A proposed wind farm off Clare's west coast is being described as the "foundation stone" for attracting multinational companies to the region. Clare's elected councillors have convened this week to discuss the planned 450-megawatt Sceirdre Rocks Offshore Wind Farm which would consist of 30 wind turbines of over 1,000 feet in height off the coast of Clare and Galway. The comments made at the meeting will now be appended as a submission to the Chief Executive's Report on the planning application to be sent to An Bórd Pleanála. Kilmurry Ibrickane Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Shannon says it's crucial the development makes it more attractive for firms to set up in West Clare.

He explains that the universe responds to our imaginative acts, and nothing exists independently of perception. The Bible's "foundation stone" symbolizes imagination, which many reject, yet it is the true creative power. Using Peter's story, Neville illustrates how belief wavers when people turn to external efforts instead of trusting imagination. He emphasizes the importance of unwavering faith, patience, and detachment from the "how" of manifestation. Through real-life examples, he shows how persistence in imagination leads to success in unexpected ways.Key Concepts & ApplicationImagination is the Creative Power → Everything in your life is a reflection of your imagination.Remain Faithful to Your Assumption → Once you imagine a desired outcome, do not doubt or try to force it externally. The Universe Responds → What you vividly assume as true will manifest in ways you cannot predict.Rejection of the "Stone" → Many ignore imagination's power and instead rely on external effort.Patience is Key → Some manifestations take time; do not waver or react negatively if results aren't immediate. All is Connected → Your thoughts and emotions influence others, shaping reality beyond your awareness. ***Download the free Neville Goddard PDF Guide at manifestwithneville.com - Discover the transformative power of Neville Goddard's wisdom with this FREE 60-page guide on his 12 timeless principles of manifestation and reality creation.★ Follow the podcast for daily lectures from the mystic Neville Goddard ★FREE RESOURCES:• Join the FREE Neville Goddard newsletter• Join the FREE Telegram Channel• Feeling is the Secret • Full Audiobook* * *The James Xander Trip Podcast:• Listen on Spotify• Listen on Apple Podcasts• Listen on YouTubeDIVE DEEPER:• The Unlock God Mode Course• The Infinite Wealth Guided Meditation* * *ABOUT NEVILLE GODDARD:Neville Goddard (1905-1972), was an English writer, speaker and mystic. The TEMPLES of God (2): Christ, our Foundation

Oxford Bible Church - Living in the Last Days

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 21, 2025 28:30

God's ultimate purpose for man is that we should be TEMPLES of the LIVING GOD, with God living in us and shining His glory through us. God introduced the concept of Temples (places where God chooses to dwell among men) to the human race from the beginning, which is why temples are in every ancient culture & religion. All EARTHLY TEMPLES of God were patterned according to a heavenly blueprint, the HEAVENLY TEMPLE (Heb 8:5). The Bible describes a sequence of earthly Temples, and all these earthly & heavenly Temples are pictures, encoding revelation of God's ultimate eternal Temple – redeemed Man in Christ. We need to put together all the clues provided by all the different temples, to see how they all harmonise together, to give a complete picture of who we're called to be as His ultimate Temple. All Temples of God have a tripartite structure: (1) HOLY of HOLIES, (2) HOLY PLACE & (3) OUTER COURT. Likewise, we (1) ARE a SPIRIT, (2) HAVE a SOUL, and (3) LIVE in a BODY. Gen 2:7: “The Lord formed man (1) of the dust of the ground (man's