As a matter of fact, they were able to win a state championship at the Little League level before becoming everyday starters for the Carlsbad Cavemen. Since then, they have been a part of some really good Cavemen teams including a state championship program in 2022 and an ABA Summer Baseball team that helped them both extend their exposure for college baseball. So much has happened in and around Madison Square Park -- the leafy retreat at the intersections of Broadway, Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street -- that telling its entire story requires an extra-sized episode, in honor of our 425th episode.Madison Square Park was the epicenter of New York culture from the years following the Civil War to the early 20th century. The park was really at the heart of Gilded Age New York, whether you were rushing to an upscale restaurant like Delmonico's or a night at the theater or maybe just an evening at one of New York's most luxurious hotels like the Fifth Avenue Hotel or the Hoffman House.The park is surrounded by some of New York's most renowned architecture, from the famous Flatiron Building to the Metropolitan Life Insurance Tower, once the tallest building in the world.The square also lends its name, of course, to one of the most famous sports and performing venues in the world – Madison Square Garden. Its origins begin at the northeast corner of the park on the spot of a former railroad depot and near the spot of the birthplace of an American institution -- baseball.The park introduced New Yorkers to the Statue of Liberty ... or at least her forearm and torch. Delmonico's began as the dream of two Swiss immigrants in the 1820's and grew to be a social center of the Gilded Age.  Prohibition shuttered Delmonico's along with other great New York restaurants. Italian immigrant Oscar Tucci looked at the closed great brownstone former restaurant at 56 Beaver St and decided to reopen it - first as a speakeasy, then as a full continental restaurant that went on to welcome the famous, not-so-famous, and never famous to dine side by side and celebrate tradition and connection. Max Tucci, Oscar Tucci's grandson, has returned as part of the team to reopen Delmonico's and carry on his family's traditions.  Max's story, which he shares in today's show recorded at Delmonico's, is about great food, but also about something more: It's about honoring tradition and one's ancestors.  Related episode:  The Delmonico Way: A Conversation with Max Tucci

The Delmonico Way Max Tucci From Scott Warner, President, Culinary Historians of Chicago I just couldn't pass it up. When I attended the International Association of Culinary Professionals Conference in New York this past September, one limited-seating event had me signing up immediately: an historic dinner in the board room at Delmonico's, hosted by third generation partner and global brand officer, Max Tucci. Max regaled us with the luscious history of what is widely recognized as America's first fine dining restaurant, that began in 1827 in Manhattan as a small cafe and pastry shop. It was opened by Italian-Swiss immigrants, the brothers Giovanni and Pietro Delmonico. Ten years later, in 1837, they moved nearby to what is still Delmonico's present location at 56 Beaver Street — in the heart of Manhattan's financial district. The rich, powerful and famous frequented the eatery. Fast forward 100 years, to 1926, and Italian immigrant Oscar Tucci (Max's grandfather) buys Delmonico's, opens a speakeasy in the basement, continues attracting celebrities and world leaders (i.e.,Elvis, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Marilyn Monroe, Richard Nixon) and institutes many of the professional restaurant standards in use today, known as the Delmonico Way. During the height of the Tucci era, Delmonico's, with its many rooms was considered the largest restaurant in the world. (63,000 sq. ft.) One of the lush private dining rooms included an en suite bedroom — if only the walls could talk! Delmonico's is also credited with being the first U.S. restaurant to use white tablecloths, and the creator of Delmonico steak, Eggs Benedict, Baked Alaska, Lobster Newberg and the Wedge Salad. Welcome to part 2 of our Gulf of Mexico getaway. This episode is all about the restaurants and delicious food we enjoyed while on vacation in Alabama's Gulf Shores area this past February. My husband Jason and I share our top five meals and places to eat, like a smoked turkey sandwich, dry aged Delmonico steak, key lime pie, eggs Benedict atop a waffle, fried pickles and fried chicken, candied yams, Gulf grouper, fontina dip, and mac and cheese. Plus, we talk about the smoked tuna dip and a salad we want to recreate at home. Although it was hard for us to rank our top five out of the more than 15 restaurants we dined at, our number ones ended up being the same, hands down, easy choice. A place that was such a memorable experience, we just knew we were in for something special from the time we called to make the reservation. We don't leave anyone out, so we include honorable mentions like the giant pepperoni pizza and the coffee shop we happened to eat at after we had to turn around and go back to the condo to get Jason's swim trunks. XXXII: In celebration of his new book "The Delmonico Way: Sublime Entertaining and Legendary Recipes From The Restaurant That Made New York," author Max Tucci joins The Gilded Gentleman for a talk about food, family history and the real meaning of hospitality. Delmonico's! Just the name was legendary. Edith Wharton mentioned it in her fiction set in the Gilded Age. The dining room hosted royalty and heads of state along with, in later years, Hollywood's most famous stars. And then there was the equally legendary food. Max Tucci is the grandson of Oscar Tucci who reopened the legendary restaurant in the 1920s after the original - in business since 1827 - had been closed due to Prohibition. Oscar and his family built an empire that established Delmonico's as the gold standard of American fine dining and hospitality from the 1920s through the 1980's.  