There are many different approaches to introducing solids to your baby. As a mama who has done this 5 times, I share the approach that has worked well for us. This is based upon experience and research. What is baby led weaning? It is when you offer your baby food from your family meals cut up into finger sized foods allowing them to self-feed. We discuss: -How to know your baby is ready for solids -How to introduce high-allergen foods -The difference between choking and gagging -Benefits of the BLW method Resources: Baby-Led Weaning: The Essential Guide by Gill Rapley, PhD, and Tracey Murkett Follow my journey by subscribing to this podcast. Dr Gill Rapley is the pioneer of “baby-led weaning”, a practice of allowing your baby to self-feed as you introduce family foods. The post Baby-Led Weaning appeared first on Pinky McKay Official Website.
If you've even been near a baby, let alone had one, you've probably heard of baby-led weaning, the idea that babies don't need to have puree laden spoons shovelled into their mouths, but are perfectly capable of feeding themselves. Even choosing their own foods from a pre-prepared selection. Gasp.In this episode I talk to Gill Rapley, whom I first met in 2006 but had heard about a bit before then. She didn't invent BLW but she definitely put it on the map and kicked off a lot of research into this subject. She also co-wrote the original, research packed book on the subject (accept no substitute!): Baby-Led Weaning. Gill was a health visitor for 20 years, is a board certified lactation consultant and is the co-author of five other books including one just published in the UK on an adapted baby led weaning approach for babies with additional challenges and difficulty eating called Your Baby Can Self Feed Too.We talk about what baby led weaning is, what it isn't, why we may want to rethink spoon feeding, what the research shows and why, anyway, baby's first piece of cutlery - when he or she is ready to wield their own - should really be a fork and not a spoon. I should add I did spoon/puree feeding with my first and baby led weaning with my second. I'll talk more about that at the end of the episode.Read more about Gill, her work and her books at: www.rapleyweaning.comIf you'd like to read the article I wrote in 2006 when I first met Gill you can do so here. Baby-led weaning has become super-trendy in recent years with a ton of websites, new books, and influencers all talking about it. And on Google, the term gets more than half a million searches every month. Despite its buzzworthy-ness, however, it's not a new idea by any means, dating back more than 20 years. What is new, however, is the concept of adapted baby-led weaning for babies who have developmental delays and feeding challenges. In this episode, I sat down with Gill Rapley, PhD. who is considered the pioneer of baby-led weaning, and Jill Rabin, MS, CCC-SLP/L, a pediatric speech pathologist and an international board certified lactation consultant who developed the adapted baby-led weaning approach. Together, they authored the new book, “Your Baby Can Self-Feed, Too.” Gill and Jill talk about how to recognize feeding challenges and where to get help. They also describe what adapted baby-led weaning is, how it works, and why it's so beneficial for kids with developmental delays and feeding challenges and their families. We also talk about tools that can help make feeding easier and how to get family members and caregivers on board with adapted baby-led weaning. Welcome 2:28 Let's talk about your stories! 6:06 What is baby-led weaning? 9:26 How has it evolved through the years? 12:53 What are the feeding challenges that babies can have? 14:20 How common are feeding challenges? 16:24 What are the signs your child may have feeding difficulties? 17:08 What happens if they aren't identified? 20:41 What is adapted baby-led weaning? 23:10 What does research show? 24:57 What are the core elements of it? 26:34 What are bridge devices? 27:48 Does adapted baby-led weaning require that caregivers get on board with it? 28:26 How do people get help with adapted baby-led weaning? 28:58 For parents who have started solids, how do they transition from purees to baby-led weaning? 31:52 How can grandparents and daycare providers get on board? #142: You should wait 3-5 days between introducing new foods. You should cut up food really small to reduce choking risk. Babies have to learn to chew before they swallow and baby-led weaning means no spoons and no purees. Myths about baby-led weaning are ENDLESS, and there's nobody better than Gill Rapley to help debunk these BLW myths! Gill Rapley is the co-author of the original baby-led weaning book and the founding philosopher of the baby-led weaning movement. In this episode Dr. Rapley is walking us through 5 “legacy myths” (those that have been around since the first edition of her BLW book) and newer “current myths” that have cropped up in recent years. If you've ever wondered, “I wonder what Gill Rapley would think about this?...” then this is the episode for you. #140: BLW Day...it's a thing! And Gill Rapley, the founding philosopher of the baby-led weaning movement is here to help celebrate! The first ever NATIONAL BABY-LED WEANING DAY is July 1, 