BODY), and (2) BREATHED into his nostrils the BREATH of LIFE (man's SPIRIT); and (3) man became a living SOUL.” The fusion of man's SPIRIT (created by God's breath) & BODY (made from the earth) formed his SOUL. We're not just individually Temples of God, but are designed to be part of one great corporate TEMPLE of God consisting of all believers. We're LIVING STONES that fit together into a far greater Temple of God. Each has a unique place in that greater Temple of the Holy Spirit. We are all (1) living stones in the TEMPLE of God the Spirit, (2) members of the FAMILY of God the Father, and (3) members of the BODY of Christ the Son. So, we need to think corporately as well as individually. In Matthew 16, Peter is used as an example of a believer, who comes into and becomes part of God's Temple by faith in Christ (v15-17). Jesus said in v18: “you are Peter (petros, small stone), and ON this ROCK (petra, massive foundation stone) I will build My CHURCH.” The FOUNDATION STONE or ROCK for the Church is CHRIST Himself (1Cor 3:11, 10:4). Peter, an example & picture of all believers, is a small LIVING STONE, that becomes part of the Church, the Temple of God, built on the FOUNDATION ROCK - CHRIST. As living stones built on Christ, we partake of His life & nature (made of the same stuff). He then predicted His death & resurrection (v21). By laying His life down and then rising from the dead, he established Himself as the FOUNDATION STONE for the CHURCH, the TEMPLE of God. The CHURCH only came into existence as the new TEMPLE of God after He laid Himself down as its FOUNDATION STONE in His death & resurrection. In v18, Jesus declared He will BUILD His CHURCH on HIMSELF as the ROCK FOUNDATION. But first, He had to lay Himself down as the Foundation Stone (v21). He's saying in v18-21: “I am the foundation ROCK & foundation SACRIFICE of my new Temple, the Church.” So, thru His death & resurrection, His Temple has a firm FOUNDATION, consecrated to God - the risen CHRIST, who upholds the whole Building before God. Having declared Himself the ROCK-FOUNDATION of His CHURCH, He said: “I first have to die as the foundation Blood Sacrifice, to make this a reality” (v21). He died and was buried as the Foundation Sacrifice, dedicating Himself to God as the FOUNDATION for God's Temple. On the basis of His shed Blood, He was resurrected & established & consecrated to God as the Foundation Stone for God's eternal Temple (Heb 13:20). To be in the Kingdom (Temple) of God, we must enter in through Christ, our Threshold Stone, through faith in His sacrificial death & resurrection for us. To reject His Blood Sacrifice, counting it as something of no value, is to trample on Him & His precious Blood, resulting in eternal punishment (Heb 10:29). CHRIST Himself is the FOUNDATION STONE or ROCK (1Cor 3:11). He completed the laying down of this FOUNDATION of HIMSELF in His death, burial & resurrection. So, He's now our living FOUNDATION. 1Peter 2:4: “COMING to HIM (the risen CHRIST) as to a LIVING STONE (the FOUNDATION STONE), rejected indeed by men (His death), but chosen by God & precious (His resurrection & exaltation).” 1Peter 2:5: “You also, as LIVING STONES, are being BUILT UP (together) as a spiritual HOUSE (upon Christ, filled with the Holy Spirit), a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” Thru our union with CHRIST, the LIVING FOUNDATION STONE, we are blessed with His life & nature, and so become LIVING STONES, built together into the Temple of God upon Christ, our Foundation. So, Christ told Peter he was a LIVING STONE, BLESSED with eternal life, part of God's Temple, built on the ROCK of CHRIST, the LIVING FOUNDATION STONE in Matthew 16, and Peter applies this to all believers in 1Peter 2:5. This House is the HOLY TEMPLE of God, the DWELLING PLACE of God (1Cor 3:16-17, Eph 2:21-22).