Max, who holds the largest collection of Delmonico's memorabilia of his family's famous establishment, shares his memories, family history and anecdotes about the incomparable hospitality, fine dishes and famous clientele of America's first truly grand restaurant. Follow Max Tucci on Instagram Back in 2008 (!) the Bowery Boys did a podcast about the history of Delmonico's. Max Tucci   Hospitality is a way of life for Max Tucci, the grandson of the late Oscar Tucci, owner of the famous New York restaurant Delmonico's. The Delmonico brothers opened their first establishment in 1827, in 1926, Delmonico's became a part of Tucci's family. All were always welcome at the table in Delmonico's and that is a legacy that Max continues in his own life. He is intentional about making sure people know that they are seen, heard, appreciated and that they matter. In his book, The Delmonico Way: Sublime Entertaining & Legendary Recipes From the Restaurant That Made New York!, Max Tucci spotlights the incredible food and fame of Delmonico's. Above all, however, Tucci shares the beautiful love story of his family whose legacy continues to define hospitality. You will be inspired to create your own traditions around food and entertaining and to celebrate life in "The Delmonico Way."   How special to realize that my late father was inspired by the delicious legacy of Delmonico's to create a special family tradition. My fondest childhood taste memory is that of Eggs Benedict. Each Saturday my father would meticulously prepare the hollandaise sauce and pour it over this special breakfast dish. Eggs Benedict was actually invented at Delmonico's in the late 1860s by Chef Charles Ranhofer who named this dish after Mrs. LeGrand Benedict, a frequent diner at the restaurant.   What a delight to have recently met Max in New York City during the International Association of Culinary Professionals Awards at the Middleby Residential New York Showroom. Our mutual friend, Jennifer English connected us. Max is now a very dear foodie friend, and I look forward to many conversations and delicious meals with him. Andrea Karnes' book Women Painting Women (Delmonico Books, 2022) documents a wide-ranging exhibit inclusive of women as both the makers and subjects of paintings. The artists hail from around the world, and over the past half-century. Our conversation took several directions. One was to discuss the power of the gaze; who's looking, who's being seen, and the poses evident more a matter of self-agency or passivity. Another angle was the body itself, with these female images being more realistic and often far less glamorous than commercial popular culture allows for. Third, what subject matter tropes are being overturned – from Christianity to pornography, and points in between. As the exhibit strived to accomplish, there should be something here for everyone – women especially. Andrea Karnes is the Chief Curator at the Modern Art Museum of forth Worth. She joined the museum as a receptionist in 1989 and has risen through the ranks into her current role, where she has served as the curator for over 40 shows that mostly focus on female artists. Carol Delmonico of Bend, Oregon, is a life coach, mentor, and author with a background as an RN in health coaching. She enjoys helping people focus on their mental well-being and now works with people who are discouraged by the current status quo lifestyle and want to live in line with their deeper values and have more meaning and joy every day. Carol has been helping her clients transition through some of the changes the pandemic has brought into the lives of so many, and she is quick to say that it's not so much about work-life balance that people are looking for but simply life balance. In this episode, Carol shares how she's been able to connect with others through laughter yoga, even online through Zoom. Getting down on all fours and baa-ing like a sheep is a great way to set the mood and lighten the atmosphere to help people move into deeper laughter and the feel-good hormones that come with it, even for those who might not initially feel like laughing. She also talks about the importance of celebrating small wins by taking mini-breaks about 2 minutes long. Carol feels that adopting an attitude of wonder can be life-changing, and she encourages others to ask questions that start with phrases such as "I wonder what would happen if..." and "I wonder how I can..." Carol and her co-creator, Casey Davis, wrote guidebooks for Wonder Uprising and host workshops in person and online together. They offer mentoring and classes where people can reflect, consider, and unfurl a wider and deeper wondering. Carol works the majority of the time as a solopreneur and loves to mentor people who feel disconnected from parts of themselves and are looking for greater well-being through reconnecting. In today's segment, Susan Delmonico of SJD Health and Fitness, joins to discuss sugar in our diet. Sugar is linked with so many health issues beyond obesity. From disease to diabetes, acne to inflammation, sugar should be limited as much as possible. To give you an idea, one 16 oz. can of regular soda has more sugar in it than the current recommended guidelines for a healthy diet. Susan also reminds us how food manufacturers will hide the term "sugar" by using other names for it. Some of the common names to look for include: dextrose, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, glucose, lactose and sucrose. Basically if the word ends in "ose," you are ingesting sugar.  Susan acknowledges we cannot completely eliminate sugar and we should not deny ourselves the occasional treat at birthday or other celebrations. However, what sneaks up on all of us are the unknown amounts in so many other products. Many items labeled as "fat free" will have to use sugar in some fashion to help make up the taste. It's ironic that foods labeled in a way to make you think they are healthy, may actually be worse for you in the long run. Learning how to read labels is key in making better choices at the grocery store.  It may seem cliche, but water is still the best drink for you on a daily basis. It helps keep you hydrated, helps to flush your system of unhealthy items and can often curb your hunger pangs. In fact, many times we mistake thirst for hunger.
