We will delve into the specific ways in which prolonged thumb sucking, binky use, and bottle use can affect facial growth and development. We will explore the potential consequences for the alignment of teeth, the shape of the palate, and even the development of the airway. Understanding these effects will help us recognize the importance of intervening and guiding children towards healthier habits. So, if you're a parent, caregiver, or simply interested in the fascinating world of oral health, stay tuned as we unravel the impact of non-nutritive sucking habits on healthy facial growth and development. As a Mom and a Myofunctional Therapist I like to transition to a Myo Munchee. This will encourage proper tongue function and is a great transition to big kid status! For more information: https://myomunchee.com/for-parents/ You can schedule a call with us to help guide you https://shereewertz.com/15-min Key Takeaways: Sucking habits, such as thumb sucking and pacifier use, are initially developed as a reflex and provide a sense of security and comfort for babies and children. It can begin in the womb and may continue into adulthood as a response to stress or anxiety. Prolonged sucking habits can have negative consequences, including deformities of the thumb, fingers, nails, teeth, and facial structures. It can also impact swallowing patterns, leading to chronic tongue thrusting and mouth breathing. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends reducing pacifier use and thumb sucking by 18 months of age to minimize potential issues. If sucking habits persist, they can interfere with normal tooth eruption and jaw growth, leading to problems like an "open bite" where the upper and lower teeth don't overlap. Correction becomes necessary to prevent tongue thrusting and malocclusion. Managing sucking habits requires a team approach, including parental guidance, dental appliances, and behavior modification techniques like positive reinforcement and counseling. Sucking habits, such as thumb sucking, are associated with self-comfort and security. Most children naturally discontinue these habits around the age of 4 as they develop better self-regulation skills. Breathing techniques, such as inhaling deeply through the nose and exhaling slowly, can help children manage anxiety and transition away from sucking habits. The duration and resting pressure of the sucking habit are more critical than the magnitude of force applied. Sucking habits can lead to dental and skeletal malformations, affecting facial shape and the function of the tongue and facial muscles. When weaning a child off the pacifier, gradually reduce its usage during non-stressful times, restrict its use outside of the crib, and avoid major life changes or stressful periods during the weaning process.

In our 179th episode of Beyond the Bump, we chat to Jess. Jess is a speech pathologist and we chat to her all about thumb sucking and dummy use. This can be a pretty heated topic where parents have so many questions like, ‘what damage am I causing?' versus ‘I need to use this to survive!' Dummy versus thumb sucking. Is one better than the other? Is there anything we can do to encourage thumb sucking? Or are some kids just into it and others aren't? Conversely, should we discourage thumb sucking and use a dummy instead? What are the main concerns with thumb/finger sucking? How would we go about weaning thumb/finger sucking? And how do we do it at night? Everyone seems to be getting braces when they're older nowadays, so why does it matter if our bubs move their teeth around with their thumbs? What can we do if their thumbs keep getting blistered and sore? Dummies — do they deserve the bad rap that they get? What are the pros and cons of dummies? When should we introduce the dummy? Do dummies reduce the risk of SIDS? If our bubs are less than one year old, what is the best way to wean a dummy? How often are we supposed to be replacing and/or sterilising dummies? And SO MUCH MORE!!! Beyond the Bump is a podcast brought to you by Jayde Couldwell and Sophie Pearce! A podcast targeted at mums, just like you! Kids' movies are a lot of fun, aren't they? Bright colors, engaging characters and wacky hijinks aplenty have always been a great way to keep youngsters entertained. HOWEVER. Those of us of a certain generation have distinct memories of certain "children's" movies that raise the question, "What the hell were they THINKING?!?" Sure, that animated film about bunnies or puppies may have LOOKED innocent on the surface. But when our parents plunked us down in front of them and left the room, we were nevertheless often subjected to themes and imagery that haunt us to this day. Depending on the movie, we had to deal with everything from cute horses dying of depression, to kidnappings by candy-waving maniacs, to straight-up body horror that wouldn't have been out of place in a Cronenberg or Carpenter production. So join Saint and Jim for this lively jaunt back in time for a look at some of the more traumatizing, nightmare-fuel kids' entertainment that your youthful self was in NO way prepared for.

