Professor Robert Jordan was among the few people still on the campus of St. George's University in November of 1983, in the days after the U.S. invasion of Grenada. One day a strange request came in: The U.S. military wanted to use his anatomy lab at the university for a forensic exam.Martine Powers visits what is left of the old lab and hears the professor's story about what he saw that day. What transpired in that examination 40 years ago has raised serious questions about the identity and condition of the remains recovered from the pit at Calivigny.Later in the episode, Martine puts some of those questions to the “Grenada 17,” the individuals held responsible for the murder of Maurice Bishop and the others killed with him. She asks: What did they do with the bodies? And could they be omitting information that could explain the mystery? You can find photos and documents from the investigation in our special episode guide here. Are you a med school aspirant or current student? Being a doctor is a very noble job but the path to get there is not easy - in this episode, I talk with Karishma Mistry, a third-year medical student at St. George's University who is currently doing her rotations in Brooklyn, New York. We talk about Karishma's journey into Med School, how being a transplant recipient and coming from a family of doctors inspired her to take this path. We also talk about the stigmas associated with going to Med School in the Caribbean and how these stereotypes are NOT true - the geographic location of the school does not make you any less of a doctor. In today's episode, we are joined by Dr. Arunima Agarwal. Dr. Agarwal and I will go through a rapid fire Q&A with regards to the COVID vaccine for children under five. I know that so many parents were looking forward to February coming along and hopefully having this vaccine approved for kids under five, myself included. Unfortunately, that did not get approved this month. So in this conversation, we are looking at why this vaccine hasn't been approved, when we can expect it to be, where to find research-backed information to guide your decision, and more. Originally from Toronto, Canada, New York based pediatrician, Dr. Arunima Agarwal has a passion for helping and taking care of kids and their families from diverse backgrounds. Her interest in academics and auto-immune diseases started early in her residency training, which prompted her to pursue fellowship to further her knowledge,– from working at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles to Grenada, where she was part of the American Medical Students Association who traveled to isolated islands to provide routine screening for vision, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. She immediately saw a need for vaccine, nutrition and chronic illness education, which led to her to participate in televised educational content for NBC and ABC LA regarding the flu vaccine and the importance of limiting unhealthy sugars. Now that she has relocated back to the east coast she hopes to continue educating and taking care of at-risk youth in the Bronx school system. Dr. Agarwal also educates patients regarding COVID testing and recommendations as part of Same Day Health, a telemedicine platform created to help patients during this global pandemic. She is a Board Certified Pediatrician with the American Board of Pediatrics and has an undergraduate degree in Biology with Honors at the University of Western Ontario. She studied at St. George's University in Grenada for medical school and completed her clinical rotations in Brooklyn, NY. In this episode we discuss: Why the COVID vaccine for children under five hasn't been approved The process of getting a vaccine tested and approved When this vaccine might be available for ages five and under What kinds of side effects are being seen in vaccinated children over five How long you should wait to vaccinated your child if they've recently had COVID Why you should vaccinate younger children, even if they aren't at a high risk of severe health issues Resources: The CDC website The American Academy of Pediatrics The World Health Organization Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Episode 41, COVID Vaccine + Kids: A Rapid Fire Q&A with Dr. Krupa Playforth Episode 34, Update on MIS-C and COVID in Children with Dr. Anita Patel Episode 5, Rapid Fire Q&A on COVID Vaccines with Infectious Disease Epidemiologist, Jessica Malaty Rivera Episode 3. Born to Nigerian Parents, Dr. Osunwa grew up in California where he served as a nurse for three years before deciding to start medical school. Here are some of the highlights of his journey, pre-residency. He: Attended a specialized program for career transitioning at St. George's University in Grenada. Always knew he wanted to be an anesthesiologist and so, shadowed such doctors even as a nurse. Served as the president of the student government. Earned the White Coat Award in his last semester in Grenada. Applied to 136 programs in Anesthesia. Participated in the first cohort of zoom interviews due to Covid. Scored seven interviews. Matched at his second preference of program. Here are some of the challenges of applying into anesthesiology: Facing the reality of limited anesthesiology spots. Scoring above average Step 1 and Step 2 scores. Proving that the student is a holistic human being with other skills and traits outside of medicine. Securing LOR's. Demonstrating strong interest in the field. Does Dr. Osunwa regret switching careers from nursing? He saw medical school as an investment in himself. There was a great deal of knowledge acquisition, where all his questions from nursing were answered He is now able to provide better care for patients. Dr. Deborah Makinde's story will definitely prove to you that any roadblock can be overcome, to land yourself the residency position of your dreams. Keep listening to find out more! Nigerian-born Dr. Makinde moved to the US as a teenager and attended medical school at St. George's University in Grenada. After her graduation in 2020, She decided to apply to 150 programs for the 2020/2021 match cycle where she scored 4 interviews, but unfortunately, she went unmatched. During the 2020/2021 application period, she highlighted the following roadblocks: She failed the CS exam, but ended up taking the OET exam thereafter. She could not get ECFMG certified until the following year. Dr. Makinde then decided to take a gap year and reapplied in for the 2022 match cycle, scoring her over 11 interviews and a place on a few waitlists. She has since matched and is now about to be a resident in internal medicine. When asked what she changed about her application the second time around, she highlighted the following steps she took: Applied through SOAP. Tried to achieve a preliminary position, but did not get through. Applied to 250 programs instead of her initial 150 though she does not believe that it made a huge difference. Developed an application packet that was better and that had a theme to it. Wrote personalized statements customized to the prospective programs. Wrote Step 3 and passed. Contacted the programs she didn't