2021. But why? Well, July 1 is right at the 6 month mark in the calendar year. If your baby was born January 1, on July 1 your baby would be 6 months of age. In this episode Gill Rapley is going to explain the other reliable signs of readiness to eat that your baby should be demonstrating, but with BLW day we're driving awareness to the importance of waiting until the 6 month mark to start solid foods. We're also chatting about the history of introducing solid foods and why historically doctors and health professionals have recommended starting before 6 months of age. And Gill and I discuss why we don't celebrate this important readiness to start solid foods milestone in Western food culture...but how BLW Day can help us start doing so! Happy Baby-Led Weaning Day and hope you enjoy this interview with Gill Rapley, co-author of the original BLW book and the lady who made it her mission to show us how many foods our babies can learn to eat if we just let them and wait until they're ready to self-feed! #100: Gill Rapley will be the first to tell you she didn't “invent” baby-led weaning. But if you've read Rapley's original baby-led weaning book, you'll agree that she did a lot more than, as she so modestly claims, “...just gave it a name and a theoretical base”. As the founder of the baby-led weaning philosophy, GIll Rapley opened our eyes to the reality that when it comes to feeding: babies can do so much more than we give them credit for. To celebrate the 100th episode of the BABY-LED WEANING MADE EASY podcast, I'm thrilled to bring you a two-part interview series with the lady who started it all: Gill Rapley, PhD. In this first episode we'll be looking at the history of baby-led weaning: did she set out to spawn a baby-feeding movement? How did Rapley come to co-author Baby-Led Weaning: The Essential Guide book with Tracey Murkett? And then how did she deal with doubters and skeptics when the baby-led weaning philosophy and practice really began to take off? I've sat in my fair share of infant feeding seminars and heated BLW moms groups where I've often wondered, “...What Gill Rapley would have to say about this?” Well, I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity in this interview to ask her all about the early days of baby-led weaning and to hear the answer straight from its biggest champion and founding philosopher! We found out that our son is allergic to peanuts during his 6th introduction to peanut butter puffs. This was the most terrifying experience I have ever been through to date. By the grace of God he is still here with us. On this episode I give you a play by play through our nightmare. I also touch on the fact that we started Baby Led Weaning at 6 months old. If you are interested in Baby-Led weaning I highly recommend reading Eat the Eight Book by Ron Sunog MD and Baby-led Weaning by Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett. These two books were full of information about feeding your baby. I would also recommend checking out Katie Ferraro, MPH, RDN, CDE on instagram.

@mam_podcast * v podcastu zmiňuji knihy Baby-led weaning od Gill Rapley a Tracey Murkett a Breifrei od autorek Loretta Stern a Anja C. Meredith and Kaytee are back with SO many books my fingers are cramped (this is becoming a theme…). You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: family presentation at homeschool group and going into a new book completely blind. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’ve got five current reads this week, and they are sci-fi/fantasy heavy, which is WEIRD for us! Lots of strong opinions here! We’ve got an update for you on our Slow But Steady reads and what’s been happening in the past week. Also a short grammar lesson on “Swifties”. For our deep dive this week, we had a number of listeners (and real life friends) request our favorite parenting books. This will span everything from pregnancy/birth to infanthood to growing children to adding siblings. Plus one funny pick for when you just want to laugh it off. Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands. We’ve got books “with caveats” this week. So, stay tuned and listen closely to see if they are actually right for you! As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. Dr Gill Rapley is on the show to talk about Baby-Led Weaning – a great alternative way of weaning with a whole host of benefits. Gill, who coined the term Baby-Led Weaning, has worked as a health visitor and midwife. She was taught to question accepted wisdom. She discovered that a lot of mothers were struggling to introduce their babies to solid foods. After raising 3 of her own children and trying baby-led weaning out on them, she realised that Baby-Led Weaning is a great way to wean babies. Without the stress of spoon-feeding. Gill has since completed a masters degree and also is the author of a number of books on the subject. I’m discussing the ins and outs of baby led weaning, why waiting until 6 months is important and also signs your baby is ready for weaning. Also on the show, mother of three Kiana Carrington-Roberts, who is currently doing Baby-Led Weaning with her 9 month old son but traditionally weaned her older two. I'll be asking Kiana how it compares to spoon-feeding.