In this session on Step 12 AA, Joe discusses the crucial role of helping others as the foundation stone of recovery. He emphasizes that recovery built on anything less than stone is insufficient.“They talked about housing them, giving them money, doing those types of things. But be sure you're doing the right thing if you assume them. How do I make sure I'm doing the right thing? Yeah, by now I'm in prayer and meditation, hopefully on a more regular basis as I go through my day. So I know what they need—not necessarily what they want—what they need, yes. Helping others is the foundation stone of your recovery. Now they're speaking directly to me, perhaps to you. Do I want a recovery that has a foundation of anything less than stone? I do not. So that's how seriously I have to take your life because your life's been placed in my hands for a moment to access this solution that inhabits us both, yes. A kindly act once in a while isn't enough. Was it a kindly hit once in a while ever enough? No.”Joe explores the importance of consistent action in supporting others as a cornerstone of lasting recovery. He encourages reflection on the seriousness of our role in helping others, emphasizing that occasional acts of kindness are not sufficient for a solid recovery foundation.Join us as Joe McDonald reads and expands on the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, offering deeper understanding and practical advice for those on their recovery journey. This episode is a little different—instead of host Mike Cosper talking to Christians, Muslims, and Jews around the world, he's the one answering questions. Clarissa Moll, producer of CT's The Bulletin, interviews Cosper about his experience of hosting the series. Cosper shares what drew him to this project, how he sees its value within the rest of CT's reporting, and why he selected his specific interviewees. He and Moll discuss how Christian perspectives on Israel and Palestine have shifted in recent years. They consider the impact of the fog of war on the podcast and address critical feedback of “Promised Land,” specifically listener responses that say the show has ignored human rights violations committed by Israel and not acknowledged the failures of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Tune in for an episode that dives deep into the nuances of the Israel-Palestine relationship, and speaks clearly to ways that Christians can pray for their brothers and sisters in the Middle East. “Promised Land” is a limited series exploring the moral, spiritual, and political challenges presented by the Israel-Hamas war. In this episode of Promised Land: A Bulletin Miniseries, host Mike Cosper visits Ashkelon, home of the ancient Philistines, just a few miles north of the Gaza border. Through conversations centered around Barzilai Medical Center, Cosper explores why the West requires Israel to play by different rules when it comes to defense and modern warfare. Weaving history with present day narratives, he posits compelling questions: Why is the West so quick to blame Israel for colonialism? Why does compromise on both sides – Israeli and Palestinian – often feel like treason? What are the stories each side is telling about themselves and about the other? And, can peace ever be achieved when one side becomes the absolute victim? Listen in for compelling commentary on the history of this contested land, a land where everyone claims to be a refugee. David Brown was born in Roanoke in 1967. His early exposure to live music came courtesy of his parents, who took him to see Ike and Tina Turner, the Eagles, and other iconic acts in the early 1970s. With a mother who played piano exceptionally well and parents who enjoyed popular music, David's childhood was filled with the sounds of Janis Joplin, The Doobie Brothers, Neil Diamond, Ann Murray, and a variety of tunes from FM radio. His fascination with drums began at the age of 10, and in 1980, David met Kelly Scott, Jody Ensor, and John Ayers, who became pivotal figures in his drumming journey. Encouraged by his mother, David delved into drumming, idolizing Neil Peart and Rush while also participating in his high school band. David's musical journey took a significant turn when he enrolled at Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee, in the late 1980s. There, he immersed himself in music theory, private lessons, and the vibrant live music scene, enriching his musical palette. Since the mid-1980s, David has been deeply involved with various local bands, including Hoppie Vaughan, Phil Norman, Cory Brammer, Foundation Stone, and Kerosene Willy, among others. However, his true passion lies in collaborating with fellow musicians who craft original songs, making it his favorite aspect of musical involvement.