get into asking for feedback, which she applied during her second application. And so, Dr. Makinde hopes to inspire you, who may be coping with one failure or another to: Let yourself grieve. Never see yourself personally as a failure. Always visualize yourself at a hospital with the career of your dreams. Keep yourself together, though it may be hard. Get involved in the community through volunteering and outreaching. Remember that you are stronger than your problems and your challenges. Trust the process, as this is your waiting period. Bruce Bistrian and George Blackburn — Dr Pasquale's interest in nutrition was sealed. He had a nutrition fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania where he met Drs. Stanley Dudrick and Jonathon Rhoads. He says he knows more about medicine through nutrition because nutrition does not have an organ; it's nutrition and the heart, nutrition and the brain, etc. Dr. Pasquale shares his thoughts on how the field of nutrition has changed and how ASPEN helps him keep up with the changes. Physician Spotlight is a forum for outstanding Senior Leaders, Young Rising Stars, and International Colleagues in the field of nutrition to discuss important topics and ideas that impact patient care. In our world of today, many marginalized communities face systemic injustices when seeking medical care, which leads to disproportionate rates of chronic illness and even death. OBGYN resident Dr. Nina Snowden, after having felt the brunt of these disparities herself, has dedicated her life to making a difference no matter how small. Keep listening to find out more about this IMG's story of determination and resilience. As a US IMG, Dr. Snowden completed her undergraduate and master's degrees in the US and even served as a registered dietician. After having faced a tragedy, however, Dr. Snowden felt inspired to start medical school at a later age than most students. It is this resolve that guided her through her medical education as she moved step by step to fulfill her calling to be a physician. She attended the St. George's University in Grenada and was able to maintain good grades throughout her time there. When asked to share the highlights of her journey to the match, Dr. Snowden dropped the following gems of advice: Make good use of your resources - Dr. Snowden recommends the IMG Roadmap course as an excellent guide to help IMGs land the residency they've been dreaming of. Networking is key! Dr. Snowden took it upon herself to show initiative and reach out to as many people within her intended field. She joined organizations, attended conferences and introduced herself to program coordinators in order to improve her chances of matching. Ignore the naysayers - Though Dr. Snowden admits to not having had the most stellar scores on USMLE, she did not let the negative opinions of others prevent her from applying to the specialties that she was interested in. Ultimately, the only person who needs to believe in you, is you! Leverage your application if your scores are not within your desired bracket - Dr. Snowden ensured that she had a back up plan and so, attained letters of recommendation from each one of her core rotations in case she had to participate in the The Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP). She boosted all the other areas of her application so that her scores were just one component of many. Overall, despite a rough beginning, Dr. Snowden was determined not to become a statistic, and despite being an underdog, she was determined to achieve all of her goals. As such, she constantly reminded herself to: Strive to do better in all things. Once you do your best, everything else will fall in line. Feeling inspired? Is emergency medicine your passion but you are scared that as an IMG your chances of matching are significantly lower? In our ever-changing world, outstanding IMGs like Dr. Ololade Akinfemiwa keep breaking the barriers, challenging the status quo and living their dreams as physicians in the United States. Keep listening to find out more about this Emergency Medicine resident's inspiring journey! Nigerian-Canadian Dr. Akinfemiwa was never one to let life's challenges define her and this ambitious attitude drove her throughout medical school at the St. George's University in Grenada, despite this not having been her original plan. She worked hard during medical school and was able to perform exceptionally well until her graduation in 2021. With regard to her specialty, Dr. Akinfemiwa chose emergency medicine after a particular rotation which cemented her interest in the field. When asked about her journey to the match and the various difficulties she faced, Dr. Akinfemiwa highlighted the following: Throughout her education at St. George's university, she studied in the UK, Grenada and the US. The constant moving, while difficult, was made more bearable by having a strong support system to surround her. The unique experience of going through residency application and interviews completely online offered certain advantages in the realms of networking and communication, which are both essential during this process. Scores are not the end all, be all and they do not define you. Dr. Akinfemiwa ensured to build her application to be as holistic as possible through extra curricular activities and relevant clinical experience. Detailed research, diligence and dedication are important especially when attempting to specialize in Emergency Medicine, due to the characteristic requirements of this field such as the standardized letter of evaluation (SLOE). When preparing for virtual interviews, Dr. Akinfemiwa advises to practice with friends and family, record and critique yourself in order to identify areas needing improvement, and to ensure that you have a stable internet connection. Finally, Dr. Akinfemiwa leaves us with these inspirational tidbits: Always work as hard as possible. Once you've done the best that you can, there is no need to worry. Mindset plays a huge rule in a person's success. Everything that you are able to achieve begins with your thoughts. Persistence in the face of challenges builds resilience and success. After getting a 19 on the MCAT... twice, today's guest went through 2 rounds of rejections from US medical schools. In the one interview she did get from a US medical school, she was told there was no way she would pass STEP 1 with her low MCAT score. She was also told that and no school would accept her because she wouldn't match into residency. Despite the odds, in August 2016 she started school at St. George's University in the Caribbean. In July 2018, she obtained a 246 on the USMLE STEP 1 exam (take that suckers haha). In June 2020, she graduated from St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada. Her story isn't over ... In July 2020, she went on to start internal medicine residency at a university program in Philadelphia, PA. As an IMG you are going to hear so many unfounded opinions about the path you have taken. You cannot allow that to define you. You are the most common valuable determinant of your outcome! As Dr. Kaitlyn McSurdy said "let your failures fuel your fire".
