Michael Rockefeller was the great grandson of John D. Rockefeller, the founder of Standard Oil and the richest man in the world. He was also the son of Nelson Rockefeller, New York governor, Vice President of the United States, and a well known art collector. Michael had big shoes to fill. To do that, he followed in his father's art collecting footsteps, traveling to the Asmat region on the west coast of New Guinea to collect wood carvings for his father's Museum of Primitive Art in Manhattan. The Asmat people were hunter gatherers living in the jungle with almost no western contact. They led a very different life than Michael, practiced head hunting and cannibalism. Michael admired the Asmat, their culture, their art. But he never truly understood them. He couldn't. So when his sailboat capsized near the village of Otsjanep and he disappeared attempting to swim to shore, never to be seen again, his family assumed he had drowned. But did Michael Rockefeller really drown? Or was his fate far more violent? Let's fix that. Support the show! Join the PatreonBuy Me a CoffeeVenmo @Shea-LaFountaineSources: "Savage Harvest: A Tale of Cannibals, Colonialism, and Michael Rockefeller's Tragic Quest for Primitive Art" by Carl HoffmanSmithsonian Magazine "What Really Happened to Michael Rockefeller"The Met Museum "Bis Pole"Rockefeller Archive Center "John D. With his amazing new book, Deaths of Artists (Blast Books), archivist Jim Moske explores art, mortality, media, fame and our secret lives. We talk about his chance discovery in the Met Museum's archives of century-old scrapbooks filled with artists' obituaries, his attraction to the obits' tabloid poetry, and how he fell down the rabbit-hole of figuring out the scandalous, redemptive life of their compiler, Arthur D'Hervilly. We get into what these obits — and D'Hervilly's life — can teach us about art and artistic reputation, the challenges of working with 100+-year-old newsprint, the aesthetic pleasure of historical records, and why Jim considered doing this project as a 'zine (just like last week's guest!). We also discuss how he got started as an archivist, his favorite phases of the Met's history, how artists have responded to his book, his archive of illegible historical documents (!), the impact of digitization and electronics on the archivist field, what we lose when materiality goes away, the oblique influence of Bolaño's 2666 on Deaths of Artists, and how D'Hervilly's art-obit collection became a chronicle of the democratization of art. Prophecy Radio episode #92 catches you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, from upcoming Rick Riordan Presents books like Fury of the Dragon Goddess to the current WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes and what they mean for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series on Disney+. This week, we're also talking about The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid by tackling chapter 16, in which Zia embraces the singed-eyebrow look. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:06:26) Happy birthday, Annabeth Chase! Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda releases on August 1. Pre-order it here. Make sure you check out the virtual launch event for the book! Read Riordan has an article so you can refresh your memory on City of the Plague God. If you want play D&D with Sarwat Chadda, you can learn all the details here. You can also catch up with Daoud and meet Dumuzi, thanks to Read Riordan. Sarwat had a lot of wonderful things to say about being a part of the Rick Riordan Presents family. The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi got a starred review from Publisher's Weekly. Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro share their favorite recent reads. Be sure to check out the Boston Book Festival, where Rick will be a keynote speaker this year. Read Riordan is hitting it out of the park with this Chalice of the Gods articles, including the one about the New Rome University course guide. We have SO. MANY. IDEAS. Would you want John Rocco to do a special edition cover for Chalice of the Gods so it could match your original series? Someone needs to update this Percy Jackson guide to the Met Museum. Don't expect to see Nico and Bianca in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1. We're so happy Glynn Turman got to pick the horse he's working with on the show. Let's talk about Percy Jackson at San Diego Comic-Con 2023. Did you catch the new Percy Jackson poster and SDCC bag? Looks like there's a chance of Percy Jackson on Saturday. We get to see a slightly new image of the trio. And here's a picture of the Disney Books poster at SDCC 2023. Kristen breaks down new information about the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, plus what it means for us at the podcast. Huge thank you to Mel for asking us to go into detail about all of this! You can find the SAG-AFTRA strike rules on Variety. The biggest one to keep in mind is that if the studio is asking you to promote something, DON'T DO IT. Yes, the podcast will keep covering all the Percy Jackson and the Olympians news because we are just fans talking about what we love. What's the future of these strikes? D.B. Woodside had some really important information to share about why SAG is striking. What does all this mean for Percy Jackson and the Olympians? Why isn't Rick saying much about the show? What projects are on hold and which ones can he still work on? Why wasn't Rick Riordan at Comic-Con? We'll keep you updated with more information once it becomes available! Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (01:08:50) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 16. Put us down for not wanting to be woken up the way Zia wakes Sadie. Why didn't Carter sleep well? How do we get some bottled Thoth Water? That tongue tattoo was pretty cool. Either do what Zia tells you to…or die. What are the magicians' specialties and which can we unanimously agree is a no-go for us? There are some really great moments while Carter and Sadie learn to bring hierglyphs to life with magic. We're so happy we learned about Luxor/Thebes in our last episode. How strong is Zia, exactly? It's time to duel, and it definitely does not go according to plan. We learn a little bit more about the Kanes' familial background. Iskandar is dead, and even though we saw this coming, it's still sad. It also spells major trouble for the Kanes. Zia's willing to give them a five-minute head start, and that's about as good as it's going to get. Feedback (01:28:42) Tim writes in with a little What If… for The Last Olympian. Caoimhe also catches us up on her reactions to the last few episodes and gives us a great idea for a future one. It seems Bobbi is as big of a fan of Hapshetsut as we are. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 93, in which we'll discuss City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda, and then read The Red Pyramid chapter 17! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. This fall, Gavin brings WALK ON THROUGH: Confessions of a Museum Novice to Off-Broadway's MCC Theater for a limited run. In his theatrical songwriting debut, Gavin takes us on an intimate, relatable journey of discovery and transformation through the lens of the art at The Met Museum that captured his imagination. On television, Creel recently performed a solo PBS concert special with “Stars on Stage",” starred as Troy in Ryan Murphy's anthology series “American Horror Stories” and played Bill alongside Julie Andrews in “Eloise at the Plaza” and “Eloise at Christmasttime.” As a songwriter, Creel is currently writing an original musical piece entitled WALK ON THROUGH, based on the collections at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The musical has been selected for the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center's 2022 National Musical Theatre Conference and the concert meets musical was highlighted in The Day. He has released three original albums: GoodTimeNation, Quiet (which landed on Billboard's “Top Heat Seekers”), Get Out, and his single “Noise” raised money and awareness for marriage equality. New Tuesday, new episode!  This week in Asian American politics… Republican Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy announces that he wants to raise the voting age to 25 or have 18 year olds take a civics test to opt out. Even his own staff reportedly hated the idea and begged him to wait on announcing it until they had more research.  Layoffs at the companies society has grown dependent on impact online safety and misinformation teams. We're talking entire teams disappearing and the tools they developed going right with them into the Thanos snap. If you thought misinformation was bad during C*VID, buckle up for the 2024 election.  A Chinese American scientist is suing the FBI after they threatened him with 80 years of prison, $1 million in fees, and holding his family at gunpoint. If he wins, the case would be a landmark victory in holding the US government accountable for rampant Sinophobia. The Metropolitan Museum announced they will do a better job of making sure they aren't showcasing illegally stolen art. What measures are they implementing to ensure they are displaying the most legal of the stolen art?   AAPI startups and non-profits experienced a wave of funding during the Stop Asian Hate movement. We discuss the implications of this momentum and what that means for the future.  -- WHAT'S POLITICALLY ASIAN PODCAST? -- We're two Asian American comedians talking about politics and the Asian American community to get more Asians talking about politics! ‘The Witcher' TV show might not seem like the most natural inspiration for enthusiastically queer romance writing, but for some fanfic authors, it's a world rich with creative inspiration. Fanfic writers, especially those missing authentic representation in mainstream media, have long used their own writing to make stories that speak to them. And fandom communities, once niche conventions and now massive online archives and popular forums, offer welcoming spaces to explore and build friendships. This is the first of our special series about the many worlds of fandom. To see the (explicit!) fanart of Gulliver's Travels mentioned in the episode, head to the Met Museum's archives.

CURTIS STEWART is a multi Grammy-nominated violinist/composer who enjoys bouncing between MTV specials with Wyclef Jean and sold out shows at Madison Square Garden with Stevie Wonder to stints at the Kennedy Center with the Jimmy Heath Big Band and runs at the Guggenheim, MoMA and Whitney Museums in NYC. Curtis has performed as a classical soloist at Lincoln Center, with the New York Philharmonic Bandwagon, as well as held chamber music residencies at Carnegie Hall, the MET Museum and National Sawdust. His work realizes a vision to find personal and powerful connections between styles, cultures, and music. Curtis teaches at The Juilliard School, Perlman Music Program, has been commissioned to write works for the Royal Conservatory of music, The Virginia Symphony, The Eastman Cello Institute, New York Festival of Song, PUBLIQuartet, and Carnegie Hall: Play/USA.  www.curtisjstewart.com"I have always grappled between being an educator, a creator/composer, a writer of verse, an improviser, quartet-mate, band-mate, administrator.   I can't seem to sit still in one role, and I have never seen myself as such - both because I am trying to survive as an artist, and because my passions for each one of the above vie for attention at all times.  I left teaching highschool for 10 years because the NYC Department of Ed was totally inflexible with me taking off days for performance.  I began creating my recent album OF POWER in my living room because I couldn't get together with my friends in PUBLIQuartet. In the end, it all balances on supporting myself just enough to be able to express and create from a place of authenticity, vulnerability and invention." ~ CJS