Marsha Stone grew up in Southern Georgia to a family that struggled with generational alcoholism. She eventually married her best drinking buddy and quickly had three kids, then just as quickly she was alone. The responsibility of raising them fell squarely on her shoulders and the fear of how she would care for them left her with many sleepless nights. She decided she wanted to go to law school and believed her three young kids and their situation seemed to guarantee that she would have a chance to get her school paid for. And sure enough, it did.In law school, her alcoholism took off, but she told herself it was all reasonable. Anyone in her difficult situation would do the same thing. The alcohol started to cause her to slip near the end of her education, but she was able to keep it together just long enough to graduate. Then came a law career speckled with heavy drinking and even saw her sneaking cocaine into the courtroom before finally getting sober in 2008. Since then Marsha has found success in addiction recovery as one of the few female CEOs in the industry. In 2023 she founded Foundation Stone, a network of boutique, focused programs for individuals and their families struggling with mental health, substance use disorder and co-occurring disorders across the U.S. Their first featured treatment center, Amend opened in Austin, Texas in spring 2023.Episode ResourcesWebsite | marshastone.comAmend Wellness | amendwellnessretreat.comConnect with MarshaInstagram | @marsha.stone_atxConnect with The Courage to ChangePodcast Website | lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram | @couragetochange_podcastYouTube | The Courage to Change PodcastTikTok | @ashleyloebblassingamePodcast Email | podcast@lionrock.lifePodcast Facebook | @thecouragetochangepodcastLionrock ResourcesLionrock Life Mobile App | lionrock.life/mobile-appSupport Group Meeting Schedule | lionrock.life/meetings

The Friday Newsletter | Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events 1575 Birth of Jakob Böhme, German original thinker. Jakob Böhme did a great deal of thinking and writing, not only about theology and Christianity but also about the natural world.   Here's what Mary Oliver wrote about Böhme. I read Jacob Boehme and am caught in his shining web. Here are Desire and Will that should be (he says) as two arms at one task; in my life they are less cooperative. Will keeps sliding away down the hill to play when work is called for and Desire piously wants to labor when the best season of merriment is around me. Troublemakers both of them them.   And another writer I admire and enjoy is Elizabeth Gilbert. Elizabeth wrote about Jakob Böhme in her book, The Signature of All Things. The title of her book is from something that Jakob Böhme had written.  Jacob Boehme was a sixteenth-century cobbler from Germany who had mystical visions about plants. Many people considered him an early botanist. Alma's mother, on the other hand, had considered him a cesspool of residual medieval superstition. So there was considerable conflict of opinion surrounding Jacob Boehme. The old cobbler had believed in something he called the signature of all things"- namely, that God had hidden clues for humanity's betterment inside the design of every flower, leaf, fruit, and tree on earth. All the natural world was a divine code, Boehme claimed, containing proof of our Creator's love.   1766 Robert Bailey Thomas, founder, editor, and publisher of The Old Farmer's Almanac, is born. Robert made his first edition - his very first copy of The Old Farmer's Almanac -back in 1792.    1889 Paul George Russell, American botanist, is born. Paul George Russell was born in Liverpool, New York. He worked as a botanist for the United States government for over five decades. Paul George Russell went on collecting trips in Northern Mexico. He's remembered in the names of several different plants, including the Verbena russellii, a woody flowering plant that is very pretty. And he's also remembered in the naming of the Opuntia russellii, which is a type of prickly pear cactus. Now during his career, Paul George Russell could identify plants based on what their seeds looked like. One of the ways that he developed this skill is he compiled a seed bank of over 40,000 different types of sources. Today Paul George is most remembered for his work with cherry trees. He was a vital part of the team that was created to install the living architecture of Japanese cherry trees around the Washington Tidal Basin. Paul George Russell put together a little bulletin, a little USDA circular called Oriental Flowering Cherries, in March 1934. It was his most impressive work. His guide provided all kinds of facts and detailed information about the trees just when it was needed most. People were curious about the cherry trees and fell utterly in love with them once they saw them blooming in springtime. Paul George Russell passed away at the age of 73 after having a heart attack. On a poignant note, he was supposed to see his beloved cherry trees in bloom with his daughter. They had planned a trip to go to the tidal basin together. But unfortunately, that last visit never happened. So this year, when you see the cherry trees bloom, raise a trowel to Paul, George Russell, and remember him and his fine work. And if you can get your hands on a copy of that 72-page circular he created in 1934, that's a find. It's all still good information.   