not say he would open to the offer now that he is running for Fine Gael. Separately, Mr Andrews defends his record as GOAL chief executive and explains why he is going before the electorate again after the hammering he got in the 2011 General Election. Mr Andrews says “a lot has changed” since he left politics and insists he had built up a “bank of experience” after the devastating election for Fianna Fail during the financial crash. Meanwhile, Mr Durkan, who has recently joined Fine Gael, defends his decision to run in the Dublin rather than Northern Ireland now that UK is set to contest the EU elections. The Derry man says he wants to run in Dublin so he can represent citizens across the entire island of Ireland and protect the Good Friday Agreement. He says candidates running in the North may have to contest on a “time limited” and “scope limited” mandate. Mr Durkan also attempts to name the main characters from the hit comedy show The Derry Girls, while Mr Andrews is quizzed on his knowledge of Dublin GAA.
Welcome to the first episode of our new mini-series on women, power and the EU election — a fortnightly spin-off podcast from POLITICO's EU Confidential. Our timing for episode one could hardly be better. EU leaders like Manfred Weber, Frans Timmermans and Margrethe Vestager are clamoring to demand gender parity in EU institutions. In this episode, POLITICO's Lili Bayer speaks with Belgian MEP Maria Arena about the current status of women in politics. At the rate we're going, it would take 107 years to overcome the gap in women’s political representation worldwide. And the situation in Europe isn't much better. We also hear a debate between some of Europe's youngest aspiring female election candidates, including Svenja Hahn, liberal MEP candidate from Germany, Tuulia Pitkänen, socialist MEP candidate from Finland, and Ana Lidia Pereira, who was selected as an MEP candidate this week for her center-right party in Portugal. Look out for our next next episode in a couple of weeks, when we'll feature women who are shaking up Irish politics.
Happy new years you gorgeous souls, on this weeks episode we talk about the upcoming EU Election. And When did Panic! At the Disco become audibly indistinguishable from Maroon 5?! Show Notes: New Year Spectacular Voting is what now? The election is happening in May between the 23rd and 26th. It varies from country to country, but they all use some form of proportional representation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elections_to_the_European_Parliament#Voting_system). Some have national party-lists (which are garbage) and some have big constituencies (Like Ireland, Belgium). Some countries use STV instead of party lists (Like Ireland and Malta). Germany, Italy and Poland use what appears to me to be an intentionally complicated system... Spitzenkandidat? Europe Elects has a well updated list of candidates (https://europeelects.eu/2019spitzenkandidaten/). A party's candidate matters in a similar way to a prime minister candidate, but local politics will be more important in most countries. National parties do campaigning under their own banner usually, not the grouping they fall into in the EU parliament, the effect will vary county to country. Also there's still the looming possibility the Spitzenkandidat of the largest EU party doesn't actually get the commission president job anyway. The Council in theory puts forward commission presidents to the parliament, who have a veto. "Ground Breaking" Outreach The parliament has launched a website (https://what-europe-does-for-me.eu/) to explain why the EU is so cool. For instance if you're someone who "likes shopping online" the EU is totally for you - https://what-europe-does-for-me.eu/en/portal/2/G04 ... Yes this will create an improved voter turnout. The 2014 election had only a turnout of 163,551,013 (42.54%) "Polls are always wrong anyway" There a three great aggregators of polls: https://europeanelectionsstats.eu/ They have a good seat projection based on a combination of national polls and PollofPolls.eu. They also put parties into general buckets of far right, left and moderate https://pollofpolls.eu/EU which has some trend lines based on national polling. They handily show major events on their graphs to explain changes. Along with that they provide analysis Europe Elects (https://europeelects.eu/ep2019/) some nice seat projections based on similar data sources. Their maps are great showing EU party projections by country. General outcome: ALDE up Far right would be up if they all grouped together... but they don't like each other sometimes. S&D will take a hit from losing Labour and not replacing it EPP could see a hit but will almost certainly still "win" the election and probably be in a good place to put Weber up for President of the Commission The polls underestimated the EPP and ALDE in the last election by quite a bit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_European_Parliament_election Macron Who Now? His current popularity means they might get very few MEPs.. so Macron's agenda will probably go nowhere? It depends, if ALDE end up as part of the ruling coalition it might be because of his support - but really anything could happen. En Marche may be a toxic association by May at this rate Don't forget the B word I guess Brexit could just not happen... who knows... that'd really ruin all the hard work people have put into seat projections ##Parties are actually called Groupings but the effective difference is...something Here are the links to each "party" mentioned http://www.guengl.eu/ https://www.greens-efa.eu/en/ https://www.socialistsanddemocrats.eu/ https://alde.eu/en/ https://www.eppgroup.eu/ https://www.ecrgroup.eu/ http://www.efddgroup.eu/ https://www.enfgroup-ep.eu/ ##Things you can do Vote, I mean, yeah. Talk about the election with friends and families Talk to non-native EU-immigrant friends, make sure they know they can vote and how to do so, help them with translations and government bureaucracy if they have trouble with the local language. Do your research and join and volunteer with a national party you support