Toddlers suck their thumb when bored, falling asleep, upset, and watching tv. It creates a yummy feeling, like a day at the spa. Over time, kids develop other calming skills and typically give the habit up. But what if they don't? Most kids will stop sucking their thumbs around 2-4 years of age, or by the time the permanent teeth are ready to erupt. That is, as long as we don't pester our kids about thumb-sucking. When we pressure our kids to stop, we may inadvertently cause more thumbsucking. So, today let's talk about how you can help your toddler break the habit.INSTAGRAMFollow Dr Cathryn on Instagram: @healthiest_babyTODDLERS MADE EASY courseCheck out our course: Toddlers Made Easy CourseBECOME THE PARENT EVERY KID WANTSSign up for our FREE parenting strategies: Get Toddler Smart You'll get clear and solid parenting insights that will CALM your nerves, SAVE you frustration, and UP your confidence. Some people find it adorable when a baby sucks his or her thumb. Although that is a normal occurrence, the continuation of the habit into the toddler and elementary school years of a child could negatively affect their oral and facial development.Thumb sucking can cause some children to create what is commonly known as a dental openbite (a vertical space between the upper and lower teeth where the teeth do not touch). This open bite is a dental issue most difficult to correct.Other children will suck their thumb to the point that it appears that their top teeth are “sticking out”. This would require orthodontic treatment to correct. But the biggest issue that thumb sucking causes is changes to the bottom jaw that can affect the normal growth of the jaw which negatively affects the child's face. This is caused by the thumb or finger preventing the lower jaw from coming forward and growing properly during thumb sucking. The negative effects to the teeth and jaw depends on the frequency, intensity and duration of the child's sucking habit. Frequency is the number of times the child is sucking during the day. Intensity is the amount of force that is applied to the teeth and jaw during sucking. Duration is the total amount of time spent sucking. The more frequent, the more intense and the longer the duration of the sucking habit, the more likely it is to affect the child's developing oral structure and jaw.Dr. Liliana Calkins is a Specialist in Orthodontics and Craniofacial Orthopedics at Sunrise Orthodontics Facial & Airway Development Center. As an esteemed member of the International Academy of Orofacial Myology and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine she is trained to address pediatric facial development issues resulting from thumb sucking. Is all punishment necessarily bad? Nope! There are two kinds of punishment, and one of them is actually frequently used by so called "positive reinforcement" like Annie: Negative Punishment. Here Annie breaks down what Negative Punishment is, talks about how it interplays with positive reinforcement, and explains its role in the "Elevator Game," which is a great exercise you can to do at mealtimes in order to teach a dog to not bum-rush the food bowl. She also reads from Behavior Principles In Every Day Life by John D. Baldwin and Janice I. Baldwin, which talks about a study in which parents used negative punishment at story time in order to discourage children from sucking their thumbs. Behavior Principles In Every Day Life by John D. Kids have different ways to cope with stressful situations. Some resort to more vocal ways-- while others tend to go inward as a way to cope with what’s hard in life. It’s hard for us to know exactly how to approach them with love and kindness while still helping them move through tough behavior.Joining me this episode is a follower and active participant on the Facebook group, Jillian. Jillian, like so many of us, struggles with a behavior that she can’t quite figure out how to navigate. We take a look at the whole child, the underlying and the more obvious and try to find ways to meet her daughter where she is using connection. I know others struggle with thumb sucking and pacifiers and hope this episode is helpful. Watching babies and children grow and develop is delightful, but there can be some hurdles along the way. A toddler can decide that day naps are no longer 'their thing'. A baby who was sleeping through the night can start waking every hour. It's at times like these that most of us could do with a little help, which is where Mothercraft nurse Chris Minogue comes in. Chris has been helping parents for over thirty years, and there aren't many situations she hasn't had to deal with. On this episode of Helpline that includes: An 18-month-old refusing their day nap, helping a six-month-old sleep without being fed to sleep, how to move a two-and-a-half-year-old to a big bed, whether it's okay to keep a three-year-old in a cot, a thumb-sucking four-year-old, a two-year-old who refuses to wear their glasses or brush their teeth, an eight-week-old who wants to be constantly held, a two-year-old fussy eater and a 16-month old who keeps hitting his mum in the face.