1841 Charles Sprague Sargent, American botanist, is born. He was the first director of Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum.  Charles was known for being a little curmudgeonly. He was pretty stoic. One of my favorite stories about Charles was the day he went on an exploration of mountains. The botanist accompanying him could hardly contain himself when they stopped at a spot of singular beauty. The botanist was jumping around and shouting for joy, and he looked over at Charles Sprague Sargent and said something to the effect of "How can you stand there and say and do nothing amidst this incredible beauty?" That's one of my favorite stories and a glimpse into the personality of Charles Sprague Sargent.   1914 James M. Bates observed a deep violet patch of blooming flowers in an alfalfa field in Arcadia Valley County in Nebraska. James wrote about the experience in a publication called The American Botanist. The plant that James was writing about was Chorispora tenella, which is in the mustard family. It is known by several common names, including purple mustard, Musk mustard, or the cross flower - because it's a crucifer meaning the flowers are in a cross shape.   Now the name Musk flower has to do with the fragrance, the smell;, on a website for Colorado wildflowers, the author wrote, I think they smell of Crayola crayons, warmed and melting in the sun. And so I called this plant, the crayon plant.   So purple mustard or Muskflower, however, you call it, is edible, in case you were wondering. The backyard forger writes that You can snip the top four to six inches off of each plant. Including the flowers, which are not only edible, but pretty, now you might be asking yourself, how could I use purple mustard And feast magazine says this purple mustard can be used much the same way as you would. Other mustards Spread some on your next arugala sandwich. Serve it alongside pickles and crusty bread with charcuterie. Whisk a teaspoon into your vinaigrettes instead of Dijon. So there are some uses for your purple mustard.   1916 Today Vassar College honored Shakespeare on the 300th anniversary of his death by planting pansies. Students from Winifred Smith's Shakespeare class and Emmeline Moore's botany class planted the pansies in a garden on the school grounds. And, of course, Shakespeare referred to pansies as the flower for thoughts. A flower that can withstand the cold, pansies have a chemical, essentially nature's antifreeze, that allows it to fight those cold temperatures. The Canadian naturalist Charles Joseph Sariol once said that pansies should be grown from seed. Beatrix Potter liked Pansies. And the happy poet Edgar Albert Guest wrote about pansies in verse from his poem To Plant a Garden.  If you'd get away from boredom, And find new delights to look for, Learn the joy of budding pansies, Which you've kept a special nook for.   Pansies are a happy flower and a great way to honor Shakespeare.   1919 Ernest H. Wilson worked at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University and received a shipment of Kurume azaleas from Japan. Ernest wrote, "104 azaleas were unpacked at the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard, and all were found alive. Considering the length of their journey. They were in good condition." Ernest also alludes to the fact that he had to work on nurturing his relationship with his growers and gardeners. The Kurume azaleas were grown by a Japanese gardener who had "a reluctance to part with them". And so the fact that these azaleas made it to America was in no small measure due to the relationship building and people skills of Ernest Henry Wilson - something that doesn't often get enough attention when we think about plant explorers.     Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Tiny and Wild by Graham Laird Gardner Graham has the perfect last name for a garden author - Gardner. I mean, how'd that happen? In any case, this is a beautiful book. It's one of the prettiest books for gardeners this year. And the subtitle is Build a Small-Scale Meadow Anywhere. So, of course, we're talking about creating tiny Meadows on your property.   The cover of this book had to be appealing; there are a lot of attractive purple flowers in the meadows, of course. The cover illustrates how you can integrate wildflowers - flowers you will find in Meadows that you can use in your outdoor living spaces and garden designs- and how those flowers play an essential role in our ecosystems.   