Liberty to Cider – with Elisha Mason We take an apple-tinted journey into the past with our guest this week, Elisha Mason, @museumofcider Archives and Collections Officer. Leading us into the mysterious (and, apparently, heavily haunted) archives and cellars of the magnificent Museum of Cider in Hereford, Elisha talks us through British Cider Riots, and how they inspired revolution in America, dream teapots and finding an unexpected foot in a box (different museum…) Continuing to answer the big questions we ponder who would be the best starship captain amongst historical pomologists and orchardists, ask what an ingenio is and string out the great Cider Voice debate: Bulmer's Norman vs Thorn Pear. Also, is Adam secretly the Scrooge of Wassailing (and can he even pronounce it?) We loved recording this episode with Elisha. They discussed Innovation and planning for the future, strategies for more efficient transport around technology and localised approaches. The need for incremental progress and the role of private sector involvement were also discussed to help, for example, the ability for an authority to make the most out of the data it has. "It's how you use that data, how you present that data," Mr Pickworth explains. "Is it presented in a way that enables decisions to be made?"Ms Claytonsmith added that support for authorities is vital. "I spoke to [one] who says they've literally got 20 or 30 different systems, each holding different sets of data, not communicating. And I think now that we're in a much more complex environment, the fact that we don't have as many people in our teams... So actually having an integrated system that allows you to make complex decisions drawing in different data becomes ever more important."You'll hear more on this fascinating discussion, recorded in a rather echoey hotel conference room, which also covers infrastructure obsolescence and funding priorities as well as risk taking, innovation, challenges and priorities.

British troops could be deployed on the ground in Gaza to help deliver aid via a new sea route. The US has said no American forces would go ashore from a floating pontoon – a “third party” will drive trucks along a causeway onto the beach. Britain has been closely involved in planning the sea-bourne aid operation.  Europe correspondent Gavin Grey tells Mike Hosking the task is risky due to the accidental killings of aid workers by Israel Defence Forces.  Meanwhile, the UK's largest cider maker has chopped down a huge orchard, sparking fears for wildlife.   Lower demand for cider meant Bulmer's Cider, owned by Heineken, had an excess of apples and uprooted thousands of trees.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After we put together our tribute episode in memory of Former Canadian Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney, that had included a short tribute honoring my Step Father, Larry Bulmer, I thought about the World Heritage site I had visited and Larry talked about in the short segment I used in the show. I figured most people probably know nothing about the Buffalo Jump nor the World Heritage site in Alberta , known as Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump History Center.  I figured here is a chance to tell that story and a couple of more I learned while traveling across Canada in 1996 with my Step-father and Mother.  It was one of two trips I consider the trips of a lifetime, Western Canada and , our earlier covered, trip to the Florida Keys. While it is impossible to really recreate a vacation from nearly 30 years ago, I thought I would highlight a couple of things we visited that really stood out. In this episode we will take you to the Canadian Province of Alberta, to visit the Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump History Center, the tiny Mountain mining town of Frank, where one of Canada's most well known disasters took place when a Rockslide consumed the tiny town in 1903, and we will look back at the building of the Canadian Pacific Railroad, the cross country railroad that really brought unity to the nation. My Step-Father grew up around railroads because his father was a Railroad station manager in several towns along the line and because of that Larry  was always "a lover of all things trains". So, I hope you will enjoy this short trip across Canada, the only other country I have grown to love, and consider as sort of a second home. BRIAN MULRONEY, A TRIBUTE to Our Great Friend and to Canada (Special Edition featuring my stepfather Larry Bulmer)

Brian Mulroney was a great friend to American Presidents, and one of the big four leaders who helped bring down Communism in the 1980s. He helped George Bush in the Gulf War and was the leader who pushed for the freeing of Nelson Mandela in South Africa. He was a man who played an outsized role in his times as the leader of our great northern neighbor. Brian Mulroney died on February 29, 2024. In his Obituary The New York Times wrote of him: " Mr. Mulroney was known as the Canadian leader who led the country into the North American Free Trade Agreement, with the United States and Mexico, a pact signed in December 1992, and as the author of an overhaul of Canada's tax regime.... He prided himself on being a confidant of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush; on promoting a thaw between Moscow and Washington in the closing days of the Cold War; and on going much further than either the United States or Britain in imposing sanctions against white-ruled South Africa to press for the release of Nelson Mandela and the dismantling of apartheid." “I am a centrist, a modern one open to all discussions,” Mr. Mulroney said during the 1984 campaign.  Mr. Mulroney proposed a goods-and-services tax,  he successfully negotiated the NAFTA accord, and tried but failed to bring about a national unity with Quebec and get them to sign on to the country's constitution.  That failure would eventually lead to splits in his own Conservative Party and his resignation and their total wipe out in the election just after he left office. In this episode we look back at the life and leadership of Brian Mulroney, and listen to perhaps the speeches that are today how most Americans remember him. The great friend of Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher , George H. W. Bush, and his Queen, Elizabeth 2.  He gave the eulogies to three of them, and spoke on television during the period of mourning for Prime Minister Thatcher, this episode will feature those speeches and one of the interviews, plus we will hear from Canadian leaders, the Canadian news coverage of his passing, and an interview with the man himself on the George Stroumboulopoulos Show. As we bid farewell to this great friend of the United States.  Our host will also pay tribute to his own Step-Father, Charles "Larry " Bulmer, who was a member of the Canadian Air Force for 35 years and then worked with NATO, and we will hear him briefly retell the story of our host's family trip to the Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump National Park in the Alberta Province of Canada.  It was a trip our host said was one to remember. If you would like to learn more about the Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage site here is the link https://headsmashedin.ca/ We hope this is a fitting tribute to a legendary man, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