In Episode 5 Zohara Nguyen and I talked about thumb sucking and oral habits. We learned what oral habits are, how to identify them, and the IMPACT oral habits can have on development and function. In this episode, we chat to Zohara about how to manage and treat oral habits, how to fix them, and how parents can prevent them before they even start happening! We discuss the guilt that parents might feel when their child has an oral habit or suck their thumb, and give advice to parents in this situation. This episode comes with a FREE downloadable PDF all about oral habits and thumb sucking. Go to www.spot.family/podcasts to get your copy! "Thumb sucking” might have a big name, but the more technical term for sticking your fingers in your mouth? Is “oral habit”. Thumbs aren't the only things that get put into your mouth, or your kids mouth, on a regular basis. At this crucial time that we're developing this podcast, Corona virus is rapidly spreading around the world. It's a really appropriate time to be looking at oral habits, and not only how they can impact on facial growth and development, but basic hygiene as well. Having your fingers in your mouth spreads germs, and we should try to avoid it in ourselves, and in our children, as much as possible. Orofacial Myology is a field of study, or type of research that looks closely at the causes of oral habits, why they occur, and the impact that oral habits can have on the face, the mouth, and function. Orofacial Myology is integral in the diagnosis, and treatment of oral habits, and part one of this series will deep dive into all of these things.

Recently I spent time doing some voluntary work with young children and I noticed a toodler having difficulty with speaking and being understood which was causing him quite alot of frustration. After asking his teacher why he was struggling so much with his speech she mentioned that he had top teeth that were protruding and said this was quite commonly observed in children who at an older age were still sucking their thumb and using pacificers. This then got me thinking and speaking with friends, family and educators of young children about the topic of thumb-sucking and the use of pacificers. I noted a real mix of opinion of people who thought it was completely harmless to give a child a pacifier and what people thought of the habit of thumb-sucking. So in researching this health topic what was surprising to me is that babies can often be seen on ultrasound sucking their thumb in utero. And if fact the sucking reflex is one of the most important reflexes a newborn baby develops as it enables their ability to eat. However, how long should a child be thumb sucking for and how long should they be given pacifiers as a way to self-soothe is the question? And should we be worried if these habits go on for too long and could they cause major orthodontic work as they get older? So, I thought I would speak to an Orthodontist who treats and manages children's teeth Dr Sanjana from Class 1 Orthodontics and ask her some questions about baby and child teeth development as well as, find out the truth about thumb-sucking and the use of pacficiers and how they affect children's teeth. A big thankyou to Dr Sanjana for giving of her time and knowledge. Dr Sanjana Baksi completed her Bachelor of Dental Science (Hons) at UWA and subsequently worked as a dentist in Perth in private and in indigenous oral health. Shen then undertook and completed her orthodontic specialist training at The University of Adelaide. Dr Baksi is a member of the Australian Dental Association, Australian Society of Orthodontists and American Association of Orthodontists. For more information on Dr Sanjana and Class 1 Orthodontics visit www.class1ortho.com.au If you know someone who may benefit from listening to this podcast episode please share with your friends and family. Also if you could take a quick minute to write a review of this episode would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for listening and supporting MediTalkPodcast! This is not Celebratory Apprentice, a business roundtable or a think tank thumb sucking seminar. This is the future of our civilization at stake. We need leadership in the White House, in Congress, and in the conservative movement (which is nonexistent) to speak with one voice and to speak to the morality, values, and ethos of our just cause the way the left speaks to the morality of their immorality. In honor of George Washington’s upcoming birthday, this episode of the Conservative Conscience is dedicated to drawing upon his legacy to inspire a new generation of conservative leaders who will rise to the occasion and confront the civilization-destroying challenges of this generation. It is quite evident from conservative leaders and Republican officials that their hearts are not sensitive enough to the severity of the threats against our sovereignty, security, civil society, and system of governance. Daniel lays out a blueprint for a path forward and commits to charting a new course. Key quotes: “His was the directing spirit without which there would have been no independence, no Union, no Constitution, and no Republic. His ways were the ways of truth. He built for eternity. His influence grows. His stature increases with the increasing years. In wisdom of action, in purity of character, he stands alone. We can not yet estimate him. We can only indicate our reverence for him and thank the Divine Providence which sent him to serve and inspire his fellow men.” ~President Calvin Coolidge, remarks celebrating Washington’s birthday in 1927 “All see, and most admire, the glare which hovers round the external trappings of elevated office. To me there is nothing in it, beyond the lustre which may be reflected from its connection with a power of promoting human felicity.” ~George Washington, letter to Catherine Macaulay Graham, January 9, 1790 Show links: Enough lukewarm hell: 8 steps Trump must take NOW to effect real change The lower courts are lost forever.