Now Graham kicks things off in this book by asking, "Why a mini meadow?" (I will share my thoughts on why a mini meadow might be just the ticket for your garden after Graham's appeal.) Graham writes, You've heard the calling for a more resilient biodiverse garden, full of flowers and movement that's inspired by natural plant communities and the wild spaces around you. Perhaps you feel a sense of nostalgia for the wilderness of your childhood? Or need to invite wild places home. Do you have a balcony or an underperforming section of yard? Maybe you have an area of lawn you'd like to convert or a section of your veggie plot you'd like to devote to attracting more pollinators and other beneficial insects; however, you're not quite sure where to begin.   And so, of course, many Meadows might be the solution that you've been looking for. Now, when I think about answering the question, "Why mini-meadows?" I think the timing is correct in terms of design trends and acceptance. We've all been exposed to Piet Oudolf's gardens, and he's been incorporating plants like grasses and wildflowers for so long. He's been painting our public spaces with his version of Meadows - beautiful, beautiful Meadows - that are handpicked and planted to maximize beauty. So I think gardeners are ready for this book. The other day, I talked to my neighbor across the street, and she shares a common pond area with other neighbors. And for most of the year, it can be rather unsightly, especially if we're going through a drought. And so she was wondering what they could do, what they should be planting, and I think the answer is found in this book with many of the plants that would go in a meadow. Think of all kinds of grasses, wildflowers, and of course, incorporating lots of native plants - embracing the wildness that you find along so many of our waterways, whether it's a river, a brook, or a pond, for instance. Now the chapters in this book are as follows: First, find inspiration in your parks and the plant communities that are around you. The second chapter talks about the importance of site selection. Don't underestimate this because, as the saying goes for real estate and houses when you're going to home your plants, you need to think about location, location, location. Then the third chapter talks about design tips for your mini meadow -how to combine the beauty and the function of a field in your garden. The next couple of chapters get into the nitty-gritty of installing a meadow, which isn't as complicated as it sounds, but it's great to have a detailed guide like this to help you remember all the little details. Chapter Six talks about how to maintain your meadow, which is Probably the most crucial chapter in the book, and it's where the bulk of your annual laborers will come into play. And then, chapter seven is the fun chapter - What to Plant. Here Graham shares a bunch of different plant lists and charts so that you can pick the perfect plants for your tiny metal. I love that. So in the past couple of years, you've heard me talk about planting mini orchards, Reforesting with mini forests - and now we are here, building Tiny and wild Meadows In our gardens. You can get a copy of Tiny and Wild by Graham Laird Gardner and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $17.   Botanic Spark 1916 On this day, a small garden known as Foundation Stone was installed at Farm Leigh house in Phoenix Park. A man named Patrick Pearse helped christen the garden with a commemorative speech. This unique garden was a reflection of the solar system on that very day. So the planets and their alignment were perfectly represented by nine lichen-covered boulders positioned to orbit a granite bowl, representing the sun. This simple garden with nine boulders and a granite bowl also incorporated circular ripples of grass around the boulders, accentuating their perfect placement in the garden, which mirrored the night sky. To me, this garden perfectly illustrates that there is no end to the amount of creativity we can use when it comes to garden design.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

Marsha Stone is the CEO and founder of Foundation Stone, a network of boutique-focused programs for individuals and their families struggling with mental health, substance use disorder, and co-occurring disorders across the U.S. Their first featured treatment center, Amend, is set to open in Austin, Texas, in the spring of 2023. Led by a team of specialized medical experts, treatment programs at Amend will aim to identify the root causes of mental health diagnoses through integrative and functional medicine. Marsha integrates her own experiences of overcoming addiction into providing effective and quality rehabilitative programming to those struggling with various mental health issues. In episode 60 of the Dominate Your Day podcast, Dana Williams and Marsha Stone discussed the negative connotations commonly associated with the process of recovery, which can blind individuals from seeing the benefits of seeking help. As an expert on addiction recovery, intervention, family therapy, behavioral health, wellness, and ethics in treatment center management, Marsha shares her personal journey of her struggles with addiction,  leading several non-profit