In this special edition of Bridging the Political Gap we travel back in time to our host's time as a city councilman in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  Prior to his last election in 2017, Mr. Wallace did an interview for the podcast City Council Chronicles. It was the first and only experience at that point Mr. Wallace had had with podcasting and he enjoyed the show a lot. So now that he hosts our podcast on American History and learning ways to bring the country together from studying the World War 2 Generation we thought we might look at how his ideas worked on a small scale when he was still on the city council of Myrtle Beach. This episode is also a special treat for Mr. Wallace because it features a fun story about his Mother Gloria Bulmer, who moved to Myrtle Beach when she semi retired in 2004. That was a little over midway through Councilman Wallace's first term. Now Mrs. Bulmer was not as used to the rough and tumble of politics but she always tuned in to the council meetings and it provided for some funny moments almost as soon as the cameras turned off, and on a few occasions when they were still running too. Mrs, Bulmer passed away in March of 2021, so this interview has a special place in our host's heart.  Enjoy!!

Our Podcast second season was supposed to start in March of 2021 but sadly my Mother passed away on March 17, 2021.  I could think of no better tribute to her than taking this opportunity to introduce her to the world here on my Podcast. There is absolutely nothing I ever achieved that she was not the foundation for throughout my lifetime. As she was recovering from her first illness in 2015, I recorded her talking about our family, her life growing up on a farm in rural South Carolina, my orphaned Grandmother, Ruth Crowley Grant who died when I was seven years old, and my World War 2 era hero Uncle J. B. Crowley. So I hope you will enjoy indulging me in a look at my family, learn a little about growing up in the rural mid 20th century South, an allowing me to preserve my Mother here on "Bridging the Political Gap" because from here on out, as long as we are doing this show, I will always be able to come to this episode and hear my Mother's voice.

In episode 144 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering what makes a magazine cover photographer, Irving Penn the photojournalist, the importance those who came before us, and Covid lockdown independent initiatives. Plus this week photographer John Bulmer takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' John Bulmer was born in 1938 in Herefordshire, the grandson of the founder of the Bulmer cider company. While still a student of engineering at Cambridge he had photographs published in Varsity magazine as well as a magazine he co-founded, Image. He also completed photo-stories for the Daily Express, and Queen magazine, whilst working as an assistant to photographers Larry Burrows and Burt Glinn. Expelled from Cambridge six weeks before his finals Bulmer got a job with the Daily Express and stayed there for two years. Bulmer is most often associated with his documentation of the North of England which he began with his first assignment in 1960, for Town. In 1965, Bulmer first photographed the north of England in colour, for the Sunday Times magazine the magazine who he worked for until 1973. However, Bulmer continued working for other publications, including the British edition of Geo, as he combined photography with film commissions for the BBC and Discovery Channel. As Bulmer moved away from photography to film, his earlier photographic work until it was included in a 1983 exhibition at the Photographers' Gallery, British Photography 1955–65: The Master Craftsmen in Print. Bulmer's career in film continued to the mid-2000s, when he retired and turned to digitising and cataloguing his earlier photographs. The resulted in two books of his work being published by Bluecoat Press, The North and Wind of Change. www.johnbulmer.co.uk *In this episode Grant incorrectly suggests that John Bulmer is married to the film director Mai Zetterling, this is incorrect. Bulmer worked with Zetterling but is married to Angela Bulmer, a sculptor. A full apology for this error will be included in next week's episode. Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, a working photographer, and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Routledge 2014), The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Routledge 2015), New Ways of Seeing: The Democratic Language of Photography (Routledge 2019).