organizations, and how she now considers herself a serial entrepreneur in the business of helping people. By reframing the conversation around mental health and addiction, Marsha is committed to improving wellbeing and helping individuals navigate the shame and stigma that often come with seeking help. With Foundation Stone and the upcoming Amend treatment center, Marsha hopes to provide a safe and compassionate environment for individuals and their families to heal and recover. In this episode, you'll learn…  Assistant District Attorney in the Southern Judicial District of Georgia to becoming the CEO of BRC Recovery in Austin, Texas, how a seismic shift changed her life and catapulted a journey in recovery. Rewiring your life, re-clarifying definitions of addiction, alcoholism, shame, and trauma in the world of wellbeing. Failure is an acceptable outcome, it cements an opportunity for learning and growth. Empowering women in the five areas of wellbeing. Click here to listen to my conversation with Marsha Stone. This video is about the Neville Goddard audiobook Your Faith Is Your Fortune. This is the second book written by Neville Goddard in 1941.The Foundation Stone 1 Cor. 3:10, 11, 12, 13The foundation of all expression is consciousness There is only one power and this power is God (consciousness).  The world is the mirror magnifying all that I AM conscious of being. Leave the mirror and change your face. “How would I feel if I were free?”The feeling (thrill) that comes in response to this self-questioning is the Father state of consciousness or Foundation stone As you wear a feeling it becomes your nature It might take a moment or a year — it is entirely dependent upon the degree of conviction Your problem might have you do hypnotized by it's seeming reality and naturalness that you find it difficult to wear the new feeling or consciousness of your savior. To explore the world of insights that I don't share on YouTube, join my email list:https://www.schoolofi.org/emailDid you learn something from this video? DAVID ASCENDS to the throne in Jerusalem, and we recount the history of Israel, including some startling examples of warfare in the unseen realm, in the psalms accompanying our study this week. First, we discuss the Jebusites and the city of Jebus, which apparently was the area around the stronghold of Zion, which is the City of David—the area just south of the Temple Mount. “Jebus” means “threshing floor,” from a verb meaning “to tread down,” as in treading out the grain. In the ancient world, as Sharon wrote in Veneration, threshing floors were believed to be portals to the spirit realm. This is an interesting connection to the Hurrian people, relevant because Araunah, owner of the threshing floor on Mount Moriah, is not a name but a title that means “lord” or “king.” The Hurrians believed that gods of the underworld, including spirits of the dead, had to be summoned from the underworld in an underground pit called the abi, from which the Hebrews got the word ôb (“medium”). It just happens that there is a cave directly below the Foundation Stone on the Temple Mount called the Holy of Holies by the Crusaders and the Well of Souls by Muslims. We also discuss the cryptic reference to the “Ariels of Moab,” although the ESV renders it “heroes of Moab” (1 Chr. 11:22). In the King James, ariel is translated “lion-like,” based on the Hebrew ari (“lion”). So, ariels are literally “lions of God,” although “lions of El” is more likely, given that they were from Moab, where Yahweh was not normally worshiped. What are those ariels? We don't know. There's an entry for ariel in the Dictionary of Deities and Demons in the Bible, and it doesn't give a conclusive answer. We can only guess, but based on the Septuagint, which was translated into Greek from an older Hebrew manuscript by about 200 BC, the best reading might be, “[Benaiah] struck the two sons of Ariel of Moab.” In other words, as disappointing as it may seem, it's likely there were no “lion-like men of Moab,” just two warriors from Moab whose father's name was Ariel. After a celebratory psalm, Psalm 133, we read the important Psalm 106. This is where we find one of only three mentions of demons in the Old Testament. It's a translation of the word shedim, a type of territorial spirit depicted in the ancient Near East as winged bulls—like the giant statues of protective spirits found outside the palace of the kings of Assyria now on display at museums around the world. We also dig into Psalm 106:28–29, a passage that explains why God sent a plague against the Israelites while they camped at Shittim. The worship of Baal-Peor (“lord of the opening to the underworld”) involved eating sacrifices offered to the dead. We've recently learned that scholars since the 1940s believe that it's possible Shittim was not the Jordan valley across from Jericho, but might have been the 80-acre site on the hill called Tall el-Hammam—ancient Sodom. In other words, the tabernacle may have been directly over the site of the destroyed temple in Sodom. TRAVEL WITH US TO TÜRKIYE!
